Everything this woman possessed was because of three things: intelligence, sheer will power, and work ethic. She’s not a natural singer, and she learned everything. I have a lot of respect for her work, craft, and contribution to opera. BRAVISSIMA MADAME ZAJICK!
Un de mes plus beaux souvenirs à la Bastille ! Shicoff Ramey Vaness Zajick… deux soirées de dinguerie absolue ! J’y étais à la première et à la dernière 🎉! Inoubliable.
As Fleming said when she sang Herodiade with Zajick - she is a human trumpet! zajick was not really an actor, or very interesting interpreter, but a brilliant technique and thrilling sound.
I recall an interview with Zajick and Giulietta Simionato. The older mezzo watched a tape and exclaimed, “Oh my God, how did you do that?! You are the best mezzo for Verdi.” I agree, and I saw Zajick many times onstage. She was a far greater artist than just “loud.” Yes, Verrett and Troyanos were also wonderful in this role. I also saw Horne, who was brilliant in so many roles……but not this one.
Is it Vaness in Élisabeth? She was handsome in this Bastille production. Zajick is strong and impressed friends of mine in the audience. I don't like her medium vowels, neutralised, and her sort of rigid posture, she is neither sensual nor really romantic or passionate. It is pure strong straight sound. I prefer great Ladies like Verrett, Troyanos, Bumbry. Or Resnik.
the biggest human vocal i have ever heard. the MET Aida in 2009. She literally drowned the whole cast in the triumphant scene. and drowned violeta urmana in the duet. 😂 poor urmana, with her shaky and dry voice like a victim.
At some point I might share a wonderful Aida with her and Alessandra Marc in Verona ... the pair was amazing ... also the size and their appetite for pizza :)))
Zajick may not fit the mold of what some consider “beautiful”, ever subjective as that is. But would that there was someone, only one, the world over like her today. Today one has to be content with the likes of Garanča, at best and at most a lyric mezzo wanting to pass for something else she is not. And the hope that was Rachvelishvili appears to be in trouble already.
She had a great top and a great bottom. She seems to have done unorthodox things with her tongue though, so the vowels in her middle voice are never really right.
@@ER1CwC I agree with this. Overall I don't think she really deserves some of the hate that she's getting on TH-cam at points. Some of the same issues she had were common with mezzos of a couple generations prior... people simply do not mention it (that being said I do think she was a natural dramatic soprano rather than a mezzo but I don't really care much about the difference).

Fiercely beautiful
Nice wording :) And the experience in the theater was spectacular ;)

Very beautiful, full of power, like a soprano and a mezzo combined 🙏

IN the house it was a thrilling experience :)
Une des plus grandes voix que j’ai entendue……. Un fleuve vocal.
Exceptionnelle en Eboli et Azucena à Bastille, Amneris à Orange,…………..
Grazie mille
Un uragano di voce ❤
Yes the experience live in the theater was shoking ... :)
Bravissima
One of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard. Recordings do nothing for her voice… it sounds completely different in the theater.

I saw Horne quite late on stage but I don't think that the rather small size of her voice could confront such a dramatic score ...
Simionato was no slouch herself in this role.
If you heard Cossotto in the 60’s - as I did many times - Z.’s strange vocalism is not so convincing. Loud I’ll give her, but not much more.
To reduce Zajick's incredible vocal technique and voice in general to just "loud", I find it incredibly strange.

Yes it is Vaness ... not in great vocal shape this specific evening (I shared the first act duet with Filip you can find it on this chanel)
Three registers - the low and high are the best.

Loud does not equal great.
Great is subjective loud is objective ... IMO she was great too .. :)
You didn't like her ? why ? did you see her live ?
@ Yes ,it’s loud, but Verdi also requires vocal beauty. The latter has always been absent in her voice.

Modified vowels, relatively weak middle and later a horrible teacher…
It’s the modified vowels that always bothered me, from her first Azucena on, the voice no doubt was massive, I don’t think the midfle is weak
