I have made indie feature films and music videos for over 15 years (I started back when 4k was really only available to movie studios or to really big budget projects)- so many people forget about Lighting, shot composition, framing, using 2 cameras to cut seamlessly between angles in a scene etc etc that make their work "look cinematic".... BUT as I am in the market for some new gear, I have noticed that there are TONS of Red Komodos for sale on Ebay and other places and there are so many other Reds at very reduced prices for sale that it takes a long time to even look at them all....BUT at the same time, there are very very few people Re-selling their Canon Cinema Camera line cameras like the c70 (a direct Komodo competitor)or the c500 mkii or c300 mkiii etc.....makes me nervous about buying a Red rather than renting it for a project...

I agree 100% with everything you said. Reality is that both Canon and Sony are more bought by people who actually work in the industry and successfully so so for them reliability, ease of use and out of the box functionality takes priority. Red Komodo is incredibly overhyped and only select few who are descent at actual filmmaking and colour grading can take the full advantage of their R3Draw or the global shutter so naturally a bunch of them now selling off as the Sony FX3 is slowly become another “Komodo” BUT with much easier learning curve and much more useable out of the box package, better specs on paper and so on so noobies get better results or at least dont break their backs doing so haha. I would be careful buying Komodos used from private sellers a bunch of scams I hear from RED forums. Whats your budget and lens choices?

Exactly! Spot on! And I am considering the Canon C70 because I have so many great Canon lenses I have bought over the years...Im trying to keep the budget under $6000 since this camera will be my everyday workhorse and an "A-Cam" for TV interview type projects and and it would serve as a "B-Cam" for any features I do or narrative TV shows where I would rent an "A-Cam" that I want to work with but not spend a fortune buying LOL@@CINENIMUS

To be fair, Canon didn't really sell as many of those cameras (certainly not compared to Sony), which is a major factor in explaining why there are not so many modern Canon cinema cameras for sale secondhand now

As I've gotten more experience shooting film/digital, learning more about color grading, getting more shoots under my belt as a DP/Gaffer, watching movies, etc
I've learned to accept letting the shadows crush or the highlights blow
You don't always need maximum dynamic range, sure it can be nice and has a certain aesthetic to it but not everything needs it
Personally I like working within a more limited dynamic range, forcing myself to think more about the final product by taking into account the dynamic range of the scene
Kind of like practicing with film cameras, you have to be more analytical
I keep meeting newer shooters with these brand new red cameras with crazy specs but they lack a lot of fundamental knowledge
Not saying all of them are like that, but I feel like jumping in with a camera that is too good of specs holds your hand too much
I just helped color grade a project shot on a komodo/bmp6k and the operator didn't know how to use them properly

i agree. generally i think high dynamic range images are quite boring. give me high contrast! crush the shadows and blow out the highlights.

Very true but I bought a expensive camera because I write films and in all reality Sony have nothing on Red Raw…by the time I master my RED camera…I was doin commercials and was way past my peers…so it matters cause I dont like that dark look Sony has

I have two Samsung NX1's and have been shooting for the last 10 years. The videos are fabulous... except... the highlights blow out very fast... and there are severe banding in gradated areas because of the 8bit video codec. I love the Nx1's... but I have hit a technical wall, and there's nothing I can do to overcome it. It is time to get cameras with better codecs.

Literally any camera in the market that can shoot 10bit 422 will do just fine

All the better for keen eyed creatives looking for the quality it can give for a better price and squeezzeee every last drop from it. There will always be a new next best thing. Komodo x? I will take the Komodo! 🎉😂. When batches of projects are completed, cameras like this always pop up.
