Yep that's why when a new game is announced as an open world I'm a bit disappointed, thinking in my head "Great! Another game with 3 awesome main quests and 192 repetitive side quests". The best example for me has been Saints Row - Gat out of hell.

I think it’s just that people only care about length:price ratio. I don’t think it’s a few journalists upset with a lack of accessibility like difficulty. More that people want to get the most of the their buck.
And for better or worse, the bare minimum for most gamers is “Playing something that is better than doing anything else”
Basically to pass the time. I play strategy games that are painfully dull and uninteresting but at the same time i like to think that it’s better than doing nothing or etc.
I really think if you want to make shorter, tighter games, you have to lower the prices or do some subscription service. You could also pair the game with a multiplayer component to justify the $60 price tag.
But yeah, sadly until you make shorter games cheaper, I don’t think we’ll see more games being well paced and tight.

    Omori spoilers:
in Omori, Humphrey is supposed to feel like padding. Omori is trying to keep Sunny away from the truth but is getting desperate because of how much time he spends outside in the real world, he's actively fighting Sunnys need to know what's going on. Reexamine humphrys dialogue here 6:10 under the context that Omori is talking to Sunny instead of Humprey talking to Omori. This also makes sense for the other dungeons because if your only source of entertainment is your imagination, it's going to get boring at times; especially when you have depression.
