I agree 100 percent with you on the 36mm. It is the most aesthetically pleasing size and shape. The larger ones expand in diameter but don't proportionally increase lug length ruining the shape.
Agreed, I think the 40 mm day date looks brash and a bit too "in your face". There is just something about the look that doesn't agree with me. And the 41mm they produced for a couple years was a joke.
In my opinion, you made the perfect choice going with your yellow gold Day-Date. It is such a refined, classic, and beautiful design. My grandfather wore a yellow gold Day-Date everyday for most of his life so it is safe to say that I have a soft spot for it. Regardless, the platinum model is stunning. It perfectly combines sophistication and luxury, while maintaining an understated presence that is graceful and humble. Thank you, TGV.
Top notch production of these videos. I lost my father a few months ago and was given this watch with a Rhodium Roman dial. At the time, I knew nothing about watches, mechanical or otherwise. TGV, your videos really helped educate me on what a wonderful gift I was given. Thank you!
I bought myself a Submariner in 08, but i wear my dad's gold 79 Oyster no day/date every day. i love the vintage look with the patina and miner scratches. everyone asks to buy it. I'll never sell it. thanks for the video, sir. i enjoyed it.
Your perspective on the gold vs platinum and how they change your feeling about the wearability of the watch changing between US and UK is spot on! Perfect explanation.
The 36mm is simply one of the most iconic watches of all time. I wear a 45 year old 18K with the bark finish they did for a number of years. The patina (never polished) is phenomenal. Aside from the obvious wide recognition, when I am around some very wealthy watch people, regardless of the Patek, Richard Mille, Audemars, etc they are wearing, this watch always gets a knowing nod of approval. I have a 45 year old steel and gold Datejust and I will leave it to my sons to figure out who will get which one when I am ready to give them up.
I think your analysis of the Platinum Day-Date was spot on. It flies under the radar. Only the most discerning watch enthusiasts recognize it for what it is.
What a bang up job you have done with this review. This is my favorite watch of all time and I was fortunate enough to acquire one. I have had a date just, a Submariner blue dial 2 tone, and still have a GMT BLNR. As many times as I have liked and worn these other watches, I always come back to the 118206. And I adore the way someones face changes when they realize what it is....even watch dealors and watchmakers. They always want ti hold it and Im happy to oblige a fellow enthusiast. Again, congrats on a brilliant review.
What I love about the 118206 is that when on the wrist it is satisfying the owner with its Heft and reminding you its there and gives you a warm glow..whilst 99.9% of watch people have No idea what it is..The Gold DayDate is the complete opposite it lets both the Owner and Others know im here I command respect and craves to be seen but can certainly draw the wrong attention..Both stunning pieces but very much in their own way.
I agree. And I would never mention to my son that I’m wearing a platinum watch until some day I pass this beauty to him. I want him to remember me as the most simple and down to earth guy. And this is exactly what this watch is about
I have worn my gold President daily since 1984. I just took delivery on my 118206 last weekend. Only another watch enthusiast will notice what I am wearing. It is so much more understated that the gold day date. Thank you for your reviews.
I have 118206 the exact same watch. It was bought brand new at AD years ago and it was passed down to me from my dad. I really like this video because it makes me appreciate how special these watches really are.
I have the platinum DD36 heft is always there, and I did wear it as my only watch for 3 years no problems. It is cool and understated and amazing when the light catches it, a warm sparkly shine. Certainly brighter than WG.
36mm is without doubt the 'quintessential' Day Date. That platinum/glacier dial is the pinnacle of the Oyster Perpetual that started with the 1931 'bubble back' went on to Date Just, then to Day Date and now the most precious of precious metals finally comepletes the evolution. No Rolex watch will ever be any better than that!
Great video! Love the Day-Date in white gold or platinum for the very reason that it is more understated, like you said, than yellow gold. Yellow gold does draw more attention, but white gold and platinum less so, and you make a great point of it being less blingy and more something you can appreciate for yourself. As for a Do-it-All Rolex? My all-stainless Datejust does the trick for me- domed bezel, black dial with lume stick markers, Jubilee band with hidden clasp-it's all the watch I want or need.
Both of those Day-Date watches are really nice but I prefer yours. One definitely has to be into watches made from gold or platinum for reasons other than the value of the metal though. I'd love a gold Day-Date but 3 or 4 times the cost of a Datejust is difficult for me to overcome when the value of the gold is about $3,500. I know there are other factors and they hold their value well though.
i like just yellow gold watches. its looks more luxury and expensive. steel is for my working class and not luxury. platinum and white gold looks like steel, so its looks like working class
The Day-Date really is the perfect watch for every occasion. I’ve been very happy with my M-serial 118238. Champagne dial of course. I’m pretty conservative on this front. And German date wheel since it was a gift from my father who is German. I do tend to wear my MK1 BLNR much more often because I don’t want my friends and family to think that I’m snobbish. Unfortunately solid yellow gold can give a bad impression in the aftermath of 2008. Now that doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t wear what you love just because of what others think! Also for platinum I prefer the larger DD40. I don’t like how smooth bezels look on 36mm watches. On the DD40 and DD2 it looks perfect imo.
Great video and 100% agree. This has been my grail for a long time. Understated and classy. I shy away from gold watches because I feel it is too pretentious. It’s good to hear you don’t notice the weight. That have been one of the items that gave me pause.
I'm not a big fan of Rolex to be honest. But hearing the passion in your description and seeing the smile you wear just walking around the streets wearing the day date let's me appreciate it as well.
Crazy when I first watched this when it came out I was thinking I’d have to wait a long time to get a day date. I just got my 1803 non quickset white gold diamond dial, bezel an lugs yesterday for a insane price from a old lady who’s husband just passed. I’m in love and can’t believe I have one on my wrist at 25 years old. Now it’s time for a Daytona ! Lol
That is a beauty. Perhaps I'm one of the few who really covets the Day Date 40 in Everose Gold and an Olive Green Dial? I find that piece to be among the most stunning of combinations.
My "must have?" The time to let those who are most important to me that I love them. A platinum day date would allow me to keep track of that time with understated elegance. But by owning that watch, they'd have to spring for dinner.
Hey Tristano, I just want say that I am flabbergasted by my new 30 Atmos no: 028. I was very close to buying from the new batch of Baltic Aquascaphes but for a few hundred more, the 30 Atmos just tics so many more boxes. My grail 50 Fathoms model is not only too expensive but also too big for me to even wear. The 30 Atmos completely makes it obsolete to me anyway, well done! I love how it's a modern retro without being a rip off and in addition absolutely exquisitely executed. Fabulously classy aesthetics while still basically a tool watch. I can't stop wearing it, it is not only exceptionally beautiful but also exactly everything I have been wishing for. I couldn't care less about some snobs' ignorance of Squale. While I wasn't into the brand before finding this, it is absolutely perfect. It also suits me perfectly to support your efforts on this and everything you stand for. It's always inspiring to get your technical and historical insights along with the ever positive and no nonsense vibe. A true pleasure. An episode idea: Please try to get an interview with neo-classical superhero guitar player; Yngwie Malmsteen about his extraordinary vintage Rolex collection. I am certain he would love to do it. Cheers Mate, Poul
Thank you so much for sharing that Poul, You have no idea how much that makes me happy to hear. I hope you keep enjoying it, number 28!!!! Fantastic. Onwards and upwards, Best regards, TGV
Correction: the 18238 double quick-set ran from 1988 to 1999, I own one ☝🏻🥴. I do prefer these over the later 36mm references as the lugs are mote dramatic improving the overall dimensions harkening back to the Golden Ratio, although I don’t know it actually conforms to those measurements………
A fantastic, learned, and most insightful review of this iconic watch, which explains its tangible and intangible allure. Thank you very much TGV. You have answered the question of the reasons this watch is so attractive in so many ways. You did not make a mistake in purchasing the gold reference. You may have, however, found a new grail.
Go for it TGV - and keep also the one made out of gold - in my opinion both watches appear quite different though they share the same family tree - and you never can go wrong with another Rolex
I've had the pleasure of handling a platinum Rolex several months back. Like you, it was the weight that made such an impression on me. While I didn't get to wear it for even a moment (it was owned by someone else) I can imagine that it would feel quite amazing on the wrist. (That said, I have my Dad's Datejust - steel and gold, 36mm - and it just disappears when I wear it, it's so comfy and light) Perhaps you should consider selling your gold DayDate and putting the funds toward that platinum model. Oh, and that ice blue dial is a stunner. For myself though, I'll stick to my Grand Seikos (plus MUCH cheaper in stainless like my SBGH267 or titanium like my Snowflake). Grailwise - don't know if it'll ever happen but FP Journe is on my "someday" list! Ciao, John
John!!!!! wonderful to hear from you, I was rather worried. Love you choices, thank you so much for commenting, nice to know you are still there with your impeccable taste and wise comments. Glad to have you back! Onwards and upwards, TGV
I’m just a perfectionist...and a special note to Rolex lovers. You know how we all hate the thick lugs on the current Submariner...I discovered an easy fix. Get the Everest rubber strap. You still have the benefit of the glide lock deployant. And for whatever reason the lugs don’t look too big with the contrasting black rubber.
TGV, I have to mention your furniture.. as a third generation English furniture restorer I have to complement the pieces I can see! I wish period furniture was going the same way as vintage watches but as you are probably aware it's plummeted in value over the last 30 years. Hence my interest and dealings moving over to watches.. (just until the marked picks up again anyway 😅🤭)
I tried on the 40mm platinum day date recently. Boat anchor 😆 but beautiful with a hefty price tag to boot. My favorite everyday Rolex is my ceramic Submariner no date. 👍🏼
Hope your not spying on my Google searches TGV I myself have been eyeing this watch for the only watch I ever need Under the radar Can be dressed up or down Platinum more durable love it Patek and Lange do have more complications and beautifully ornamented movements but setting the complications and maintaining them are a different topic all together Hope we both get to own it someday
I went to my Rolex dealer today and this was the watch I put on my grail list. Absolutely loved it and it was the 36mm and thought it wore like a 40mm. I have an almost 8" wrist and it didn't look too small. I did notice the weight. It is a heavy watch
I heard the dial looks silver more than blue. Did you notice the glacier blue? I'm interested in this watch. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
@@dolcman81 the Blue looks blue. It didn't look grey to me at all. The white dial has a touch of grey to it. I love a blue dial and have a few different brands with blue. If I was going to purchase a Rolex, blue dial would be my choice
@@JohnDavis-ol7qg That's good to hear! So the 118206 glacier blue will be noticeable?! Some people say its looks more gray. I really want this watch but there is none in my area so I will have to buy without even seeing the dial! But its platinum so I think I will like it a lot! You input about the watch would greatly help!
wow. Generally I dont like rolex watches but this one is really nice. Also the 36mm fits your wrist so much better than some of the other watches on your videos. It is truly a classic and wonderful piece and the right size.
For me, the only beautiful( and i can add "very" beautiful) Day Date it's the 1803 of the seventies, whith plexi glass that add depth to the dial (that should be not in gold color), Champagne dial or Linen dial. Love it, and don't forget to mention that the plastic glass let hear you more of the ticking noise when you wear the watch. Daniele from italy
Another awesome Vid TGV, nicely done. I have an 07 two tone datejust, blue dial, jubilee bracelet with hidden Rolex clasp, got it along with my wife's wedding bands to commemorate our 25th anniversary. Now we are working towards our 40th in 3 more years, who knows what we'll get. Anyway, keep up the great work as always.
I've always appreciated the date complication as useful, but I;ve never understood the day complication. If you don't know what day it is, should you really be out walking around? That leads me to believe that the day complication is just for vanity.
For years, I wore an inexpensive Seiko automatic with day-date at my engineering job. They were popular in the 1960s and I wanted to carry on the tradition. It's mostly a gimmick but it would be useful when I was on vacation and forgot what day it was. Now that we have cell phones, even the date on a watch is for vanity, I prefer the cleaner look of time-only.
This is the best entertainment I have had in a long time. With a few quick videos of what to look for Real vs Fake and Rolex site near by.....thanks again
Just one example of many here: time frame 11.28 shows lint inside case between center of watch & oyster window being covered by second hand............go ahead tell me I'm wrong............
Good evening TGV, great video, the Day Date and the Datejust both deserve way more attention nowadays, when everything is Sub and GMT😉Even in 18k yellowgold or twotone these watches Go with everything, from formal attire to Jeans, T-Shirt and Sneakers. I‘m looking into twotone Datejusts with champagne dial at the moment, but I haven‘t been lucky yet. But the hunt is half of the fun, isn‘t it. Have a great evening.
It's an odd one for me. I'm currently wearing my Seiko 5 SNK621, which has the day date complication and is right at that 36mm size. Admittedly, I haven't experienced a Rolex Day-Date myself, but I can't quite wrap my mind around believing that that particular Rolex could feel to me like a good value at just how expensive it is. If anything I feel like I'm more likely to go with a SS Day-Date at a third the price of that one.
Dale Fredriks your the first one I’ve found who also has that cool watch. I call it my Seiko day date! The SNK621 is about 1/100th the price of the Rolex, and if compared the two side-by-side and had some one step you through it, I’m sure the differences would be obvious. That said, the Rolex is well outside of my price range.
@@wpherigo1 it was my first mechanical watch and one I will be holding on to for many many years. It's just subtly different from most other Seiko 5s and I love it
The color of the ice blue dial is superb, I’m not into the Roman numerals, though. The squared diamond indices versions look nice! Enjoy the countryside!
Love the white-gold Day Date (and the platinum), but the polished case on the newer model line turns me off. Just way too much of a swirl-magnet. My older brushed Day Date doesn't scratch up nearly as much. I also just don't like the look as much. Does the platinum scratch less than polished white gold?
Hi Tristano. I don't agree that the Day-Date II and The Day-Date 40 look less classy. I think it depends on the wrist. I do have a 19.5cm wrist and a 42mm watch looks just fine. So, for peaple like me, the 40 and 41mm day-dates are just awsome!
Absolutely, scale goes without saying and is always relative IMO My comment was aimed at the smaller to average wrist, wearing the later larger sizes with smaller wrists is deffo less elegant, but then again, that is just my tastes. Thank you Marco, Best regards, TGV
Roles is "the watch" and the platinum Day-Date is "the Rolex" so, this is definitely not only my favorite Rolex, but also my favorite watch of all time.
I just got a Mido Commander day-date for really cheap. Getting some work done to it right now. I love the watch and its gonna hold me over until i get myself a Rolex Day-Date..if that ever happens. College is almost over thankfully
At 14:53 of the video I couldn't stop laughing at the smile that was timed with the narrative regarding success being the reason behind a platinum timepiece such as that Rolex
Hey TGV. Long Island Marc mentioned that his platinum Yacht-Master was a scratch-magnet in one of his videos. Is it the same with the Day-Date (especially that smooth bezel), or is it a different composition of platinum?
Stunning, tasteful, and refined; the sublimity of the watch itself is beyond reproach. Rolex hit a grand slam with this one. Delightful video and historical discourse by you.
I have the day date in gold. It was my fathers, he worked his whole life to get it and wore it always.
Keep it safe. You have a family heirloom 👍
@Desiigner Adopt me if you like, I'm only 66.
Good for u next time will be yours
ARent all day dates in gold?
never mind stupid question shoulda googled it
You can’t beat the feel of a precious metal watch
I agree 100 percent with you on the 36mm. It is the most aesthetically pleasing size and shape. The larger ones expand in diameter but don't proportionally increase lug length ruining the shape.
36mms of the past. the recent references ( datejust 36) are too chunky and have lost their elegance.
@@jeffmullan8206 I agree

SlayerRock4ever - Parnis Daytona 😂
🤔 Ugly watch sorry. But when one is offered to me i will accept it... ( i'm a total hypocrite here 😁).
I wish Invicta made watches that were understated like this, then we wouldn't have to make fun of them.
I just bought a datejust this week . So now I own 3 Rolex watches. :)
Love the intro. Some beautiful watches.

Love you choices, thank you so much for commenting, nice to know you are still there with your impeccable taste and wise comments. Glad to have you back!
Onwards and upwards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry Don't worry I'm still here. Just don't get to comment as often as I used to. Thanks for your reply though.
Still love your grail watch series intro indeed! Great production, TGV!
I wonder who serviced that platinum President? The day wheel isn’t centered through the window...
Rolex most likely.
Thank you Rich,
Best regards,
TGV
Hope your not spying on my Google searches TGV
I myself have been eyeing this watch for the only watch I ever need
Under the radar
Can be dressed up or down
Platinum more durable love it
Patek and Lange do have more complications and beautifully ornamented movements but setting the complications and maintaining them are a different topic all together
Hope we both get to own it someday
Excellent points my friend, spot on.
Thank you Jaspreet, I hope we can both get to enjoy them too.
Best regards,
TGV
I like the intro music starts 0:05!
Seems like the perfect “exit” watch. Classy vid as usual.
Thank you Robert,
Ahhhh you nailed it, a worthy "exit watch", I love that term, nice one.
Best regards,
TGV
Why exit?
Gian Marco Campo I think Robert meant the watch to buy before you die... hmm, that rhymes! 😉
@Spanish John I resemble that remark...which is why I just bought a vintage Mido Ocean Star Commander.
I wore my uncle's 36mm platinum day-date on my wedding day, I completely understand your allure.
Wow that intro was amazingly good!
Thank you, Guilherme! Love your name,
Best regards,
TGV
Thank you, I fell honored! Love your channel.
Just the intro alone got a thumbs up 👍!
My grail is to get a like from Hugo!
I love the blue Face Platinum Day-Date , just something about it. Gorgeous.
Indeed, thank you Jack!
Best regards,
TGV
@@theurbangentry I want one now. Might have to sell my Patek. I have always liked this watch though. Gorgeous. Definitely on my radar now.
It's just subtly different from most other Seiko 5s and I love it
I didn't think they made a SS Day-Date?
@Spanish John you're right, I meant white gold, which is a lot closer in price to the platinum than I realised
This is the platinum day/date to own. I prefer the understated 36mm with Roman numerals and domed bezel vs new 40mm.
They are both great, but I do agree with you. One thing I can’t justify is the price between 36 mm and it’s bigger brothers 41 and 40
I smile every time I look at my Steinhart Ocean One.
THAT is precisely what it is all about!
Thank you Christopher,
Best regards,
TGV
That intro is sick!
Yes platinum is more scratch resistant
I am loving this 'mini series'. Please keep it going. I love finding out the best of each brand.
PLATINUM, looks attractive !!
Amazing how all replicas just don't cut it. May look the same yet the real deal has that clear edge that sets it miles apart!
Absolutely, scale goes without saying and is always relative IMO
My comment was aimed at the smaller to average wrist, wearing the later larger sizes with smaller wrists is deffo less elegant, but then again, that is just my tastes.
Thank you Marco,
Best regards,
TGV
14:30 Great observation, TGV! I appreciate your insight.
Prefer the cut bezel to the smooth due to the wonderful play of light & the warmth of the gold.
Awesome intro! It felt like my new favourite TV show ;)
For some strange reason I must to have one of these now too!
Your generic is excellent.
Platinum is Platinum period
Roles is "the watch" and the platinum Day-Date is "the Rolex" so, this is definitely not only my favorite Rolex, but also my favorite watch of all time.
Elegance in Platinum.
I just got a Mido Commander day-date for really cheap. Getting some work done to it right now. I love the watch and its gonna hold me over until i get myself a Rolex Day-Date..if that ever happens. College is almost over thankfully
Great video. Words flow so very well.
The yellow gold is the one.
Great question, certainly softer then steel, so while stronger then gold, it still will get scratches.
Thank you my friend,
Best regards,
TGV
I love the Day Dates with a wooden dial.:)
This watch is a thing of beauty!!
Stunning, tasteful, and refined; the sublimity of the watch itself is beyond reproach. Rolex hit a grand slam with this one. Delightful video and historical discourse by you.
