I will note that Samuel isn’t exactly young in this recording. The recording takes place in 1997, and Sam was born in 1942, making him 54 - 55. But otherwise thank you so much for this gift. Ramey is my No. 1 absolutely favourite singer in Opera (well I can’t decide if I like him or Corelli more but whatever), extraordinary voice and god.. such a handsome dude. (And that’s coming from another male!) Bravo!
The BEST I think I have heard Mr. Ramey. I saw both Richard Leach and Samuel Ramey sing Faust at the Met in 1991. I believe it is the same production with a couple of slight modifications. I LOVED this production. It was dark and grim but SO provocative and engaging. I love their costumes. I remember in particular how handsome Richard Leach was in his costume, in particular when he became young. How I wish I could see it again. Thank you for posting this! Please post more of this performance, if possible!
The most notable difference between the scene here and as I remember it, was that the audience could also see Faust's vision of Marguerite. She was kind of slowly turning in a revealing way, like a slow ballet movement. It was enchanting. Maybe the same thing occurred here, just not in the film, which is fine! It is wonderful either way!
I don't think Ramey used mics in Paris or anywhere else ... I suspect that some performances wer sort of amplified in Bastille. But if it is true, it did not last for long. And for sure it was amplified (in a very subtle way) for everyone on stage, I don't believe that any singer ever has a 'private mic' anyway; So if amplification may have occured at some point for some performances, it was certainly a 'global' amplification and not done with individual mics. But I ear Ramey many times in other theaterss, and for sure he did NOT need amplifications or mics no project fiercely his voice in the entire theater !
Samuel as always the Best of the Best ❤

His voice sliced through the house. It was incredible.
