So a couple of people have left comments correcting me - the ground pound jump was not introduced in the switch port. It was, in fact, in the original game on Wii U. I mixed this up with the newly added ability to ground pound into a pipe to go down a bit quicker. Apologies! Thank you all for watching nonetheless!
Well I was still a two year old toddler when the Wii u came out, but I was able to experience it on the switch port and it sure is my most favourite 3d Mario game
I think people came around and started appreciating 3D World when Odyssey came out. 3D World suffered from coming out at a time when its gameplay style was unwanted.
The reason for the utilization of a run button and the movement being locked to 8 directions is because the game was designed to be played with single Wii remotes
3D World is such an interesting Mario game, because it manages to feel unique by staying simple. Your takeaway at the end was perfect. The pressure to constantly outdo everything can be suffocating, and not everything has to be a groundbreaking masterpiece to still have value. I feel like I understand this game even better now, really great job with this one!
As much as everyone wants to push themselves into new directions, it's comforting to hear someone just talk about something they dig. I think that can be just as fulfilling as trying something new. It's good to hear that you're taking both sides of the coin into consideration with your work and the way you used Super Mario 3D World as a framing device of that attitude was a very thoughtful move. Looking forward to more videos from you in the future. Keep at it and take care. 👍
I'm glad this game got a second chance at life with it's Switch Port, feels like a lot of people have softened up towards it since then *3D World was one of the few games I had on my Wii U so I loved it a lot, especially playing the multiplayer with my friends*
Can we just take a second and really think about how the plot of this game even happened. Mario and the gang found a broken pipe that was right next to peaches castle, a pipe that they apparently never knew about and could take them to an entirely different kingdom. This also means that Bowser somehow had to sneak his army into this pipe without anybody noticing and the pipe then somehow broke
I love 3D World. It is my 4th favorite Mario game! It’s just such a “Mario” Mario game. And by “Mario” I mean just lavishing in the fun factor and creativity of it all
7:50 The Ground Pound Jump was actually first introduced in 3D World on the Wii U :) Oh and thank you for this amazing video on one of my favourite Games!
30:14 Totally agreed with this. I replayed the game with a friend when it came out on Switch (whom had never played it before), and multiplayer absolutely made it 200% harder. We also had a lot of genuinely laugh out loud moments, so it was more than a worthwhile trade. And yes, we did fight incessantly over the crown as well. If anything, this was my issue with Mario Wonder's co-op: by removing collision, you've basically removed any and all friction when playing with together, which in some sense was part of the appeal. Wonder's co-op feels so distant and impersonal, almost like we're playing in separate instances of the game; I wasn't really a fan. On the other hand, I love 3D World. It's such a vibrant, versatile game. If anything, I think the Switch's speed boosts to the characters were a little over the top. I remember one mystery box challenge where you have to run on speed ramps across slim bridges. But because you're already moving so fast, hitting the speed boosts basically spells instant death, so you have to instead try to jump over all them, which was definitely not the original intent. But that's ultimately a small price to pay for online multiplayer and Bowser's Fury.
Seeing one of my favourite games of all time being spoken about in such a positive way is super refreshing to see. Loved every moment of this and although I think your opinion on Honeycomb Starway is insane, the rest for sure makes up for that. Keep up the work excited to see what’s up next!
3D World may not be revolutionary, but I can’t deny the sheer enjoyment and fun of it when playing with friends! Genuinely one of the most fun multiplayer games out there. Loved the vid man! You did great and hope to see you evolve more!
Another Kohana banger! I never really gave this game much thought, probably due to NSMB fatigue disinteresting me from 2D Mario for a while, and honestly I just assumed the levels were going to be uninteresting or samey. This video showed me just how wrong I was, so many of these levels look so fun and I could absolutely see this being a game that I play through in the future!
I hated Super Mario 3D World when it first came out. All I wanted was Super Mario Galaxy 3. Over the years, I've come to adore and absolutely love 3D World. It is, hands down, my favourite Mario game of all time. I'll never forget Champion's Road and how many times it kicked my ass 😅
I was starting high school when this game came out on the Wii U. And reviews from TH-camrs gaslit me into thinking Mario should be the exact opposite of what people thought this game represented, but to be fair, this was a Wii U exclusive at first before it was ported to the switch. And the Wii U was the where Nintendo thought they could do no wrong.
I conflated 3d world and 3d land when I got world on my wii u, and I was not disappointed. I noticed nintendo going stale with the new super mario bros on wii just being classic mario upscaled with new items and designs but 3d world felt fresh in the same way playing metroid prime with motion controls feels fresh. No, theyre not doing anything new, really. But they didnt need to, for me to have a whole lot of fun! :D
i loved 3d world. i loved playing toad and being really fast. i also loved how new it was with some if the power-ups, collectables, level, enemies and so on. it saddens me how i have heard some people hate on it so much. the only the i would say i did not like would be the sharing of lives and not being able to save yourself like in the 2d game when you can put yourself in a bubble
Yet another good review. I dont agree with you on the right direction being the best because although it is good for going on narrow platforms, it would be quite annoying for general platforming. That combined with the weird camera made it infuriating to do some jumps that I had no control over. The music in this game is probably my favorite next to Galaxy, that big band vibe is immaculate. Also idk how many puns there are in this video but I caught two of them around the 15 minute mark :)
I love this game but my only problem is the switch version is too fast, I would love if I had the option to put normal speed. The levels is design to be at normal speed. I fell down numerous times due to the fact fast speed and sometimes it’s hard to see the perspective, it be off.
Of all the 3D Mario games I've play, 3D World is my absolute favorite. I know alot of people would lean towards 64, Galaxy or Odyssey as there favorite and those are great games. Well more so with Galaxy & Odyssey anyway. But for me, 3D World and to some extent; 3D Land, is exactly what I wanted in an 3D Mario game. An 3D game plays like an 2D game. But what makes 3D World better than 3D Land is the more expanded levels, the challenge, more power-ups, better boss variation, the atmosphere & content. You got long jumps & few other movesets, collectables and other elements from previous 3D Mario games that are much more sensitive & easy to pick up without being an chore or tedious and the power-ups aren't as situational & temporarily as the open-sandbox 3d Mario games suffered from. I hope the next 3D Mario game will go back to how it was with 3D World.
Super Mario 3D World may never reach my top 5 Super Mario games, but it definitely does belong in my top 10 Super Mario games, for all the reasons that you listed. Thank you for such a good, thorough review.
The 'New' series was literally 4 games. That is certainly NOT repetitive, each game was unique enough to stand out from eachother, not to mention (originally) two being portable, and two console games... it makes sense with marketing and it also makes sense for the fanbase. The newer series is just fine and people nitpick it to shit way too much.
Ehh i feel like more context is needed At the end of the Wii era and throughout the Wii U era there was a real big "Mario Fatigue" problem. 3d mario games, 2d mario games, Sports games, and Paper Mario all had the NSMB, corporate safe, basic mario aesthetic and people were getting sick of it very VERY fast. The fact that NSMB U released at the same time as 2 didnt help this in the slightest (especially when 2's coin gimmick seemed tacked on and didn't really change it from being a stock standard mario romp) People at the time we're yearning for the past and wanted something creative and bold again, which definitely hurt U and 2's reputation as games.
It is if 3 out of 4 games came out in the span of 3 years with minimal grafical and sound improvement, especially after many other games started to adopt the NSMBWii astethic. Mario Party 9 is a prime example as it reuses not only the graphics of almost everything, but also sounds and replicates animations from that game (Mario and Luigi's jump animation is a 1/1 recreation of one from NSMB) Mario Golf World Tour has 4 of the 6 DLC courses based on the worlds of NSMBU. Now that wouldn't be a problem if those were actual new courses and not the ones from the N64 title with a rebranding
I don’t know about you, but people loved the game when it came out. Praising everything about it. Sure people still wanted a real 3D Mario but people still loved it
My gf and i played through the re -release on switch recently i hadn't played it since its original release on the wii u Shes never played it It was such a fun experience, tons of laughs even with joy con drift Some laughs actually occured due to joycon drift 😂😂 Such a great game though hope we get something like it again honestly.

Same for my buddy (far left 🦉 on the pic) however I typically prefer either SMW or SMB3.

it is probably my favourite but its definitely not the best

14:12 the blocks perfectly align with the background music
3D World is such an underrated gem in the 3D Mario catalog. Drfinitley one of the most fun multiplayer experiences for any video game imo
I've always felt indiffrent to 3D World, but now having played it recently and knowing what I like in Platformers, this game is fun.

I like the physics in this game. You have quite some in-air control during a jump before you land.
awesome video man.
3D World will always hold a special place in my heart as the first game I ever beat on my own
Good video, nice conclusion
dude star stories is such an amazing album hell yeah to you for using it
Great take. This is my favorite Mario game and fun to see it get some love.

3d land and world deserves zero hate, I don’t care if there bland, as long as their fun and graphicly impressive
