@david burrus I've seen people do it and heard people say it and have even done it myself. When I was younger playing World at War Final Fronts on ps2 it was spelled "M1 Grand," so for a long time I said and spelled it "Grand" until I learned that it was "Garand." Now that I'm looking back on it, I think I might have saw "Garand" and just misinterpreted it as "Grand." It's been so long that I do not remember anymore. Also I didn't hang around anybody who really knew about guns, so there was no one to correct that bad habit.

As an American who has been punching holes in paper targets with handguns for 40 years, I find your beginner's take on handguns to be very interesting. In my experience, no one shoots from the hip. Hardly anyone takes the duelist stance (arm extended fully towards the target). The reason for that is purely functional. It is far more accurate to shoot with both hands on the pistol because it gives you greater stability. After a while, you cease to be a fantasy gun-slinger and forget the firearm's anti-personnel capabilities. When you shoot paper targets, that becomes the firearm's purpose and all you think about is improving your technique so as to concentrate your fire into the smallest grouping. Does a Brit actually have to leave the UK to get an opportunity to fire a handgun?

My grandfather was a Spanish republican. He witnessed the 1934 revolt in Asturias, he fought in the Spanish Civil War on the government side (losing a leg in the process), as a refugee in France he joined the Maquis and knew people who went back into Spain in the 1950s in attempts to overthrow Franco. He showed me how he used a pistol. On the hip so no visible profile of a weapon, tucked in close to his body to steady it and so that it couldn’t be knocked to one side by the target, he would get as close as possible to the target which would keep the noise down and presumably saved bullets. A fairly particular approach I think you will agree. (Ps. I’m a British)

Lindy, I know the revolver was unloaded during the discussion at 9:50, but please please please, never have your finger on the trigger unless you're about to intentionally fire. Loaded or not, its about forming muscle memory. If you watch the video back, you can even see your co-host's eyes dart back and forth between you and the weapon in what I assume in nervousness.
Normally I would say you are just being a Safety Sally, but his finger was naturally glued to the trigger in a pretty uncomfortable bad habit. His inexperience with firearms is pretty obvious though and it would probably be a lot better if he actually owned one to shoot more often.
You can do practical shooting in the UK though as well as owning the exact same firearms our military uses bar the L85A2 since there's no civilian version. You can own the Accuracy International, Glock, Benelli M4 and even fully working ex service tanks although you can't shoot them with anything other than solid non explosive rounds which i imagine are expensive

Public opinion doesn't matter, if it was up to the public hunting would be banned and all guns would be illegal and the country would cease to function. We as gun owners have facts and statistics on our side, anti gun/hunting lot have nothing to go on and in fact the law was recently changed in favour of gun owners to stop expanding bullets being classed as section 5. Even politicians have admitted that the gun laws are fucked going even as far as admitting the handgun ban was uncalled for
Public opinion is against guns but the government has already stated off the record that they will never completely ban firearms as they need to maintain a 'viable stock' of trained persons to wage a war if its needed. As a firearms competition shooter I think the UK laws are a joke, they're just as prevalent if not more so in gangs and illegal firearms are taken nearly every week/month in smuggling stings Also Lindy needs to stop going to Switzerland and do this at a local club. The safety Nazi in me could not help but flinch at the end bit where he points the firearm around WITH HIS FINGER on the trigger. He violated at least three of the four basic safety procedures in that scene. Bad Lindy; no cookie for you, or your instructor!
Three points: 1) How natural did it really feel hip/center firing the revolver? My first instinct has always been to either hold the gun with two hands to keep it steady at eye level. Maybe I was infuenced subconsciously by movies and TV, but that made the most intuitive sense to me. I have a hard time inagining how anyone would be more comfortable shooting from the hip. 2) People who are used to semi-automatic pistols know the feel of the trigger and how much pressure to apply in order to fire. A novice is HIGHLY likely to fire prematurely because of the low travel of the trigger and relatively low force needed. That's 1 point for the trigger safety people. I shudder to think how many have been injured or killed by unintentional trigger pulls. 3) A point for the trigger safety fanatics out there: When Lindy is sitting at a table with an unloaded revolver, that has been checked beforehand, and has no ammunition in its barrel, it is okay for Lindy to have his finger on the trigger! These people are not unsupervised children, and the gun must be respected, but not revered as a sacred object like when a 13-year old anime fan thinks a samurai's blade must taste blood once unsheathed. Without ammunition, a revolver is no more dangerous than any other blunt object, and if both adults present in the room are aware that the gun is safe, then by all means Wyatt Earp it up.
It's more of a habit thing, as well as something for people to complain about, but you could even tell the other guy, who knew it wasn't loaded, was bothered by the lack of trigger discipline. It's a habit that you get drilled into your head very quickly when handling guns. Even I was bothered by it and I've only gone hunting with my dad once and have shot guns 4 other times recreationally
@Grim reaper umm, i hope you were just trying to add Drama by overacting it. Think about D-Day, the Battles ok Okinawa and Iwo Jima and such. Hundreds fell there per hour and i dont think any of that was unintentional. So if really more people died from guns by accident then willingly, overpopulation wouldnt be a thing.

When I was in the military I was taught that if I ever had to draw a handgun and fire at someone who is extremely close you do essentially what lindybeige was saying. draw the gun and fire the first round from the hip. But then basically continue firing the handgun as you raise it up to your line of sight. Then once you get it to your line of sight get the more accurate shots off. Modern hand guns have 16-17 round magazines so the basic theory is if he is that close to you just put as many rounds Dow range as fast as possible, the odds of hitting him are really high and you have plenty of follow up shots.
Modern pistols are pretty incredible tools. The new carry pistols fit in your hand, conceal easily, are reasonably accurate, are chambered in effective calibers, and hold up to 13 rounds ready to go. That is quite an achievement in gunsmithing.
I have always enjoyed watching people like you fire a rifle and now a handgun for the first time. It's easy to see that you had lots of fun and you're no longer afraid of firearms.

However I never expect intelligent examples from the movie industry,although they, (it can only be hoped) are not muddling about with real weapons on screen ,six shooters that fire a dozen times non stop and all that though one actor was killed by firing a blank pistol at his head once...

I absolutely love my Webley-Scott revolvers (one .38 Mk VI, like the one you fired, and one .455 Mk IV, from the Great War). Hands down, the most beautiful Victorian handgun ever produced, even when it’s put up against the .45 Colt SA Army. It just screams “This is a professional military sidearm.” In my own opinion, of course.
Hi! A former conscript sergeant here. I've trained gun safety to recruits so here's to anyone doing this for the first time. The 5 basic steps of handling a gun safely: 1. Maintain your weapon. A clean firearm is far less likely to misfire. Cleaning your gun should happen every time you fire it. 2. Handle your weapon in a way the barrel never points to anything you don't want to shoot, particularly anyone's bodyparts. Even when you think there are no rounds in your weapon. Mistakes happen. 3. Keep the safety switch always on, only turn it off right before taking a shot. Putting it back on afterwards EVERY time should be your second nature. 4. This one doesn't apply to revolvers as it's impossible after you've loaded it. Will write it anyway. Never keep a bullet in the barrel of your weapon until you are ready to shoot. If rounds remain afterwards, unload the barrel and put the rounds back into your clip or the box of ammo. 5. The most important one. Keep your finger off the trigger until you want to shoot, and afterwards revert back to it immediately. Keep your finger straight, resting on the side of your weapon. Like you were shooting with your fingers. You are far more likely to make a mistake than it is likely for your weapon to do something unintended on its own. Human error is the most likely cause of accidents. When we were first taught about firing a weapon, they wouldn't let us load our weapons until they were sure we could control our trigger finger. There are a few more things I could say but these should get you started.
Those are not the gun safely rules, neither are they all accurate. In combat you do not want to be walking around with an unchambered weapon. That's just one of the rules to got wrong. I don't know what recruits you were training but I hope they're all still alive. As someone else already posted, there are 4 gun safety rules and if everyone follows them no one will get shot (unnecesarilly). Any other rules about firearms are supplementary. It is completely absurd that the number one rule of gun safety is to maintain your weapon.
For the record, these rules are for peace-time barracks conductment for when there are 1500 other people around that are just as inexperienced at handling a firearm as you are, not for the battlefield. I'd imagine many people from the USA that are not from the big cities have been handling a firearm since they were 16 so you really have a different perspective here. Most people in Europe only handle a firearm for the first time when they enter the defense forces so these rules are for that situation. By no means should they be taken as rules for every situation.
You should really work on not putting your finger on the trigger unless you are actually shooting. instead lay your trigger finger along the side of the frame.

I'm a 65 year old American, and I've been shooting all kinds of firearms (and reloading for them, and all other things connected with firearms) since I was 5 years old. I will say: You're a natural! You did abnormally well at this. You should move to America as soon as possible.
If you do instictive shooting for a while, it is no problem to hit a can at 20 meters from the hip. One old guy I saw, hit 25 clays in a row while trap shooting from the hip. Mister stabby from Shanghai actually filed the sights off the pistols his officers used to force them to aquire this instinctive shooting style, and it actually works very well. The Enfield has a very heavy trigger pull, but it is also the reason I have a very strong trigger finger. :)
Token American here, regarding the "hair trigger" of the automatic pistol you fired: In modern shooting discipline, it's considered ideal that the shot itself is always a "surprise" - this way, you can focus entirely on the fundamentals (proper stance; adequate grip with as much contact and support as possible; correct sight alignment, focusing on the front sight; smooth, consistent trigger pull). If you master these four concepts and can ignore the "bang" (not even anticipate it), you're able to take advantage of all the technology that's gone into firearms since the advent of the first auto-loading pistols and enhance your effective accuracy. If I was teaching you how to shoot and there was one major thing I'd have you adjust, it's your stance. You want to bear down on the handgun to absorb as much recoil as possible - this allows for more rapid and accurate follow-up shots, and you do that with any firearm (doesn't matter if it's a .22 pistol or a .50cal rifle). I bet if you braced forward more, you'd be able to retain and slightly enhance the accuracy you already have, plus decrease the amount of time between shots to re-align the sights.
the last couple minutes his finger was constantly on the trigger. I don't care whether it is loaded or unloaded, don't have your finger on the trigger if you don't plan to shoot.
Even in the first seconds he grabs a gun, the finger is already on a trigger. I literally stopped the video to scroll down to comments and find out that i'm not the only one, who got frustrated by this. And i'm not by a long shot a gun person, no pun intended.
Another great video i only have one piece of constructive criticism, always, no matter what firearm, keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you intend to shoot. it is very important to drill that into muscle memory in order to help prevent negligent or accidental discharge of your weapon. also good work on learning how to shoot you are doing quite well.

Jeff Vick Every adult beginner shooter has trigger discipline issuse especially in the classroom with a checked and double checked firearm. Pick up the windex bottle where do you put your finger? Pump gas where will the finger go? Its the only item they have handled with special rules for the trigger. No excuse, but if he keeps shooting he will get it. This was (to my knowledge) only his 2nd time on a range. Id love if he came to my range.

Just a Lurker M-1911 and M-1911a1 were used internationally. Even Germans used them from a captured Norwegian manufacturer. They have to be available, and Lindybeige seems able to track one down.

The whole opening sequence has me twitching as weapons instructor. Treat every weapon as if it were loaded. Keep your finger straight and off the trigger until you intend to fire. Never point your weapon at anything you don't intend to shoot. Keep your weapon on safe until you intend to fire.
I went to a defensive pistol class, and we drew from a holster and fired 2-6 shots at a time at a human sized target roughly 5 yards in front of us. We were taught to use both hands and aim down the sights, and I remain convinced that shooting from the hip would have led to a massive increase in inaccuracy while not being any faster whatsoever.
I could rant about trigger discipline and dry-firing, but then I'm just a jealous English limey that has to jump through a thousand hoops just to sniff a firearm. Thanks for sharing it all Lloyd, encore, and splendid shooting progression.
Funnily enough, it's also the 'correct' way to shoot accurately. While the revolver is merely an extension of one of his arms, the most accurate shooting is a full body exercise involving aligning your shoulders to your arm and ahead of your centre of mass, your waist to your shoulders, with your feet in an athletic ready position, knees slightly bent and no rotation in your core. Micro-adjustments are performed by slightly rotating your core. Large adjustments are made by starting again.
Also, as clunky as that sounds it's done seamlessly without conscious thought after a couple of days drilling it down to a science. Fire 12,000 rounds with bad posture and you'll never forget it.

jo blogs its probably more a response to the idea that it was faster to draw and fire from the hip in that low stance. They practiced it at short ranges only. After all, your pistol was your back up if you were out if rifle ammo or come upon suddenly.

I also recall hearing something about how many law enforcement shooting instructors were hired based on their success in shooting sports, which lead to a bias in favor of gun types and shooting stances that worked well in competitions.
Don't forget that WW1 was all about trench warfare - and often the long guns could be difficult to maneuver in trenches during trench raids. Add to that the trench clubs, and it could be very beneficial to be crouched and not have your head where a head should be. Also take in to account that most of those raids occurred at night, and more often than not, you were shooting towards vague shapes in the darkness as it were, so aiming properly wasn't going to improve much in regard to hitting anything.
Hey Lindy, love the channel. You really, really need to work on your trigger discipline. Bloke was visibly uncomfortable when you had your finger on the trigger.
He was eyeing your terrible trigger discipline the WHOLE time you were sitting at the table, he seemed uncomfortable. Even when you know a firearm is unloaded, even if it is new from the factory, even if its a prop and literally can't fire any ammunition, you should ALWAYS keep your finger off of the trigger. It sounds petty, I know, but the more that it becomes muscle memory to keep your finger outside of the trigger guard at all times, the less likely you are to ever accidentally (NEGLIGENTLY) discharge a firearm. I enjoy all of your content and I'm not trying to be an ass, I just wanted to help you.
I have used a real firearm twice on a shooting range and besides that I play Airsoft and I sometimes find myself holding finger off the trigger even when I'm in the middle of a BB exchange...
That level of mincing about with the gun is completely unnecessary. If you know the firearm is unloaded and have verified it as such it doesn't matter if your finger's on the trigger cause it's not gonna fire regardless. As for doing it even with something you _know_ cannot possibly fire a round, that's just flat-out ridiculous. If someone's waving about something which very much looks like a firearm with their finger on the trigger and you have not yourself verified it as unloaded, that would be an uncontrolled situation and therefore unsafe. But in a controlled situation with something that is known to contain no ammunition it's not necessary at all. If you need to do that because you can't tell the difference between controlled and uncontrolled situations/can't remember whether you unloaded the gun or not, you shouldn't be handling a firearm in the first place.

Lindy isn't a gun owner (as far as i know) but as long as you're under supervision of someone who knows gun safety there's not really an issue. I was eyeing his trigger safety too but i'm subbed to bloke on the range so i know nothing could have happened

As an American who has been punching holes in paper targets with handguns for 40 years, I find your beginner's take on handguns to be very interesting. In my experience, no one shoots from the hip. Hardly anyone takes the duelist stance (arm extended fully towards the target). The reason for that is purely functional. It is far more accurate to shoot with both hands on the pistol because it gives you greater stability.
After a while, you cease to be a fantasy gun-slinger and forget the firearm's anti-personnel capabilities. When you shoot paper targets, that becomes the firearm's purpose and all you think about is improving your technique so as to concentrate your fire into the smallest grouping.

He showed me how he used a pistol.
On the hip so no visible profile of a weapon, tucked in close to his body to steady it and so that it couldn’t be knocked to one side by the target, he would get as close as possible to the target which would keep the noise down and presumably saved bullets.
A fairly particular approach I think you will agree.

Lindy, I know the revolver was unloaded during the discussion at 9:50, but please please please, never have your finger on the trigger unless you're about to intentionally fire. Loaded or not, its about forming muscle memory. If you watch the video back, you can even see your co-host's eyes dart back and forth between you and the weapon in what I assume in nervousness.

You can do practical shooting in the UK though as well as owning the exact same firearms our military uses bar the L85A2 since there's no civilian version. You can own the Accuracy International, Glock, Benelli M4 and even fully working ex service tanks although you can't shoot them with anything other than solid non explosive rounds which i imagine are expensive

Public opinion doesn't matter, if it was up to the public hunting would be banned and all guns would be illegal and the country would cease to function. We as gun owners have facts and statistics on our side, anti gun/hunting lot have nothing to go on and in fact the law was recently changed in favour of gun owners to stop expanding bullets being classed as section 5. Even politicians have admitted that the gun laws are fucked going even as far as admitting the handgun ban was uncalled for
Public opinion is against guns but the government has already stated off the record that they will never completely ban firearms as they need to maintain a 'viable stock' of trained persons to wage a war if its needed.

Three points:
1) How natural did it really feel hip/center firing the revolver? My first instinct has always been to either hold the gun with two hands to keep it steady at eye level. Maybe I was infuenced subconsciously by movies and TV, but that made the most intuitive sense to me. I have a hard time inagining how anyone would be more comfortable shooting from the hip.
2) People who are used to semi-automatic pistols know the feel of the trigger and how much pressure to apply in order to fire. A novice is HIGHLY likely to fire prematurely because of the low travel of the trigger and relatively low force needed. That's 1 point for the trigger safety people. I shudder to think how many have been injured or killed by unintentional trigger pulls.
3) A point for the trigger safety fanatics out there: When Lindy is sitting at a table with an unloaded revolver, that has been checked beforehand, and has no ammunition in its barrel, it is okay for Lindy to have his finger on the trigger! These people are not unsupervised children, and the gun must be respected, but not revered as a sacred object like when a 13-year old anime fan thinks a samurai's blade must taste blood once unsheathed. Without ammunition, a revolver is no more dangerous than any other blunt object, and if both adults present in the room are aware that the gun is safe, then by all means Wyatt Earp it up.
I think the whole trigger discipline thing is more of a habit, so you are less likely to slip up when handling a loaded weapon.
It's more of a habit thing, as well as something for people to complain about, but you could even tell the other guy, who knew it wasn't loaded, was bothered by the lack of trigger discipline. It's a habit that you get drilled into your head very quickly when handling guns. Even I was bothered by it and I've only gone hunting with my dad once and have shot guns 4 other times recreationally
Rule number one of gun safety is give every gun the respect due of a loaded gun. It's just common sense.

When I was in the military I was taught that if I ever had to draw a handgun and fire at someone who is extremely close you do essentially what lindybeige was saying. draw the gun and fire the first round from the hip. But then basically continue firing the handgun as you raise it up to your line of sight. Then once you get it to your line of sight get the more accurate shots off.
Modern hand guns have 16-17 round magazines so the basic theory is if he is that close to you just put as many rounds Dow range as fast as possible, the odds of hitting him are really high and you have plenty of follow up shots.

Modern pistols are pretty incredible tools. The new carry pistols fit in your hand, conceal easily, are reasonably accurate, are chambered in effective calibers, and hold up to 13 rounds ready to go. That is quite an achievement in gunsmithing.
I have always enjoyed watching people like you fire a rifle and now a handgun for the first time. It's easy to see that you had lots of fun and you're no longer afraid of firearms.

The Universal Firearms Safety Rules are not up for debate. This kind of negligent attitude is how people get shot.
I absolutely love my Webley-Scott revolvers (one .38 Mk VI, like the one you fired, and one .455 Mk IV, from the Great War).
Hands down, the most beautiful Victorian handgun ever produced, even when it’s put up against the .45 Colt SA Army. It just screams “This is a professional military sidearm.” In my own opinion, of course.

Hi! A former conscript sergeant here. I've trained gun safety to recruits so here's to anyone doing this for the first time. The 5 basic steps of handling a gun safely:
1. Maintain your weapon. A clean firearm is far less likely to misfire. Cleaning your gun should happen every time you fire it.
2. Handle your weapon in a way the barrel never points to anything you don't want to shoot, particularly anyone's bodyparts. Even when you think there are no rounds in your weapon. Mistakes happen.
3. Keep the safety switch always on, only turn it off right before taking a shot. Putting it back on afterwards EVERY time should be your second nature.
4. This one doesn't apply to revolvers as it's impossible after you've loaded it. Will write it anyway.
Never keep a bullet in the barrel of your weapon until you are ready to shoot. If rounds remain afterwards, unload the barrel and put the rounds back into your clip or the box of ammo.
5. The most important one. Keep your finger off the trigger until you want to shoot, and afterwards revert back to it immediately. Keep your finger straight, resting on the side of your weapon. Like you were shooting with your fingers.
You are far more likely to make a mistake than it is likely for your weapon to do something unintended on its own. Human error is the most likely cause of accidents.
When we were first taught about firing a weapon, they wouldn't let us load our weapons until they were sure we could control our trigger finger.
There are a few more things I could say but these should get you started.
If you're carry concealed, I'd highly recommend keeping one in the chamber.

Those are not the gun safely rules, neither are they all accurate. In combat you do not want to be walking around with an unchambered weapon. That's just one of the rules to got wrong. I don't know what recruits you were training but I hope they're all still alive. As someone else already posted, there are 4 gun safety rules and if everyone follows them no one will get shot (unnecesarilly). Any other rules about firearms are supplementary. It is completely absurd that the number one rule of gun safety is to maintain your weapon.
For the record, these rules are for peace-time barracks conductment for when there are 1500 other people around that are just as inexperienced at handling a firearm as you are, not for the battlefield.
I'd imagine many people from the USA that are not from the big cities have been handling a firearm since they were 16 so you really have a different perspective here. Most people in Europe only handle a firearm for the first time when they enter the defense forces so these rules are for that situation.
By no means should they be taken as rules for every situation.
You should really work on not putting your finger on the trigger unless you are actually shooting. instead lay your trigger finger along the side of the frame.

If you do instictive shooting for a while, it is no problem to hit a can at 20 meters from the hip. One old guy I saw, hit 25 clays in a row while trap shooting from the hip. Mister stabby from Shanghai actually filed the sights off the pistols his officers used to force them to aquire this instinctive shooting style, and it actually works very well.
The Enfield has a very heavy trigger pull, but it is also the reason I have a very strong trigger finger. :)

Token American here, regarding the "hair trigger" of the automatic pistol you fired:
In modern shooting discipline, it's considered ideal that the shot itself is always a "surprise" - this way, you can focus entirely on the fundamentals (proper stance; adequate grip with as much contact and support as possible; correct sight alignment, focusing on the front sight; smooth, consistent trigger pull). If you master these four concepts and can ignore the "bang" (not even anticipate it), you're able to take advantage of all the technology that's gone into firearms since the advent of the first auto-loading pistols and enhance your effective accuracy.
If I was teaching you how to shoot and there was one major thing I'd have you adjust, it's your stance. You want to bear down on the handgun to absorb as much recoil as possible - this allows for more rapid and accurate follow-up shots, and you do that with any firearm (doesn't matter if it's a .22 pistol or a .50cal rifle). I bet if you braced forward more, you'd be able to retain and slightly enhance the accuracy you already have, plus decrease the amount of time between shots to re-align the sights.

Another great video i only have one piece of constructive criticism, always, no matter what firearm, keep your finger out of the trigger guard until you intend to shoot. it is very important to drill that into muscle memory in order to help prevent negligent or accidental discharge of your weapon.

Hey Lindy, can you do a video on whether its viable to use a greatsword in one hand and shield in another?

Amar Ramic its not. A greatsword is generally speaking way too heavy to be used effectively in one hand, also it wouldnt have much of an advantage. I guess that very strong people could do that, but it would be very tiring for no reason at all.

Watch this video of someone trying to handle a greatsword single handedly, and ask yourself the question if you really wanted to act like that on a battlefield
It would be way too heavy and unwieldy. You _could_ do it but you'd be extremely easy to defeat cause the sword would be controlling you rather than the other way round.

Jeff Vick Every adult beginner shooter has trigger discipline issuse especially in the classroom with a checked and double checked firearm. Pick up the windex bottle where do you put your finger? Pump gas where will the finger go? Its the only item they have handled with special rules for the trigger. No excuse, but if he keeps shooting he will get it. This was (to my knowledge) only his 2nd time on a range. Id love if he came to my range.
Same. In that last segment, "Bloke on the range" (or whatever his name was) was giving Lloyd some nervous sideways looks, too.
Then once it's drilled into you you'll index Windex bottles, drills, etc. as well.

I gotta say, as an American (whose country is divided over the gun issue) who loves guns and gets anxiety from beginners, you did a phenomenal job. Trigger discipline, common sense, listening to instructor, you got it all perfect buddy. This is how it’s done.

Just a Lurker M-1911 and M-1911a1 were used internationally. Even Germans used them from a captured Norwegian manufacturer. They have to be available, and Lindybeige seems able to track one down.

I didn't say that they were totally unavailable, just that they wouldn't be nearly as common as they are stateside. Especially if we're talking about an authentic government issue one.

I went to a defensive pistol class, and we drew from a holster and fired 2-6 shots at a time at a human sized target roughly 5 yards in front of us. We were taught to use both hands and aim down the sights, and I remain convinced that shooting from the hip would have led to a massive increase in inaccuracy while not being any faster whatsoever.
I could rant about trigger discipline and dry-firing, but then I'm just a jealous English limey that has to jump through a thousand hoops just to sniff a firearm. Thanks for sharing it all Lloyd, encore, and splendid shooting progression.

Funnily enough, it's also the 'correct' way to shoot accurately. While the revolver is merely an extension of one of his arms, the most accurate shooting is a full body exercise involving aligning your shoulders to your arm and ahead of your centre of mass, your waist to your shoulders, with your feet in an athletic ready position, knees slightly bent and no rotation in your core. Micro-adjustments are performed by slightly rotating your core. Large adjustments are made by starting again.
Also, as clunky as that sounds it's done seamlessly without conscious thought after a couple of days drilling it down to a science. Fire 12,000 rounds with bad posture and you'll never forget it.
the low down shooting style was probably used because people got used to fanning single action pistols which you can only do by your hip, the technology evolved faster than the technique, probably

jo blogs its probably more a response to the idea that it was faster to draw and fire from the hip in that low stance. They practiced it at short ranges only. After all, your pistol was your back up if you were out if rifle ammo or come upon suddenly.

I also recall hearing something about how many law enforcement shooting instructors were hired based on their success in shooting sports, which lead to a bias in favor of gun types and shooting stances that worked well in competitions.
Don't forget that WW1 was all about trench warfare - and often the long guns could be difficult to maneuver in trenches during trench raids. Add to that the trench clubs, and it could be very beneficial to be crouched and not have your head where a head should be. Also take in to account that most of those raids occurred at night, and more often than not, you were shooting towards vague shapes in the darkness as it were, so aiming properly wasn't going to improve much in regard to hitting anything.

Hey Lindy, love the channel. You really, really need to work on your trigger discipline. Bloke was visibly uncomfortable when you had your finger on the trigger.

He was eyeing your terrible trigger discipline the WHOLE time you were sitting at the table, he seemed uncomfortable.
Even when you know a firearm is unloaded, even if it is new from the factory, even if its a prop and literally can't fire any ammunition, you should ALWAYS keep your finger off of the trigger.
It sounds petty, I know, but the more that it becomes muscle memory to keep your finger outside of the trigger guard at all times, the less likely you are to ever accidentally (NEGLIGENTLY) discharge a firearm.

I have used a real firearm twice on a shooting range and besides that I play Airsoft and I sometimes find myself holding finger off the trigger even when I'm in the middle of a BB exchange...
Andrew Robinson remember everyone, there is no such thing as a accidental discharge. Only a negligent discharge.
That level of mincing about with the gun is completely unnecessary. If you know the firearm is unloaded and have verified it as such it doesn't matter if your finger's on the trigger cause it's not gonna fire regardless.
As for doing it even with something you _know_ cannot possibly fire a round, that's just flat-out ridiculous. If someone's waving about something which very much looks like a firearm with their finger on the trigger and you have not yourself verified it as unloaded, that would be an uncontrolled situation and therefore unsafe. But in a controlled situation with something that is known to contain no ammunition it's not necessary at all.
If you need to do that because you can't tell the difference between controlled and uncontrolled situations/can't remember whether you unloaded the gun or not, you shouldn't be handling a firearm in the first place.

Lindy isn't a gun owner (as far as i know) but as long as you're under supervision of someone who knows gun safety there's not really an issue. I was eyeing his trigger safety too but i'm subbed to bloke on the range so i know nothing could have happened
