I love this show. I feel like Andrew is really talking to all of us, who know very little about watches in a nice friendly way.
The Feynman Technique😏
This is a really nice watch, but I would respectfully suggest that it's a less essential purchase than, say, a Dassault Falcon or that Greek Island you've been looking at recently...
@@OlympicAirwaysAirlines Umm... 😉
@@OlympicAirwaysAirlines Omfori Island looks nice... 👌
Way too high
🤣
Hahaha
This new format is brilliant. Innovative and actually worth listening to as opposed to the usual watch channels of glamourising self worth. Well done. 👏🏽
Hmm would you rather have an A Lange Söhne 1815 Chronograph Boutique Edition and pocket $20,000 or one Omega?
I agree on the ALS instead.
For me an ALS Lange 1 in rose gold and pocket the other half. I am a movement junkie and I love that asymmetrical yet elegant dial. Or sell my house and cash out my retirement account for my grail watch LANGEMATIK PERPETUAL.
I bought the "poor mans" version of this, the Cal 321 Ed White Speedmaster... love it, and guess what?? No silly engraving on the back!
Metallurgist: So, what how many metals do you want in this alloy for your new watch?
Omega: Yes.
Occam's Razor: They went with "Canopus Gold" because "Sirius Gold" sounds silly. ("Serious gold.")
That, or it sounds too close to the DC Comics character who would become their Solomon Grundy (Cyrus Gold)
I love this show. You guys should definitely release it as a podcast too!
My favorite Speedy has to the Tintin. The backstory of how that one got to be is just so obscure and intriguing at the same time 🚀
Same. I love tintin, read all of them and have them in the garage I think
A very interesting conversation on this Speedy 321 Can O' Puss. All this discussion about the dot over 90 is driving me dotty. Allegedly according to no one in particular who's best friend is a partly injured fossil it was a mistake to put the dot over 90 and it was only noticed after the release of the watch. Both the bezel designer and product manager were told to write 1000 lines of "I must not put the dot over 90" both in Sanskrit and Klingon and were sent to their bedroom without supper. This affected both, one (don't know which) walks around making sparrow hawk noises and is easily spotted and they are covered in frightened pigeon poo and the other has gone underground and works as a part time mole.
On a less serious note the 321 Canoe Of Puce is an interesting watch though. The mixing of super shiny stuff is great if you want to get noticed from 1/2 a mile away and that tri layer Onyx dial looks fantastic. I wonder how many onyx rings had to be recovered and recycled from bus stops around the globe to get enough as that would certainly add expense. That Taxi Meter scale is also a nice touch.
I'll get my coat.
beautiful words
As much as I respect Omega this watch costs the same as 2 white Gold Daytonas which aren’t too difficult to acquire either. For once Rolex is actually the better value for money proposition here…
apples to oranges, daytona's been around a track but never been to the moon.
@@hawaiiyamat yes but how many watches do they need to create to keep telling us the same thing over and over again
>9000 probably
Pfffft another misstep by Omega
@@hawaiiyamat neither has this speedmaster, the one that went to the moon was the revised version
Omega were doing SO well until it came to that case back -- the hippofugly engraving, the blue jewel in the eye position, and the misaligned omega are all dealbreakers. They should offer an option to NOT have any of that mess.
Yeah those are the reasons I won't buy this. What a shame...
@@mrbubbles293 In all seriousness, even if I had Elon Musk Money, I wouldn't buy this watch for those reasons. If the case back were unadorned, I probably WOULD buy it if I had Elon Musk Money -- the entire rest of the watch is beautifully executed.
And I am speaking here as someone who bought one of the new 3861 Sapphire watches in the past year -- the base Moonwatch, with sapphire. That's a "plain" design, but it is also beautifully executed and quite elegant.
Sir, did You notice that the logo on the case back is the new one, not the vintage one?
These guys are discussing the watch based solely on press pictures, in which the watch is lit to make the engraving as visible as possible (side lit). However, in person at most angles the engraving is very subtle and less distracting.
I hope you guys never stop doing this series. Love listening to you guys!
You guys had me at “Gold” 🤣 such a funny video and yes dot over 90 speedmaster enthusiasts are weirdos (you know who you are 👀)
19:32 This is what evevates this watch channel above the others. I never thought I could merge my love of watches and movie trivia but here we are.
If you see the picture of the blue crystal being put into the back glass, it is in reverse, so attached to the inside of the back glass.
I mostly agree with this offering being outlandishly price. However I would rather pay $80k USD for this Speedmaster over spending $40k for a “Tiffany” blue Rolex OP 41.
For the price you could get almost two A Lange chronograph though
@@DirtFather407 I’m seeing 1815 chronos going for around $60k. Not exactly two but a better value for sure.
@@DirtFather407 if only you could find an A Lange right now :( been trying
For 80k I'll just buy like 10 Grand Seiko for every occasion
@@db9071 The pepsi aren't my thing but I do like the batman one, pretty much the only Rolex I want.
But nah man 80k is plenty enough to build 10 (or more) GS collection since the lower end one like the Quartz only goes for about 3 - 4k a piece.
A bit of those and some of the middle model (6 - 10k) with either Spring Drive or Hi-Beat and you can absolutely get 10 for 80k with a weeklong dinner at Michellin starred restaurants with the spare
This show is perfect, like legitimately fantastic. A pod cast would be a damn gold mine. The music, the conversation, the images/video and the information given is just great! Keep it up chaps!
I totally agree with you on all aspects of this beautiful watch, especially the ridiculous Hippo.
My favourite is the Moonphase Aventurine. As the astronaut in 2010 says, "My God, it's full of stars!". It's like a Speedymoon, but 100 times better, and it's big enough to fall right through and out into space.
Really love these videos, no matter what the piece being discussed I’m hooked the whole ~30min. Keep it up!
It's better than a podcast because u can actually see high quality pictures of the watch and details they're talking about. Thanks.
The entire case and bracelet must be made from the metal only found on the moon for the watch to be $81,000.
A real "moonshot" project. If Omega can sell a enough watches to collectors to pay for the R&D and tooling then it's already a success for them. The real value of such a project is the publicity and perceived quality of the brand.
Someone gets it. The point of this watch and the Aqua Terra Ultra light and the center Tourbillon is to demonstrate Omega's watchmaking prowess and to move Omega 's perceived desirability. These halo watches are not meant to sell in huge quantities but to move Omega upmarket. Omega has been producing watches that are as good as or even exceed the offerings from rival Rolex but the wider public haven't fully realized that and Omega is now setting out to change Omega's perceived value in the market place. Omega is making desirable sought after watches and the wider public are going to discover this over the coming years. Omega has innovated with new movements and new materials and new complications whereas all Rolex has done is engineered a fake shortage and introduced some new colored dials. Omega wants to regain it's position in the industry pre quartz crisis where Omega was king. This watch is a shot across the bow of Rolex!
@@almac9203 You are spot on and everything you said except for the fake shortage (unless you mean something other than what I'm thinking). There is way more demand than supply. Everybody's going crazy to buy Rolex, direct from ADs, for obvious reasons. I get calls to buy new Rolexes all of the time. You don't see them in the case but that doesn't mean they're getting less watches than before. The watches are in the back, going straight to the chosen customers in the private rooms and being shipped out. The ADs sell just as many watches as ever... it's just that the demand has skyrocketed and they now rarely put watches in the case.
@@damachine3 I meant Rolex is limiting production purposely and is happy with the shortages on certain models as it creates higher perceived desirability. I also believe some AD'S are selling Rolex watches directly to the Grey market dealers which creates the shortage at the retail level. Some AD'S are dishonestly selling watches directly to Grey Market resellers instead of retail customers. Have you wondered how Grey market resellers have brand new Rolexes for sale when the same models aren't available to retail customers? Rolex is happy for the shortages at AD'S and the high secondary prices and ignores the dodgy practices going on with Grey Market resellers. The Rolex shortages at AD'S and the high secondary market prices isn't a completely natural event and has been engineered and even encouraged. Porsche has similar problems but they go out of their way to resolve it by bumping up production on sought after models and they also investigate and threaten speculators and try their best to get product in the hands of real customers rather than flippers whereas I see Rolex doing nothing and perhaps enjoying the distorted market. People think Rolex is this exclusive boutique brand but they are mass produced and sell around one million watches a year. Any AD that sells watches to Grey Market resellers instead of customers should lose their license as it's driving the shortages.
@@almac9203 Nothing that I said above contradicts with what you're saying directly above, but I would add a couple of clarifying points here. I am a major, long time, watch collector (my collection is worth about $2M and a little more than half of that is Rolex...partly because my AD sold me a Rainbow Daytona). We need to be specific when we say that Rolex is limiting production purposefully. I would agree from the standpoint that their brand totally depends on exclusivity...so they will always ensure there's not enough for everybody. Of course they don't want to make things available to everyone if they could. Their brand relies on that and protecting their brand, and perceived exclusivity, is everything. You and I agree 100% on that. What I'm saying is they haven't limited production any more lately from what they already had it at the last couple of years. They had already limited it. I think some people think they have limited it more in the last two years or so but what has happened is the demand has gone waaay up. I know this because ADs are getting just as many watches as they always have (which wasn't enough to begin with and is way less than enough given the higher demand more recently). On your point about the grey market...I know all about it. You're focused on ADs selling to the grey market but you're ignoring how big of a supply source flippers are to that market. Tons of people are forming relationships with ADs just to get watches that they end up supplying the gray market. So it's not just one or the other. Some of it is ADs selling direct but you have to keep in mind that a good portion of it is actual customers (perceived as such by good ADs) that end up being flippers. None of us know how much is coming from bad ADs selling directly vs. people who pose as sincere customers that end up selling to the grey market...but I can tell you for certain that flippers are a material portion of it.
I’m sure you can buy it slightly used, close to new condition one for like $35,000 in about a year. Omega depreciates like there’s no tomorrow.
Ahhh not really. Look at ed whites, snoopy ,pre moons, etc
Excellent video again chaps well done
if the new canopus 321 speedy came in steel for a reasonable price or even in canopus gold for a price that made sense itd be my favorite. i love the broad arrow hands, love the 40mm size, love the dial, of course i love the 321 movement. its awesome.
3:02 THE 12:00 MARKER IS WONKY???
the top of the baton is to the left of the markers above it
and its at a wonky angle so the bottom of the marker is much closer to the left dot than the right...
how can you pay 80k and let something like that slide?
This was a fun conversation to listen to in the background.
I think Omega is catering to the watch *investors* with the 321 releases. When those watches rise in value at auctions, the other Omegas will become more valuable and thus more interesting for *collectors*. I wouldn’t be surprised to see more Omega boutiques open up with a reduction of ADs in order to exert better control on the prices of all their models (i.e. no more discounts). With ‘clienting’ becoming the norm where you can’t walk into a store and buy any Omega you want, they will become more desirable and respectable like Rolex.
What makes them respectable is that they aren’t like Omega
I'm right there with you man. My favorite kind of watch is the one that's "Normal, except..."
Not the regular sub, the LV. Not a default seamaster, the titanium one. Not a datejust, but a turn-o-graph. That sort of thing. The one that's just a little bit special and uncommon, but still looks totally default -unless you know-.
Looking for one like that for an exit watch. The canopus 3861, a white gold DD40, patek 7324g, 116619/116719, not too sure what it will be yet but those are at the head of the pack. They are all just a little special in their own ways.
The Mitsukoshi Speedmaster with the white panda dial is my favourite. Speedmasters and white dials just go together so well. I wish they had a regular priced one in the line-up.
Buy the after market dial and a normal Speedmaster and just fit the white dial on it :)
Hey! What did you do with the 90 at 10:24? :'D
I believe the engraving and Blue Sapphire eye is on the underside of the rear sapphire. So if you do shell out for it the stone will not be against your wrist. 😉
It's like listening to fancier, classier and dare I say almost smarter versions of Karl Pinkington talking to each other and I LOVE IT!
Why are people complaining about the price? It’s a Canopus gold, if you want to have it half the price buy the 2021 sedna or Canopus speedmaster. Or if you really upset about the price tag get a reduced or a 38. they leave us all with a ton of options. You don’t have that with a daytona.
the price of this 81.000eu watch is partly due to programs as this.
where the "flashyness" is more importent, then the function of it.
it has become more of a status symbol then love for the technical part of it.
in almost every watch channel, it's rolex this, omega that
this whole scene is blown out of proportion!
81k seems absolutely absurd for this watch but then I remembered that the street value for a platinum Daytona is 140k.
Love this kind of videos. The regular ones are breathtaking and gorgeous but this one is excellent while drinking a cup of coffee
I love my Speedmaster but no Speedy is worth $81,000 unless it was one that was actually worm on the moon.
The one that was worn on the moon better be the most expensive watch ever🐐🚀
@@hathaway.1166 Neil Armstrong's Speedmaster is on the Smithsonian museum. If Buzz Aldrin's Speedmaster shows up again, it will probably be the most expensive watch ever.
British March music at the beginning was 👌
😂 I love the dialogue lol. The details of this piece explained, and the overall entertainment. Thank you!
When I saw pictures of the new Speedmaster I was excited to go look on the Omega site. I did a double-take at the price, closed the page and got on with my life… Crazy
I want one. This is a level of manufacture and technology and craft/art that meets and exceeds most hi horology standards
Yup! I want this more than the nautilus!
You forgot to mention the weight. The distribution of the 230+gram makes it a very difficult wear - think solid gold Reverso Squadra.
Love the watch but it should have cost $32,100. And the print or etching on the rear crystal is hideous. If they made it in steel with all the same dial attributes etc and priced at ~$10-12k it would sell.
The regular Canopus Gold Speedmaster sells for $45k so no way would this sell for $32,100 nor would a steel version sell at $12k when they sell a less special calbre 321 in steel at $14k already. This features a hand made movement and a special dial so that has to attract a premium over the slightly less special versions. This watch along with the Aqua Terra Ultra light and the center Tourbillon are halo watches designed to shift Omega's perceived value amongst the wider public. This is shattering people's previous expectations regarding Omega. Deep down people that complain secretly want this so this watch has already accomplished its mission.
@@almac9203 Excellent points! I own several omegas and am just projecting what I want to pay. Lol
That engraving on the case back is the craziest thing. Can we find somebody who wants that? An interview with that person would be interesting.
3576.50 Speedmaster, the first one with a moonphase
I think Omega captures the buyers who have the real painting hidden in a safe place but shows the fake and Swatch lures a new trends and a younger audience. The MoonSwatch could be a possible future treasure to obtain.
In all fairness, the cost of materials and labor do increase over time. Taking the $81k Speedmaster out of the equation - a stainless steel Speedmaster is still reasonably attainable.
Becoming less so. I paid 4k for the basic hesalite in 2019. My first luxury watch. Not sure I would have stretched to 5+k in 2021 (even though I have since learned a lot more about watches and appreciate that the 3861 movement is a different beast from the 1861).
5:07 it is not a mistake. It is how "meter" is written in French marking(the accent) nuance in the way to pronounce the "e".
Tom is so over the dot over 90 he edited off the bezel at 10:22 haha
Great banter guys! I was giggling all the way through!
TBH after saw this model, I feel less excited for their new watch releasing in the future. Don’t get me wrong I love OMEGA, I do own SEAMASTER Pro 300m and I loved every minutes of wearing it.
But please OMEGA, stop milking SPEEDMASTER with repetitive old model inspired design already! 😫
They just made SPEEDMASTER less special.
Great episode
If you just want to see the movement properly you can get an unmolested steel one for only £11,950. And don't tell anyone, but you can get an original 1960s Seamaster chronograph with a 321 movement for less than £4k.
My dealer offered me this a few days ago. I love it, but $81K? No thank you.
The Calibre 321 is also available in a Steel Speedmaster, right? And it doesn't have the annoying engraving on the case back?
It's a tossup between the Meteorite "grey side of the moon" and the original "Snoopy". It's hard to beat having a real piece of outer space on your wrist but the original "Snoopy" Speedmaster is just as cool and commemorates the great accomplishments of NASA and the Space Program. Love them both!
Surprised that it wasn't mentioned how similar in appearance the Tudor 79350 is, the latter of course shedding a sub-dial in favour of a date and adding the convenience of the 70 hour power reserve from it's MT5813 movement... When you spend $81,000, is there less nattering on about the hour hand blocking the sub-dials?
Lovely dialogue 👍🏻 which watch prices going crazy, why not $81,000 ?
Wow that dot over 90 is just pure class from Omega! I tried on the new 3861 and had to squint to see it but wow it’s there alright, I just had to have one! So I did after they offered me 25% off!
Wow! What state did you get 25% off? I can’t get any discount in CA
As long as the sapphire crystal case back version stays around 7k I’m good. That’s my grail watch
I ❤️this channel. Andrew’s voice and accent is soooo asmr. Hello from Northern California😃❗️
The watch: hard pass. Tom’s one-liners: more please!
I own a few nice timepieces. I have an Omega Speedmaster from moon to Mars and the Omega Seamaster. I have a Brietling Super Avenger. My go to watch and the favorite is my Ulysses Nardin Maxi Marine. It is the most accurate and runs well within COSC specs or better. The power reserve is a great complication and the cyclops for the date is on the inside of the crystal so it does not protrude on the outside of thee crystal. The bigggest plus is the lume. I am able to read the time in the dark all night long. None of the other timepieces I have come close to this luminescence cabability. There are not a lot of reviews for this timepiece and I feel it is underrated. I would like to see you do a review of this timepiece and give your honest opinion. It is a well made good looking It is a good solid tool for time keeping.
Thank you for the great job you do for us afflicted with the title of a "WIS" wawatch idiot sevants.
Cheers
You would not need to replace the whole case back, the sapphire on the case back pops out easily, replace it with a plain sapphire of same dimensions, any good watchmaker would be able to do that within minuets. I always do that with my watches that come with horrible design flaws like this one!
I regularly spend over $80,000 on watches, and I always get new backs, dials, bevels and straps if I don't like them. I even got a new Patek box for my Rolex cos the box just looked cheap.
LOL! This makes the hand crank Moonie I bought at clearance at my local jeweler back in 2000 for $1400 look like a bargain.
81k!!!! What are they thinking. That’s more than Platona retail pricing (and I wouldn’t buy that either).
How good was that? Thank you, gentlemen. 👏 👏
There are so many speedmasters I have no idea which one is my favorite lol
One of your best videos ever! Incredible photography and analysis. Cheers 🍻
McDonald’s apple pie really gets me 😂
The frank and beans at the 12 o'clock position did distract me from the dot by the 90. Not sure what that's doing there, but I'm certain it will make Jeremy Clarkson want one.
I love how the suggestion of rotating the 90 on the bezel would lead to “all-out war.” 😆 No doubt!
Bake off reference with the firing of the enamel had me rolling! Hahaha.
I love the ‘First Omega in Space’ Speedmaster as it has fab history but compared to the other straight lug Speedmaster variants, is a massive bargain!
The metal talk was interesting but where would Seiko's "ever brilliant steel" fit into this? Since that has a paler hue, beautiful reflective properties and is much, much cheaper.
Favourite Speedmaster is the 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 edition, the grey and gold make it for me, and that footprint on the case back!
Congrats guys. Great humor, great interaction.
The depth on the dial is great, glad to see Omega copying Invicta’s white hot trendz
Great show!! Very entertaining! Keep them coming .Nice watch also.......
Omega is really trying to justify the 81K maybe they have for a few people and that is the point. To me these high-end watches are mechanical works of art, so the price reflects that approach to time keeping. Great Video thanks for not taking this too seriously.
To justify that jump they must include a moon buggy
😆 Hehe. Am I the only one who is thrilled by learning the name of the talking hands is Andrew...? 😃
Look at the whole of the tachymeter and you’ll see that the numbers mean little the lines and dots do.
Excellent show.
Regarding the watch, doesn’t the Ed White version with the 321 movement retail for about $15k? A $66k difference? (Retail)
It’s basically the same watch without all the fancy materials, arrow hands and without ruining the case back.
This is meant for a different target market. They would Love that it looks very similar (not same) but much more expensive... stealthy.
I wonder how many people bought the Ultraman one without realising
PS the new James Bond sea master is my favourite of that aesthetic
Love this video. My fav Speedmasters are those two at the end and the Tin Tin.
The background music reminds me of cocktail hour at my local hotel.
Took me a minute to see case back had an image on it. I thought it was a crazy new movement.
This was brilliant.
I don’t care if it were made from pure platinum, this price is absurd. As for my favorite Moonwatch it’s either Dark or Grey side of the Moon.
Platinum is cheaper than gold 😉
@@rashakor No its not. 😂
@@rashakor holy shit, I had no idea!!! still... the Rolex Day-Date can be had on the grey market for far less in full 18k gold. even if you're a bigger fan of Omega than Rolex, this price is nuts. but thanks for correcting me. I really thought platinum was still more expensive, lol.
1:21 Well you can’t say Omega didn’t listen
🙏👍🏻
This conversation is a bit Ricky Gervais-ish 😉
Isn't the MSRP of the Daytona Yellow or Rose Gold with metorite dial below 50k? How is this Speedmaster 30+k more?
I love you both choice of personal favorite speed masters ….. amazing taste !!!
Fantastic show, guys. Had me laughing out loud at several points (”dot over 90” discussion).
Omega did the exact same thing with the 70th anniversary Seamaster, all great until they ruined it by printing all over the caseback.
My favorite limited edition Speedy is the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary Moonshine. You did a great review on it awhile back.
After the UltraMan, I really like the Mark II Coaxial
The 21 handwound sapphire sandwich is my fav. The classic moonwatch style with some good improvements and I preffer to se that gorgeous movement.
I love the 321!!! but in steel. currently on the watch list at my local AD
$81K for that stealth mode speedmaster watch... not happening for me.
great vid!
the gold speedy is weird to me
its not a speedy pro, it's an homage to an older, less historically significant watch. the whole point of the speedy pro is that it's a descent of the famous 105.012 and we buy into a historical tool watch
having it in gold, kinda loses his toolness dont you think? and its also simply feels a different watch, an inspiration rather than a descent
if I'll buy a Speedmaster in gold (assuming I have this kind of money). I'd much rather it would be one of their modern designed and trchnologically superior ones like the 57 and the one with the caliber 3330
