    Great tutorial. Clear and concise with no unnecessary waffle. I loved the point you made about how we accept imperfections in things we buy, and expect perfection in things we make ourselves. So many times I have wasted hours trying to redo areas not perfect, sometimes even ditching them, and then noticing something in my wardrobe store bought with exactly the same imperfection that I had never noticed.

    Excellent! So many tutorials gloss over the tricky bits. You do not. It's so helpful to have hints, tips and techniques shared....eg. the row of stitching inside the seam for clipping to. Also, I now know how a quilting bar works! Thanks. I'll be back for more. 😊

    Thank you for the pattern. I do think it's easier to make two hats and sew together. I do like the tip on clipping the curves before sewing the crown to the brim and marking the quarter sections.

    Hi there, thank you for sharing this video, on how to make the bucket hat, but what is the measurements for the bucket hat, I mean the lengths & the depth, I'm not sure I can guess at this.

    • @madeandmaking2170
      @madeandmaking2170  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am not quite sure what you mean by the length but the depth can be measured by measuring the band that goes around the hat... I don't actually have one close to me that I can measure.Does the head circumference measurement not help?

    Lovely old Bernina. One of the 1000 series, I have a few models in that range and love them. I've been making sun hats for me for a year or so with curtain blackout fabric in the brim for better UV protection. My husband needs one now too and this has a less fuller brim which he'd prefer so I'll try it for him. 🙂
    I use broadly the same order of construction apart from only topstitching the edge of the brim initially and wait to do all the parallel rows until after the hat is constructed. It's less fiddly to join the hat sides and brim this way and also easier to get your brim rows evenly spaced as they approach the inner seam line. I like quite narrow rows so use the edge of my foot with my needle furthest left.

      @madeandmaking2170  ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you very much for your reply. I actually tried out the oil cloth idea.... and yes, it might not be 100% waterproof but a bigger problem was that when I was almost finished and delighted with the result, my needle 'hit' a thickish spot and 'died'!! I was taken by surprise and disappointment as the the needle didn't even break. I await the verdict of the sewing machine repair man nex! It may be an expensive hat! 🤩😂

    I’ve watched a few videos now showing various ways of putting these hats together and I think yours is the best. I like the way you prepared the body of the hat with the row of stitching and clipping the edges, I think it will be easier to attach the top circle piece. I have one alteration to make to the pattern, my daughter would like a hole for her ponytail and I’ve worked out how to do that so I’m looking forward to having a go at one of these. What a shame that the hat is just way too tight on my head so that I decided to only have it as an unlined hat but still it is just too snug on my head. How can I try again perhaps adding 2 inches all around the circumference and NOT the width of the brim?

    • @madeandmaking2170
      @madeandmaking2170  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry stacey only just seen this note. If you make the circumference bigger you will need make the brim wider to fit the same size but don't make the brim any deeper. I hope that makes sense. All the best

    Great tutorial. Just a reminder, never sew over pins. They can both mess up the timing on the machine, and break needles, sending them flying, sometimes right into your eye. Place the pins from the outside in so the head is to the right of the needle, it is mucu easier to remove them as you sew.

May I suggest to use pinking shear to reduce the bulk and pull out pins when you get closer to them while sewing.. So glad you enjoyed it Irene and thanks for your tips... Sewing over pins does carry risks but sometimes leaving those pins in does get a better finish as nothing ever moves! Take care and good luck with your hat. xx

    • @irenee8051
      @irenee8051 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If there is a risk even as slight risk and having the sewing needle break when sewing over the pins, I will not risk it. Just the thought of the broken piece of the sharp pointy needle hitting my face or or worst my eyes… is not worth the risk of making sure the pins hold the fabrics in place better. I pull the pins out as close as I can before the sewing needle can stitch over the pins and there are other pins holding the rest of the fabric in place so it will still hold the fabrics together. I think safety is first and foremost in everything that I do. Imho.

      Definitely no more than half a metre and you can make the inside and outside different. If you have a look at the pattern you will get a good idea of the shapes and might help you be more thrifty with fabric if you have a smaller bit. x

    Hi, I know i've asked for help before, please forgive me, but my husband's head is 26" and I can't figure out how much bigger I need to make the middle band/rim/top...also, do you only place iron on fabric onto the brim? Please could you help me understand how I can adapt your method to fit my husband's head! Thank you.

    • @madeandmaking2170
      @madeandmaking2170  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      First up you will need to draw a new bucket hat top. The semi circle will need a curve that is 13" long. You could try enlarging on a photocopier if you have access to one. Then you will need a new band pattern piece. The shorter curve on this is currently 5.25inches and you will need to extend that to be 6.5 inches. When you have done that you need to then measure the larger curve on that pattern piece and take note of that measurement. lets call it A. Then on the brim pattern piece you need to make the shorter curve the same measurement as A. Does that help?
