Man that hits hard. Playing a single game for about month or two makes my free time as blurry as my working hours. I think I'll try switching to shorter stuff too
Finally, someone had to say it. The only time people had the patience to play through 100 hour games was years ago when the content was actually enjoyable and engaging, nowadays the gaming industry has been conditioned into pumping out 100 hour games which feature nothing mind numbing filler which no normal person would have the patience to sit through. It getting completely ridiculous.
Very much agree. Most AAA games get dead boring by hour 15 to 20 and I have about 80 more hours of this? No thank you. Plus that means around 6+ hours of cut scenes/text. When is the last time you watched a 6+ hour movie??? I remember when we got Tetris for our Nintendo back in 1990. Simple, fast, no real story and we played it for years...where has this sense of innovation gone?
Love the Yakuza games, they absolutely pull it off , although there are a few spots which makes you sink a lot of time to complete like the real estate missions or the hostess club management. Still, the game's side quests are well presented and quite often hilarious too. And lastly there are some moments that choke you up, like the ending to Yakuza 6 and Like a Dragon.
Red Dead Redemption 2 doesn't have annoying side content shit though. You can play through the story and just through the story, no bullshit filler. It will still take a long time but I found it deeply enjoyable. All the side quests are also tailor made and good. There's no bullshit to collect, every side missions has good scripting and story moments to it.
Good stuff! I will say, I mostly agree but I consider RDR2 one of the much more well-done examples of the “really long open world game” category and I don’t find myself feeling as empty as I may in many other games of a similar nature
Yeah RDR2 is a slower paced in general, but isn't filled with boring collectathons or grindy repetitive missions that just feel like busy work (except for some of the challenges but you can ignore them), I found the open world itself very relaxing and if you just follow the main storyline missions, yeah it's still a long game but with a good mix of mission types to hold your interest as well as the amazing story filled laughs and tears. Personally I think any Ubisoft game would have been a better example
I remember being super upset whenever I’d get a game around 4-5 hours in length, But I also now realized I just as much hate getting a game that has about thousands of hours of repetitive boring content, The beautiful medium to me is 8-12 hours of story content, plus about 15 hours or so of optional content, Plus a game with some replay ability
Definitely gonna check out Urumangi Generation, I like games that have a message that the author wants to get across. For me it makes them feel more personal, as well as telling me as the player that they really did care about the product they were putting out.
I was taken aback by the random Tino Rangatiratanga included then found out the developer is from my country and the games set in a city not too far of a drive from mine!
As of late I’ve been really enjoying short games. Hylics 1 got in and said what it wanted to say and Deltarune Chapter 2 is the same. At a time when my backlog is bigger than ever it’s great to be able to check off a game in only a few days.
I personally want longer story games for example God of War (2018) is an excellent game that tells a story that I love to follow and I love to explore the beautiful world as well so if I take my time the game is nearly 30 hours of pure story gameplay alone which is truly amazing in my opinion, Good video tho!
When I bought RDR2 I downloaded it, booted it up and quit right after the opening cinematic. I was not ready for such a long game. I waited for months, but when summer came and my calender was empty I started it. Played it for an entire month and it was amazing. Genuinly top 3 best games I have ever played. But I needed to be in the right mindset for it, which is super difficult for large games. Thats why I approciate all the shorter games out there
thank god this is becoming more common thought, i actually just beat rdr2 (its actually very easy to just blast through the story and i would recommend it) but god i miss the days where i would buy a game, and beat the whole campaign in one night, i guess it gives less value but it was fun! plus usually the multiplayer was actually playable unlike nowadays. I still enjoy large games, especially if they value your time and reward your time like say mass effect.

Babe wake up, new Ovandal video. Seriously tho, great video. This is honestly a huge problem I never really noticed plaguing the industry, namely triple A stuff. Like my friend was talking about how he'd sit down for a casual playthrough of Red Dead 2 and I cannot imagine sitting down to replay an entire 40 hour long game (don't even get me started on the shit show that is 100%ing it)... I'll stick to playing thru Super Castlevania over and over or anything else short and sweet.

Hope you are doing well and that you can keep up with the good work! Also Sayonara Wildhearts, Inside, Superhot and Jotun are some other amazing under five hours games
Value for money, or, more accurately, playtime per dollar spent, really don't matter anymore. There are hundreds of great games on Steam that cost less than $5 or are even free which can keep your average player with a 9-5 busy for weeks or even months. My Steam library could probably keep me entertained from now until I die without me needing to spend another dime. It's the same as happened to books. There are more books worth reading than a single person could ever read in their entire life. But I feel it's not that books or games are too long, it's that there's 7 billion humans with their own thoughts and creativity and we can never hope to even come close to absorbing even a fraction of that. This is especially difficult for my generation. I grew up at a time (the 80s) when it was actually possible to have played almost every game. Shifting from that to being ignorant of a majority of games was a tough pill to swallow and for a while, it led me down a path of trying to keep up to date with everything. Took me a while to realize that, as a result of trying to do that, I wasn't actually playing any games.
Great video! I always hate it when people treat game length with such importance so this was nice. Also this felt a bit weird to watch since pikuniku has been rotting in my backlog for a while.

Backloggd is a brilliant website, it's got so many neat features and the ratings there are so much better than metacritic or other sites, since they're more grounded and people rarely just give out 5 or 1 stars
As of late, I wasn't very invested in videos from specific youtubers You've kinda changed that routine in me. Never have I before had genuine pleasure in tagging along with what someone had to say about pixels on a screen you could control with button presses. Thanks man.
Didn't expect a game recommendation, but you really sold me on Pikuniku, especially with the music and the comparison to the funny side stuff in Undertale since those were my favorite parts of the game
With time i've come to appreciate shorter but more cohesive experiences in gaming and entertainment. This message resonates a lot with the previous vid "Let things end".
I feel that like books and movies video games can be any length and have value. If someone won't play pikuniku because it's short they are doing themselves a disservice and should play pikuniku but even though I play short games and love them like pikuniku and wandersong I still prefer long games. Yakuza 0 ( and most of the series) is about 20-30 hours long for just the main story but my time is usually 80 hours due to the fact that everything side mission and mini game felt worth doing. I played every persona game and the story and combat kept me playing thru the long length. If the game is good and engaging people can play for however long the developer can keep it going. Fallout 4 wasn't fun because the design wasn't made to be good for long just to be long. The settlement feature was just an endless mission mode that never felt like you were not achieving anything If that stopped at only 30 minutes that would still be 30 minutes wasted. Bad features and gameplay stay bad not matter how short or long it is but if they made the settlement feature amazing the I wouldn't care how long it is. Love the video and keep saying what you feel.
Yo I’ve binge watched this channel after that hotline Miami vid. Also rdr2 is one of the few games where it’s length doesn’t fill like filler and actually tells stories that add to the larger picture and are interesting. Only quests I hated were optional find x of object that were completely optional
I'd rather play a 5 hour game that's good all the way through than a 40 hour one with fluff and filler. The more hours the game takes the less likely I am to play and beat it
jesus, i have never seen a youtuber more in touch with my taste in games as well as love and passion for them that exactly matches mine. you are very dreamy have my babies.
i don't dislike all long games, i just don't have the time for so many of them nowadays so i have to play them further between each other if i didn't play the persona games as a teenager i don't think i would start one now tbh
interesting point with botw. another game that does this whole 'malleable playtime' thing well is The Outer Wilds. that game can take anywhere between 6 minutes and 30 hours to beat and is one of the most rewarding games I've ever played. if you haven't played it yet, I'd seriously recommend it and that you go in as blind as possible :)
hey man. I came from the hotline Miami video and I just wanted to say thank you!!! I really loved this one too. U r an awesome reviewer. enjoye your videos a lot
Really liked the discussion. Would like to point out that, while it does depend from person to person, the less fluff a game has, usually the better designed, and consequently better, it is. Though there is a decent section that usually warrants a lot of playtime, namely "postgame games" like Diablo 2 and 3, games in which the fluff is the whole point, like Pokémon (there are around 1000 of these buggers) or even lifestyle games, those being MMOs, fighting games, etc. These can be played a single time or maybe even take years of playtime, if you want to do everything that they offer. Regarding single-player content though, I also really prefer games around the 7-10h mark, with the exception being Pokémon, maybe? The social aspect is part of the reason that I like spending so much time on them, but usually I'm trying out different combinations, catching a shitload of the lil' bastards, collecting things, customizing stuff, etc. Either way, there are good arguments for games being lengthier, but your time with them relies on how much you like them. ...which seems really dumb to say, but if the game is unable to reel you in, then you won't _want_ to stay for the long haul. Still think that I'd love Hollow Knight a lot more if it didn't take 6/7 hours to make me interested.
do keep playing rdr2 !!! just keep doing story stuff and immersing yourself, enjoy understanding the characters and you'll leave that game feeling truly moved and touched.
Ive been really enjoying ur videos and i'm super excited to hear ur opinions on more content. I really like how ur charecter interacts with the narration and story of the video, it makes a super engaging watchimg experiance So yeah i hope you keep on making videos!!
i was standing around my friend a few days ago, he was playing Rainbow6 Siege(he's been playing R6 for years). after a while i asked him why have you been playing this game for so long why are you always sticking on a single game for such a duration. (he has also been playing RDR2) in reply he answered that "i likes to focus on a game in a way to spend a good amount of my time on it, like a career that you choose yourself. other types of gamers like you will eventually get bored and want to try something new, i can't blame you. but the way i and some other people like me want to play games is like this. and you can't really blame us either because everyone has different tastes and opinions." no one has ever answered me better than this.
Great video! And piku niku is indeed the Greatest thing. I also highly recommend Momodora: reverie under the moonlight, for people that like the idea of soulsborne but prefer cute pixel art and also anime
When red dead 2 was released there was an article written about how the game “did not respect your time.” It was 100% right. I tried to find it but could not find it
This was pretty good! I was excited to see what video you would make next; I found your channel through the Hotline Miami video and watched some of your older ones, thoroughly enjoying them.
I was just thinking about how the HM2 video was the one that got me into your channel, and then at the end I realized that it had way more views than your other videos. But honestly, after watching a handful of your videos, they're all really good and well written. It's surprising your channel isn't bigger. Keep up the good work man, I'm loving your stuff so far
Bruh what you're saying is basically that games are supposed to be fun and that they shouldn't be filled with, well, filler. That doesn't have anything to do with length.
1. Assault is a fun ass starfox game 2. The Sin & Punishment games are pretty good games similar to starfox and lib maiden. Good video you are very cool and good
Persona 4 does a great job at feeling short since when the in-game time is limited and there's so much you want to do it feels like the 40 hours it takes to beat it is never enough. If it wasn't based around a calendar I think it would feel like it's being dragged out a bit but the way it's presented you keep thinking "oh god, the week can't be over already, I was so close to maxing out with Kanji and the school trip's tomorrooow!"
im actually spending 100 hours and more completing Metal Gear Solid V, but if i just completed the history it would have been less than 10 hours. Fkng kill me please im fulton extracting everything i see now
RDR2 lets the optional content be optional as much as humanly possible tho. That's why I always read muh slow hunting, muh slow drawer searching and muh camp managemant takes with a lot of confusion.
Yeah unless you're going for 100% RDR2 doesn't have loads of grind and filler maybe he should play it before lumping it in with Ubisoft open world games
That's why I mostly play indie/Nintendo games. They tend to be shorter. I still occasionally play AAA games that are long but they have to be straight up masterpieces. Like the Witcher 3/Zelda/RD2 etc.
See people condemning the idea of long games, but I don't really think that that is where you are going with this video. I think the problem is with games that put length on the back of the box like it is a feature and not just an expected aspect of some games. Most 4X games will eat up hundreds if not thousands of hours of your time, but that is totally expected for the genre so developers don't write summaries about how long the games are, like they do for open world and RPG games now.
I didn't even know Umurangi Generation was a thing but then I found out it was made by a New Zealand developer from a city just a bit south of mine. So thanks for that Ovandal, always nice to be exposed to new games from my neck of the woods! (There was a frame where the Tino Rangatiratanga Flag showed up and so that's what tipped me off that something must be up)
When you said that Pikuniku was better than Skyrim and that I was not allowed to disagree until I play it I felt so damn called out, I was like "you bastard, I know you're right but I'm still upset" great video mate! I'm also one of those people that came here for your Hotline Miami 2 video, courtesy of Jacob Geller, but I quite enjoy your stuff, so I'll be sticking around for sure ^^
Having played it recently i believe that gta 4 shows this game length phenomenon very well The main game with Niko Belic as the protagonist has more than 90 MAIN missions without checkpoints which adds to the occassional road block missions that will need a few tries to get done. The two dlcs being ballad of gay tony and lost and the damned have a quarter of these levels being 26 and 22 respectively. Not only does the dlc fix a lot of jank and cahnge the overall atmosphere (the main story still slaps) but they feel a lot more short and sweet and dont make you get that burnout from the dark depressing tone that the main game does. The dlcs also give another perspective amd help to expand the story without being more of the same dark and gritty story
(As a precursor to my comment, I do think we definitely need more variety in game length. Having a good mix of shorter and longer games with a variety of graphical styles is a must. I like longer games with good stories personally, but I also enjoy a good quick game from time to time as well.) I 100% recommend continuing RDR2. The story itself is worth the play time. You don’t have to do any side quests, and the vast majority of the main quests are entertaining and have importance to the overall story. There are even plenty of side quests that introduce interesting and entertaining characters. RDR2 (especially when playing with high honor) has an amazingly impactful and emotion-filled story. Seeing the character development/deterioration of the gang deepens the emotional connection to the story and characters even more. Honestly, I think it’s one of the best stories ever told in a single game. Other game series have an amazing stories told over many games, but RDR2 has an outstanding story encapsulated in the game. Of course it is a prequel to the first game, and the stories of both games connect to make an even more expansive and emotional story, but you could just take the story of RDR2 on its own and it’s still absolutely outstanding. When executed well, long games can be amazing and fulfilling. RDR2 had so many memorable moments, and that’s in part due to allowing the game to be long. You really get to know the characters gain a sort of attachment to them. It’s no secret by now that long games (if they’re executed well) are my bread and butter. The stories told through longer games have the potential to be more complex and deep, which is what I look for in a game. I just wish longer games didn’t put so much strain on the people who work to make them. If deadlines were looser and companies promoted a healthy balance of work and life in the industry, I think games (both long and short) would skyrocket in quality. Granted they’d take longer to make, but the quality would be something the workers would be a lot more proud of. Workers that aren’t stressed and are well rested tend to make higher quality products. Less stress also helps to keep the passion for making games burning. (TL:DR: RDR2 good)
It's a little bit longer than 5 hours, if you're as bad at it as I am, but I highly recommend Cruelty Squad. It's short enough and tapped into the current zeitgeist unlike anything else.
2:16 WHERE TELL ME! PLEASE! I have looked everywhere online for the older physical copies of the persona games and they're all at least £100 in the uk. Ya have to help me please, i'm desperate
Reasons that a game being long is unequal to it being good Reason 1:sayonara wild hearts If I have to explain myself any more than I already have, something has gone horribly wrong in your life
This would be true if there wasn't a massive selection of quick games. We are far from the days where you had to wait until Christmas until a game came out where there were slim pickings. The library of games is what's too long and specifically your point of Red Dead is the main story is great and I can't really see which part that they could cut and still have a fully enriched story line. Maybe those games just aren't for you like people who don't like long books but it's not an issue when you have millions of games. This is like complaining about the long line you're in when there's a short one right next to you. Also you don't have to do all of the open world* (maybe you can't handle that) but other people are able to ignore it.
Jacob Geller giving you a massive shout-out for your Hotline Miami 2 vid and also you being cute AF means that you earned a new subscriber. Congratulations. boogie-woogie-woogie.
That's why I'm mostly playing 7th gen games nowadays. They're usually below 15 hours long, without uncessary bloat, plus they don't take 40-100GB to install. I also beat New Super Lucky's Tale recently and it was *SO MUCH FUN!*. I wish there were more modern 3D platform games, although it's nice to see they're making a comeback recently. I agree with BOTW being a superb open world game. The world in that game is actually enticing to explore, plus the freedom you have to do so.
great video, unfortanely it's only 10 minutes, meaning it's worth nothing, do better next time, thank you

Only 15-20 hours? Most current aaa games I've played were boring at around 3-4 hours. I slogged through them because I spent full price on them.
I think it was a response to people complaining about Call of Duty being too short
If I had to recommend “long” open world games I would go with Yakuza 0(and the rest of the series), and Sunset Overdrive

Didn't expect a game recommendation, but you really sold me on Pikuniku, especially with the music and the comparison to the funny side stuff in Undertale since those were my favorite parts of the game
With time i've come to appreciate shorter but more cohesive experiences in gaming and entertainment. This message resonates a lot with the previous vid "Let things end".
fallout 4 slander? thats it, im subbing
Games arent too long. Quality games just arent too common
The more hours the game takes the less likely I am to play and beat it
found you through your incredible HM2 video
your content is brilliant keep it up!!
ps you deserve more subs >:)
Another incredible video! Thanks Ovandal, my GF just finished pikniku and I absolutely loved watching her have a blast playing it.
jesus, i have never seen a youtuber more in touch with my taste in games as well as love and passion for them that exactly matches mine. you are very dreamy have my babies.
"Games are too long"
>Likes Persona
Some mixed messages there
i don't dislike all long games, i just don't have the time for so many of them nowadays so i have to play them further between each other
if i didn't play the persona games as a teenager i don't think i would start one now tbh
interesting point with botw. another game that does this whole 'malleable playtime' thing well is The Outer Wilds. that game can take anywhere between 6 minutes and 30 hours to beat and is one of the most rewarding games I've ever played. if you haven't played it yet, I'd seriously recommend it and that you go in as blind as possible :)
I second this! Outer Wilds is such a comtemporary gem, and im so happy i could play it completely blind. Also a DLC just launched.
You've just earned your place as one of the five TH-camrs for whom I've turned on notifications.
Now, I'm off to buy Pikuniku.
The cost to time ratio of this video is infinite so therefore it's the best content possible
hey man. I came from the hotline Miami video and I just wanted to say thank you!!! I really loved this one too. U r an awesome reviewer. enjoye your videos a lot
keep it up!!
Thank you for sticking around! I hope you enjoy whatever it is i make in the future
I really like how ur charecter interacts with the narration and story of the video, it makes a super engaging watchimg experiance
So yeah i hope you keep on making videos!!
this was an amazing video!! i cant wait for more
Should be sooner rather than later! The only reason this one took so long was I had tonsillitis for two weeks lol
Found your channel through the HOTLINE MIAMI video! Great content! Subscribed!
imagine playing games that are intended to be long instead of replaying the same ones over and over losing your time voluntarily and fully aware
i was standing around my friend a few days ago, he was playing Rainbow6 Siege(he's been playing R6 for years).
after a while i asked him why have you been playing this game for so long
why are you always sticking on a single game for such a duration. (he has also been playing RDR2)
in reply he answered that "i likes to focus on a game in a way to spend a good amount of my time on it, like a career that you choose yourself. other types of gamers like you will eventually get bored and want to try something new, i can't blame you. but the way i and some other people like me want to play games is like this. and you can't really blame us either because everyone has different tastes and opinions."
no one has ever answered me better than this.
These videos of yours are incredibly soothing. Keep at it!
I’d watch this video if it were like 40 hours long
Great video! And piku niku is indeed the Greatest thing. I also highly recommend Momodora: reverie under the moonlight, for people that like the idea of soulsborne but prefer cute pixel art and also anime
Dude, im going to watch all of your content after that hl 2 video
When red dead 2 was released there was an article written about how the game “did not respect your time.” It was 100% right.
I tried to find it but could not find it
I just realized you weren’t a major channel… HOW, you put so much effort in your work and deserve a bigger audience
This was pretty good! I was excited to see what video you would make next; I found your channel through the Hotline Miami video and watched some of your older ones, thoroughly enjoying them.
Fantastic, another good work!
And thank you for the recommendation.
...
Also, I wonder if you have seen Cave Story yet...
I was just thinking about how the HM2 video was the one that got me into your channel, and then at the end I realized that it had way more views than your other videos. But honestly, after watching a handful of your videos, they're all really good and well written. It's surprising your channel isn't bigger. Keep up the good work man, I'm loving your stuff so far
i'll take a 4 hour indie game that leaves me fulfilled than a 4000 hour game that leaves me drained
Bruh what you're saying is basically that games are supposed to be fun and that they shouldn't be filled with, well, filler. That doesn't have anything to do with length.
2:55 I am confident, that I can beat Pikmin in 4 hours.
But that's probably accurate for first time players.
1. Assault is a fun ass starfox game
This...this is what makes so many games a chore to finish.
No Scott Sunday but they'll always be an Ovandal Sunday in my heart.
I spied myself in sempai's video, yes
And I love short sweet games, Pikuniku looks like a delight, will check it out.
im actually spending 100 hours and more completing Metal Gear Solid V, but if i just completed the history it would have been less than 10 hours. Fkng kill me please im fulton extracting everything i see now
My brother 100%'ed MGSV and i can't look at him the same way anymore
Excellent video, well written without being dry etc. Excited for more :)
I love rdr I like the length lets you take in all the things and get used to the game and characters
I'm also one of those people that came here for your Hotline Miami 2 video, courtesy of Jacob Geller, but I quite enjoy your stuff, so I'll be sticking around for sure ^^
haha, i chose the most inflammatory games possible to compare it to lmao
and thanks for sticking around!!! i hope you enjoy your stay!
Having played it recently i believe that gta 4 shows this game length phenomenon very well
The main game with Niko Belic as the protagonist has more than 90 MAIN missions without checkpoints which adds to the occassional road block missions that will need a few tries to get done.
The dlcs also give another perspective amd help to expand the story without being more of the same dark and gritty story
love watching your videos with my bf whenever they come out you make really great stuff :) make a video where you play barts nightmare
*nostalgia critic theme plays*
I feel like I'm in a completely different world of interest in games over here being a firm fan of Rain World with almost 300 hours in that game.
(As a precursor to my comment, I do think we definitely need more variety in game length. Having a good mix of shorter and longer games with a variety of graphical styles is a must. I like longer games with good stories personally, but I also enjoy a good quick game from time to time as well.)
I 100% recommend continuing RDR2.
This is why I like new vegas. You can speedrun the game and kill legate in a few hours or take it easy and roleplay as a crackhead
WAKE UP BABY BASED OVANDAL DROPPED A NEW ONE
2:16 WHERE TELL ME! PLEASE! I have looked everywhere online for the older physical copies of the persona games and they're all at least £100 in the uk. Ya have to help me please, i'm desperate
I got an American copy in 2014 off of eBay for £10 lmao, no idea where you'd be able to find it now, maybe CEX???
Yeah, I came from the Hotline Miami video. Nice content, subscribed.
I originally played Gunpoint just because there was a hat in TF2, but the game ended up being really short, but creative and enjoyable.
Reasons that a game being long is unequal to it being good
Reason 1:sayonara wild hearts
If I have to explain myself any more than I already have, something has gone horribly wrong in your life
I always enjoy your persona 3 music selection.
The lenght of this video is good to pass his message, good time management!, any more time puns?
God Hand is a perfectly lengthed and paced game.
No it isn't lmao
I'm in the same situation as you are with Red Dead Redemption 2, The Witcher 3 & Skyrim. I haven't started any of them even though I'd like to.
@Kostas Spirou I've got tons of games to play. That's the issue. I'm currently playing Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3.
