    Just bought one in January for 20k with only 30k miles on it. Absolutely. In. Love. With. This. Car. It is a blast to drive especially given you’re smart and get the 6 speed manual transmission.

    Loved your review. Very objective and to the point. Also liked how it seemed like you drove the vehicle for awhile before the review. One improvement I can offer is the price. The out the door price is not at $ 32,000 (40k Canadaian) even if that is what the sticker shows. The dealers are selling this car for less. I advise people to ask their dealers about this vehicle because it is possible to get it for $25,000 or lower. Thank you for the post!

    Solid review! Considering getting this car (since I can't quite afford the A4 that I want), but curious about the new Jetta coming out next year. VW has been knocking it out of the park lately, so i'm hoping they do the next Jetta justice. And also that they don't make us wait for the GLI model.

      My fiance had a 2017 A4 loaner when she brought her A3 in for service: I have to say that unless you're going to get a fully loaded A4 with at least an S-line package, the GLI is a far better driving car and IMHO more fun. Yes, the A4 is faster, but it's nowhere near as rewarding to drive. You're just paying for the prestige of the 4 circles on the front grill...

    Mike I paid near $35,000 for my 07 GTI which I still have. It now has 285,000 km on it and includes the DSG. My car has been flawless. It was expensive but in the end was well worth it. I'd buy this car however it would be a lightly used one as your tester looks similar to a 2007 GLI. Anyway, carry on.

    You can probably (here in the U.S.) find a 2017 Jetta GLI for less than $25K, if you shop around. Got mine last month for a little over $24K. A great deal for a great car.

    Here in the US 2016-2017s are sitting on dealer lots in the low $20k's. Not a bad car and fairly tunable. It just sucks that if you get one this late, the brand new model will be out soon.

    I wish I had that interior on my 1.4 TSI Jetta, lol. I would have went for the GLI at the time of purchase but I already had a summer car and just wanted a daily. The GLI is a nice understated entry-level performance car - with a tune it would be fun :). If it were in the low $30K out the door I'd be driving it and not the 1.4T

    i had the 2011 GLI and one thing that bothered me was the trunk. Most people park on driveways and mine has a slight slope and when i open the trunk it wold always come back down as i was inside the trunk getting groceries. In all car reviews i always see reviewers talk about trunk space but its always on flat pavement. try it on a slope and see if it will stay up.

      Kenny Albert There is a lot more to what makes a GLI a "GLI" than just a beefy engine..
      1. DSG transmission
      2. XDS cross differential
      3. Larger diameter sway bars w/sway bar linkage
      4. VWR coil springs
      5. GLI front fascia
      6. LED tail lights
      7. Chrome exhaust tips
      8. Black head liner
      9. GLI interior accents
      10. Footwell lighting
      11. Fender premium audio
      12. Self dimming rear view mirror
      13. GLI sport steering wheel
      14. Blind spot monitoring
      15. Rear cross traffic warning
      16. Park pilot
      17. GLI red fabric stitching
      18. Paddle shifters
      19. Rain sensing wipers
      20. Side flairs/ground effects..
      I'm not sure a GLI-esque sport tuned suspension, sport bucket seats and some custom rims qualifies as a "sport model", but it's all in the packaging I guess?

    What really annoys me is manufacturers only offer engine upgrade on the top trim in attempt to upsell people who wants the better engine. Fortunately there are still others who offers it on lower trims, so VW lost a customer instead of upsell me.

    40k for a gli!? Here in the US I've seen the 2017 for as low as 21k with DSG. The golf R on the other hand is 41k.

  • @aziz-qp7pm
    @aziz-qp7pm 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    People choose the DSG because it handles power a lot better than the manual. Many GLI owners will APR tune it at their local VW dealer, which would put it at 260hp and 300ft-lb torque.
    Seems like you hardly did any research on the car before hand. Also, you seem to have such a negative attitude towards this car.

  • @craigt9415
    @craigt9415 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Considering this car is comparable to the Hyundai Elantra Sport which is $10,000 less the GLI is crazy expensive. Even a trendline sport/tech with the 1.8L is almost as nice and you can get them for under $30K, 40hp (and the premium gas to go with it) for $10K just isn't worth it.

  • @SonOfTamriel

      Whaaaat?? So the Canadian GLI is 60% more expensive than the US version whereas the Canadian Golf R is merely 15% more expensive than the US version?!? Ouch!!! I cant imagine its even worth selling it there at that point given the regular GTI is more powerful, better handling and more upscale.

      Got a price quote for this car w/dsg $25k here in the US. Being this is the end of the model year, and this model is due to be redesigned/refreshed, I think that discount off msrp is good, but still not enough. Also, not enough of a price difference from what you can get a GTI for. I don't like to compare the amenities of a GLI vs the GTI, because the GLI pretty much comes fully loaded, but as we know the GTI does not. Putting the handling differences aside, the main point of contention I have always had in comparing the GLI to the GTI, is the engine. Same engine, yet the GLI has 210 hp/207 tq, and the GTI has the 210 or 220/258 tq. Is this just because the GTI is on the newer platform ? It seems clear that the mission statement for VW North America with the GLI and GTI is clearly different. More comfort tuned entry level performance sedan vs entry level to mid level performance hatchback. I believe they should build them on equal ground, and have the consumers choice simply come down to one question: Do I want a sedan or a hatchback. With the 2018 models, hopefully that will happen. Also, I would like to see a Jetta R to go in line with the Golf R. Consumer choice in car buying is a good thing. I know car manufacturers are very opposed to that line of thinking, as well as to change. The Audi guys would probably object to a Jetta R here in the US, but I think it would be great to be able to choose a Jetta R if you wanted one instead of the Golf R.

    • @chairrules2007
      @chairrules2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes smasila, thats an interesting point. Generally the price of a VW is marked up in the US by about $3-4K, yet the resale value is decidedly lower than avg. come trade in or resale time. Toyota or Honda may have the so called "reliability reputation markup" when you buy it, but the resale value holds up to stay true to that come trade in/resale time. I have always liked some of the VW vehicles over the years, but lets just call it what it is. The long term reliability of the VW's is suspect. If it wasn't, then the resale values wouldn't plummet the way they do vs some other brands (such as Honda and Toyota).

    I have this car in the 2016 model. Love it, but just know those stock tires are absolute garbage.
    Edit: I'm not sure how the price came to 40k for this car. Msrp on my 2016 was 30,500, and I know someone who picked theirs up for 26,500 from a dealer trying to get rid of it. Both are fully loaded SEL models. I presume you are using Canadian dollars not USD which may explain things.

    • @Doubleyou115
      @Doubleyou115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Canadian $ and this was a fully loaded model. The price I quote included tax and was simply to illustrate that the all-in price is getting dangerously close to that $40k point. According to many viewers there are handsome discounts to be found on this GLI as it's the last of this generation before being updated for 18'.

      Reset your trip meter when you fill up for gas.
      When you fill it again later, look at the trip meter and divide it by how much gas you filled.
      In my experience VW gets better than their rating. Most cars do.
      My V8 Audi says 22 hwy but I can actually get closer to 25 or better.

    • @rightwingsafetysquad9872
      @rightwingsafetysquad9872 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@GeekTherapyRadio VWs only get better mileage on premium fuel. The Mk6 GTI says it can operate on 90 octane, but when I put 91 in it only gets ~26 mpg highway. When I put 93 in it jumps to ~31 mixed. I try to only use Marathon and Sunoco in it.

    "For 40K' i'd be looking at the Golf R". But you are comparing the after tax+fees price of the GLI (which is 35K base price) to the base price of the R? It's like when you compare cars, you forget the higher tier car ALSO has tax+fees on top of its base price, making the comparison invalid.

    • @mikem2253
      @mikem2253 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      RemX405 it's also invalid because the Jetta is a far larger car than the golf. People buying Jettas find the Golf too small (why we bought our 1.8 TSI Jetta).

    • @Hintonbro.
      @Hintonbro. 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    • @Doubleyou115
      @Doubleyou115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey guys, my thought process was this: at $36-37k it's well into the Golf R "sphere", if you will. If you're looking for a sporty small car, it's not unthinkable that you could be upsold if the budget gap is only 2-4 thousand dollars. It's the low-hanging fruit within the VW brand so I decided to go with that.

    • @Hintonbro.
      @Hintonbro. 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mike Gurr but it isn't in the same sphere - go beyond the MSRP and investigate actual selling prices. GLI : discounts, cars available. Golf R : none available for months and zero discounts.
      It's an unfair comparison man.
