That shot of the ship's core, fading through the chassis to the overview of the ship itself blasting into view is still one of the coolest sequences I've ever seen in a game.
What a great, but hard, game with many nice ideas and good music. And all those transparency, scaling and rotation effects with almost no slowdown - it looks awesome! The whole game is easily one of the best looking shmups on 16bit home consoles.
A series at its creative apex, a showcase for its system, and harder than balls to boot. This is for SNES what Thunder Force IV is for the Genesis/Mega Drive.
I had both, Thunderforce IV is a much better game, including as a technical showpiece, with its large vertically scrolling levels and insane amount of parallax. It was also much better than its predecessors and was never topped on Megadrive. R-Type 3 remains inferior to the original, and wasn't the best SCHMUP on the system.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 I agree. The Thunder Force series is my favorite shoot em up series ever. Great music, fantastic graphics, and solid gameplay. I still can't believe how gargantuan TFIV still looks and sounds, even today.
@Lucas The Megadrive couldn't do rotation, that was a SNES feature. But it pushed the Megadrive more than RIII pushed the SNES. The parallax scrolling and sense of scale, was also miles better than anything else-including R.III. Even Echo the Dolphin/II wasn't as gorgeous, nor have as many layers.
@@rocketassistedgoat1079 That's where Axelay steps in, great gameplay, incredible visuals, challenging gameplay. Every stage has some kind of eye candy, making you wonder how they pulled it all off.

Gotta love how desperate the last boss truly is. It's dimensional gate is closing, but it has the strength to hold it open just enough to try and still kill you. Of course one dose of the Force fired backwards into it's mouth is just the medicine you need to be rid of the pest once and for all. How the hell it held open that portal is anyone's guess, likely sheer will and determination to exterminate you.
A more-than-worthy follow-up to the excellent Super R-Type - the mode-7 spectacles alone make it worthwhile, but the game play is just as tight as you'd expect from the wizards at Irem. Think Axelay is awesome? Try this!
Yeah, this was definitely a worthy sequel. They clearly put love and effort into its design and took advantage of mode-7 in some interesting ways. Super R-Type is also good as a sort of "greatest hits" of levels and enemies from I & II. :)
I think the second stage of this game takes place inside a dying transdimensional Bydo monstrosity and the enemies and even the boss are just parasites living inside it. A few stages of the older R-Type games (I, II & Super) look like they are set on planets that have been overtaken and then occupied by the Bydo.
@@Mateoski97 Super R Type has got unlimited continues, and the fact you can start from the beginning of the level just makes it better, because you can grab the powerups. Isn't this the end?" *advanced mode starts with like 3-4 times more speed and a gajillion bullets* "Whew, this is insane!" Foreal, props for the mad skills! I was sweating even though I was just watching. Cool game but some of the design seems borderline unfair. Having to go backwards on stage 4 (right?), I'd probably put the game down and never pick it up again. xD
Because "R-Type" and "R-Type 2" were released as arcade games - also, "R-Type 2" was actually released on the SNES as well as a slightly different game with the name "Super R-Type".
You can do it! In the first run throughs of stage one, get some practice reversing your Force and don't get more than 1 speed upgrade. Go ahead and familiarize yourself with patterns; left/right and up/down obstacles are obvious to dodge, the diagonals are the ones that are hard to deal with (for me anyways) Hope this helps :D
Charge your shot for a few seconds, the bar should fill, keep holding, it will charge a second time. Then let it go, your charge will then overheat, but your shots will be powerful, but must cool down to use it again. It was done this way so players didn't abuse it.

In a lot of ways the R-Type series is legendary, and without this series, and Gradius, you'd have no Thunder Force period. No joke, this game is far more challenging than the already tough TF 4. This game also has a cooler, epic boss, TF 4 kind of ends with a rather dull last boss, it's also a bit long for a shmup, a similar problem Gradius V suffered (it had loops 80 minutes long when played with no checkpoints used, a bit too long).
Oh, I see what has happened here. You accidentally mislabeled the Playstation/Saturn port of R-Type for the Snes one. Don't worry, it could happen to anyone....;) Addendum- In all seriousness, the graphics in this are Thunder Force IV good.

Foreal, props for the mad skills! I was sweating even though I was just watching. Cool game but some of the design seems borderline unfair. Having to go backwards on stage 4 (right?), I'd probably put the game down and never pick it up again. xD
This makes me wish I had a Snes...
You don't have a SNES?=O
Emulate it...it should take a couple minutes to do if you look for a tutorial on YT
Incrivel vc joga muito!!
05:45: My favorit Part
Ese jefe me da cringe jajaja
Wtf did they make a part 3!!
Because "R-Type" and "R-Type 2" were released as arcade games - also, "R-Type 2" was actually released on the SNES as well as a slightly different game with the name "Super R-Type".
Brutal!!
0:53 i hear the cat, skskskks
I cant pass stage 2
You can do it! In the first run throughs of stage one, get some practice reversing your Force and don't get more than 1 speed upgrade. Go ahead and familiarize yourself with patterns; left/right and up/down obstacles are obvious to dodge, the diagonals are the ones that are hard to deal with (for me anyways)
Hope this helps :D
@@codysykes5568 I agree. As much as I love d-pads, analog sticks are a godsend for diagonals and speed control in shmups
How do you do the hyper beam attack in this game please tell me!!!
Charge your shot for a few seconds, the bar should fill, keep holding, it will charge a second time. Then let it go, your charge will then overheat, but your shots will be powerful, but must cool down to use it again. It was done this way so players didn't abuse it.
The first ever (if not one of the first) game that was intentionally made ball-busting difficult because they wanted to counteract the rising popularity of rental games.
I dunno dude, I can remember a lot of ball bustingly difficult games before it. And before rentals became a thing, no less.
What do you mean? Contra? Mario bros? Life force?
Es la cuenta de mi hijo, le conté que fui el único de mi barrio en pasarlo.
The guitar of this game soundtrack reminds me SNES battletoads guitar
i own this game now and am surprise that its value 200$
I can't believe I paid no more than $10 for this game years ago, and how much it, and Axelay have exploded in value. I got Axelay around the same time for $7.99 off Ebay, much like R-Type 3.
Much better than super r type
Yeah, the slow-down makes Super R Type almost unplayable, same with Gradius 3.
trip2themoon that's because the SNES processor had a hard time handling soo much sprites on the screen.
wii245, It was an early SNES release, Irem didn't know how to use the hardware. By this game, they had an idea of how to work with it, and it shows.
Oilo este ignorante que no sabe de videojuegos, super r type es mejor y el r type 3 da cringe los jefes
Finally finished this game a few days ago on the hacked mini classic after dying 1000x (save scummed like a motherfucker). After watching the other two videos which are very good, you are definitely the best player! Crazy ship control and throwing the force around the screen like a Jedi Master considering also the original force is the weakest of the three. A toast to you sir!
Thanks very much! It was a painful process getting there! Super satisfying, though.
@@NintendoComplete damn straight! When I was a young warthog, beating the 2nd boss was an epiphany and as far as I could get. Now I can die in peace...
Who is this alien they keep building?
yesterday i read, this game would beat thunderforce 4... i guess that was meant as a joke.
Yo this is rios old student of yours found something you might enjoy look up oataking he made a fan animation of this game you might enjoy it
Oh yeah? Do you have a link? And which Rios are you? I've known quite a few ;)
Oh, I see what has happened here. You accidentally mislabeled the Playstation/Saturn port of R-Type for the Snes one. Don't worry, it could happen to anyone....;)
Addendum- In all seriousness, the graphics in this are Thunder Force IV good.
Please, is this gameplay Tool assisted?
