2018 Volkswagen GTI - Still The BEST Daily Driver You Can Buy

  • The long running quintessential hot hatch gets a few upgrades for 2018. Highlighting those changes are a new look, more power, improved interior tech, and better standard equipment. It still feels like a more sophisticated car then it should be, but fully loaded models have an eye-watering sticker price that eclipses $35,000 dollars.

I have put 4 years and 50 thousand miles on my 2015 GTI. I tend to drive it like I stole it because the car is so dynamic, it begs to be driven hard. I look forward to my commute every single day as a result. I have been meticulous with the maintenance, and it has been flawless, still driving and even looking brand new, still comfortable, spacious, practical, and fun. Toyotas are for people who go out shopping for a new dishwasher and come home with a car. It's just an appliance, designed to run as many joyless miles as possible, all while having the maximum number of cup holders.

That fun-to-drive feel (Fahrvegnugen?) is integrated into the Golf’s DNA, they all handle brilliantly, whether it’s an entry level or all the way to the Golf R, the only real difference is the power output
My ‘07 Rabbit (MkV Golf) is just as much fun as my ‘12 Golf TDI, actually the TDI is slightly more fun, due to the 236 FT-LB of torque, the Rabbit only has 170 TQ

The GTI is so nice, handles great, rides smooth even at 90MPH, not a lot of road noise at all, smooth shifts, such comfortable seats. I haven't found anything I can say I don't like. The ~ 35-36K “Autobahn” VW GTI comes with more standard features than your typical $50K+ Luxury sports sedan.
So to insist that the Top of the line / Autobahn GTI is somehow “too much money” doesn’t really make much sense.
For ~35K you’re getting standard equipment typically reserved for automobiles costing over $10K more combined with a vehicle that is more fun to drive than many “sports cars” all the while providing luxury car like ride quality.
This isn’t even to mention the outstanding premium Audi-like build quality inside and out. When one takes all into consideration the GTI Autobahn is one hell of a deal.
Not one ~ $40K automoble matches the Autobahns combination of sport, comfort and utility.
But your can get an STI, Civic Type R or Gold R for that price...
STI? Sure great performance and when running balls to the wall around a rally course loads of fun...
But here’s the thing how bout the rest of the time / 99.9% of the time you’re using the car as a daily driver? Yeah not so much fun anymore...
Civic Type R? Much the same story as the WRX STI but is probably a bit better on a road course (in which 99.9% never use they’re daily driver’s for).
The Civic Type R is probably easier to live with day to day but compared to the VW GTI Autobahn it’s simply no where close to being the total package of a vehicle.
Golf R? Okay so this is a GTI with AWD and + 76HP / 22FT-LB TQ and all this does does by in large is produce a GTI that is a bit quicker (mainly do to AWD launch) but in actuality isn’t any more fun or rewarding to drive just more expensive and capable of a sub 5 second 0-60mph due to AWD launch if you’re into the “bragging rights” aspect...
The AWD will be mostly a negative 99% of the time as it adds weight (something you feel 100% of the time) which ends up costing you more money to refuel. It as well affects how the car feels in general (not as light on its feet obviously)
The extra power is again totally unnecessary as the GTI with it’s massively under-rated 220HP/258FT-LB TQ@ 1500rpm is more than adequate. More power would basically just mean more money spent on fuel, tires, brake pads, etc..
When you consider the actual “power to weight” ratio the difference between the GTI and Golf R aren’t as big. There’s a reason the Golf R doesn’t “feel” much if any quicker than the GTI.
The actual power to ratio difference is very small so in most real world driving scenarios (20-60, 30-70, 40-80+,etc..) both cars will accelerate at a very similar rate.
To me it makes more sense to go with the GTI Autobahn as its no less fun to drive (arguably more so) is not as expensive to begin with and is cheaper to maintain and insure.

Bought a Focus ST last year that I love. Best handling car in its class. Didn't even consider the GTI (too many friends with VW horror stories). However, I got to drive one of these about a month ago and it's amazing how much more luxurious this car feels compared to mine. Literally night and day. And that DSG is other worldly! It bangs shifts off so damn quick. I don't regret my purchase considering the price I paid (Ford is giving STs away), but this is definitely the better car for daily driving, bar none.

Autobahn also includes the formerly optional Drivers Assistance Package with all the tech (adaptive cruise/active lane keep/blind spot monitoring/auto high beams) and for 2018 now has standard adaptive dampers. With that, it’s not really more expensive than a similar 2017 and it has the 6 year/72k bumper to bumper warranty which is pretty insane.

P I yeah hey man! No Cavalier anymore? The TDIs are good, especially before they recalled them. I had a ‘16 GTI with all the options a couple cars ago, loved it but now have a BMW. I’m looking at a GTI just like this one for my wife. She’s got a Mustang with a turbo now but looking for something a little more practical.
All good choices on what you are looking at. Always liked Miatas. For about the same money I’ve always thought a C5 Corvette is a good option for something fun. They’re reasonably cheap, easy to work on and there’s a lot of good ones for sale (since many were owned by old guys who didn’t drive them). Also 350Zs are good. The 3.5 is an awesome engine with a good exhaust note

    • @erickelly4107
      @erickelly4107 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah the Autobahn has more standard features than your typical 40-50K luxury sports sedan.
You combine that with the fact that it’s performance is on par or superior to cars costing 40-50K, is as or more fun to drive, all around practicality of the hatchback design, the excellent build quality inside/out, etc.
So I don’t understand those who say the GTI Autobahn is somehow “overpriced” as that just doesn’t make any sense when you put the car into its proper context. I can’t think of a better all around automobile for ~40K.
For ~50K now I would seriously consider either a Alfa Remo Giulia or Audi A4 quattro but neither of those can be had for anything close to 40K with any options.
But again for the 35-40K range its the GTI Autobahn as the best overall automobile for its combination of sport, comfort and luxury.

Not a fan of the new lights and rims but I got the base 2016 and have 45k miles and it’s great. Did a 1000 mile trip to Toronto this past summer. Compact for parallel parking, fits 5 people, comfortable but fast when you need it. It’s very stable at high speeds for a car this price and very predictable on fast turns. The front starts to give on fast turns if you push it too much but you lay off the gas and gain control ASAP. I did 70mph on a 25mph highway ramp lol. Overall multi use fast, good on gas and predictable. Hope this helped

I really enjoy my 2018 VW GTI SE 6 speed manual. Dealer was pretty motivated, almost $5K off sticker. My complaints? It is way too quiet. With the ridiculous fake engine sound shut off, you cannot hear the engine at all. I've also had issues with the infotainment system rebooting itself at random when using navigation.

Great review!! I used to travel a lot as a corporate programmer. I have rented EVERYTHING from nice performance infinit's, Mercedes, Toyota's you name it. If you like to drive cars as I do, hands down, the BEST of the all those cars was the 2017 VW GTI. I rented one with the plaid interior and a beautiful white exterior. I was literally laughing every time I had to pass someone. It's a shame that this vehicle doesn't sell a lot more units in these "United" States. The VW GTI is simply an amazing vehicle.

Try as hard as he could, the sales rep could not talk me out of my color/interior choice. The only one available in my color/interior choice in the state of Texas was in Laredo. I'm in the DFW area. Dealer went to Laredo to get the car. Car is fun to drive and very responsive. Would have to be a really special car for me to trade in my GTI.

I grew up on Volkswagons. My first VW was a 75 Rabbit.I have owned a VW Dasher, 2 Rabbits and a GTI. They were all great cars...they were fun to drive, fast, handled well and were fast (I said that already!). But all of them had one thing in common...mechanical issues. They all ate oil, ran hot in Southern California summers, and always had some issue or another. My brand new GTi would eat a quart of oil every few weeks, the temp gauge would almost hit the red in stop and go traffic in the summer, and relays would blow out all the time. The dealer would tell me that this was "within factory tolerance". Some of my friends who drive VW's tell me they constantly have annoying mechanical issues. In 1995 I traded VW for Toyota, and all my problems went away...

Jon Car cost. In the US with exchange rates we are paying sometimes 25-50% less for GTIs than in Europe. If VW equipped these like they do in Europe they would cost $45-50k US. Keep in mind the Golf R is right at $40k here so it would cost more than that.

I have had 5 Rabbit/Golfs GTI's and a sorted Mk6 would be ideal BUT a 2009 Type R with DSG hits the sweet spot of price, practicality and capabilities - and stealth. Also, it is a well known secret that VW really understates the power numbers for insurance purposes and that drive train setup can pump out over 350hp without too much coaxing.
Pay close attention to the engine mounts, bushings (swap them out for urethane), wiring harnesses, sensors, change the oil frequently and you are good to go for a extremely long time.

People might not understand a gti. but I’ll simply put it this way. With simple bolt on mods and a good tune from apr or unitronic you’d be putting bus lengths on evos and Stis. Look it up yourself on TH-cam and make the research. I’d take Vw any day and tune my car again again and again. You won’t be disappointed in what hp and torque you can get for a 20-23 k car with less then 1500 k in modifications which can get you more power then stis and type r and evos. After tuning it,
made the power jump to a hybrid is38 golf r stock turbo for another 1g and make 390-400 whp and still get the best bang for your buck in an under 30 k vehicle . 2017 gti pp pack with simple mods and trust me I’ve put lengths on tuned sts stis evos . Make your research these little hot hatches are the best bang for your buck under 30 k . As a last note if you guys do buy into a gti. Do the oil changes every 5 k miles and run motul full synthetic on it of course. Don’t do the 10 k oil change the dealership recommends. Take care of the car and the car will take care of you

Like any car, just take care of it and it'll be fine. I still have a 1983 Delorean that runs fine. I even tortured it delivering pizza for a couple years. Just take care of your cars.

I’m scared to get a German/British car due to reliability concerns, but I am thinking about getting a GTI. From what I’ve heard, if you buy these cars new and maintain them heavily/properly, they will last a while. These cars require more maintenance than a corolla to last the same amount of miles. From what I’ve seen, the GTI checks all of the boxes in this segment and my single complaint about it is the rev hang. Maybe I’ll buy one with the six speed manual one day. I’m guessing you drive automatic so if you want a faster car that’s reliable, why not get the Camry V6? It has 300 hp.

I think the low mileage mk7 GTIs are a fantastic value on the used market. I bought a 2 door 6 speed manual 2016 GTI with 15ish thousand miles for less than $17k. I've since driven an additional 30 thousand miles and couldn't be happier.
