The reason this song is important is that many think metal is just screaming and banging on a guitar. This song showcases that these guys are truly talented and are a treasure.

    • @RawrItsJuul
      @RawrItsJuul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +54

People who think that are ignorant and don't know what they're missing. Metal bands have made the most beautiful ballads from the beginning. It's just easier to listen to the shit that's being pushed down everyone's throats without thinking, instead of exploring more music. Cause that would take effort..

Actually, metal is about screaming and banging on a guitar. Occasionally, there is a guy here and there who get to say something and whose voices do not hide behind instruments, like in this song; but let us not take an exception and make it the rule.

@@RawrItsJuul yeah! this cover is the effect of the original being underrated back then, and people not taking the issue. it tells, as a rising issue, maybe due to the hopeful tune or something else idk, and this being the result of decades of ignorance that lead to this cover, the angry thoughts asocialitet with this issue by those who suffer under it now... the expression of feelings being unheard or disregarded even if asking for help or just understanding (someone like Robin Wiliams or Chester Bennington) best of the best imop... the thought of being alone in a crowd or the fake persona you post online (edited in fear of imperfections= every social media star, most youtubers, reality tv, reddit, selebity suiside, every humian being that has not told thy'er true story yet, issues, and sexiuality (especialy vs religion, even that makes no sense with Jesus or God on most parts (hate not love)), mental health stories, shame in near comuneity, and all that)... this song spand broad, the cover even broader for me, as a rock fan, due to rock and (emo music, i gues) talking about issues that most can identify with... i will post this at every sos reactions i see...

Best comment I ever read about this cover was something along the lines of:
The original was a cautionary tale, a warning about where we would all be headed if we continued the way we were.
The Disturbed version is a bitter and melancholy death cry from the generation that realizes it's too late.
Edit: Holy shit 1.1k likes!? Wow, I'm humbled

Thank You... was going to say that myself. many of the reactionary video makers here, don't even get to what the song is about.. I am old enough to remember when Simon and Garfunkel came out with that, while it was more up beat in tempo, it was cautionary of the future if we kept on a certain path, done in almost a "folk" song style.. Davids cover version, is darker, more potent telling us it is damn near too late and we may never leave the path that we chose.. But, his voice, God Damn, his voice just drives in the point.

Prior to this, the only similar experience I’ve ever had was the choral version of Samuel Barber’s Adagio for strings. I’ve always loved the original (long before ever seeing Platoon) but something equally transformative happens when you put people’s voices to it rather than strings; definitely tear-worthy.
      Agnus Dei: th-cam.com/video/AiuC_CaObbI/w-d-xo.html
It’s slower than the original, but there’s just something about the choral arrangement that just indescribably enhances the whole thing, much in the way Disturbed did here. Not to everyone’s taste, but if it is, you’ll know. :)

There's a great vid of David Draiman talking about making this cover and how apprehensive he was about taking on what is arguably one of the most iconic folk songs in history. What he has done is make it his own, from the completely different emotion, to the changes in timing, he reinvented this piece to speak to the souls of all who are privileged to have heard it. From old guys like me that grew up with this song, to a whole new audience just digging it now, David has set the bar to a whole new level. Music will never be the same thanks to this. The only word I had after sitting in stunned silence after my first listening was.... Powerful.

Anyway, those are my thoughts many may not agree with my take on it. I absolutely ADORE this version. I can’t seem to get enough of it. I bought it from iTunes and I listen to it over and over again. David, and Disturbed as a whole, are (to me) the pinnacle of hardrock / metal in this decade. I understand everyone has tastes and what not, but David Draiman has this ability to convey emotion (across the whole range, I've heard him do it with rage, anger, disgust, pride, sorrow, regret and catharsis separately) along with some real talent, a powerhouse voice and the balls to use it all. Disturbed pulls me into emotional states more than any other metal band. You don't just hear David Draiman, you feel him. And that's why Disturbed is fucking incredible.
Needless to say I liked this song, and I'm only surprised so many people are surprised that he can do this. He's done stuff like this before, a bunch. Deep track Disturbed is best Disturbed.

I seem to recall he’s operatically trained, and has worked with the best rock vocal coach in the industry pretty much from the beginning. Add to it being freakishly talented, and having, as you note, the balls to actually go for some of these unexpected angles for stuff, make him, and Disturbed as a whole, part of the pantheon of music, not just metal.

Simon and Garfunkle saw a vision of the future when they wrote this song in the 60s. A lot of the song almost perfectly describes the smart phone age.
"People talking without speaking" = texting
"And the people bowed and prayed to the neon gods they made" = your head is always down in a bowing/praying position when youre looking down at your phone

David Draiman- the lead vocalist for Disturbed- has said in different interviews that he had to go to a place with his voice that he hadn't gone since he was a teenager when they recorded this cover. He grew up Jewish and was trained as a Cantor. Not to mention that his Great-Grandfather was the lead cantor at one of the largest Synagogues in Jerusalem so music is in his blood. Hope that gives you a little insight into the richness of his voice and where it comes from.

The original is good but I absolutely love disturbeds cover SO much more!!! This is one of my favorite songs of all time!! David’s vocals blow me away in this song! The message is so important and I love how disturbed chose to depict it. This song always gives me chills and brings tears to my eyes. I’m so glad you liked it so much!!!!

This is one of Disturbed's best songs. I also recommend their song "Overburdened". That one is my personal favorite from Disturbed. For a similar build-up feel, I would also recommend Halstorm's "Rock Show".

This guys voice is no baby boy tenor, that's for sure. Also take it from me, as a baritone voiced lad myself it's tough singing that low in chest, but of course baritones range from being able to do a good chunk of the bass register all the way to barely reaching the top of the bass register (the higher part also ranges of course). Either way, it takes a lot of skill to sing as low as he was at the beginning in chest very well and as full as he was doing it.

If you're a baritone, I think you'd really enjoy Peter Steele, the late frontman of Type O Negative.

Goddamit!! That is haunting. Makes it impossible to deny your own emotions. Beautiful. Until this point R.E.M.s Everybody Hurts was the most touching song I’d ever heard but this surpasses that song. And I’m a Slayer-Megadeth-Metallica-Death Angel die hard fan. This rips the emotion out of you and onto the surface every bit as effectively as thrash metal does. Transcendent!!

Have listened to this song since 1972, when one of my friends “borrowed” her brother’s Simon & Garfunkel album to play. I loved the song immediately but as I grew up and understood the lyrics, I felt the song demanded more anger and passion than Simon & Garfunkel could give it. David Draiman’s version is EXACTLY what I’ve been waiting to hear...this song is a call to arms...a reminder that remaining silent in the face of darkness makes you complicit! Particularly apropos now. Check out his collaboration with Myles Kennedy...absolutely breathtaking!

Suzanne Marie I feel the original was a warning to future generations and that this version conveys the outrage that warning was ignored.
It’s always open to personal interpretation but I see it as a warning about technology. “Neon Gods”, “heads bowed” as in screen time, “talking without speaking” “hearing without listening”. The more technology connects us, the farther apart humanity becomes.

    • @YourLocalWitchDJ
      @YourLocalWitchDJ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Erik Baldwin I don’t think it had anything to do with technology at all, if I’m being perfectly honest; it’s talking about hollow words, saying things without meaning it. Be it apologies or promises, “talking without speaking” is empty words. Then “hearing without listening” is ignoring people; in one ear, and out the other, and not thinking about what people say as a step to improve yourself. Then “writing songs that voices never shared” is basically people not expressing their emotions. The “neon god” is nothing more than valuing the things around you, the glitz and glamour, more than your personal interests and connections, family, and friends. It’s equally relevant both to Simon and Garfunkel’s time, and today.

@Lanta ChiDc So very obviously that is what it is, thank you for being the only other person I've seen with that mindset. Of course, it was written in 1964 so . . . but I think this kind of divisiveness was probably starting around then and Paul Simon was able to see it? Okay, I have heard he wrote it because of TV, but still, it is so apropos of the problems of the world in general with all the either/or, and never some of each. Everyone isn't always correct, and everyone isn't always wrong. And we can all use some respectful listening--and speaking for that matter. Empathy. Less GREED!

These two points of view are not conceptually exclusive. Technology has made it much easier to find others with the same views and ideologies, and this contributes to complacency in thought and action.

I absolutely adore the original and this version.
Both are perfect in their own rights. S&Gs Version is so simplistic. Just two voices and a guitar.
Hearing Disturbeds version for the first time might let you think "Well. There was one voice and some instruments" because his voice is so fragile however powerful and rich, that you tend to only focus on it exclusively. But hearing it multiple times let's you turn your focus more onto the instruments and enjoy the tune even more.
At least that is how I felt hearing it for the fist couple of times.
It is one of the best covers of any song I have ever heard. Not many bands managed to crate a version of a song that is equal/better than the original of a classic song like Sound of Silence.

    • @ricardovargas4546

The song was written in 1964. It's a Folk music protest song. JFK had just been assassinated. Vietnam was ramping up. The Civil Rights movement was growing and getting louder. The Moon was coming. Technology was slowly taking over. The average person was overwhelmed. Fading into the background as the modem world was emerging. Their voices fading also as corporate America began to shape the new reality. Until from the people there was only The Sound of Silence.
