I’m 75. I grew up listening to Simon & Garfunkel. I had never heard of Disturbed and certainly haven’t had any interest in heavy metal bands. This version has impacted me so strongly that it is impossible to describe. I have probably listened to this version well over a hundred times. I feel his voice and message move thru me. David Draiman is truly gifted and the entire group created magic. I love it.
Same here same age. Just blew me away..his looks did not bother me either..usually does..the message is also magnified by his voice and the backup music..AWESOME..words fail me
What the f does "situational awareness" have to do with pure gut feelings of emotion that can't be described? Scott Carson I agree wholeheartedly with you.
I saw a comment made to another reactor about this song that went something like, "Simon and Garfunkle's version was a gentle warning about what was to come, but Disturbed's version is rage that the warning was not heeded." I think it hit the nail on the head.
I can absolutely agree with that, Marie! I would like to say up front that when the original came out by S&G, it was generally not "my" music. I knew the song, but I didn't really like it. When I heard about Disturbed, however, it - to be honest - first gave me goose bumps and then also produced tears. In other words - THAT really touched my heart. And that's what music has to do for me in general. If music and singing do just that - then it's good music and good singing. What I would also like to add is that, as presented by Disturbed, the text makes sense to me. The entire work not only brings something to the ears, but simply feeling and showing this feeling to the outside world. This is something that I generally lack in our world today. Money, mammon ... and feeling, showing feelings and living by them - that's missing. Not for everyone - but unfortunately for more and more people.
I played it for my 77 year old mom, she was surprised and speechless. I had the honor of seeing Simon and Garfunkel do it live in Denver. I bought tickets to see Disturbed last year in Chicago, but it was canceled.
***** The Warning ***** "And the people bowed and prayed, to the neon god they made." ~ Paul Simon "And the people bowed and prayed, to the golden calf they made." ~ Old Testament
This is the most amazing cover of a song I've ever seen... Takes your breathe away... leaves you speechless, reaches right to your Soul and grabs it by the collar and demands you WAKE UP! Amazing.
I was a sophomore in high school when Simon and Garfunkel came out with this song. It was soft and tranquil and the words got lost in the melody. Davids's rendition hits you upside your head. It's a soul-shaking achingly beautiful rendition.
Funny thing is with David draiman it was either music or law his parents greatly disapproved of him getting into music can't imagine their faces when he turned out to be a big success
It’s the angst it deserves now. I like to think of it thus: The original : an observation on the world. The state of humanity. Unsure of itself. The Gregorian version : the prayer we would listen Disturbed : we didn’t listen and the message gets angrier.
Paul Simon said this is the best version of this song ever. He said his version was a warning for what was to come but Disturbed’s version is a reaction to the world for not listening to that warning.
I am not a rock musician or a folk music fan but disturbed version has changed the song and made its meaning more relevant for today social media loving generation lift up your head open your ears and see the beauty of the world around you
The first time I heard this song, I had tears streaming down my face, already knowing the song and what the lyrics meant. Best way I've heard describing the difference between the two songs' power is that the Simon and Garfunkel song was a plea to the masses while the Disturbed version is the anger and anguish towards the people who ignored that plea.
Single best cover of any song by any band, ever. It’s complete and utter perfection. He had a vocal cord lesion during this performance and had his ENT Dr. on standby not knowing how it would hold up. He had cord surgery a couple days after this. His talent is unmeasured.
David Draiman trained to be a cantor, coming from a long line of cantors. He wasn't feeling well but did the show anyway. Paul Simon was 23 when he wrote this song as a warning to society. David's version is what has happened as we didn't heed the word. Paul Simon said that this is his favourite version of this iconic song.
Johnny Cash covering Hurt might disagree, but those are the only two songs in the conversation imo. I read somewhere once, and agree, that S&G was a warning, this was a mourning.
Brother, if you only knew how many times this song has made me cry! That's how you know a composition is well done: it creates an emotional response rather than just being "sound"!
David has such a powerful, intense voice but has so much control and constraint. I've watched countless reactions to this song and many are just as blown away by the emotion. I admit every single time I hear this song I tear up. He encompasses the lyrics and you feel it.
David had the flu this might with 103 fever. Sitting be ause he wasnt sure he could stand. This is an experience...goosebumps and tears. So incredible. At 77 i listen to this a few times a day for inspiration and to calm both. David was asked did he sing like an angel or a devil. I think he responded " both" or something to thst affect. Great response by you. Go listen to it again alone. Bathe in it, experience it. If you dont feel, get goose bumps, tear up or just cry then you are souless. Davids voice crawls inside you and grabs your soul.
This is an epic arrangement and performance! I am affected every single time I hear it, goosebumps EVERY time, sometimes tears, depending on where I am and how immersed I am in it. I'd love to see you react to the video. The imagery is absolutely stunning and supports their vision of this song. Reactors have done both, so don't be shy. There are some of us who stalk reactions on this song and are endlessly fascinated watching others discover this masterpiece. You internalize it, you at least need to watch the official video for yourself, even if you don't react to it here.
First time I heard this song was in an earlier episode of “Blacklist” with James Spader. I hunted this song down and finally found it. Amazing amazing song! Goose bumps to tears everytime ❤️
I am an 88yo woman..I of course listened to S and G way back. This execution is so outstanding it affects me to see how the warnings are still not heeded.
No need to say you don't have the words that people expect from a reaction video. Your reaction was obviously heart felt and real. That's all that's needed. Great video, great reaction!
I was going to school in New York city. Visited the village alot ,saw Paul on the streets frequently walking along Mc Doogle. Street. At night this was the way the streets looked especially in the fall,on rainy nights. Riding the subways and seeing the neon lights flash by.His song was quite descriptive of our experiences of the City at the time. Loneliness is part of that City because of its vastness the emptiness despite the thousands. It is now the same as it was then . A reason I left New York for wide open grandure of the western Colorado natures beauty.
When I watch a reaction video to a song I know and love, I don't really care about the "vocal analysis" or the technicalities. I mainly hope that the reactor will be as moved by the music as I am, so I can (on some level) say, "Did you SEE that? Incredible, right?!" and hear an answer back of, "YES!" I really enjoyed your reaction to this for exactly that reason. Keep it up. I look forward to checking out your other videos.
Hi Ian from the U.K. Disturbed “Sound of Silence” I’m bed bound 24/7 and will never walk again. This song, but how it’s sung by David, brings out so much emotion I carry and can’t tell others, close to me. It is THE best cover I’ve ever heard. But it should be listened when watching the official video. Then the words and his meanings become so clear, and editing on the video is superb❤ I have listened to this version maybe 500 times, I get the feeling the emotions, the loss of close ones, and the way I was paralysed!! It just makes me think and should let people close to me, including officials who argue over stuff they should know and as the song says! “Never Listen” sorry to go on, but in my 50’s yet I can say comfortably, this version brings tears to my eyes and it’s good to show your emotions!! The best ever. Bravo Disturbed! Ian, United Kingdom
Don't apologize for not being a voice coach...your reaction says more than any breakdown of the simple mechanics of what you just witnessed and how it spoke to your heart.
Paul was the message. David is the warning. By far the most powerful rendition of this song. One of my favorite and gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
That is the best way I have heard this idea communicated. Paul was the message. David is the warning. We don't want to hear a future singer that will reimagined it as the lamentation.
I wish my Mom could've heard this version too. Maybe they did. The song was right on target when it came out in the 60ties. This version spot on nails it for these times, and the way we humans have evolved. People blab on and never say anything. In politics especially. Most people don't hear what anyone says, they just wait to talk again. This version blew up my heart, it stirred emotions I haven't felt in years. I cried buckets, and listened to it over and over. I simply HAD to. And watching others, like you, has let me know I am not alone in my reaction. Peace Man.
I'm 61. I was a year and a half old when the S&G version of this song was released. My mom was a huge S&G fan and had all of their LPs. Once I was old enough to appreciate music I discovered her albums. I played the heck out of her S&G albums (as well as all the others). My mom passed the year before Disturbed released this cover, so she never got to hear it. I am absolutely positive that she would have loved this version. This rendition makes me tear up ever time I hear it; both because of David's emotional performance and being reminded of my mom.
There is some kind of powerful energy that hits everyone who hears this right in the heart. Right. In. The. Heart. You can see it happen when watching people react to this for the first time but the surprise is that it seems to happen EVERY time you hear it…and sometimes the strength of it is too much and the tears come. This is a song for the ages.
You may not be a vocal coach, but you knew the history and meaning of the song better than any I've seen react to this. Like you, I grew up with a mother who loved S & G, and I'd never really felt this song until I heard this cover, you showed that beautifully.
How timeless is this song??!!?? Disturbed’s version hits hard to what we’re living thru. Amazing song by Paul Simon, David’s voice brings it to life. Just awesome.
I have watched at least 20 reviewers while they listen to this and they all get goose bump and a lot of them do cry. It is very touching how they put this together
This is the absolute best cover of the song, and even Paul Simon think that this is the way, that it should had been performed from the start. And to count in, that David had a cold, performing this, he is absolute impressive. Pentatonix also made a cover of this song, and it is also beautiful performed, thou different, because acappella, and it leans hevelly on to Disturb's cover.
Another amazing reaction to an amazing song!!! You are killing it! You are one the most sincere people reacting to music right now. And the way you exude emotion. It's just as powerful as the song you're listening to. Your insight is always on point. Keep rocking my man!
i am very much enjoying watching your musical journey young man....the way you actually feel the music is very inspiring to me...i also find your grasp on what the music is trying to relate is so spot on ...keep them coming!!!!
One of the coolest things about this was that Paul Simon after seeing this, called David, and told him that this was the most emotional rendition of this song. And yes that really happened. Now that is really saying something.
Not only that, but it is apparently the only Simon and Garfunkel cover that Paul Simon not only included on his social media but added it to his playlist.
@@juniorjohnson9509 Her? He trained to become a Jewish Cantor but he didn't finish. Jewish Cantor's are classically trained vocalists. Just stop. I'm not going to argue with you on a thread on TH-cam. I'm correct.
David Draiman never uses auto tune ..the producers of Conan’s show tried but he gave dagger eyes to Conan so they stoped. The poor man was extremely sick with the ‘flu, a temp of 104 and a cyst on his vocal chords. He refused to cancel but he had to sit down to sing. I cry every single time I listen to this, no many times I hear it. He has the most powerful voice I have ever heard. I suggest you watch the studio version with all the visuals..it will blow you away!
Best cover I've heard! David Draiman...amazing voice!! A powerful yet soulful voice that can go from warm baritone to angelic tenor, from clear as a crystal to rasp/distortion/vocal fry and back on a dime, which is incredibly difficult to do and he makes it look so damn easy! He has a timbre in his voice that I've never heard before........just hauntingly beautiful and pure tonal properties to it! An awesome talent. Loved your reaction and your take on the performance Mr.I ........
It digs into your soul because David puts his raw emotions into it . And he was sick when he sang this on Conan but still sung to perfection. You should all watch the actual soundtrack video ❤
I hear you brother, this song is so deep an powerful, Paul Simon was politely warning us about " man's disconnect with man " through the TV as such, Disturbed version is almost a shout at us to re- connect, we hardly communicate any more, TV, phones, computers, computer games, we all to busy🥺
I have only seen 1 opera singer recognize that David was extremely ill with the flu doing this. If you listen to the video of it you compared to this one, you can hear it but this one seems more raw and real. I just love his voice. This world with its texts, emails and various emojis keep us from connecting even emotionally. Your reaction is why years later I am still watching reactions to him. Simon himself said David did it better and is now as much his as it is their song. Can you imagine? The original artist gives double thumbs up to David Draimen.
If you liked the live version you should see the visuals of their official video! Holy smokes, makes me tear up almost every time and goose bumps for sure!! Some other singers you can ‘feel’ every time they sing are Dimash Kudaibergen, he sings in many languages and many octaves but boy can you feel every word/note he’s singing! He’s out of this world!! And a female singer I’ve found recently is Faouzia, she emotes SO well and has an incredible range too. I really like her stripped versions because you can really hear her more than what production does with the song. Not just her range, but she is incredible! Enjoy discovering new artists and your reactions are great!
If you want the full feeling of what Disturbed is conveying. Then watch the video they put out. It ihas no auto tune, so you get the full impact of David's powerful ability to make you feel it more then he does here. That is just how I feel. I get chills and tears each and every time I hear him.
I have yet to see anyone on TH-cam reacting to Disturbed's version, play it through without stopping to comment. It's a damn shame!!! By doing so the full impact and grandeur of this version is being missed. Please save reaction until it has been listened to uninterrupted.
We are all stunned by this performance, and there are no words for the powerful emotions that this performance instills in all of us and the beauty of the voice makes us all silent. You reaction is the same as mine every time that I watch this performance and I wish I could call it something else other than performance, but as I stated earlier...there are no words!
Wonderful reaction man.. even Simon loves this cover.. says The Sound of Silence now belongs to Disturbed.. that is how much he loved the emotion David conveys. I have listened to this a thousand times and still get goosebumps every single time.
Everyone sheds tears while listening to David sing. He has an incredible way of sucking you into the lyrics by his voice, and it reaches the most inner depth of your soul. The best version yet ever sung. I've watched a few others how they reacted, all have had a tear or two!
I am certainly not a musician but just a child from the 70's when this song was always a classic which my mom listened to. I listened to it then and i listen to it now, with Disturbed making it even hard ass, now,. It elicited a message in 1963 and this message has been beautifully on carried on by them.
I grew up in that Era, in the 60's. The 1960's. It was a beautiful song then, as it is now. But there was a war going on then. And many of us cannot forget those years. This song helps us to remember those years and the turmoil of many struggles for the youth of those times. And the young men who became soldiers......and the young men who did not. And yes, there were many people protesting the war, at that time.
David sings this song to my soul. It hit me so hard I couldn't stop crying and I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. And yes always loved the song. But they blew me away in this day and age. Yes extremely powerful !!! Loved this
This song and your review both got me right in the feels. When I first heard this I’m not ashamed to say I had tears rolling down my face, it gave me goose pimples. I can’t help feeling that Disturbed’s version is the way this song was always meant to sound, with all the emotion and depth of Draiman’s incredible voice.
Melancholy is always the word I use for this song, so it’s nice to hear someone else use it. What I love about this cover is that David and the arrangement forces you to take in the lyrics and emotions.
You and David made me cry at the beginning in the end. All the times I have watched reactors to the song You are my favorite! I will search and see your reaction to the video it is amazing! Thank you for teaching people some of the history behind the song. Some people don't know!
I really appreciated your true reaction. I watch a lot of reaction videos and I have to say, the folks that FEEL the song are my favorite. Why? Because even after hearing this well over 300 times I still cry. A little over 3 years ago I wrote a comment that I still believe in today. It said: When Simon and Garfunkle recorded this it was like a whispered warning. When Disturbed recorded it, it was the rage of the warning not being heeded. The words were prophetic when it was written. They are now the words of stark reality. We now bow to the Gods of electronics and the silence is deafening.
I think I read somewhere Paul Simon gave his blessing on this cover, this was so well done it was almost gifted to them as the song should have been sung.. so powerful
Great reaction. Another distribut song you should consider to react is “reason to fight” . Also there is another singer call Rag n Bone Man , he has some songs worth listening, “human”, “skin” , “alone” and “lay my body down” .
My dude ... I must've watched 30 reaction videos to this song by now and this is far and away the best. Your raw emotion is exactly how I reacted the first time I heard it, and how I *continue* to react with every new listen. I adore this version and I could watch 30 more react videos after this and still get emotional. Thanks for this brother I wish you well ...
Every bit of that song, from David to every bit of the instruments, builds you and builds you and then just when you are about to explode, gently sets you back down, completely exhausted.
I love your reaction to this song. I would love to hear your reaction to Hold on to Memories which they sing at every concert. The official live video shows how their fans react to this song which is absolutely amazing and so touching. Another great song they do is A Reason to Fight, the official live video is a must, also they do this song at every concert which is trying to prevent drug abuse, depression and suicide. They are actually saving lives.
Thanks for your reaction. I felt so moved by the song. David drainman made his version so hauntingly beautiful! I actually shed a tear. So captivated by the whole set up and ensemble.

As a small child when the original was big, I have a place in my heart for it. But I believe this rendition brings the angst that the lyrics deserve.
It’s the angst it deserves now.
I like to think of it thus:
The original : an observation on the world. The state of humanity. Unsure of itself.
The Gregorian version : the prayer we would listen
Disturbed : we didn’t listen and the message gets angrier.
Which is why it needed to be done.

As my Mother would say... A voice on loan from God. no denying the perfection of Disturbeds interpretation.

Peace Man.
im 69...cant express it any better...
Could not have said it better myself... Being a 50 your old dude the song hits me right to the core of my soul. Never had a song do that to me before.
David is a badass. Everytime I listen to this it moves me and brings tears. So much emotion
The thing is he was very sick with fever and sore throat and still he did it justice! Amazing.
Thanks, Helle. I'll have to check out their version as well. Thanks for hanging out!
I totally agree. His interpretation totally matches the words.
Another amazing reaction to an amazing song!!! You are killing it! You are one the most sincere people reacting to music right now. And the way you exude emotion. It's just as powerful as the song you're listening to. Your insight is always on point. Keep rocking my man!
I hear desperation in his voice reflecting today's Times and yesterday's! Love, love your reaction!
His voice is perfection, I listen to this every day!
I've watched lots of reactions to this song but yours touched me very deeply! Your thoughts and comments are so real. Very well done!
i am very much enjoying watching your musical journey young man....the way you actually feel the music is very inspiring to me...i also find your grasp on what the music is trying to relate is so spot on ...keep them coming!!!!
Hear Hear!! 💜
"To the NEON GODS, THEYYY MAAAAADE" -- I get tears. Every single time.
I think that everyone cries the first time that they hear this. David Draiman is a classically trained vocalist.
No. Her was trained as a cantor, NOT "classically" trained.
@@juniorjohnson9509 Her? He trained to become a Jewish Cantor but he didn't finish. Jewish Cantor's are classically trained vocalists.
Just stop. I'm not going to argue with you on a thread on TH-cam. I'm correct.
Not classically trained. Trained as a cantor.
I cry every time I hear it
Yes, he was a Cantor
This version brings out emotions when it wasn’t expected. That’s what music does if it’s good, no?🙌🙌❤️👍🏼👍🏼
When i heard this version, i finally knew the meaning.
You don't need words to say. Your reaction spoke volumes. It was beautiful.
David has one of the most beautiful powerful voices ever. It’s haunting beautiful.
66 and cry with deep emotion when I hear this version. The studio video is really deep.
Heard professional musicians and regular people reaction, and this song transends all. I still have no words.
David had the flu and a temperature of 102 during this performance. To sing so well while sick and sitting down speaks to the power of this man!
Love how you said, “sometimes poetry can resonate so much that it ripples through time”. That was beautifully said. ❤️
Once you visit the Original Video, meaning takes place to the point of tears! The art is breathtaking! The voice will always move us.
Your empathy is so rare, I feel exactly the same about this stunning interpretation... Thanks for your reaction❤️
Love David's interpretation of this song. Love your reaction too. I still get chills listening to this, Thank you for reacting to this one💖
Most heartfelt reaction I've seen, I've seen a LOT. Subbed.
You have given me the most honest and heartfelt reaction to this and I've watched at least 20 of these reacts!!
David sings this song to my soul. It hit me so hard I couldn't stop crying and I grew up with Simon and Garfunkel. And yes always loved the song. But they blew me away in this day and age. Yes extremely powerful !!! Loved this
So many reaction videos I’ve watched this past year, from Dimash to Home Free. Yours are by far the most genuine.
Thanks for a great reaction video. Your reaction seems so genuine.
I’ve watched a lot of reactions to this performance and yours is the best. It was so moving because it’s obvious how much the song moved you. ♥️
What a true, heartfelt reaction. I enjoyed your reaction as much or more than the song. I truly appreciate you taking the time to do this!
Your reaction says all I needed to know. It got you and that's epic 👏👏
Melancholy is always the word I use for this song, so it’s nice to hear someone else use it. What I love about this cover is that David and the arrangement forces you to take in the lyrics and emotions.
I tear up every time. This is moving. I am 59 now and love the original but WOW! this man nailed it.
Your reaction was beaitiful! You made me cry. I love this song but you just made it the best ! Luv to you from Ohio 🌹
It got me too bro! Goosebumps, chills...choked up. This is a Masterpiece!
We now bow to the Gods of electronics and the silence is deafening.
wow..i cant add to that as tears roll down my cheeks, my emotion left from this is devastating....
If he does a reaction to a reson to fight it needs to be a live one.
Quite simply a masterpiece. Cried like a baby.
I added them thanks for the suggestions. And thanks for hanging out!
That song makes me cry, just thinking about it. Lots of stuff has added to that, but I've recommended it for other reactors.
Thanks for your reaction. I felt so moved by the song. David drainman made his version so hauntingly beautiful! I actually shed a tear. So captivated by the whole set up and ensemble.
A beautiful rendition and your reaction is spot on.
Alot of people 😢cry. Including me.💚
