Also "The Last Guardian" by Jeff Grubb gives a very good account of Khadgar's short-lived apprenticeship, and is overall one of the best Warcraft novels. And the Karazhan expansion in Hearthstone was a fun time, complete with much partying. Fun fact: the Maiden of Virtue was sent to Karazhan to stop Medivh's excessive partying. And as of now, he is just kinda hanging out in Karazhan for the time being. We know from this from the Exploring the Eastern Kingdoms book, but then again...it's an outside source.
THe whole excessive partying thing seemed a rather big retcon of The Last Guardian. I'd assumed when Karazhan came out that Medivh at best kinda tolerated these people trying to throw parties for his benefit in his own house because he felt eh had to and then finally sent them all away.
Until WoW appeared, by the end of RoC the most important heroes and villains of both wars were gone: Khadgar, Lothar, Durotan, Doomhammer, Blackhand, Gul'dan etc. and finally those who died recently like Uther or Grom, to give a rise to a new generation of heroes and villains (like Thrall, Jaina and Arthas). But it had to be showed by the very man, who started all this mess, was believed to be long-dead and who finally would close the final chapter of Azeroth's war against the enemy responsible for all misery during in 3 chapters - demonic Burning Legion (until the TFT and WoW series).
I like the idea of this all-powerful hermit wizard only interacting with his fellow man through throwing massive parties that eventually result in everyone’s death. Dude likes to have a good time
Medivh is back, he’s briefly mentioned by Khadgar in DF to be hanging out in Karazhan. He, or his Shade, makes an appearance in the Anniversary event also. So Medivh is around, just chilling until Blizz needs him I guess.
Honestly, I don't think Medivh was evil at all. I'm pretty sure Medivh and Sargeras were both fighting over control of the body, making it a literal battle of minds. Medivh didn't have enough control to outright stop or sabotage Sargeras, so instead he had to think several moves ahead (like a chess game, get it?). And eventually it did work. First he let the orcs in, then he removed Sargeras (and himself) from the board, ensuring their eventual defeat after the races of the eastern kingdoms had no choice but to band together for once, preparing them for an eventual burning legion incursion. Meanwhile the orcs fell apart due to bad leadership and infighting, but they too would be needed to fight the burning legion. Finally Medivh's spirit, freed from Sargeras contacted his mother and got her to resurrect him, after which he lead Jaina and Thrall to Kalimdor to stop the invasion because again HE KNEW THE PLAN. Also it stands to reason Medivh knew exactly why Sargeras went so crazy trying to destroy Azeroth, so we'll probably see both of them again eventually.
You are right, Meivh did nothing wrong, his chess thingy against Sargeras is a retcon I think. First of all he didnt even know that his mother trasfered Guardian power into him, and first time he manifested his powers at the age of 14 Sargeras put him into coma. He fell into coma not because of powers but because of Sargeras, after that Demon spent 10 years establishing control over Medivh. So when dude did wake up he was a puppet already. He legit had no chance, he was a kid against of the most power Demon ever. And frankly he had only 14 years of trully his life, rest was under Sargeras control or being spirit thingy or whatever he is now.
Finally someone capable of thinking. There's no way a 100% controlled Medivh would've been able to force Malfurion and Tyrande to join Thrall and Jaina. What's people gonna pretend now? That because Medivh's body died, Sargeras had no control over his soul? So it was Sargeras that created the united front that defeated Archimonde and delayed his plans? Please. We know Odyn can intercept souls leaving for the Shadowlands, Sargeras dealt with the Twisting Nether demons on a daily basis back on the day, there simply isn't a scenario in which Sargeras is less knowledgeable than Odyn, so it's clear Medivh was just better at planning and pretending. Even the fact that he was killed by Khadgar, Garona and Lothar, of which only Khadgar is more than a normal person, but just an apprentice at that point, is testimony to Sargeras not being fully in control, but simply led to believe so. Two very important things align with the time of Medivh's death to be a coincidence. The beginning of Stormwind's downfall, which led to the creation of the Great Alliance in the north, and Gul'dan falling into a coma, which allowed Doomhammer to defy and defeat Blackhand. Logically speaking, it's almost done on purpose, releasing the Horde of its leash and pushing humans to the north and force elves, dwarves and gnomes to join up with them. Besides that, he went to wander around as a soul, investigating the Legion further, so much so he was able to orchestrate the events of Reign of Chaos and part of WoW, leading to not only one, but two defeats for the Legion. Archimonde and Kil'Jaeden must've hated this guy. And they only hate those better than them, as events have proven.
I think Medivh did pretty good for literally having Sargeras the biggest bad we ever knew for a while in him at birth and in a way he has put us on a path to prepare for most of the major problems that shaped our world (of warcraft).
Best as I can recall, didn't Medivh's conception come from the fact that Aegwynn just chose Aran more out of thinking he was decent enough to give her a powerful child rather than the two having any sort of loving bond?
@@Jhazkrit it's really sad if you think about it, for myself I was a big nerd for warcraft lore and played warcraft 2, 3/TFT and WoW a lot but as time goes on the lore got messed up and retconed besides the initially plot holes and lost character story's, now I look at the wow lore and feel just sad and empty about it about all that potential that is lost, it feels so washed out and twisted now.
@@Jhazkrit Oh yeah, I'm gonna be totally honest when I say I forget they do that :P Granted, what happened with the whole of SLs was one thing, but I didn't think they would have gone that far back to change little things like that.

I actually really like how he hasn't done anything since WC3. He helped the armies of Azeroth save the day, repenting for his actions in causing the First War, and then he quietly slipped into the shadows, never to be seen again. His appearance in Legion feels like it's just a confirmation that he's still out there, presumably living happily on a farm somewhere.
I can't believe I'm just now discovering your channel. That was one of the funniest, most informative and best told Warcraft lore videos I've ever seen. Looking forward to checking out more. Very well done.
I need more deep dive storytelling of the lore! Pretty much all lore videos are confusing and they go too fast but this was phenomenal. It’s like if someone was reading the wiki to me but way more captivating. I want to learn more about mages and their lore. Like Antonidas and Aluneth (the staff) and Khadgar and the Kirin Tor!
The party section was perfect XD . thank u platinum again for telling the story. I did not play warcraft 1 and 2 and I just read the first 4 books. from rise of the horde to beyond the dark portal and those books were great and I love them all.
A new karazhan dungeon idea: a group of goblins wants to buy/take the tower and make a new party/mall center, but a group of mages and schoolars want to preserve the place as a historical place You must pick a side and help them out
Imagine the first warcraft film would've shown the story of Aegwynn, how she fought the avartar etc. Man. the warcraft lore is so deep and interesting and in the movie they only showed a very tiny part of it - and in a really poor way aswell. So much potential wasted.
Ive played since wc1, and I remember that epic first encounter with medivh 😂 Seriously tho, this is the first time I've ever understood this character, well done and thanks from a longtime warcrafter
The Medivh you see in the raid is just an echo a magic imprint like the dragon you see before the Nightbane fight. Medivh is actually alive he appears to Thrall when he was lost in the timeways to help Thrall find Nozdormu. We see him in a physical form later in Legion which shocked Khadgar who couldn't believe he was alive.
Yo hold up. Are you telling me that an ambush party of trolls were effortlessly, *accidentally* defeated by a 6 year old? Fuck Azeroth, Warcraft's trolls are the biggest losers in fiction, period.
The movie really made a sense explaining the lore for me, and probably for 80% of the Warcraft community, and also did take out those weird "mistakes" like Med'an and the development of Garona, in the end Loth'ar and Kadghar are the ones who killed him and tied the story right to Warcraft 2 and 3.
Aegwynn has been retconned so much. I liked the original version where she didnt fall in love with neilas aran, and instead, seduced him and used him. Gave her more of an identity.
I don't necessarily mind the idea that she might have had SOME tiny feeling for him. Also Medivh himself got a lot of retcons. Karazhan added the parties element that hadn't seemed all that present in the novel. And Chronicle decided "Khadgar was suspiscious why the Kirin Tor wanted to spy on Medivh because Medivh had no public feats" was getting thrown right out, because they had him 1v1 Hakkar at the gates of Stormwind. Kinda shitting on the whole mystery vibe of The Last Guardian.
@@Blundabus1337 Oh no they Bronze never argued it was intentional just that the Orcs being there was needed to ensure the Legion's next attack would fail. Because they united the human kingdoms, and eventually turned against the Demons themselves. No Orcs, no Alliance, no victory against the Legion at Hyjal. At least that's what the Bronze flight told us. But Thrall:Twilight of the Aspects gives a different reason that could be more relevant and make the Bronze flight's original explanation a little white lie. *ANY* break from the "Correct" timeline creates a doomed offshoot that will simply "Run out of time" if not anchored to the main timeline in some way (Their excuse for how the WoD timeline decayed so slowly by comparison was that the mirror shards kept it anchored) so even if the Orcs weren't necessary to beat the legion they were necessary to avoid "Going off script" and an end even worse than the Legion's victory.
@@DIEGhostfish No Im saying, in the black morass raid, medivh was clearly trying to destroy azeroth. They then retconned it to him thinking the orcs will save it... which he couldnt have known... its dumb
Why'd they get rid of Sargearas. I feel like Blizzard kinda shot themselves in the foot doing that. Definitely more compelling as a villain than N'Zoth, the Jailer and so on. They easily could've gotten two xpacs back to back outta the Burning Crusade has always been my opinion tho.
You would think that Khedgar, currently one of strongest mages in Azeroth and Medievh's apprentice would cast magic or something during his fight with his master Nah, just stab him with a sword, im sure it will be fiiiiiiiine
To add to the insanity, Medivh not only killed Moroes but also some old lady who did the cooking (and who knows how many more) in such a gruesome way that Garona, an assasin, went pale from seeing what was left of the body.

God damn this video for having this Back To Karazhan remix, I cannot get enough of how amazingly good of a remix that is. I will never see Karazhan the same way again after that rave set he put in this video. Thanks.
4:05 I recalled from reading the book (yes, I actually bought the thing back then) that she didn't really love Nielas and just wanted his *ahem* seed so that she could pass on the powers of a guardian under her own terms i.e. her son.
Your videos are amazing. Even after I quit playing wow I still come back to them. Have you ever thought about covering lore for other games? I imagine doing a video on riots lore would be a smooth transition.
Medivh did nothing wrong. This is all Aegwynn’s fault. It’s hard to fault someone who had a literal godlike being twisting his mind since he was an infant. Sarg was forced on him by his own MOTHER. Do not blame the child for the sins of the parents.
Fun fact. There is a custom campaign for Warcraft 3 called "The Last Guardian" based off the book with the same name and it's one of the best customs out there in my honest opinion. It's more of an rpg mixed with fixed cameras and puzzles / riddels like in Resident evil. Def. worth playing for any fan. 😊
So, the reason we had the First War was because Medivh's mom got cocky, got corrupted, passed that corruption to her son and the left him to be raised by his father? Now that is a certified woman moment Very based, Blizzard
I do believe the Bronze Dragonflight mentioned that without the Dark Portal opening and the Orcs and the Horde forming on Azeroth the Alliance races would have fallen to infighting and destroyed one another leading to a completely defenseless Azeroth when Sarg's Burning Legion showed up. This would mean that Medivh in fact SAVED the Warcraft Universe leaving a bolstered Azeroth to fight off both the plague through Arthas and the eventual return of the Legion proper, resulting in Sarg's imprisonment. I would say, if anything Azshara and the Highborne being responsible for making Azeroth a beacon to Sarg with the Well of Eternity and the attempted summoning of Sarg in the first place was more detrimental to Azeroth than Medivh could have ever hoped to be.
I haven't played WoW since I was a teen, but I'm so glad I found this channel. You make whole movies that obviously take a lot of time and effort, please never stop!!
few things you got wrong, gul'dan sacrificed only a single innocent soul to open the portal. Blackhand was the warchief of the horde at the time, and unwitting puppet of gu'ldan. also you didnt mention that garona was brainwashed by gul'dan and magically aged. the thing you got the most right, Gul'dan is a cartoon villain! awesome video.
OMG the party mix is amazing, i want it for myself for parties hehe Thanks once again for such an amazing video, including Moroes gentleman/butler talk, in a not so distant future, please do a warrior video, i.e. warrior artifact weapons!
You did the same mistake the movie did when talking about how Gul'dan opened the portal: he didn't use the souls of "countless draenei" but the soul of a single draenei child.
Theres a part in the Last Guardian book where Khadgar goes into Medivhs room when is sleeping and sees a shadowy figure (Sargeras) stood watching over Medivh. Ive always thought that was pretty cool.
one of my favourite bits of lore about Medich iirc is that some thieves tried to loot his tower so he killed, ressurected them and cursed them to forever seek ancient and powerful artifacts and bring them to him( i believe they are the ones searching for the Schyte of Elune in Duskwood in the Classic quests there). Then i believe he would sell the artifacts and get all the money for the sick ragers
The Warcraft movie was pretty meh but I licked that shit off the plate, rewatched it several times for the Gul’dan mak’gora scene. That shit was so badass

The facetime call absolutely sent me. 10/10 video as always
I loved those old novels. Tirion Fordrings was great too.
More Platinum content and it's a lore video, hell to the yes man.
That's how it was originally, however that, along with a great many thing in the Warcraft universe, has been retconned.
Correct. They were never in love. She was trying to find a man suitable enough
I could listen to that Karazhan party music for hours. I need it
The production quality & writing is way too good for a Warcraft machinima. Someone hire this guy asap
I need a 10 hour version of that Karazhan party man.
This ^^^
+1
Medivh is really cool. Too bad we don't have great ways to find his lore. Well, until you uploaded this video that is.
Most of things he said was not accurate.
@@cyrusthegreat3299 Shhhhh, it's called creative liberties.
Read The Last Guardian. Still maybe the best WoW fiction.
read this Last Guardian book. It's really good.
Oh I was not ready for "I am a baby, and my name is Medivh"
0:44 movie was great
Yes
Medivh is one of the most interesting characters in world of Warcraft and his story is just crazy. Thank you for doing a video on this guy.
10:33 I gotta say this is probably my favorite bit of the video, its so well shot. The music and each spellcaster reacting are so cool
Your content is so good, that despite my instincts and cries of pain, I don't skip past the ad.
DJ Medivh is something I never knew I needed
Is it just me or do I love it when the trolls come on and make the imp guy sounds and stuff just to die lol
Medihv's party went hard lol, I loved that scene
10:43
Opens the Dark Portal, refuses to elaborate and parties instead.
Bro i just wanted to thank you for this content. I just got back into retail since mist and diving back into the lore. You're the best
AI Voice generators are a game changer for these videos lmao
Its so cool
Honestly I think WoW should do more with Medivh. He's not exactly dead you know.
Worse: He is Irrelevant
He's on the cosmic shelf, the next time we go to hte cosmos, he'll be there.
Well he died. Was resurrected then died again (phased to spirit world or something? What about shadowlands? Small indie company things)
He's alive. I think whenever we get to see the first ones or the other zereths (as we know that there are at least 5 more and uldaman updated lore already told us about zereth ordus) he'll make his appearance
What a time to be alive must have been to attend medivh's parties
That medivh breakdown went harder than it should’ve 🤣🤣
Medivh is so underrated as a character and Kara is cool AF.
I love all of it
I can't believe I'm just now discovering your channel.
A new karazhan dungeon idea: a group of goblins wants to buy/take the tower and make a new party/mall center, but a group of mages and schoolars want to preserve the place as a historical place
You must pick a side and help them out
World of Warcraft new expansion: getting karazhan up to code, the catch is it will never ends
Imagine the first warcraft film would've shown the story of Aegwynn, how she fought the avartar etc.
Man. the warcraft lore is so deep and interesting and in the movie they only showed a very tiny part of it - and in a really poor way aswell. So much potential wasted.
And also factually incorrect at several major points
It's really not deep, its just warhammer lol
@@WitheringZealot that's a slippery slope
@@malachistice8111 WoW is a spawn of warhammer i can give you the data on it if you want it.
@@WitheringZealot ah you are just ignorant to the term 'slippery slope'
Look that up first, then get back to me
Ive played since wc1, and I remember that epic first encounter with medivh 😂
Seriously tho, this is the first time I've ever understood this character, well done and thanks from a longtime warcrafter

Gah!
Platinum, could you PLEASE warn me next time you jumpscare me like that!?
These are always such high quality videos and such a joy to watch. Excellent work yet again Platinum. Looking forward to your next upload!
BEST. VIDEO. YET! Holy crap I thought I knew everything about Medivh before this video but I didn't know ANYTHING! Good work as always Plattyboi!
I'm watching this video while sitting in a train and I couldn't hold my laughter at the party scene :D amazing
I must say, the Kharazan party music from Hearthstone is straight up fire and likely the best blizz has done
I want to know who made the remix and where to find it
@@AlexeyFilippenkoPlummet th-cam.com/video/YhO08gxT0zs/w-d-xo.html
He put the name at the end when he shows the patreon supporters :)
You have the best ideas for comedic moments :D thanks for the entertainment!
If Blizz ever tries to make another Torghast like feature, Karazhan would be a pretty dope Setting. Just dont tie it to player power again
I've been a Medivh lore sucker for almost 20 years now. Good to see a solid video from a solid creator on him.
Yo hold up. Are you telling me that an ambush party of trolls were effortlessly, *accidentally* defeated by a 6 year old? Fuck Azeroth, Warcraft's trolls are the biggest losers in fiction, period.
How often do you think about Medivh’s dance party? Every damn day.
Awesome Video as Always Lad!
Mediv Dancing is pure gold!
Dude you put so much work into this. Kudos. Loved the content.
Awesome work! Especially on the custom animations. The dance party scenes were epic.
@@DIEGhostfish also, medivh brought the orcs.... to fight the legion?
Then why does he say "LET YOUR HORDE SWEEP ACROSS THE RIPE UNSUSPECTING WORLD"
@@Blundabus1337 Oh no they Bronze never argued it was intentional just that the Orcs being there was needed to ensure the Legion's next attack would fail.
I had no fucking idea One Night in Karazhan was based on actual lore lmao
Mediv is the first character we see in Warcraft 3, so I'm very fond of him and his sweet ass boss.
i want a long direct version from the medivh party xD
You would think that Khedgar, currently one of strongest mages in Azeroth and Medievh's apprentice would cast magic or something during his fight with his master
Nah, just stab him with a sword, im sure it will be fiiiiiiiine
To add to the insanity, Medivh not only killed Moroes but also some old lady who did the cooking (and who knows how many more) in such a gruesome way that Garona, an assasin, went pale from seeing what was left of the body.
An assassin for a coven of warlocks (And a retconned shadow priest)
dude, amazing quality and storytelling :D the party just made my day :D
Medivh is not a simple villain... he is a super villain... the difference is ... PRESENTATION ... starts sound : ParacroW - Back To Karazhan | REMIX * , awesome video
Thanks for the name lol, the song is fire
God damn this video for having this Back To Karazhan remix, I cannot get enough of how amazingly good of a remix that is.
I will never see Karazhan the same way again after that rave set he put in this video. Thanks.
Next expansion Battle for Beetle Island
19:49 Having played hearthstone on/off for years now, this last note makes me appreciate the dlc adventure capturing the party
Amazing work as usual! 😍
I fucking love Platinum WoW videos. It’s 100% the best way to consume WoW lore.
Medivh did nothing wrong.
This is all Aegwynn’s fault. It’s hard to fault someone who had a literal godlike being twisting his mind since he was an infant. Sarg was forced on him by his own MOTHER.
Do not blame the child for the sins of the parents.
What sins, she didn't know she contained Sargeras spirit.
She didn't knew Sargeras' spirit was inside her, so it wasn't her fault either. The fault lies exclusively on Sargeras.
Now that is a certified woman moment
Very based, Blizzard
OMG the party mix is amazing, i want it for myself for parties hehe
Thanks once again for such an amazing video, including Moroes gentleman/butler talk, in a not so distant future, please do a warrior video, i.e. warrior artifact weapons!
You did the same mistake the movie did when talking about how Gul'dan opened the portal: he didn't use the souls of "countless draenei" but the soul of a single draenei child.
"Medivh was born a baby"
And that's why he's special
What an absolute banger of a song for a banger video!
Theres a part in the Last Guardian book where Khadgar goes into Medivhs room when is sleeping and sees a shadowy figure (Sargeras) stood watching over Medivh. Ive always thought that was pretty cool.
Boy, that Karazhan remix is extra fire
one of my favourite bits of lore about Medich iirc is that some thieves tried to loot his tower so he killed, ressurected them and cursed them to forever seek ancient and powerful artifacts and bring them to him( i believe they are the ones searching for the Schyte of Elune in Duskwood in the Classic quests there). Then i believe he would sell the artifacts and get all the money for the sick ragers
The Warcraft movie was pretty meh but I licked that shit off the plate, rewatched it several times for the Gul’dan mak’gora scene. That shit was so badass
This easily your best video edit yet. Great work lmao! Love the parties
I despise adds as a whole. When Platinum starts in on his little add speeches I thoroughly enjoy every bit of it! Watched every one of your lore videos and I love them! You make that money Boo boo! ❤
"Medivh was born a baby." Funniest fucking line. This whole video was one of your most entertaining. Great work!
Everyone loves the Arthas story, but the lesson of Medivh is a good one. You cant give one guy all the power and duty to save the world. Everyone has to strive for a better future or be doomed to hell
4:13 can medivh like.. Shush?
