Favorite Seiko Dive Watches

  • Dive watches have always been a favorite of mine...story at the beginning is included at no addtl charge! But autowinding dive watches never did it for me: there were always dead when I really needed them, requiring constant updates/time setting, and often broke. But the look of the dive watch is classic and clean. So I went on a hunt for updated, higher technology, more durable high value dive watches in Amazon. This is what I found and have been using since then: the Seiko SNE Solar powered quartz dive watches rated to 200M. Covered here are the Seiko SNE245, SNE107, SNE109 dive watches. They are a favorite of mine now. All the details are covered in this 3 for 1 watch review: aesthetics, accuracy, toughness, solar technology, comfort, quality, noise, legibility, bezel preciseness, hand accuracy, SAWC, illumination, and more. The orange banded SNE245 will be hard to find as it was a Japanese domestic market import to the US (hence more expensive). These are some of the best dive watches around for the money...especially since they are solar powered and very low maintenance.
Seiko Men's SNE109 200M Solar dive watch, cool orange face, urethane strap: amzn.to/2iPp8bP
Seiko Men's SNE107P2 200M Solar dive watch, black face, urethane strap:
    Seiko Men's SNE107 200M Solar dive watch w SS bracelet band: amzn.to/2jnjmBl
Seiko SNW391P1 100M Solar dive watch (very cool, own one), blue face, SS link band: amzn.to/2iTGUNr
Excellent Casio competitive options for $70!:
Casio MTD-1079D-1AVCF Super Illuminator dive watch (shown SS band replaced with Burton silicone, below): amzn.to/2iPgFp0

Seiko makes some of the best dive watches out there. Super reliable movements, whether quarts or mechanical. Mechanical Seikos are huge in the watch groups I belong to. Featured in a lot of movies/films as well. There are a million strap options (I find these with the humps at the lugs a little uncomfortable on my bony wrists) but very functional.

I have had Seiko divers since the early 80's when I started diving. Among then, the Arnold from the predator movies, the 007 and the new reissue of the Turtle of Vietnam war era. both are high quality and auto winding. I actually use mine swimming and SCUBA diving as well as everyday wear.

Totally agree. Can't beat Japanese for the money. Bang for buck, they blow Swiss timepieces out of the water (cheesy pun intended). For the money, Seiko, Citizen, and Orient are exceptional choices. One thing a new buyer needs to consider though is size of watch vs size of wrist. We prefer smaller watches with a more traditional look and fit. The current fashion/style has been larger sized watches which we despise but that's our personal preference. At the very least, a new watch buyer should make sure the lugs of the watch they're buying aren't going to overhang their wrist. It's best to try on before buying but you can also get the lug to lug measurement online and compare that to the measurement of the top of your wrist.

Not bad, but autos are too fussy for what they are. I made my own PMMM that is quite nice but they simply are not as reliable as a solar powered one. And I built/ refurbished/modded quite a few Seikos. I also have an Omega SMP auto and a Sinn 103. Traditional watches make no sense unless you have plenty of € £ $ to keep them running well. Casios are nice but those full featured monstrosities are for kids.

I hear you about the dive watch... My dad bought an awesome small Stihl chainsaw when I was a kid. Man did I lust over that thing. He always said he would give it to me someday. Fast forward 15 years later, the chainsaw had a minor problem, he dropped it off at the "repair shop" and 3 weeks later, they called and said it had been stollen... they gave my dad a new cheap Chinese made saw for the trouble... I didn't believe their story one second. That chainsaw was just too pretty...

Take a look at the Seiko Shogun (SBDC029 or SBDC007). Considered by a lot of people to be the "premier" Seiko dive watch. A lot of "dive watches" are designed to look good or targeted for recreational diving. The Shogun is a pro dive watch. What's features make a pro dive watch? It has to be big. At depth there isn't much light (you really want a solar watch?) and your brain is a little fuddled from the nitrogen. It has to be big so when you look at it what you're seeing gets through to you. The Shogun's big but it's made of titanium so it's really light. Secondly, you have to be able to rotate the bezel with your palm in a 1/4 inch neoprene mitt. The bezel's for measuring bottom time. You set it just before you go into the water -- after you're suited up. Most of the non-pro's fail this. They're bezels are more decorative than useful. Also, it has to turn only one way... to show you've been on the bottom longer if accidentally turned while in the water. Third, the band has to be big enough to fit around a wet suit wrist and ideally take up the slack as the suit compresses at depth. The Shogun has a titanium band (you get a rubber dive band too). If you use a rubber expanding band it really matters if it's a Japanese or Chinese Seiko band. At around $900 a great deal. Better than a Rolex submariner in my opinion. Just my 2 cents.

What the heck! I was waiting for the SKX models. Dude you just cant leave the most Iconic Japanese dive watch of all time off the list. Not, knocking your chosen models but they just dont hold a candle next to the SKX. One so inclined could easily spot many similarities between SKX and a Glock. Both are iconic, accurate(for the price), can take a beating, are in all kinds of cool movies(Apocalypse Now ring a bell?), the most modded items in there respected catagores and so forth. This could possibly be the only "Seiko Dive Watch" video on the internet that doesn't favor the absolute and unquestionably historic Seiko SKX. Yes, even in value.

I can't get him into them, guys. I've been pushing for one to be around for a while but he hates full steel and auto watches. They've come a long way since his piece o' shit 70's watch, and I've had pretty good track records with all mine over the years. If only the SK came in a poly or titanium case, then he'd be down. I don't have a Seiko straight, I have one of those Deep Blue Ripoffs, which is supposedly the SK movement stuck in a bigger case and face with an offset stem. I dig it, but it's just too heavy to get a recommend. :/ now if only I could get a seamaster pro. Doodle

Quartz is cool no doubt. But see how the likability is on a seiko SBDC007 titanium. Pricey and probably a new version is out by now, but Seiko does do titanium auto divers.

So cool to see you doing dive watches! Gotta check out Orient, sister company to Seiko in Japan, competitive products. I'm rocking the Orient Mako USA, Sapphire glass, drilled lugs, day/date, elegant, 120 click bezel, automatic, 200m diver for less than 200 new. They don't make them anymore but the Mako ii is very similar.

If you have to have a quartz diver, go Casio. If you prefer automatic divers, Seiko is hard to beat in the low/mid price range. I'm a big fan of the classic SKX (both 007 & 009) and the various Monsters (either orange or black ion). Moving up the food chain, horology snobs sneer at anything below Omega and Rolex.

I know the automatic watches aren't as accurate and require more maintenance, but there is something about a watch that has a smooth constant movement, as opposed to a quartz movement, and the craftsmanship that goes into an automatic watch. I have a Seiko Vampire Monster watch, and I wouldn't change a thing about it.

  • @mo_viking7075
    @mo_viking7075 7 ปีที่แล้ว

Good to hear you're into divers, my old monster doesn't get worn much these days but has never let me down, they are solid entry level divers, most watch guys have or have had one.
You might want to check out the "Deep Blue" brand, it's a step up that won't break the bank, (and if you don't want to keep it they sell second hand pretty quickly) most other autos are mechanical/automatic meaning you can hand wind it instead of having to shake it for 3-5 minutes when it has run down all the way.
Sorry but I have to, it's called a Dial, not a face, back or background, a Dial, and they're Hands not arms, (not trying to be picky here man, it's kinda like when a guy came up to my table at a show looking for a "Clip" for his S&W mod 19 like one that his friend had shown him, wth, after alot of back and forth turned out he was wanting a speed loader)
Informative and enjoyable vid as alway, keep em coming, later...

The solar variants have a translucent dial to let the light go through to the solar cell underneath because of this they fade easily especially the orange, also if you want to keep them working well, make sure they see plenty of sunlight or you put a bright desk light real close for a few hours every day, those solar watches have a really sensitive lithium battery that when dies looses half its life, and you'll need a service.

Should look into a Seiko gmt diver like the SUN019. Then you could set it for 2 timezones if you travel between the time zones.

Those straps aren't ventilated. Seiko puts the ribs in the straps so you can pull the strap tighter than normal so when your arm compresses under the pressure of the water the strap remains tight. FYI on telling a Japanese made model vs Malaysian is the letter in the model number. A j in the model is Japanese manufactured. A k in the model number is Malaysian made.

I know this is off topic but I would love to see you review the KA-BAR 7503 Jarosz Turok... seems like a strong camp knife/bushcrafter. Curious how it would rate. Thanks for all the great content

Another great brand and almost unheard of in the US is the Orient brand, an older brand now owned by Seiko and very high quality and low price. Check out the orient Mako watches.

LOL...!,, those big fat dive watches are so 80s,,, I can't relate as I have not owned a wrist watch since about 2003,,,, I don't miss the tan line a watch band leaves.
I'm so reliant on my Samsung Galaxy, it's my phone/clock/camera/voice recorder/video-cam, everything in one so much so that I have not even thought about buying a watch or camera in years.

Eh, I don't think there's much more breadth that he hasn't accessed he's into already. We've had people want HAM stuff for years, but it just ain't our thing. Besidees, we'd be starting from scratch, so it wouldn't be too great. :/ Watches kinda came as a surprise, but I can't picture much more stuff out there yet. -TD

Thanks for the review but I actually prefer a busy watch face. Just personal taste.

Seiko auto dives suck. My skx171 runs 4 to 5 min a week slow. 2nd skx171 as the first was replaced under warranty and its slow as well. Too bad seiko wants the cost of a new one to fix the one I have. My first 007 p3psi dial was a real trooper. Lasted 15 years kept perfect time.

Cool watches, but I don't ever dive anywhere. If I ever have to go deep at all, hopefully the ProTrek can handle it.

Hey are you using a new camera? there seems to be some screen tearing around the 4:43 mark. Only when things are moving though. just something i have not noticed in your other videos

Do you know why dive watches are supposed to have an Orange face? Because it is the color that best displays at lower depths !

I used to collect very high end watches and I liked wearing them for fashion mostly. I made the mistake of buying an Apple Watch, now I've gotten so used to the functionality that I won't wear anything else.
