- Imagine trying to fall asleep in a sauna! That’s what our van Ody can feel like during a heat wave - where temperatures routinely reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38C). Van life in the summer has it’s pros and cons for sure, but recent weather trends in Europe have made these new heatwaves pretty brutal, which is why we insulated our van a lot during the van conversion, and that’s also the reason we normally never stray too far away from the ocean-because a quick swim before bed is the only way to cool down! This week, we’re leaving the coastline behind to travel towards Meteora, a majestic collection of monasteries in the mountains of central Greece. Tons of fellow travelers have recommended them to us, but one question remains. Will it be worth battling 100 degree heat to see this “must visit” spot? That’s what we’re about to find out…

What do u guys do for a living? How do u make money? Even before I found ur channel i was thinking of living “Van Life” also when i am older. Idk how I would make money for groceries and things on the road when traveling. You guys are a big inspiration, and i think you are very productive and passionate about life!
Dana, you have such a beautiful voice. Its both calming and has a depth that makes people really want to listen. I am not sure if you know how great the power you have is, and the impact you both have and can have on our lives. Just imagining making a meditation practice? Or reading stories, both your own or someone elses? Like a podcast of stories or a story time feature on this channel. People will listen.

Hi guys! Lidl is a german chain which has a lot of stores here in Greece. Also is the only chain in country, which most of the products are being sold in a plastic packaging, even fruits and vegetables. I can understand the reason that you prefer those shops( are cheaper obvioulsy), but If you want to promote a more sustainable way of living, you should consider the supermarket for having your groceries next time :)

For hot summer days I like to take my dogs to a cold lake to cool off while basking in the shade. For times I’m inside, I keep a freezer towel I got off amazon around my neck if the A/C isn’t sufficient.

Tom absolutely! In their newsletter they mention how this video he showcased his improvements so I was just agreeing with them.
To me the story telling aspect is becoming too dominant over time. I prefer the less produced feeling of the story telling in earlier videos.
I was in Provence during that Heat Wave. But I was inside a 2 foot thick, 600 year old, stone building, with a fan, and wooden shutters I could close during the heat of the day, protected by the shade cast from the other buildings across the narrow street. Can't imagine doing it in a van. Props! Seems like the best solution for the full-time van lifers I know is North for the summer, South for the winter. Chasing 70º.
I was suffering watching you, too hot can be mortal. People from places where weather is warm think that the best way to avoid the hot is the water but the best way is avoid hot. So simply. First, look for a shadow always, try to use a hat or cap. Wet your hair if you don’t feel well. Never to be inside the van when the temperature is too high, if you are inside always with the windows open. In the other hand watermelon was an excellent idea. I loved the video and the recipe. ☺️Good job.

Wow, almost could feel the heat radiating from your face as I watched the video. While I loved to see Meteora, think I will do it in the fall....I am not as good as you are in the heat. Another amazing hike, thanks for sharing it. Watermelon looked delicious, never would of thought to add lemon juice.

What I love most about these videos is rediscovering my country through your eyes. I love to travel abroad, but I often forget how beautiful Greece can be, and how people travel from all over the world to visit this country that I take for granted. I visited Meteora as a child and probably didn't appreciate it enough - now I got the urge to go back and actually take in the sight.
P.S. did you not visit the monasteries? I remember they were open to the public.

I carry a folding fan with me, all the time. I was going to the hear and humidity of Florida in August and I knew it would be miserable. I hoped it would be helpful and it was totally worth finding. Now I can’t keep one because family will grab them. They stayed close to me while I was there to get a part of the breeze that it generated. I am quite serious. You remember the paper fans we made in grade school? Do you remember how to make them? You need the stiffness of the wood or plastic as paper just cannot hold up to the movement. You can usually find one in the garish tourist items. And a cool wet cloth on the back of your neck. But the fan is the primary coolant. Try it! Seriously
I have spent a few nights in Italy with no AC at those temperatures. I always put a wet cold towel around my neck to help me sleep! You will get used to it. I think you have a fan, so that should help
#newsletterfam: My mum bought me a cool pillow which you put in the fridge during the day, you put it inside your pillow slip at night and it really helps you to get to sleep. It doesn't stay cold all night but does cool you enough to get to sleep which can feel impossible when it's really hot. LOVE frozen watermelon too! 😃

Last year, while studying for a college project, I discovered waterless coolants. They are used in car engines for better cooling. they don't get hot enough to boil, so the cooling system isn't pressurised, and as there is no water, the engine won't rust. Just an Idea for the next time you might need to change the coolant.

living in my van for 3 years now my summer- tricks:
* get up very early! especially at the seaside its super beautiful at 5am, bsfore the heat!
* take a siesta nap - not in the van, way too hot. get used to nap under a tree, in a park, get used to hanging out in public.
* solar powered roof vent that keeps running when not in the van keeps it cool during the midday heat.

#newsletterfam I stayed in the coastal region of my country, Kenya for a while. The locals taught me so many ways to stay cool during the hottest months of the year without access to air conditioning, indoor plumbing and fans or refrigeration. My favorite was showering outside at night. It was way out of my comfort zone but quite a thrill. It also made me appreciate a lot about simple luxuries that we take for granted. 😋

At my house, we don't have A/C. So one of my favorite ways to deal with the summer heat is to open all the windows at night, and close all the windows before the morning cloud cover burns off or before it gets too sunny. It keeps the house 10 degrees cooler, and you get to hear all the nice sounds of nature at night. Eating cool watermelon is also a fun way to keep cool too. #newsletterfam

I can’t deal with heat, unless I’m near water. My husband and I go to a state park lodge close to us and swim when it’s too hot to bare. It’s nice to lay out in as little as legally possible, and take dips in the cool water when it gets to be too much. I envy your clear water swim clips... they’re stunning. But I’ll just imagine that as I dip in the crowded pool next time.. I loveee your channel more than any others :) sorry about all your technical issues as of late. I’m convinced they make technology disposable now days, so you’re forced to buy new, it stinks. #newsletterfam

I went to Zion national park a few weeks ago and was like 103 degrees Fahrenheit. We forgot our tent fan so nobody slept the whole night. There was zero air circulation. It was not fun.
It always amazes me the things you pull out of that small van... a juicer for fresh lemon for example. It’s like a clown car for things!

it is a tortoise, but some people refer to turtles/tortoises/terrapins in a general term of "turtles" (and then specify "sea turtle" when talking about a...turtle, if you get me). its unusual but when i studied marine biology & zoology we were warned about this as we had lecturers from all over the world who would interchange between turtle as a general term and turtle meaning the one from the ocean :P

#newsletterfam: Something that I found surprisingly helpful in last year's heatwave (got to 42ºC in Portugal!) was a spray bottle filled with cold water. I would keep it in the fridge and spray it on me... it gives some good 20 minutes of nice, fresh relief while the water is evaporating, that feels like heaven in those times

Meteora was by far the the best place I visited in Greece! I didn't even know there was a hiking trail to see the monasteries. I just took a bus up there, what a mistake!
