I've lived in Slovakia and can say that I agree that per person the basket in the market is quite expensive.
However, I also find Slovak food disgusting and of very poor quality. This regards the sausages (parky) but also the restaurants and service. I consider them worse than hours.
Kapusta so knedl'a / Brynzove halusky are quite heavy together with vyprazeny syr. Polievka isn't like our soups, filled with spices.
Maybe mad'arsky gulas or viedensky schnitzel can be considered decent, but most of the other restaurant dishes are... not great.
And Tesco in my town Trnava used to be half-empty most of the time.

Not really. Most (if not all) dealers there buy from the veggie market / exchange (борса), which in their turn buys the produce (usually from producers directly, but also has foreign produce). It's the same thing as the supermarket, but without the well organized global supply chain (which only makes you think how much the big chains are actually pocketing). If you would want to buy directly from the producer go through villages and you still have to be careful there, as it might again not be their own produce.

  • @bencleaver96

I think it definitely depends where you shop, my English parents get most ingredients for meals from the village shops where they live, which sells for next to nothing, its when they go into Varna for their big shop the price racks up, the local villagers say they’re feeling the pinch though. I noticed an increase the last couple of years i’ve been out there to visit. Great video again keep up the great work!

Prices since the war RU-UA broke out increased dramatically 30-50% on average and in some cases 100%. There are many comparison materials from Bulgarians living in DE, UK and other countries in EU and the prices almost on anything either cost the same or they are more expensive. The government is making some cheap attempts to fight inflation with some goods with lower prices, but from different reports it seems they are none existing, so its only on paper. And no one admits it, but the prices continue to grow with each month...

Agriculture was mostly destroyed in the 90s. Bulgaria used to export food to the former Communist countries in Eastern Europe, now it imports food. Simple things like butter are twice as expensive compared to London. The quality is dubious too - the feta doesn’t contain cow milk, forget about sheep milk, but replacement ingredients. Same with the meat products. Tons of businesses make these, but there is no supervision, so they put whatever they can find. They are not happy with 20-30% profit, they want 200-300% profit, so the owner can buy a more expensive car than his neighbour. That’s the mentality. As a Bulgarian, I know what I am talking about.

I'm Bulgarian and I have no idea why the prices hiked so much. People that have family abroad have told me that food prices in Germany are lower than in Bulgaria which is astonishing to me, considering that we import half of the products seen in our shops. It's mostly false inflation in my opinion. If you've ever travelled Bulgaria by road or train you'd have seen the vast fields of sunflowers. Most if not all sunflower oil brands on the market are Bulgarian. You CANNOT tell me that such a massive reserve of sunflower seed suffered inflation to the point of hiking the price from 1,70лв to 5,00лв - 7,00лв in the worst days of the inflation. It's not like the sun and the rain got inflated, too. It's mostly greed.
There used to be a local market near where I live that had consistently low prices even amidst the inflation. Their produce went up 0,30лв maximum. Unfortunately they were shut down to build better market stalls and still haven't opened which lead me to start hunting for low prices. Some of the price difference is insane. I've seen tomatoes for 2,60 on one stall and similar tomatoes for 5,60 on the one next to them. It's a free for all.

That being said by the time Bulgaria distributes 1 shipment, Romania would have completed 3. And things are quite different between imported and local goods.

The beer had lower VAT before, we have 20% VAT tax for all products, but for beer and wine was 9% instead, and 2 years ago they returned it back to 20% tax, so that made the beer little more expensive, plus the inflation.
