I wont lie, Legion had its teething problems but it still is my all time favorite expansion. It had SO much content that its insane. And most of it good content.
I feel the same. I think it's important that we try and cast our minds back to how we felt at the time, and perhaps not how cynical and upset we may have become with the retail version of the game, as Legion is guilty of those sins. But for its time, it was a great experience.
The last 3 or so months of Legion were the most fun I've ever had at the end of an expansion. That's when the Mage Tower was up all the time. Worked up a plan and got all 36 appearances for the artifacts. Nothings come close since. @@edd_TV
i couldn't agree with this more, the only thing i wish was they carried the weps on to future expansions so you could upgrade them as the game progressed and just gave us new xmogs for them per xpac just my opinion not all agree but it would have been awesome for all classes to have there own unique wep that had meaning.
If all you need for class fantasy is order hall then its no wonder WoW is on downward spiral. Older xpacs had much better class fantasy, order hall was cheapest way of doing some "class fantasy" but again if people praise it they deserve the low standard game that is ongoing now.
@@Ithiilien its impossible to make nerds like you happy anyway. You will always find something to complain about. And btw that is your opinion that doesnt make it true now does it. Seeing Suramar for the first time as an aerial view.... holy shit. And then you find out its not just background scenery and you get to go into the city? Blew my young mind
Suramar whenit first released was dangerous as hell as well! before we could fly! running around that city if you werent a geared tank could easily get you killed!!
Legion was excellent. I didn't take a break that entire expac. Class halls, class mounts, hidden artifact appearances, Mage Tower challenge, flexible leveling path, revamped Karazhan, Suramar storyline (the most immersive WoW experience that I can remember).... absolutely LOVED that expac. I have no desire to do the whole "WoW Classic" experience, but I will make an exception if Blizz does a Legion Classic.
I agree with all of this, for me the literal only downside to Legion was the random legendary system, if they allowed players to have some or full control over that system it would be perfect in my eyes.
@@_Augie Got my legendaries in almost exactly reverse order from worst to best. I was competitive the entire time but knowing that if i had the right legendary id be doing 20% more damage and absolutely stomping my guildmates kinda annoyed me. Didn't help that i finally got the bis legendary the week after it got nerfed.
I have fond memories of legion and this video just made me realize what a great time I had with Legion. If classic ever gets this far, it's very likely I would take another spin. Thanks for another great video Edd!
@@marieotoole9920they should definitely have a “Classic WoW” server branch and a “Modern Classic” branch. Cat alienated a lot of people and pretty much every expac afterward did too, so it would be beneficial to keep the two separate in some way.
@@marieotoole9920 Cata and Mists are both polarising, but I think both will have a better reception in classic than they did retail. I think MoP is so underrated!
@@edd_TV I agree. People sleep on MoP and give it so much grief because of "pandas" and "China". But class balance was so fun and the content cadence was actually S tier
I think that's what it ultimately comes down to. I think with the right people, you can make anything fun. I don't doubt some people probably had great times in Shadowlands with their friends/guild. I agree with you, it was the people that shined the biggest light on this expansion for me. The content itself was just a really nice bonus.
Legion holds a very fond place in my heart. My girlfriend got me into WoW right before WoD dropped. So, Legion was when I felt like I had shook off my noob goggles after stumbling through WoD. I was getting into heroic raid progression during Legion, found my favorite class and spec (Frost Mage). Legion released when we both were first starting college, right during the month we first moved in together. Blasting WoW, farming transmog, old reps and mounts together with our PC setups side-by-side. It was a great, innocent time. I can't listen to the Mage Order Hall soundtrack without tears being brought to my eye. There is a beautiful pain behind such nostalgic memories.
@@Afflictamine If Classic Legion is ever going to happen, both of these need to be implemented. I think keep the AP grind to some degree, but it shouldn't be anywhere near as demanding as before. They also need to allow players to choose their own legendaries!
@@gmdm9319 It's very likely that will happen I think! I think they will continue to do Q&A's to gauge people's interest. It's a shame that WoD would be overlooked, but it's understandable why.
@@schmidth It will be interesting for sure. The lifespan of SoD will surely play a role in all of this too. I don't think Classic+ will be ready by the time MoP classic has concluded, so something will have to happen. And Blizzard are very aware that The Worldsoul Saga isn't going to bring ALL old players back, so they have to appeal to the Classic players somehow. I would put money on Classic fresh.
I think so many did! I loved every second of it and I was so excited for BFA, hoping that it would have been more of the same. I want to believe that The Worldsoul Saga will be similar to Legion, but I don't think we'll see anything close again. TBC holds a very special place in my heart, but Legion wins it for me.
@@hsmith_z It sucks that you missed out, but I hope you have managed to collect some of the sets you like in Legion because there are so many good ones!
@@hsmith_z The paladin set from Antorus is one of my favourites. They did such a good job. I used it for ages until I got the Shadowlands Mage Tower reskin!
Thanks for this video, Legion was insane. If you played it at the time you experienced the best of 'modern wow' to date imo. Between the storytelling and raids, class order halls and artifact weapons, debut of M+, mage tower and Suramar, WoW hasn't come close ever since imo. The feeling of beating the mage tower when it first came out (I did it on may main spec the first weekend it was up, had shitty gear and low AP) is one of my fondest memories in the game.
@@Quark214 there are okish onces with mainly russian players but Tauri WoW release a beta for Legion which will release in maybe 2 month by now. They got older projects like MoP and WotlK and they got a lot of mentions for best scripted server, ...
I also loved Legion. The reason for me, and probably for many others (subconsciously) is that we began killing wolves or boars, trying to protect some trainees in our starting zone. The modern equivalent to D&D's "You all start in a tavern..." you begin your adventures in Azeroth as a nobody. You level up to the point where the leaders of the factions may have even heard of you, whether you saved Marshal Windsor and uncovered Onyxia or lead your team of adventurers into the bowls of Molten Core to defeat the Fire Lord (Ragnaros) himself! You joined Khadgar in Outland, defeated the infamous Lich King, Slew the dreaded Deathwing, and meditated with hippie pandas before playing with time travel and alternate universes. Finally... you were the head of your order, Highlord of the Silver Hand (Paladins), and you had come a long way from those early days fighting wolves to protect the abbey outside of Stormwind. You wielded weapons of yore, made famous by other heroes! You improved upon that weapon with artifact power and became an amazingly powerful version of yourself. So this was the full circle for our characters that we had been playing for years. It was the final chapter, as we had achieved all that we could have dreamed in the early days. It was the culmination of all of our hard work and the last strings of story that needed to be finished off as we defeated the Demonic Legion of Sargaras and helped trap the Titan himself. This was the last of WC3 storylines that needed to be answered for and we did it, well... we and our order hall members, but we were there! Anyway, that's why I believe many people enjoyed it. Thanks for reading!
Loved your storytelling with the 'through-the-years' of WoW, very enjoyable read. I think the 'head of your order' thing is quite a topic. In another of my videos I talk about how we are now regarded as 'Azeroth's Champions' or we get bestowed with throwaway titles such as 'The Maw-Walker' for instance. A lot of people disliked this more than I thought. I think maybe I got used to it from playing so much FFXIV, where you are essentially the main character and hero: the Warrior of Light. A lot of people in the comments said they felt fed up with this in WoW, and just wanted to go back to being an ordinary adventurer. I think it's horses for courses though. We all like and enjoy different things and have expectations with a story experience. I really like your summary of this, and it definitely felt full circle. I think if Legion was the final word in World of Warcraft's arc, I would have been very happy with it. Really great comment. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts and feelings!
@@edd_TV i would have liked BFA to have been WoW2. Years later, new adventures take up the mantle of defenders of the horde and alliance, level to 60 in Kul Tiras or Zandelar, as the blood of Azeroth soaks the littered battlefields of warring factions. But I digress. You're right about the champion fatigue too, I was a general during WoD, Order Hall commander in Legion, champion during BFA, and so on. And yet... no one seemed to know us, as we were still made to do menial tasks for every quest giver who needed us to pick through garbage for trinkets. So I believe people were frustrated because despite the fact they called us champion and hero, we weren't actually treated as such and after a while it feels like mockery. Just my opinion on that. Back to xpac design, patch cadence was top notch, 12 variations of the story to play through, such as the rogue hall uncovering the betrayal of the broken shore offensive vs hunters defeating the hound master to cut off more reinforcements. Each Order hall provides more story to help give different views on the events. It was great. Awesome upload 👌
@@superj-man137 I very much agree on the champion fatigue. You hit the nail on the head. Thank you! Thank you for your comments and glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you for covering this. Legion was one of my favourites too! Didn't take a single break throughout, and the narrative had me hooked. Another brilliant video! (Also that RO music you're using as an outro has me feeling really nostalgic)
Never say never for Classic or some sort of Remix iteration down the line! Blizzard are very aware how much people love Legion. It would be a crime to not do anything with it again.
Great video! I have very fond memories of Legion, especially since I only played the last 2 patches. I didn't have a lot of the issues surrounding the artifact power grind & legendary RNG that others had early on. I remember the day BFA pre patch hit, people weren't even looking forward to the new expansion at all. Everyone in the guild wanted to stay in Legion. I've never seen that happen with new expansion content before. We all knew BFA couldn't possibly be as good as Legion was, and oh boy were we right. I genuinely believe if they were to bring Legion classic to life, it would be immensely popular. However if they do, I hope they adjust a few things first and then go ahead with it. It definitely needs a few tweaks for it to be as successful as it could be. (such as ditching the titanforging altogether, legendary RNG, and perhaps pathfinder too. I hated that shit as someone who started the expansion late, it felt almost impossible to achieve unless you were unemployed) Other than that, it truly was (imo) the peak of modern WoW. Whilst its to blame for a lot of the system issues that unfolded in BFA & Shadowlands, Legion had so many positives it didn't really matter. As you said, we were spoiled for content & storylines.
Thank you! I think they would have to adjust things for Classic Legion, for sure. I agree with all of your points, and it will be interesting to see if Classic WoW has the legs to make it to Legion! Thank you for such a well written comment, and thanks for watching!
@@edd_TV I think it would be awesome if we had Classic Legion, and it could be a good expansion to "end" the classic series on. The expansion (as you said) felt like we finally closed the chapter on the WC3 storyline. Problem is, we'd have to go through WoD classic to get it, which i don't think they'll ever do despite it having a tonne of potential if they were to fix its problems.
Same here. I did surprisingly have some good times in BFA and I really liked MoP, but Legion was just perfect for me. Never say never for Legion Classic or maybe a Remixed version of it!
Siege of Orgrimmar was my entire Freshman year in high school. It released when I first stepped into high school, and then the Warlords of Draenor pre-patch was released near Halloween my sophomore year.
I've only just found your channel as this was a surprise recommendation to me. I must say it was a genuinely heart tugging video that reminded me of how I felt during Legion. I was only able to play the first couple of patches of Legion but I always kept up with it through media and the association of my friends and the tales we told about the incredible things we had. Each of us with a unique experience of the classes or secrets that we've discovered in the nooks or crannies of the Broken Isles. While there were of course moments of down and poor experiences, from Tyrion's screwed over death to the awful artifact grind and insanely uncontrollable legendaries. It reminded me greatly of how Wrath operated, an absolutely incredible expansion with so many damning long term introductions. However, with all that said, Legion is how I and many others in my friend circles choose to describe WoW's *Perfect* modern expansion The honouring of the days long gone, the stories told and each of the NPCs and fascinating storylines that were exuded in the nature of the Class Halls. The stories told of the Broken Isles, of the War of the Ancients finally revealed, the incredible ability to finally have an "Artifact" and to get those absolutely fucking incredibly feeling buffs and bonuses as you move down the trees. To professions feeling needed, and the unique nature of the quests and delving into the capacity to learn and explore the world for the improvements, and how could I possibly forget the Artifact Fishing Rod. Chef's kiss one and all. I still to this day regret missing the Mage Tower and the later patches of the Expansion. Fantastic video and a fantastic reminder of the joy I had in WoW. I'm not sure I'll return for War Within but I hope it is even half as good as Legion was.
Thank you for your kind words and sharing your thoughts and feelings. I hope you do consider giving The War Within a shot as I have a really good feeling about it. I'm not sure if anything can replicate how good Legion was, but it will be interesting to see how it does. Thank you for watching, this was a really nice read!
I still say to this day. That Legion should have been the last expansion before transfering to a WoW2. Put old WoW on high maintanance life support, start working on WoW2 and releasing Warcraft4 between the dev time leading to release.
Warcraft 4 would be sweet. I think some of what you said will come true though. WoW will be eventually in maintenance mode whilst WoW 2 is in production.
Warcraft 4 could have told the story of the 4th war better, and then launch WoW 2 with Dragonflight could have been nice, but given how attached people are to their stuff it's a risky proposition. I remember the swap over from Destiny 1 to Destiny 2 and losing all my kit felt really bad, but that was partially due to the massive simplification. Over time they brought back good build crafting, but it took a while.
@@EloquentTroll It's a huge risk, for sure. I think it will happen at some point. WoW 2 seems inevitable. I think the performance of the Worldsoul Saga will dictate what comes next. I would love a Warcraft 4!
@@EloquentTroll Why I would have made WoW1 as it were to be on life support, still getting quarterly patches and seasons. So not abandoning it, that would be stupid. BUT I should elaborate what I had envisioned with WoW2, maybe even rename it in to "Worlds Of Warcraft" going as far as destroying Azeroth by making the Titan awaken. And having all the races and faction scramble to reach other worlds via high magic spaceships, portals etc and finding other conflicts and discoveries in the great sea. Go on full high magic spellpunk setting with a long time skip. Something unique and different enough from any other game setting that it wouldn't conflict with the original WoW to much, such as Everquest did jumping from 1 to 2 or the aforementioned Destiny 1 to 2.
@@Geraduss I really think Blizzard is allergic to exactly that risk, and honestly they should be. Having the world soul birthed without losing the old world is a plan I think they'll follow, but not gonna lie I'm personally intrigued by the exact possibility you bring up. Having said that if I can't keep my Grand Expedition Yak and it's full functionality I might be grumpy.
was so fun to log in and just be in the order hall around other classes and check them out. i wish i could relive this expansion probably the best game ive ever played
The quickest 40 minutes that ever passed! Many good memories about Legion but I've got my BiS legendary only when argus came so I was far far behind in dps as a rogue Grinding artifact power was a chore and AN ILLUSION part is still pains me to this day. But many more good things came from Legion. I hope class order halls will return sometime and more cool class stories too!
Glad you liked it! I think it's important to view the game that way, and the criticisms are absolutely valid. It had its strengths and weaknesses, but I do still think it's the best we have seen in a long, long time. I too would love to see the Class Order Halls return in some fashion, or at least more of a focus on class identity. Thank you for watching!
I did too! My Mythic experience in WoD was extremely limited, and I think Mythic and the future of it is a really interesting subject right now. Thanks for watching!
That's incredibly kind of you to say, thank you! I can't take credit for the way it was written though, I was simply just reading the Reddit post! That's really nice of you to say though and definitely something I plan to look into. Thank you for your support and encouragement!
I firmly believe that a major reason why Legion was so well received was because it was the expansion that came after Warlords of Draenor, arguably the worst expansion until Shadowlands came around. Legion was a complete 180 for Blizzard. We really thought that Blizzard was going to double down and make yet another disastrous expac, but then they surprised us with Legion and it was an absolute hit. I’m glad Blizzard finally saw the light, it was the next WotLK of the new generation.
I agree. Blizzard really needed a win after WoD so I think whatever they provided would have been a drastic improvement. I think the issue was we kinda went from having no content to tons of it, in regards to the replayability and the grinding. And I think that's quite a polarising thing. I loved it personally. I was SO bored in WoD, so to have all of this stuff to do felt great for me. But I do understand why it really upset others and deterred them from Legion. 'WotLK of the new generation' is a great way to describe it.
@@edd_TV My most memorable moment of WoD was the disastrous launch. Couldn’t log in because the servers were overloaded so much that people were getting outrageously long wait times on the login screen ( _Queuelords of Draenor_ ), and on top of that the game frequently crashed during the introductory experience so even if you got in, the game client failed and you had to log back in and wait in the queue. It lasted for almost the first week after launch from what I remember. Then the worst part is playing the actual expansion and realizing it wasn’t that great in the first place.
Ive played since the original WoW beta, and still consider Legion the best expansion Blizzard ever released. Only TBC and Wrath really stood any chance of challenging Legion. Legion catered to every single part of the WoW playerbase. The open world was thriving, PvP was alive, Raiding was doing great and M+ was introduced. There was always something to do. All content was relevant for everyone. Legion is legit the only expansion where I regret not playing more World of Warcraft. If I had known this was going to be as good as it was ever going to get I would have played much more. Now we get 3 raids and 10 bad dungeons every expansion, and the most boring progression system in the history of WoW with ZERO class fantasy. Genuinely sad. Loved the vid, loved Legion.
I agree with you. I think TBC and Wrath really had that Warcraft stamp of approval in the eyes of all. it was familiar and true to the roots of Warcraft. This is a great comment, and you sum up my feelings perfectly. Thank you for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
That's great to hear! I know some people have struggled with Legion in Chromie Time as you don't really get the 'true' experience, but it's so great to hear people are still having fun with Legion.
I think its the best WoW has ever been. I sure loved TBC and Wotlk, MoP had probably the best raids and the best class design but legion was something special to me. It had by far the best Dungeons ever made and Nighthold and Argus were amazing. Sure the legendary system was frustrating, i remember playing in a top progress guild and my guild leader leveled 5 Monks to max, just to get the BiS items, because the bad luck protection was so bad after you got your first two legendaries, that leveling a new char to max was a faster method. The only thing i really hated about the expansion was titanforging, i once got a BiS trinket from LFR with a max titanforge procc and i felt honestly bad about it. It felt so underserved and it actually ruined my motivation doing mythic raids. But besides that, absolutely amazing expansion!
TBC is up there for me too, but I think when I look back it's mainly due to how my life was in that period of time. There was nothing better than getting home from school and booting up WoW. I feel the same about Wrath too. I think MoP did have some great raids, Throne of Thunder is hugely slept on in my opinion! Thank you for your comment, and thanks for watching!
Trinket balance was terrible anyway. Nothing really good or interesting, you prayed you get a titanforged arcanocrystal and you had it till the end of the game 🤣
Great Video! Me personally i still look back to Legion with a happy face when i think of the artifact fishing pole... it felt so good to finally get something interesting as a fishing player and boy oh boy was this pole looking badass!
Haha, I was actually going to dedicate a segment to professions and reference the fishing pole but I was worried the video was going to get too long (and I never anticipated it being as well received as it has!) so I cut it. That fishing pole had some pretty cool perks! Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Legion was amazing, I agree with almost everything you said, but it had 3 main problems. 1. PVP sucked -- It was the beginning of noodle rotation + strong CD, which got mostly fixed in SL, so it's all good now. 2. Artifact power grind(BFA had the same problem, which they solved in 8.2) - which if you didn't Mythic Raid and didn't do combined M+ keys weren't a problem, I was always behind in Artifact power, especially in BFA and it didn't prevent me from clearing Heroic raids and +10/15 M+ dungeons. 3. Legendaries - yeah they aren't legendary at all. Also I disagree, at least on Heroic Tomb of Sargeras was fantastic, I still think Nighthold and Antorus were better, but ToS is one of the best raids of all time for sure.
Thank you for sharing PvP related stuff, as it's something I really lack experience with. I totally agree with your comments on both the artifacts and the legendaries. I will say Tomb of Sargeras was a lot more enjoyable on Heroic, for sure! I really enjoyed beating Kil'jaeden. I think I'm critical of it because of what it did to me and my guild during our Mythic progression. I'm really glad to hear you enjoyed it though. Thank you for watching and commenting!
@@edd_TV Pretty much everyone disliked ToS on mythic, because Blizzard are just obssessed with making it hard for the world first guilds, but still there are 4 difficulties, it makes sense for the highest one to be torture. I personally stopped Mythic raiding current tiers after Emerald Nightmare due to lack of time, but they weren't fun for me anymore too, as they required too much time and effort, while not focusing on being fun.
@@rattlehead999 Yeah, that is still so clear to see with Dragonflight today too. The amount of nerfs that consistently come in is getting incredibly disheartening, and I think Mythic needs a serious look at. I would personally campaign for an introduction to 10-man mythic, as I feel that my time in both Firelands/Throne of Thunder in a 10 man setting was really great, and I'd like to see something like that again. But you are bang on the money. The barrier to entry for Mythic generally speaking too is just exhausting, let alone all the admin/organisation that comes with it. I'm contemplating a video on it, but you are absolutely right. I think had I just done Heroic ToS, I would have had a completely different view on it.
@@edd_TV Hell yes. 10 Man groups are the best and I miss them so much. 10 Man groups means that everyone is engaged during the fight outside of just global mechanics and it's much nicer to be with 10 people than 14-20(including Normal/Heroic), communication is easy and you get to know the people better. I miss 10 Man in WotLK and especially Cata and MoP, times were great. The main problem is that Blizzard care about the top 1-3% of the player base and the bottom 10% more than the other 87-89% in the middle. IMO they should make Normal Raid difficulty be between LFR and where Normal is now, so that it becomes the PuG difficulty. A modern day equivalent to WotLK's 10 Man Normal or MoP's Flex(without the auto-grouping of course). Heroic is fine where it is and Mythic should be made so it doesn't have to be nerfed, they should make a Mythic plus raid difficulty only for raid first clearers. And it would be cool if they scaled old raids(from Cata onward) to Normal(or pre-Normal) ilvls so every patch we have decades worth of raiding content, you just still get to do 1 raid a week or 1 old raid + the current raid. Also I think that raids shouldn't reward higher ilvl than Normal Raid, instead give you +1 gem socket on Heroic and +2 gem sockets on Mythic, while having exclusive better looking armor, exclusive pets, toys, achievements, etc for those difficulties. That would solve the power creep that makes them stat squish every other expansion.
@@rattlehead999 Very well written. I wholeheartedly agree with you. The scaling of old raids would be a huge win for Blizzard. There are so many elements they could take from FFXIV to help preserve their game better, as so much of it is left to rust, and it's really sad. Thanks for taking the time to write that. That was a really good read.
Thanks! The story recap was mostly taken from a Reddit post which you can view in the description, so I would have read it from that! I appreciate it though!
I know it's a long shot for Blizz to do it, but if there is a Legion Classic... RIP my life. I miss this expac so much. Truly a masterpiece in terms of gameplay, story, fantasy, etc.
It's a long shot, for sure, but not impossible! I think MoP has to be a guarantee now Cata is on the way. WoD will be tricky, but I think with a really fast-paced patch cadence, it might make a better experience overall. People sit around in Dalaran in Classic Wrath all the time, so sitting in the Garrison can't be that bad! It seems to be a raid-logging game at this point anyway, so I think WoD may actually get received a bit better. Maybe more people will check out Challenge Modes, or maybe they could even revamp things. I think WoD could be a really cool idea if they were happy to make some changes for it. It seems crazy to even type the words 'Classic Legion', but SO many in the comments want it!
@@edd_TV the only thing I’m worried about, and what I think blizz must be considering, is the “when do we stop?” I don’t know why, but I think MoP might be the last classic era we get
@@Xtra.chrispy9 I think stopping after Mists would make a lot of sense. WoD is very controversial, and I'm interesting in seeing how well Cataclysm does because it's quite polarising. It would be brave of them to consider WoD, but I think it's important to think of players who never got to play these expansions at the time and really want to continue their journey with Classic so they can experience everything in its purest form (somewhat). I think stopping after MoP is a very safe bet, but we'll have to wait and see!
I definitely have fond memories of Legion. Its where my current main started, that being Outlaw Rogue. I remember the lead up and waiting to hear on the spec fantasy and just theorizing so much about the weapons and how to get the weapon skins. Fencer's Reach from the Mage Tower is still the default weapon skin I use. Legion just has such magnificent stories to tell and if Classic ever got to Legion, I would so be involved day 1.
well it was far better than MoP, WoD, BFA, Shadowlands and Dragonflight, so it has to count for something right ? how can modern blizz drop the ball so hard after striking gold ?
I think it's possible to take positives from all of those expansions, although Shadowlands would be extremely difficult in the eyes of many. I think in a way, you may have answered your own question: 'Striking gold'. I think greed is what really got them. Whether we want to point the finger at Activision, Bobby Kotick or whoever it may be, it's clear that Blizzard's goals were to generate as much money as possible, as opposed to the love and care that was going into their product like we saw in Legion and even before that.
I don't remember a zone making me feel the way Suramar did. I can remember checking out Gilneas back in the Cataclysm Beta and being blown away by that at the time. It was so advanced to anything else we had seen previously, but Suramar? Incredible.
Legion was what can be when they can take their time to actually flesh out a expansion. And now they are going to even decrease the development cycle...
That's a very good point. Expansions will be coming at a faster rate, which is a bit alarming. I don't see why they feel the need to rush things out. I think they should adopt the same philosophy as FFXIV, where if you feel that you're done with the game, you can dip out and take breaks. If you're going to do something, do it right.
@@edd_TV Honestly I think this is, because they can already cash out on the "early launch" epic edition (80% more than base) and if they can sell 3 expansions with 80% more revenue each in the time span of what would normally be 2 expanions, they will do.
@@dancingbear1881 The Epic edition is genuinely sickening. I think gating early access behind something like that is so bad. And they try and palm it off by saying that you get a boost for a character in the base edition. It's just not good enough, and a poor excuse.
@@edd_TV 90% of people who never bought anything higher than the base edition will be "forced" by their peers to do so and that's EXACTLY what Blizzard has in mind. That is IMHO predatory. I often hear "but you get mounts/pets/transmog also", but most people do not buy hero or epic editions for that. Most people get the base version (or maybe used to get the base version).
@@dancingbear1881 I haven't purchased it yet, but I'm likely going to purchase the epic edition for the early access. It's extremely predatory. I think if it was just mounts, a hearthstone toy or whatever else, I''d say fair enough. But gating the actual game from players is just really low.
An amazing expansion with amazing things in it. I am also glad i'm not the only one that still says "An Illusion! What are you hiding?" from time to time.
Absolutely loved Legion. I levelled every single class and spec to legion just to experience all the artifact weapon questlines and new (usually incredible spell). Never felt stronger as a Shaman, both enh and ele, and had so much fun raid healing as a monk and played feral druid simply to look amazing with the new cat forms. (boy do i regret not doing mage tower for the cat skins) Stormkeeper with chain lightning was insane on mythic + Suramar was absolutely stunning, had a lot of variety despite the similar aesthetic. You could tell where you were in the city just by your immediate surroundings. I spent so many hours there each day and loved the pace of the quests that came out over time and lead to the manasaber mount. Made my first million gold by collecting starlight rose herbs. My only issue was that Broken Shore and Argus felt like the same thing twice, and of course, the legendary system. I was fortunate enough to get great luck with my main legends, but witnessed and had terrible luck on my alt. 9/10 expansion in my opinion
I think eventually they will/should offer the old skins for the Mage Tower back. As conflicting as I feel about gating things, it just doesn't make sense to anymore. It's like a badge of honor that nobody really cares about. I'm sorry you missed out on them, especially those druid skins. They are so cool! I totally agree about the Broken Shore and Argus. My plan originally was to create sections for them in the video, but the video was already getting too long. I think that eventually it made WoW feel quite formulaic too with other zones that followed suit in retail today. I think 9/10 is a great rating. If the legendary system and titanforging wasn't an issue? It's a 10, all day! Glad to help bring back some memories for you, and thank you for commenting and watching!
My main problem with Legion's story is that its clearly rushed to be over with. Legion expansion shouldve ended with taking down Kiljaeden and Argus shouldve been a completely another expansion, since it is a whole new planet, not some small zone on Azeroth and who wouldve not loved a 2nd expansion like that. Some of the main npc deaths, like Tirion for example, felt like they were killed off just to create an impactful moment rather than let them die in a way that makes more sense story wise.
I felt the same about Nazjatar and Ny'alotha in BFA. I feel both of those deserved to have their own expansions. The fact that Nazjatar was simply one zone and Ny'alotha a raid made me really sad. Argus as its own expansion would have been incredible.
You nailed it on the head. Class stories and orderhalls gave me a reason to play every single class. Artifact weapons and skins gave me a reason to play every single spec and I became good enough to complete all 36 mage tower challenges. The Mage Tower was the best solo challenge content inexperienced. Rage inducing but when i conquered each one I got such a rush. Legion was the best but also not perfect.
Completing all 36 challenges is crazy impressive. Great job! I agree with you regarding the content, I think it was brilliant. I hope they can find a way of delivering something similar again in the future! I'm glad you can acknowledge Legion's faults and still praise it. Thank you for watching!
Before getting to my personal thoughts: Great video, especially with touching on the lore of the expansion. I know you said you got a lot of it from a post, but you still mentioned it and explained it pretty well for people who may not have been present or paid attention to the lore of Legion, or for people like me, who read all the quest text they could, but have forgotten most of it over the past seven years. As for my opinion: Legion was full of great content - I even liked ToS and CoEN, tbh, though I despised Seat of the Triumvirate(probably because it took until 7.3.2 for people to start actually learning the dungeon) - but was marred by a few things you mentioned: - Legiondaries being 100% random until I think 7.3 the vendor was added, and even then, it wasn't until 7.3.2 that you could more easily target specific legendaries, to the point where CE guilds had people re-roll the same class and spec if they didn't get one or both of their BiS legendaries in their first four drops. This took WAY too long to remedy. I started normal EN as a ret paladin and only finally got my BiS leggos right before they changed Chain of Thrayn(my first leggo) from a heal on someone you use Blessing of Freedom on to a DPS-increasing leggo... then they introduced the legendary rings from Legionfall, and I ended up switching to ele shaman for M ToS and Antorus. (And somehow, got 9 legendaries - including my BiS for ST ele, AoE ele, and enhancement - in two and a half weeks real-life.) - The way M+ keystones functioned until I believe 7.2 or 7.2.5, with the depleting function. I remember early in the expansion, there would be people that got their rocks off by taking a group of four, pugging one person with a decently high keystone, and all dropping party as soon as the keystone is inserted, inting the key. - After this was remedied, the Legion dungeons were great for M+, and I honestly hated M+ afterwards. The Legion dungeons generally felt like you were just clearing the entire dungeon while being as effective as possible; BfA and SL(didn't play DF) M+ dungeons feel far more about figuring out the best M+ route and having the best comp you can possibly have before entering the dungeon, while avoiding as many mobs as possible while still hitting 100%. Previously, I was thinking I was just bad in Legion M+ and killed way more than I needed to, but when the Felsong server dropped and had the Legion M+ dungeons active, I found out, yes, most dungeons have you killing almost all the trash for 100%, very little skipping, and wasn't anywhere NEAR as reliant on comp. Many of the BfA and SL dungeons were just not good at all, as they felt they were designed primarily for the MDI, and anyone else was secondary. (Kinda like mythic raids have been for almost their entire existence, with EN being a bit of an outlier because that was just a really easy raid.) - The complete rework to, and purging of, so many specs - along with locking almost all abilities to a spec, not a class - honestly didn't feel _terrible_ at level 100 or 110, and just got better with buffing your artifact weapon, to the point where a fully buffed artifact weapon had some classes play the most fun they ever have, imo(here's looking at you, Arms & Prot Warrior, Disc Priest, and Ele Shaman; and while I'm not personally a fan of the post-WoD version of this spec, I'll throw in ~~Void~~ Shadow Priest, because of how much so many players loved the Voidform/Insanity mechanic), just to remove nearly the ENTIRETY of this borrowed power in the BfA pre-patch. (Not to mention the disappearance of tier sets - a form of borrowed power people didn't really complain about - so we lost even _more_ going into BfA) until the end of SL They added more types of borrowed power, almost all of which were a far bigger misstep than Artifact weapons EVER were. - World quests, on paper weren't too obtrusive in Legion as simply a different way to give players dailies, but with new ones spawning in different zones every hour or two, giving different types of reward, and, of course, Titanforging, world quests became one of the largest chores in WoW since, in all honesty, probably getting attuned to everything up to and including Hyjal in TBC back in 2007. This doesn't feel _as_ impactful in Legion, as a lot of world quests were either extremely quick, or gave a sizeable amount of AP/gold/crafting mats, but "World Quest 2.0" in BfA and SL is a complete slog. - Lastly, being 100% selfish here: Ret paladin's Blade of Wrath talent starting the xpac as a Holy Power generator that left a 6 sec Holy damage DoT on the target - I loved this talent... for about the 5-6 weeks it was in the game. Then, they turned Blade of Wrath into a talent where auto-attacks had a 25% chance to reset the CD of Blade of Justice, which felt a LOT less fun to me. I could expand to make this less selfish by bringing up classes/specs I wasn't playing and didn't experience firsthand - a friend that I raided with in NIghthold, before he found a different guild with better raid times for his job - stopped playing his frost DK when they rotated talents to nerf Breath builds and the suggest play was the machine-scythe build - but this comment is already way too long for handfuls of anecdotes. All this having been said: I still loved Legion for the most part, but I wouldn't play Legion Classic. I already tried to get back into Legion when the Felsong server dropped(progressing from 7.0.3 to 7.3.5, though its running on a 7.3.5 client, with all the tweaks to classes, specs, items, etc. that were active at 7.3.5), and while I find much of Legion's content to hold up just as well as seven and a half years ago(can't believe it has been that long), I'm just not interested in all the weekly(and to a lesser extent, daily) chores and arbitrary time-gating that became so prominent in Legion, but was amplified a thousand fold in BfA and SL. I don't know if I'm less patient, less addicted to the game in _any_ fashion, don't want to go from a fully-fleshed-out artifact weapon to nothing at the end of the cycle, don't want to go back to doing raids that are designed with DBM, BigWigs, WeakAuras in mind, to the point of being horribly designed without the add-ons shouting at you, or just don't want to re-do all those chores and deal with the layers upon layers of RNG again, but it's simply not an attractive prospect. If I could just jump to 110, have at least instantly maxed Artifact Knowledge, artificial time-gating was removed, Titanforging didn't exist and Warforging maxed at +5 ilvl and/or tertiary stats, and I had no problem raiding just normal or heroic *at most* - which I've not had the resolve from EN in 7.0 to CN in 9.0; even if I wasn't enjoying it, I still wanted to push for CE - then I _might_ consider playing Legion Classic, but after quitting retail(and the game provided through Blizzard overall until SoD) shortly before 9.0.5, but none of this would realistically happen, and I'd be bored with the game really quick if I was trying to avoid mythic raiding. (Sorry for the overly long comment.)
No apology necessary for such a long and detailed content! I appreciate you taking the time to both watch the video and write this up! Thank you so much for your kind words, I really appreciate that. You make a lot of valid points and I agree with you on pretty much all of it. As much as I love Legion, I'm not sure if I would do a Classic version of it either, because I lived it, you know? TBC is very close to my heart, but if I didn't come back for TBC or Wrath, I don't think anything will ever get me back into Classic iterations. I don't think we would have the same experience if we went back and did it all again, it's impossible. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and feelings!
Legion was amazing, it felt so monumental in it's scale that to be honest there was no way but downward afterwards when it came to lore and class fantasy. I have never felt so rewarded playing my class after that anymore
One thing not mentioned is the PvP of legion. In my opinion, one of the best expansions for PvP in my opinion. Many specializations were strong and the ilvl scaling was very balanced, causing someone to have 1% increased stats for about every 10 ilvls in pvp. By the end of the xpac some people had 16% stat increase but everyone loaded in with the same stats. It was done away with (somewhat) after legion. Overall one of my favorite expansions. Great video. Push out more and you'll blow up! :).
I do mention in the beginning that I wouldn't be able to mention PvP, as I wouldn't be able to give a clear evaluation on it. I could have done some research on it but I think it would have been tough because I wasn't having those experiences on a personal level. I'm glad that PvP delivered for you though! Thank you for explaining how it was. Thank you for your kind words, and thanks for watching!
I agree, if not those then something very similar. I think class identity and fantasy is so important to players, and it's something that needs to be preserved.
I have always said that my two favorite expansions were Cata and Legion, cata for some very special reasons and possibly some nostalgia as well, but Legion I remember clearly and I loved it.
It's quite refreshing to hear somebody speak so highly of Cataclysm. I think Cata gets a lot of unjustified hate. I have some good memories from it! Are you going to play Classic Cataclysm? I'm glad you enjoy Legion as much as I do!
The class halls and the stories were absolutely amazing. It felt like the whole expansion was massive. I loved it. The worst part of a nice expansion is when you get sad when the next one drops.
I think it really is a case of 'you don't know what you've got until it's gone' for many. I absolutely loved and appreciated Legion every single day. I genuinely thought it was wonderful and I didn't take it for granted at all. It's so sad that the way levelling is designed in retail, you can never truly have this experience if you weren't an active player at the time. Glad to hear you had a great time with it too!
i will never forget how fun mistweaver was in pvp in legion. There was the pvp perk which turned pretty much all healing skills instant cast while channeling soothing mist. Nobody was really using it and because nobody was using it. it was so overtuned. You could heal alone about 3-4 of healers amount in battlegrounds. It was probably the most fun time i've had in the game period.
I regret not getting into PvP in Legion, but the truth is I'm just not very good at it. That sounds epic though. I'm glad to hear you had a great time in Legion!
Honestly, they killed mistweaver when they removed they mana tea and chi resources interaction. Nowadays it feels like any other healer. Back in WoD (yea i know, but i had a good time in that one) it felt like playing a combo healer with actual mana management.
Legion was the expansion that finally forced me to get good at the game. Just a quick note, Sephuz`s Secret was actually probably the strongest legendary for Prot Paladin`s as simply starting a pull with Avengers shield was guareteed to proc it, so you basically had Heroism at the start of each pull for 10 seconds, plus 70% increased movement speed, and on longer pulls could proc it again after 30 seconds.
It did feel like there was such an increase in skill. Mythic+ was really good for testing and pushing your limits. Oh yeah, Sephuz's was very good for Shadow Priest too if I'm not mistaken! I just remember it was full of groans and moans back in the day, so I thought I'd have a bit of fun with it. I do recall it getting buffed and actually being viable though. I think both Sephuz and Prydaz are often really bad scapegoats of Legion. That sounds pretty fun as a Prot Paladin! Thank you for watching and commenting!
I quit legion VERY shortly after hitting max level. The Artifact Weapon, Suramar, Order Hall Campaign, Profession Quests, it overwhelmed me. I came back for BfA prepatch and Argus was fun af
I can understand that. There was A LOT going on. I really liked Argus too. I was contemplating making a section for Argus but felt the video was already getting too long!
Legion to me was the number one expansion I've ever played and I've played since 2008. Wrath is a close second, but when it comes to Legion, the entire narrative of the game was phenomenal. I still hold the Broken Shore scenario as the greatest world event or expansion launch event that I've ever partaken in. I got together with my good WoW friends at the time and when it was done, I said to everyone. "Guys, I have no idea how we're going to pull this off." That's the only time I ever got stumped in WoW, especially being a lore nerd. The Broken Isles were absolutely incredible. Every zone to this day is perfection, Val'sharah is still my favorite zone in the entirety of the game. The Order halls were complete perfection. The Class Campaigns associated with them were perfection, especially since its the only time they had you use your own kit and class moves to progress them differently. (Finally going beyond the Emerald Dream portals as a Druid, Mass Dispelling Tentacles as a Priest, Blinking through Forcefields as a Mage. Using your Enslave Demon to trick Legion guards as a Warlock, Stealth as a Rogue to bypass hazards. Even the Death Knights allowing you to be a Machiavellian styled villain... etc etc.) Its the little things like that. You just didn't have it anymore once BFA came out. It was the only time we really saw such amazing class fantasy. In my honest opinion, they never really should've moved away from it. A class campaign could've been in every expansion following it and the Order Halls could still be relevant. I really don't miss the RNG legendaries and the titanforging, but everything else in the expansion was amazing. It's gonna take a lot of things to really get there again with WoW, but they DO have a standard and it really kind of sucks how Blizzard and Ion are convinced that Legion ruined the game for them, because to me and a lot of other players, it was PEAK Modern WoW. I really hope they one day revisit elements from Legion to make a great WoW expansion and I hope the World Soul Saga does just that.
Great comment! I can understand why Blizzard and ion think that Legion created a dark path for WoW, and it is sadly true. But they are the makers of their own madness. Legion enabled Blizzard to really go for broke with borrowed power and artifact grinds, and allowed WoW to become twisted and contorted until players no longer recognised it. Legion was the bullet, but Blizzard were the ones who pulled the trigger. It didn't have to be this way. Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts!
One thing that saddens me about Legion is that we missed out on a whole expansion's worth of weapon appearances. Yeah you had all of the artifact appearances, but they all looked fundamentally similar, bar some of the hidden appearances, and mostly were way over the top
It's a very valid criticism. Weapons are a huge draw for a lot of people and really important. It did feel very strange having the same weapon for the entire expansion. I think the artifact weapons are quite polarising for a number of reasons, but mainly the one you mention. I wasn't a big fan of receiving the Ashbringer personally, but I know some players who absolutely loved it. It felt like the artifact weapons were a true shift in our stature as characters. We had gone from being just an adventurer to Highlord's, Deathlord's and so on. And some people just want to be an 'adventurer', helping out and doing what they can.
I wasn’t allowed to play WOW as a kid, but when I got my PC last year my bf got me into it and as a first time player of Legion (and mmos in general, I grew up playing rpgs and jrpgs), I’ve really enjoyed it so far!
If Legion hadn't pruned most spells, it would've been up there with wotlk. I get they wanted to streamline the game and get rid of spells you seldom used, but that's where the class fantasy comes for me, having a huge variety of skills, passives etc. Seeing the bar so baren, just put me off. Narratevely, it was amazing, having to obtain the most important weapons, to wield against the Burning Legion and being the head of your respective class faction, just made you feel like you were really a main character, not just an adventurer, lending a helping hand with killing 8 boars. A small thing I really appreciated were the hidden artifact skins, having to wander Azeroth and revisit old raids and such, tied to your artifact's history, to find hidden chambers and questlines and obtaining it, was amazing. Namely Apocalypse and ofc the Ashbringer, having to do the old myths of obtaining the pure Ashbringer in vanilla, however tedious that was. All things considered, Legion was the best we had and have had for a long while and I would love to experience it all again.
I loved Legion, class hall, mage tower, suramar were so fun. I am a casual wow player, I've never invested godly amount of hours into the game, but I do play semi consistently and I enjoy the game for the feeling of inhabiting another world. Legion really got that right imo, and lot of the content was solo friendly. Mage tower was a challenge I felt I could accomplish in my own time and since it forced an ilevel it always felt like an accomplishment. The artifact system imo felt so rewarding, especially the transmog. Dragonflight and Pandaria are the closest wow has come to this.
Glad to hear it! I agree with all of your points. I think Mists is so hugely slept on, and I really hope if/when it makes it to Classic WoW, people can have a new-found appreciation for it. I can't speak highly enough about my time in Throne of Thunder and Siege of Orgrimmar. Thank you for sharing your experiences and thanks for watching!
They need to make the class order halls come back. The class fantasy was at its peak during legion. Unique location just for your class, unique mounts, spells and items. It was just so cool.
I've played WoW since the very beginning, and while I will ALWAYS have fond memories of playing Vanilla to Wrath with my friends, I agree that Legion was definitely one of the best expansions of the game. It came out at a perfect time when all of my friends were free to play again, and it really felt like old times. The Class Halls, the weapons, every zone of the expansion - it was all excellent. Legion going completely off the rails in terms of damage was also a ton of fun, and it felt great to be an ultra-powerful person. None of the expansions since have given me that feeling of pure power that Legion did, and that's a shame. Legion also came out the same year that Overwatch did, and Blizzard was very well regarded and everyone loved them at the time. I imagine Legion is also fondly remembered because it was the last expansion released before all of the controversies came out that destroyed Blizzard's reputation.
All of my friends came back for it too. A lot of us got really deflated and quit during WoD, which I do regret because Blackrock Foundry was genuinely great, but I felt really tired of playing. Legion revitalised everything. The ultra power was fun too and it felt valid because we were now these great figures of the game: the Highlord, the Deathlord and so on. It made sense for the game to get a bit crazy (but we did pay for this dearly in the BFA levelling experience). That's a great point too. I think Blizzard were still considered very respected at the time and there were no controversies and it still felt like they cared about the playerbase, as opposed to just wanting to line their pockets which seems to prevalent now, with the amount of boosts, mounts on the shop and so on. Really great post, thanks for watching!
Its insane to me how much everyone loved class halls and they just... totally dropped the idea of them. Especially with the focus of War Within being so focused on class flavor with the hero talents.
Legion got me to play every class in some form. Every class had complexity you could slowly spec into, while having an easier to understand core. Classes were just intuitive in general.
I'm not much of an alt guy, but even I had to in Legion because I felt so interested in the lore with the Order Halls. It was primarily Holy Paladin and Brewmaster Monk for me. I do agree with you though, everything felt interesting! I can't speak too much in terms of balance or power, but everything certainly felt like it brought something to the table and there was fun to be had.
I think the biggest shame with suramar is that they have yet to do something similar in these past few expansions. The story progression and involvement made it feel super epic and involved. Gave max level more to do with story and questing even without experience gain it felt awesome.
Man when you go over the plot of legion like this (a lot of it you had to be a completionist to see in full, but it was legit all THERE unlike the other expansions we all complain about having it in external books instead) it sounds amazing for WoW. I don't think any other expansion ever had such a completely coherent plotline that had a pretty sound beginning and end with some really strong story beats. Specifically around Nighthold and how it all ties together into that last pillar and how you need to learn about, and solved the issues of, an entire culture. It felt like it would fit perfectly as a well done single player RPG which is the best praise WoW could ever get. I also used to think of ways the Artifact Weapon thing could have worked going forward as a long term system. There were really two things that mattered when it came to "looting" new weapons. That was getting a skin, and the occasional unique effect on them. They solved the former with unlockable skins, and I guess the passives on them was supposed to be the latter but didn't quite fit that. They could have tied both of these to relics easily. Loot relics, have new ones you introduce in expansions occasionally unlock new skins, also have rare relics with cool passives similar to ones that appear on dropped weapons now. Also implement secondary stats as part of the relics so you didn't just have a set 2 stats forever. Boom, then the weapons would function forever.
I think that's my only crticism storywise. Like you say, unless you were a completionist and had various characters, you wouldn't get the full picture. Like I mention Tirion Fordring's death being forgettable, and that's true if you didn't play a Paladin or a Death Knight for example. It's a double-edged sword I think. It's really cool for the classes to feel important and get special treatment, but other classes may miss out on big moments because of it. I hard agree with you when it comes to storyline being kept inside books and such too. I don't recall if there was a book released prior to Legion. I imagine it was the Illidan novel. But it didn't feel as though you needed it to understand. Like War Crimes for example, if you haven't read that and you go straight into WoD, you just have to roll with the punches and you probably think 'What the hell is going on here?!' I like your thinking with the Artifact Weapons! Thank you for watching and your comment!
@@edd_TV It was the first expansion where my mythic raid team stayed together the entire time! never lost a person. no one ever missed a raid! it was all that good beginnning to end! been playing since week 1 classic! and that was the first time the game had enough well thought out content/dangling carrots it kept everyone going with alts and appearances! and grinding artifacts!
@@paullowe8437 That must have been great. I think Legion was the longest I was with the same people for too, but sadly we all split off into different directions after Tomb of Sargeras. Sounds like you had a nice group of people!
Great video mate, well done. I loved Legion but not at first. I went into Legion from an underwhelming WoD where I mostly just did arena and PvP and was maining shadowpriest. I loathed the shadowpriest retooling in the first part of Legion and was very salty about it. I switched to my unholy DK and did the final mythic raiding I've ever done for the first two raids, it was a blast and Nighthold was amazing! It was the last expansion we had a full guild and two raid teams, pvp team etc. (BfA saw us lose half our players and then SL was the nail in the coffin for our guild). I did love Tomb of Sargeras though!!! We had a blast clearing that except for KJ which took us 80 pulls on Heroic hahaha Admittedly I was done mythic raiding by ToS so I never felt that pain. Legion is top three WoW expansions for me, the positive vastly outweighed the negative and IMO was the end of the golden age of WoW, its been all down hill from there.
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it. Two of my good friends both played Shadow Priest too and were obsessed with Surrender to Madness in Emerald Nightmare. Our guild used to call them the 'God Squad'. I think they felt the same as you do. One of my friends also got really unlucky and ended up having to off-heal some of our fights in Mythic, and after dumping so much artifact power into his Shadow artifact, I think that was the final straw for him. It's so easy to acknowledge the game isn't perfect, but I think the good just outshines the bad in this case. You sound like you had some great experiences in Legion, and thank you for sharing them and watching!
Legion was the best time for me as a pvper. Gear templates totally changed the game and allowed me to play and experiment with all my alts on a semi competitive level without having to grind for weeks to get gear!
It's hard for people to undeerstand how good Legion was because WoD and BFA were so bad. Legion was truly great. M+ was incredible, class fantasy was amaazing, and every spec had at least one super strong patch.
I think you really have to remove yourself from what came afterwards. Legion is absolutely guilty for the sins of both BFA and Shadowlands, but I think if you choose not to think about them and try live in that moment that was solely 'Legion', it was very good.
Vengeance had the most ridiculous burst dps of any tank spec with fiery brand, not really a tank-specific thing, but it was unique and very fun, especially for world pvp. It also had a lot of cc options that felt great in 15+ dungeons. Havoc was.. the best dps class at soloing heroics, haha, I remember queueing as tank, switching to havoc and telling the healer to respec dps as well. The mobility was also amazing for doing solo content.
As I was ranting about BfA I must say that legion will be the goat in my mind even above wrath. Music of Suramar or Lion's Rest makes my heart hurt literally. This nostalgia is like a drug.
I very much agree with you. I think had Legion been the standalone era of Borrowed Power and chores, it would have been held in even higher regard than it is today. Legion has a bit of a hangover because of what players had to go through with both BFA and Shadowlands. Before those, everything was new: borrowed power, mythic+ etc, it was a novelty. It was above and beyond anything we had ever seen before, and I don't know if they will ever top Legion personally. I hope they do, but I just can't see it.
I vividly remember, during the last day before the BfA prepatch, telling myself that Legion was the best expansion in WoWs history. I also felt a sense of dread because I was not a fan of the premise of BfA. I was right on both fronts. I miss Legion and hated BfA.
This hits hard. I don't think I hated the premise of BFA initially but I definitely resonate with the sense of dread you're talking about. The levelling experience in BFA was so bad too; as you gained levels, you grew weaker. You had to throw your artifact weapon in the bank and eventually stop wearing your legendary after a certain level. Azerite just couldn't compare with the power levels we previously had, and it was such a gruelling experience.
Legion is king. Only time since I started playing in Cata where I considered joining a guild and scheduling raids. Decided to pass college instead. Stopped playing a week into shadowshit and just got back in. Dragon riding and the new pandaria thing have made me hopeful again
Who knows what may happen when he eventually returns! These days I'm thinking maybe the child of light and shadow is Arator (the son of Turalyon and Alleria) but I'm pretty sure it is Illidan. It's just my wandering mind more than anything else. But yeah, watch this space when Illidan comes back! Thank you for watching!
Thinking about the last three expansions compared to legion. Legion was better than i remembered. I did mage tower on every class and spec that i played. Which is all except hunter. I got every secret artifact appearance on every spec. I did the balance of power questline solo on my druid at the end of the expansion. Meaning i farmed heroic emerald nightmare as a solo player. I was doing millions of dps, on any class i played, I had done all of the class hall story lines. Done every raid and mythic dungeon. Did all the secret events for mounts and pets etc. Gambled my nethershards. I did the world pvp events to get my transmog sets. I even got the pink hippogryph mount in the first week on my enhancement shaman main at the time wielding the doom hammer.
I would agree that Legion was WoW's best expansion. I recently paid out $$ for a factory-sealed collector's edition. I also agree with you that Suramar is WoW's best-ever zone, but I was surprised to hear that navigating it on the ground was something you considered a drawback. The gameplay of Suramar only made sense if you had to sneak in on the ground. Flying completely trivialized it. The residents of Suramar, both elf and demon, apparently subscribe to the motto "Don't look up!" Sneaking around in your disguise, watching for guards, taking to the rooftops (my favorite as a demon hunter - felt like Batman)... These were what made Suramar fun and challenging.
Great job on getting a collector's edition! I had no issue with Suramar on foot personally, but I know a lot of people that really struggled with it. I loved how immersive and RPG it all felt. It really felt like a bustling city and of course like you said, having to play the sneaky role was just so much fun.
This video was epic. I remember doing the death knight campaign and feeling like even if i normally didnt care to dive into the story i was very excited about it and felt involved in it other than alot of other storylines that was previously. Legion is probably one of my best memories of wow but the friends i made in bfa and the improvement i made as a player and understanding for the game makes them a tie for me. If i had what i had in bfa the legion would truly take the cake for me.
Thank you for saying so! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed it! I'm kind of a reverse to you. Legion was peak for me in terms of friendship and such. BFA is when my friends finally decided to call it a day, sadly. That being said, I did have fun in BFA! I have made a BFA video too if you're interested in that. Thanks for watching and sharing your thoughts!
@@edd_TV I'm right on to watch that! Alot of my friends quit in bfa aswell but I made new friends along the way and reconnected with other old friends that I played with in legion but got separated into different guilds and somehow those friends also found each other so it was kind of a new friend group merged with new and old friends of everyone which almost felt like destiny!
I started wow because of the class fantasy. an expansion purely devoted to that was definitely my favorite expansion and hope they do it again sometime. my only gripe is alt unfriendliness and the legendary acquisition in the beginning.
That's great to hear. I feel the same too. I know people will say they preferred other iterations or felt that other expansions had better examples of class fantasy, but I don't think it needs to be a competition. Legion is definitely guilty in terms of pruning classes and such, but Blizzard put SO much work into the artifacts, the quests and the order halls. I thoroughly loved it, and I'm glad to hear you felt the same way!
Yeah that's a very valid criticism. I got really lucky with my legendaries, but I had so many friends who didn't get theirs until it was way too late. It was honestly such a blunder by Blizzard and it was a shame they didn't address it sooner. It left a pretty bad stain on its reputation.
I didn't play during Legion but from what i can see, the only reason AP grind didn't feel so bad was because people were distracted by the amazing story and all the other new things. Once you get used to them and start repeating them over and over again, you start noticing the bad sides more.
I think that was definitely a factor, but I also think you felt more powerful as you continued to gather the power and that was a huge draw (at least for me). Doing all those chores in BFA and the rewards/power gains we received didn't feel even half as good as what we received in Legion, and it felt like we had to participate in twice or three times as much content as Legion. It was a lot. Putting points in the artifact tree in Legion genuinely felt empowering and it reminded me of levelling in classic a little and selecting talent points. I felt my character getting stronger and that made me want to do more. I think the fact that WoD was so barren and lifeless, people were quite happy to have things to do again! I very much agree with you, this shouldn't have been the ideology going forward because BFA and Shadowlands suffered massively from it. I think had Legion been the only expansion it would have been received even better, and in turn BFA and Shadowlands might have turned out better too! Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
I don't think Dragonflight has been terrible compared to the likes of BFA or Shadowlands which most people would condemn, but I don't think anything can compare to what Legion was at the time or how it transformed WoW. A lot of WoW we see today stems from Legion: Mythic+, World Quests etc. For better or worse it was hugely influential on the game, and I agree with you. It was serious damage control after how disappointing Warlords of Draenor was. They needed Legion to be successful and threw everything they had at it, which is a bit sad when you think about it. They should want all their products to be the best they can possibly be, and not just acting out of desperation. it was very clear how much effort, love and time went into Legion and that should be the case for every expansion. Here's hoping The War Within is the start of something great.
Legion was my favourite, the story was top tier, although it was borrowed power we at least felt powerful especially with the enemies we were facing it felt like we were fighting a war. Would love to see a video like this one BfA because imo 8.0 to 8.2.5 were fantastic, like legion had the borrowed power and M+ chest issues but the story, zones and PvE instances prior to Ny'alotha were legion level, it was just a shame it ended with two reused zones and a half assed raid.
I think Mechagon and Nazjatar really saved BFA for me personally. I was miserable prior to that patch. The essences for Azerite were great too, but they really needed to be in on launch. You aren't the first person to comment asking for a BFA video! It's something I'll consider!
One thing that seems to get forgotten a bit is how the lore is honestly kinda borked. Val'sharah just raised SO MANY questions regarding the issue of Nordrassil, the druids' activity, and night elven civilization in general (were the druids in Val'sharah just chilling while Archimonde torched Ashenvale? Is Moonglade is some provincial regional office of druidism? Did they just chill out while Malfurion chased Illidan across the broken Isles in the Frozen Throne campaign?). The Warden jail in Azsuna has similar bizarre implications (so the Wardens, an organization set up in the aftermath of the Breaking to hold Illidan and some dangerous demonic entities chained up, just apparently just sailed across the fucking ocean to set up a massive underground facility for no discernible reason and then when Maiev later arrived on the Broken Islands to chase Illidan THEY MADE NO CONTACT WHATSOEVER.)
I think they just expect you to overlook things at times, or things are told in books and not the actual game itself, or sometimes they probably just hope you forget about it. I'm trying to mend fences with the lore at the minute. I'm still really miffed with Shadowlands, but I'm trying to just hope they can find a way of turning it into something positive. But your questions here are all valid, and reading them does make you think how some things are just swept under the carpet.
Legion was amazing content, I loved the leveling, the different zones, the dailys and most of the raids. The only thing that drove me crazy for the first 10 months was, that my main class (Moonkin) needed certain legendarys to be really useful. Sadly I had no chance to stay in my progress guild without them and got first benched for someone that had the luck and then a month later I got kicked out of the roster. So yeah. Overall, Legion was fun, but the Legendary Drop Rate system needed a rework.
That's really sad about your guild, but it was sadly the nature of the beast with Legion. It's a fault of Blizzard for tying the legendaries to RNG, btu also the playerbase for having that attitude. I'm glad you still had a great time all the same! They absolutely should have tackled the legendary system earlier, and if we're to see a Classic iteration someday, that will have to be addressed.
I loved how it made all of the different ways to play relevant again. Everything you did added to progression.
The last 3 or so months of Legion were the most fun I've ever had at the end of an expansion. That's when the Mage Tower was up all the time. Worked up a plan and got all 36 appearances for the artifacts. Nothings come close since. @@edd_TV

I have no desire to do the whole "WoW Classic" experience, but I will make an exception if Blizz does a Legion Classic.
Glad you loved it as much as I did! I have only dabbled in Vanilla Classic as well as SoD, but a Classic Legion would be interesting!
I agree with all of this, for me the literal only downside to Legion was the random legendary system, if they allowed players to have some or full control over that system it would be perfect in my eyes.
@@_Augie It was a massive blunder, undoubtedly. If they fixed both the legendary system and titanforging, it would be perfect for me too.

Man i miss legion times so much. Not just the game that was amazing, but the situations I lived with my friends and the memories

However, with all that said, Legion is how I and many others in my friend circles choose to describe WoW's *Perfect* modern expansion
The honouring of the days long gone, the stories told and each of the NPCs and fascinating storylines that were exuded in the nature of the Class Halls.
Edd, you are a legend mate
Thank you for watching, I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
i asked myself this same question recently, went back and redid alllll the questing from legion…. the answer was yes and that was just from questing

That was a really good read.
i asked this same question about a year ago and went and replayed legion and oh my god i had a blast. it’s still the best expansion to me.
Nice! I'm glad to hear you still enjoyed it! It's my favourite too, with TBC just right behind it.
One correction, it's not the "Spirit" of Medivh. It just Medivh, he didn't die after Warcraft 3 and is still alive as of Dragonflight.
I think stopping after MoP is a very safe bet, but we'll have to wait and see!
good vid
Thank you. Glad you liked it!
Glad to hear you have such fond memories of it!
HEROS OF THE STORM MENTIONED
Hell yes! I used to play ranked all the time. I used to float around diamond and masters. It still breaks my heart what has happened to that game :(
"THE LIGHT... WILL... AUUAAAGHHHH" is easily a top 5 WoW soundbite all-time.
well it was far better than MoP, WoD, BFA, Shadowlands and Dragonflight, so it has to count for something right ? how can modern blizz drop the ball so hard after striking gold ?
I think it's possible to take positives from all of those expansions, although Shadowlands would be extremely difficult in the eyes of many. I think in a way, you may have answered your own question: 'Striking gold'. I think greed is what really got them. Whether we want to point the finger at Activision, Bobby Kotick or whoever it may be, it's clear that Blizzard's goals were to generate as much money as possible, as opposed to the love and care that was going into their product like we saw in Legion and even before that.
100% dude @@edd_TV
your insane if you think its better than dragonflight
@@MurrmorMeerkat you're* insane if you still play retail
first time entering suramar was a blast, the presentation of the new factions, everything was well made
I don't remember a zone making me feel the way Suramar did.
'Something's not quite right....'. It was so quotable. Glad you enjoyed it!
Yes it was fuck anyone who thinks otherwise
Absolutely loved Legion. I levelled every single class and spec to legion just to experience all the artifact weapon questlines and new (usually incredible spell). Never felt stronger as a Shaman, both enh and ele, and had so much fun raid healing as a monk and played feral druid simply to look amazing with the new cat forms. (boy do i regret not doing mage tower for the cat skins) Stormkeeper with chain lightning was insane on mythic +
Suramar was absolutely stunning, had a lot of variety despite the similar aesthetic.
Met my first guild in legion was an amazing experience younger me was addicted to the artifact weapons and feeling like a true hero
That's great. Sounds like you have some awesome memories of Legion!
That Ragnarok music in the outro. Hit me in the feels.
Glad you recognised it!
I really liked the music of Legion. Entering high mountain for the first time was magical.
The soundtrack is so good. I was spoiled for choice in picking what tracks I wanted to use for this video!
As for my opinion: Legion was full of great content - I even liked ToS and CoEN, tbh, though I despised Seat of the Triumvirate(probably because it took until 7.3.2 for people to start actually learning the dungeon) - but was marred by a few things you mentioned:
- Legiondaries being 100% random until I think 7.3 the vendor was added, and even then, it wasn't until 7.3.2 that you could more easily target specific legendaries, to the point where CE guilds had people re-roll the same class and spec if they didn't get one or both of their BiS legendaries in their first four drops. (And somehow, got 9 legendaries - including my BiS for ST ele, AoE ele, and enhancement - in two and a half weeks real-life.)
- The way M+ keystones functioned until I believe 7.2 or 7.2.5, with the depleting function.
(Kinda like mythic raids have been for almost their entire existence, with EN being a bit of an outlier because that was just a really easy raid.)
- The complete rework to, and purging of, so many specs - along with locking almost all abilities to a spec, not a class - honestly didn't feel _terrible_ at level 100 or 110, and just got better with buffing your artifact weapon, to the point where a fully buffed artifact weapon had some classes play the most fun they ever have, imo(here's looking at you, Arms & Prot Warrior, Disc Priest, and Ele Shaman; and while I'm not personally a fan of the post-WoD version of this spec, I'll throw in ~~Void~~ Shadow Priest, because of how much so many players loved the Voidform/Insanity mechanic), just to remove nearly the ENTIRETY of this borrowed power in the BfA pre-patch.
I felt the same after all was said and done. I said to myself 'How can they ever top this?' And I'm still asking that question now!
They need to bring back class halls and campaigns. Losing them made the game feel really bad.
That RO ost at the end got me, nice vid.
It always makes me smile when somebody recognises it and tells me in the comments. Glad you liked it!
Legion is peak WoW. That Illidan cinematic where he destroys Xe'ra... incredible
One of the best of all time, for sure!
i will never forget how fun mistweaver was in pvp in legion.
Back in WoD (yea i know, but i had a good time in that one) it felt like playing a combo healer with actual mana management.
that ragnarok online music at the end was a rush of nostalgia for me
One of my favourites, glad you liked it!
That's great to hear! Glad you're having a blast with it!
12:21 as someone who has been part of this franchise since wc3, this was a great nostalgic moment
With the lightning strike! Iconic.
I agree! Thank you for typing this up. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and feelings!
This is a really well made video. You got a new fan today!
That's very kind of you to say so. I'm glad you liked it! Thanks a lot!
I agree. They dedicated so much time to it, and it really showed and paid off.
I agree! Who knows what features will appear in the Worldsoul Saga though. It's possible we could see something similar again.
It was a revelation at the time, to see a max level zone like that. I agree, I would love to see something similar again.
Like War Crimes for example, if you haven't read that and you go straight into WoD, you just have to roll with the punches and you probably think 'What the hell is going on here?!'
I like your thinking with the Artifact Weapons! Thank you for watching and your comment!
Suramar is what i use to describe Silvermoon City in my WoW D&D campaign
(my players dont play WoW so they will never know)
Love that!
Legion was my favorite of all time! the raids were all incredible beginning to end! the lore the zones everything about all of it was incredible
Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did! Thanks for watching!
Glad to hear it! Thank you for sharing your thoughts!
Amen
It's hard for people to undeerstand how good Legion was because WoD and BFA were so bad. Legion was truly great. M+ was incredible, class fantasy was amaazing, and every spec had at least one super strong patch.
I think you really have to remove yourself from what came afterwards. Legion is absolutely guilty for the sins of both BFA and Shadowlands, but I think if you choose not to think about them and try live in that moment that was solely 'Legion', it was very good.
Absolutely agree @@edd_TV
Vengeance had the most ridiculous burst dps of any tank spec with fiery brand, not really a tank-specific thing, but it was unique and very fun, especially for world pvp. It also had a lot of cc options that felt great in 15+ dungeons.
Havoc was.. the best dps class at soloing heroics, haha, I remember queueing as tank, switching to havoc and telling the healer to respec dps as well. The mobility was also amazing for doing solo content.
I bet you blasted dungeons playing like that!
Glad to hear you're back in the (re)mix! I feel very hopeful about the future of WoW too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings!
Damn the idea of a illidan of light would be so cooool
That is some impressive work, well done! You sound like you had a great time during Legion. It's good to read!
I love legion, easily my favourite expansion BUT, the legendary system sucked until they brought in the vendor, that was it's main drawback
Legion was the last and only attempt by Blizzard to course correct and afterwards they failed miserably.
"I think the Nighthold is probably where some of my happiest memories of WoW are, period." You and me fam. You and me.
It really is one of those 'Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened' moments. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did!
Mythic Plus and demon hunter class saved the game BIG TIME.
Mythic+ absolutely revolusioned the game and took it to new heights. Offering that replayability was such a stroke of genius.
