  • In this video, I do an in depth cost analysis down to the dollar, of how much it cost me to buy a boat (Twin Diesel Trawler), with no prior experience, and to run this boat down the East Coast USA from Portland Maine, to Miami, Florida! If you are new to the channel, check out my boat trip series, of the entire trip down the coast!

@@earlwright9715 It was a valid question. Had he not had an auto shop, would he have really taken on the engine oriented tasks??? I doubt it. The skills he learned from tearing cars apart were directly applicable to getting his boat handled.

@christerman if he owned an auto shop on his own money he wouldn't have paid 25k for a boat that's worth 20k if it doesn't need 12k in repairs. Dudes a liar, I don't understand what I did to the youtube algorithm to keep getting sent this garbage

I loved watching this whole trip. You and Adam will never forget it. I felt sad watching him leave. Here is what I liked so much:
    1. Your positive attitude. No complaining and whining and being dramatic. Just two real guys having fun. It was funny when you were in the Chesapeake bay you said something like " it sucks here" But you quickly caught yourself being negative and said " just kidding , its nice" LOL
    2. At the end of the day you would show on a map how you went.
    3. The drone footage was a nice touch and added to your production.
    4. You talked like a normal person, not a put on phoney personality
    5. Even though your a sailor, you didnt talk like one. Meaning you didnt curse the whole time. I appreciate that . I could watch this with my family.
Thanks for being transparent with the costs , it answered a lot of my questions
And BTW it was very obvious to me from the beginning that you are a hard worker and not getting handouts. Great Job!!

I really liked the video I'm impressed that a 23 year old young man has his head on straight like you do. I'm 61 years old and finally sold our last boat it was a 36 ft trawler with twin Perkins diesels. They are very good on fuel and very sea worthy vessels. Before that one we had a 31 ft uniflite with twin Chrysler 318 small blocks gas engines that really sucked up the fuel I was glad to get diesels The fuel economy is way better and the engines last much much longer. Good job I'm impressed with this video.

That is still a HUGE amount of money to just buy a boat and get to Florida.
Last year I bought a 34' Steel hull sailboat for $12,000. Put $5000 and 4 weeks labor into a refit.
Sailed from Lake Ontario thru the Erie Canal system to NYC. Cost $450 to take mast down and $400 to put back up. Spent $115 in diesel thru canal system at avg 4-5 knots. Then from NYC to Key Largo spent $210 in diesel when using the ICW in bad weather. Slept on board all but 3 nights, $380 in hotel rooms that had Jacuzzi tubs to " feel good "
Spent $400 in groceries and $500 in beer for 2ppl. $120 in dog food. Moored 7 times at marinas to take advantage of electricity to do maintenance
$400 there. Ate a ton of fish including 1 Bluefin Tuna that weighed in at 91 pounds. Shared that meat with a handful of cruisers in South Carolina who will never forget me. So ya sailing vessels are much cheaper to operate and much more fun on the open water AND can handle much bigger waves/weather. IF anyone does buy a Trawler, and yes I love me a Trawler, but, it's gotta be Diesel and full keel type to handle offshore weather. I plan on retiring into a 45-55ft Trawler when to old to sail.
Well thats my 2 cents on a Cruiser Lifestyle. But i'd say BOTH our points are similar ,,,, ANYONE can do this and live the lifestyle. Then learn to create TH-cam videos and make an extra couple grand a month to keep on going into the Wild Blue Yonder !!
Peace Out & Fair Winds to All !!!

Gus you did it with class man! You kept it real no BS, and had fun doing it. I applauded you ! I'm thinking of doing that, once I get my budget in order, and try to do the same, I've always seen, and enjoy being out on a boat, my dream is to go out an fish for tuna, and support myself in just fishing an selling tuna, maybe some salmon as well, but would have to get the boat first and foremost! And of course enjoy life out there as well. I know it's not going to be easy, but like you said, just do it, at least either you make it or not , at least you achieve the goal you always wanted to do! And with that said, good luck and God Bless you threw all of your journey's, you are an inspiration for most of us, with a dream come true. Godspeed!

Gus! Good job young man!! This is a dream of mine as well. Thanks for sharing your experience. Skills will set you apart from the norms. You are in another world! I am very happy for you! Keep floating! Enjoy your boat! Nothing makes a man feel like a man more than, not just building, but taking something from its death bed and bringing it back. Short horror story: About 15 years ago my wife seen some ladies sunbathing on a boat and said I want to do that. So, I purchased a Chrysler 22 sailboat. Like yours it needed love. I worked hard on it. Brought it back. Rebuilt the trailer too. Bought a 10 foot inflatable island for sunbathing to go with it. I was on my very last step. Mounting the outboard engine mount. My wife calls and says,"I'm not getting on that boat." She said I spent too much time on the boat, even though I was doing it for her as well. It never made it to the water. I walked away. Broke my heart. It's been sitting ever since. I recently gave it to my son in hopes he will bring it back one more time. Now she wants a motor boat. Here we go again!! LOL!! To pull her back in, I just watch boating videos when she is around....LIKE YOURS!! SO thank you my friend! You helped!! Hopes to see you on the water!!

It also depends on what speed you want to push the yacht If you keep it around 6 to 8 knobs you'll probably get a very good economical fuel burn if you floor the throttles or or push it to 10 to 12 knots you'll probably get me refilling every 2 days

Another huge variable is boat size, speed will effect MPG a lot but a boat half the size going twice as fast is usually gonna get a similar mpg.

I agree but the poor slob would be a very capable marine engineer who charges a fortune for their skill. If you are not a check book captain it takes real graft and time and personal skill to do anything. Even cleaning of a boat this size could take days or weeks. 👍👍👍

Great job. Don’t ever listen to those who make stupid comments about how you were able to pay for this. Most who speak like that have no idea and just want to try and take away your credit for working hard and accomplishing something few of them will ever be able too. I don’t know what your prior boating experience was but you did this with a level head by teaching yourself how to do so much of the maintenance. You also paid attention to the important details when prepping your boat for this long journey. I totally admire that you had a vision and a goal and went after it. You have a adventure that will last a lifetime. I’ve been boating and a live aboard for over 30 years and love it. I hope your passion is only greater for boating adventures now that you’ve done this. Bahamas trip or even the Great Loop may be a interest to you in the future. You actually have a great boat for long range cruising. I really enjoy your videos. Hope to see more adventures in the future. Wish you fair weather and calm seas !

Dude! That was epic!! That was the best cost breakdown I've ever seen on youtube! That idiot facebooker trawler self grandizing, narcissist that kicked you out of his group was an idiot! This alone is great content for any trawling or boating group on facebook or anywhere else! It could be so easy to hate on you because of jealousy but you have been honorable, respectful and informative as well as entertaining, so good on you! You are wise beyond your years. Thanks for taking us along on this great journey!! Oh yeah, one more thing, your beer budget, we need to work on that! 🤣🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍻

I was thinking the same thing concerning that beer budget....That needs a larger slice of the pie...heh perhaps slow to 7 knots. 🙂

Being that I have owned boats up to 26ft in the CA Delta I would agree with you on all your figures. Very realistic. Great video's Gus.
