I make bucket hats and donate them to the Children's Cancer Hospital. To speed up cutting, I made cardboard templates of the pattern pieces and trace them onto SF10; do a rough cut around the pieces; fuse the interfacing to the fabric and then cut out along the lines. This lets you maximize your interfacing by drawing your shapes close together and makes it easy to fussy cut your fabric because you can see the design through the interfacing when you place it.

I love this, cutting interfacing to match the pattern piece is such a pain.

I use the plastic 'cutting' boards I get at the Dollar Tree to cut out my pattern pieces. Then the plastic lasts longer. ;) I use a marking pen to trace around the pieces and then cut the pieces out. I have the gold document envelopes that hold these plastic pattern pieces with a picture of the item the pattern makes on the outside of the envelope.

I used to use the rigid cardboard for my pattern/templates but after a while the cardboard gets a bit frazzled at the edges. I decided to try clear sheets (the kind that are used for the covers of business reports or spiral bound instructions). You can get these sheets at paper supply stores or office stores, I get the thickest ones, there are usually 3 different thicknesses. $tree also has thick plastic cutting sheets in their kitchen area. I also print the pattern on sticker paper and adhere the paper to the plastic. With bigger pieces like this pattern I connect the pattern pieces with clear packing tape. I’ve been doing this for 8 years and my pattern pieces still have their shape.

I made this hat shortly after this video release 2 years ago & used my local NFL team fabric, as well as quilt cotton for the grandkids. Ended up making 6 hats total! Love your video Jess, & I would say to anyone reading my comment now-I just was able to download the pattern again FOR FREE! If you don want info to come to your email from Mood fabrics-unscribe from them-duh.
And for the rude comments about talking so much-how entitled are you? She is explaining her thought process, as makers do. If you dont like it, dont watch!

I do have one question for this Bucket Hat, I can not seem to get to the link for the pattern, and since we are currently in Winter, I would LOVE to make some of these beauties for the folk down-under here….is there anyway you can send me it some how… apparently that link has been playing up for ages!! When you leave the opening in the upper part of the hat piece(riser), instead of sewing or pressing the seam open, I would put the seam allowances to the one side. Then pull the hat through the opening and you can machine stitch that hole closed by "stitching in the ditch" on those two seams and that would close the hole and stitch the upper parts of the hat together to hold them together.

I just made this pattern a couple of weekends ago! Love this!!! I didn't interface mine for a more floppy look. I used all a cotton woven on one side and a medium weight twill on one side. Thanks for making this tutorial.

I love this pattern. I made one today and I’m cutting out more for gifts on a weekend at the Cape with my buddies. Thank you for sharing. I needed to take a bag-making break and this is the perfect project.

Love your videos, you are a great teacher. Please make a version of the bucket hat with a drawstring to tighten it when needed.

Thank you for the great tutorial! I have been wanting to make a bucket hat for a long time. I love that you made it reversible. I don't like seeing all the seams on the inside. I made one tonight using your tips, thank you!!. I like the turning/closing on the side panel. I did use the ladder stitch. I used mostly quilt cotton, except the top exterior. I had a cute rayon blend with a US flag and hibiscus flowers that I couldn't pass up. It turned out so cute.

@@OklaRoots I have now finished 4 different sizes for my grandkids and they love them! I would not have attempted it without this fun video! I figured something out after the first two--you can put the turn-out opening in one of the seams that build the brim and then no hand sewing is needed as you can close it with the concentric rows of top-stitching.

Hello from Florida, so first thank you for the tutorial. I have made reversable hats for my hubby were big huge Disney fans, so he constantly has me making him his own bucket hats it's so cute seeing him shop on Etsy for material...LOL..anyhoo, I came across your video and I fell in love with the wide brim so I downloaded the pattern and made size D but as I was strolling at Disney it was kind of windy, and it was flying off so I am going to remake it and try size C which is funny I have a small head of a child in the pattern...LOL... too funny but oh well...and I am going to add the grommets to this one because I found out it also gets hot...LOL...so thank you so much for the tutorial
