Join me as we visit the communist era market, in Varna Bulgaria, and take a deep dive into the local culture.
Named after the Soviet Framing Cooperatives, the Kolkhozen Market (kolkhozen pazar) in Varna is the ideal place to meet local people and get a vivid insight about life in Varna Bulgaria.
We chat with people, eat the local foods, drink the national drink (Rakia), and get a taste of Armenian food and amazing Armenian Cognac.
    Lets discover extraordinary Varna together!
If you enjoy adventure videos from the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, then grab your vodka, some zakusky and join me as we explore the Truly extraordinary Kolkhoz Market in the city of Varna in Bulgaria.

as a bulgarian i want to clear out one thing for people who do not know bulgarian: the tone people talk with most of the times may sound aggressive but i assure you it is not, we are loud and we seem aggressive but as the lady in the spice shop showed - she was just happy, she teased him at the beginning but she is genuinely kind to him

Feta, literally translated from Greek means white cheese (Bulgarian) Because during communism we could not export it to the west
we sell it to the Greeks, they change the name and sell it as their product. They never had real cheese but because of its great publicity in England, they now think of it as Greek.

In the late 1950s and 1960s in the UK we could buy canned Bulgarian stuffed peppers. They were one of the cheapest canned products but very delicious. They disappeared from the shelves in the 1970s.

You left me speechless my friend. You are so open for our culture. I have to say, you own a good knowledge. In the previous video i was curious why you sounding Russian when you pronounce some Bulgarian words. That's because you know Russian lang. All Russian people have your accent when they speak Bulgarian. Great Videos. You make me laugh a lot, i watching you with smile on my face, you make me happy mate. Next month i will drive to Bulgaria from Birmingham. And your video just give me happiness to go home again, instead of visit any orher country. Next time when you visit Bulgaria, try to eat "ovcharska salata" shepherd salad. Very nice again with Rakia. Have many brands in the shop's. The homemade is the best and real, but only you catch good one, probably this one from the market which you share with the experts isn't that good for drink. Like what they told you it's fresh. Definitely not good for drinking, it's too early. Need to be old more than year minimum, then you can feel the grape taste or plum taste depend of the type you bought..

Hi there, I'm Yani, nice to meet you whit greetings from sunny Margate! We have a lot of English villages where more and more British are settling with the idea of spending their old days in peace. One of them is the village of "Palamaritsa" , where so far the English, Irish and French who live there together 😃, are more than the local population in the village!
By the way I just subscribed your channel and I do like your videos and i can say that exploring Bulgaria is something which gonna blow your mind and Yess you gonna feel it through your soul fella. Keep on the good work! Thumbs up! 👍🏼👌🏼I'm originally from Varna, Bulgaria, living in UK for the last 8 years of my life, anything I can help whit, I'm on 24/7 😉
*Only one thing I don't agree is when in one of your videos you said that the Bulgarian cheese is type of "feta" cheese...the truth is that the Greeks stole and patented the cheese before us by calling it "feta". However, the bacteria needed to make the cheese and yogurt unique grow in Bulgaria and this gives the original taste to both the cheese and the yogurt, which you can find only in Bulgaria! That's why the yogurt called "kiselo mlyako" is something which you can only taste in the country, It is recommended to be home made to feel the real taste of it!
      Good luck, Justin! 😉👌🏼

To my surprise after a century and a half of nation building the Bulgarian cuisine remains dominated by Turkish food names. In fact there’s food in Bulgaria with Turkish names which people from Turkey would not be familiar with. For example, “Sızdırma”. A lot of food names ending with “ma” or “me” are Turkish including the better known “Pastrami” which comes from “Bastırma” (pressed) and “Shawarma” which comes from “Çevirme” (turned - alternate word for “Dömer”). “Kapama” (closed) “Bazlama”, Gözleme” and the one mentioned in the clip for the Russian “Palachinki”, “Katma” (added) are also Turkish names but Bulgarians seem to have confused that one with another Turkish food name for a kind of omelette. The correct name for what Bulgarians call “Katma” is “Akıtma” (spilled) as it is made by spilling the mix onto the pan. My mom used to make good “akıtmas” (акътма). “Kaçamak” is another breakfast item worth mentioning. And let us not forget the “Şkembe” and “Tarana” çorbas (soups).

Great videos - big fan of yours.
Man, you need to be watchful with all these homemade Rakias. Very wisely you gave it away to the professionals 😆. BTW прясна or fresh means - run away as fast as you can its full of methanol.
Some folks don't know how (or simply skip) to treat excessive methanol during the distillation.
Best to be cautious and take as little of the substance as possible. Or test it by taking a small sample of the alcohol and light it on fire - if you see a yellow fire instead of a blue flame, the sample contains methanol.
Justin, if you ever come to Bulgaria again, I recommend you to visit the Rhodope mountains. There you can find a lot of kind people, landmarks, beautiful nature and colorite culture. There are plenty of local delicious food and recepies you would enjoy I believe.

"Shanerna sol" for 4 leva, meanwhile below the package it says 2 leva. Sums up how Bulgarian salesmen try to take more money from foreigners and as Bulgarian I'm ashamed of this. Almost every salesman from the coast is doing this to the tourists, but in reality everyone should be honest and that's how you get more tourists and people having trust in you. Woman with the "turshia" and the other one with "rakia" did well.
