Well considering the awful 🇺🇸 government had a draft for that war (a practice worse than slavery). I find it hard to criticise Walter for taking pride in what he considers service to his country. As for that possibly correlating to hatred for "chinaman" I find the argument to be speculative at best but more likely slanderous in reality. Plus he offered reverence for his foe when he says the man in the black pajamas line.

What wouldn't be it, then? "Walter is my favorite thing in the universe. Better than food, better than oxygen, better then being alive, better than loving and being loved." That better?
Walter is the yang to The Dude's yin. To be honest, I always found him more relatable than The Dude. He's filled with inner turmoil and maniacal PASSION! Granted, that's partially due to PTSD, but that just exacerbates what's already inside him.
Well according to Roger Ebert he said that Charlize Theron’s performance was Aileen Wuornos as he said “ The greatest performance in the history of cinema “
My favorite Walter scene was Donny’s funeral and ash spreading. After Walter’s eulogy with “what your dieing wishes may well have been” he let the wind carry them all over the Dude’s face. Dude...”everything is a travesty with you!”
He’s a True Believer in Rules and politically correct when he is and when not he ain’t and heavily experienced in the bad that can, will, does happen when ya FUCK A STRANGER IN HIS OR HER ASS.
Even though I never served in the military, have a general dislike of war, I somehow relate very strongly with Walter's batshit crazy veteran personality. It's the confidence I'm missing.
This is why Walter's the best character in the Big Lebowski considering that he's a crazy vietnam war veteran who doesn't take shit from anyone or anything not even nihilists. Add to the fact that he was portrayed by John Goodman makes him even more iconic and unforgettable.
Walter Sobchak do you have any advice for the generation of late that has a hard time doing laundry, or driving a car that don’t park itself or for the troubled time our country finds itself struggling with?? Also do you know that Jesus is out of the penitentiary and said you and your “rules” are full of Patriotic Piss that’s lukewarm from the lack of a spine in more than 7 out of 10 citizenships and how the immigrants are the soul, worn and torn leather feeling hands, breath of breaking wind and kerosene and when the next big ass spring storm tears up roofs with powerful winds it’ll be his PuertoRican brother n law that fixes it along with the gutter and of a bridge that burns more and more daily because of racial tensions. Help us Walter America needs more men like yourself good sir.
I grew up on a street that had a Walter Sobchak type character, he served in ‘Nam as a Marine as a infantryman for a few months before he was shot in the jaw and sent home. You never would’ve never known it by looking at him though, whoever was his surgeon/s did a bang up job of patching his face back together. Anyways it was without question the most defining moment in his life, the man is without question proud of his service as a Marine and that he severed his country in Vietnam.
Walter is like the personification of America . He´s loud, embarassing, overconfident to a fault, sticks to what he believes in no matter how much it inconveniences people, and lets his passion take precedence over judgement. He annoys you and you hate him even though he´s your friend. But when shit gets real, you´re glad he´s on your side, ready to fight just for the principle of the damn thing.

One of the best crafted script about such a basic plot/story line ever! The comedy comes from character and timing not situation… the situations can be so basic and yet the Brothers direct the the dialogue so well that laughter is inevitable. It also helps that it was some of the best Casting of a film ever! Really is a perfect movie.
