If I was at the shop that "reconditioned" that engine I would be mightily embarrassed .
Engines are not something for the inexperienced or untrained to tackle. I know this is contra to what many blogs, social media, youtube and dodgy books say.
Sure, maybe a mug can patch up a motor and get it running, but it is another thing to have it running sweetly, to have it running reliably for tens of thousands of miles and for it to not leak oil.
Within an engine there are hundreds/thousands of individual components. Each of those components has to be put back in the right order, the right orientation and with correct clearances. The area of measuring the clearances correctly is a discipline all in itself. The fasteners alone demand full and proper understanding. Oil seals, assembly techniques, inspection and checking techniques. It all has to be scrupulously clean when reassembled. Then all the ancilliary components need to be working correctly in order for the engine to work.Get just one bit/part wrong and the whole engine can be toast.
Get 90% right in any exam and that is an "A" and you break out the champagne.
Get 90% right when rebuilding an engine and you are in a world of pain.
With an engine, for it to work, you need to get it 100% correct. Period.
People do not seem to realize how demanding the work is and many , that should know better, become blase about the whole process.
And then there is the broad group, professional and amateur, with a little bit of knowledge being a danger to themselves and those around them.
When done right a renewed engine is a joy. When done poorly it becomes an expensive nightmare for all and puts people off old cars/vehicles(when it is not the fault of the old car/vehicle). None of us want that. There are no shortcuts. Quality wins every time.
Tread carefully to avoid the painful pitfalls.
Respect the engineering that went in to them in the first place that was conducted by very clever human beings.
We all stand upon the shoulders of giants.
    Good luck getting this sorted.

I've got to pull down my s3 diesel this year, blowing blue smoke and possibly big end noises, will be the biggest job I've undertaken, will enjoy watching your videos

    Hi Geoff,
Sorry too hear about your engine problems, you did everything right and hopefully the engine rebuilder stands by his work.
I have just rebuilt my engine I’ll be starting it in a month or so.
    Hopefully it’s something simple. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

      Hi Adolfo.
Thank you for your kind words, I am sure it is something simple. It is just the inconvenience of it all.
Fingers crossed and best wishes on bringing your engine back to life. Cheers Geoff

Extremely unfortunate outcome after going to great lengths to have an engine professionally rebuilt and it then failing. However if you had performed the rebuild yourself you would have no recourse, by having professionals rebuild the engine you have warranty and although you now have to remove the engine you know it will be addressed. I am looking forward to finding out what component failed, obviously piston/ring components possibly incorrectly assembled or component failure. I am in the process of refurbishing my 2.6 six cylinder and finding good quality components is difficult. Good luck with the engine.

how do you like the su hif44 carb?ive one on mine with the hnj kit ,what needle did you use in the end? hope you get it sorted , and they used good quality parts? not britpart !! my policy is "1/2 genuine is better the a new cheap pattern part"

    • @seriouslyseriesaustralia
      @seriouslyseriesaustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

The HIF44 is a great edition to the Series Land Rover. The engine has been modified to be a bit more high performance so we use the BDL needle with.a yellow spring.
Time will tell what the cause of the fault was, these are extremely simple engine as you know, so it will be very interesting to see what the cause is? Anyway, keep you posted. Cheers Geoff

Sorry to hear that you have issues but I can only hope you have a warranty on that engine I am actually finishing a rebuild I bought new pistons and the ring’s were already assembled I made my own compression tool and fitted I also lapped in new valve’s to the head can’t wait to start and drive her and yes I’ll be interested in the oil consumption as before it’s consumption was high!
I’ve really enjoyed rebuilding the engine!

These things happen it is more about the inconvenience and the hassle of getting the motor sorted.
That sounds like you have a great project underway. From my research and findings you should experience pretty much any oil consumption from a freshly rebuilt engine. All the best mate and great to hear another Series Land Rover will back on the road soon. Cheers Geoff

I feel for you, the inconvenience of it all.
I’ve come to the conclusion that your better off doing everything yourself, I was rebuilding a vehicle and like yourself didn’t have the time to overhaul 2 major components so I took them to the experts to have the job done. Guess which parts I had trouble with?
I don’t trust anyone anymore to work on any of my cars as their level of care and mine are completely different.
Hope you have a speedy fix.
    Paul.

I fully agree that if it's within your competence to do a repair or rebuild yourself that's what you should do. On many occasions I have been let down by others' workmanship so I do most things myself now. However there are jobs which I don't have the experience or equipment to do myself and I then need to subcontract the work. The skill is to do sufficient research and take sufficient precautions to subcontract successfully.

No excuses for a rebuild fail on one of these, as far as four cylinder engines go, it's about as simple as it gets. When I fitted mine I had to fit a second battery to turn the engine in Winter..... Far better to get an off the shelf exchange engine rather than getting someone to rebuild yours though.
Best modifications i did to mine was fitting an SU carb and big bore exhaust kit.... With the extra power you get, and you do get a bit more, it allowed me to fit Range Rover 3.54 diffs, and with the overdrive I was getting near 20 mpg.... Possibly more on a run.
I would consider this mod for the long, straight and flat roads in the Outback... Far less wear on the engine, and the driver also.

Hi Neil. Thank your insight. It is a shame and it is going to be interesting from purely a engineering point of view as to what has been the cause of this oil consumption issue. The SU conversion isn't cheap but as you said it is the best modification, couldn't live without it now. Thanks for watching, kind regards, Geoff

Hi, Have you had any update on your engine rebuild issues?
A professional quality rebuild on a series motor should give you hundreds of thousand miles before you need to do anything other than routine maintenance & consumable parts.
You would be better rebuilding it yourself, that way any compromises on cost or quality are yours to make & if it breaks down you know it inside out and know exactly where to start looking.

    • @seriouslyseriesaustralia
      @seriouslyseriesaustralia  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Peter.
Sadly I haven't any further updates on the engine other than they have taken the head off
All I can say is hindsight, is what it is and I understand and I appreciate where you are coming from Peter and I would differently look at rebuilding my next engine myself.
However, at the time, this was the most logical decision as the company has rebuilt many of these engines over the years. I was also very time-poor at the time, when you working a 90 hour week at your full-time job and running a TH-cam channel, film production company, etc on the side there just aren't enough hours in the day.
Anyway it is what it is, we will let you know when we find out what the cause is.
      Cheers Geoff

As you say the rings could be the culprit here, they are slightly bevelled. There are markings which indicate if this should point 'down' or 'up' towards the head.

It is all very odd and yes you are right. I should hopefully have the answer in the month or so, keep you posted. Kind regards, Geoff

Geoff what was your dry cylinder pressure reading target?

    • @seriouslyseriesaustralia

My dry cylinder target was between 0 to 20 percent for the leak test. Cheers Geoff

Must say the theme music you’ve been using for a few months is not as good as the original. Preferred the less ‘produced’ music.
Glad the content is unchanged in production 👍

Hi Steve. Thank you for the feedback on the music. We will keep that in mind next time, not to make it too slick. Really glad to hear you are still enjoying the content. Cheers Geoff
