It is really a great pleasure and reward to know that these documents can be truly appreciate par conaisseurs and passionate opera lovers like you ... it was always my aim and it is definitely worth the work it took (altough this video was not taped by myself, but by an american guy I met in NY late 90's ... and knowing how difficult were his conditions, I can only praise his great work for doing this recording in such stressful conditions ....

Humanity needs Art and these rare expressions needs to be explored and appreciated by as many as possible. When I think of all those self-proclaimed 'specialists' asserting sententiously that Renée was a cold blood kind of singer, only 'listening to her voice' and trying only to make beautiful sounds ... I wish they could see this kind of material ... ;)
The only difference I pick up in this scene, from when I saw it, I think that Mephistopheles had some kind of gargoyle costume. I was sitting in an upper lever and couldn't see it that clearly. By any chance, were you able video the very ending of the opera? I heard on the radio broadcast what it was supposed to look like, but the curtain draping in the proscenium blocked my view. I wish SO MUCH I had seen that detail. Thank you again. I cannot tell you how much this means to me, to see this incredible production again in your videos!
A beautiful reminder what a great singer Renee Fleming was at the beginning of her career, before she got a superstar. Beautiful voice comebindes with a solid technique and an honest and direct interpretation. Though she kept her voice and technique throughout, she became so mannered with all the scooping and sliding, combined with an artificial attitude - at least for me - she became unlistenable for me.

I didn't know she used to have good chest notes and a solid middle voice. It's both a surprise and kinda sad hope her example inspire other singers
