Dolphin House Museum - Bimini Island, Bahamas 7/2024

A work in progress since 1993, the Dolphin House Museum is a masterfully built work of art and the personal home of Bimini Island resident, Ashley Saunders. As an internationally recognized and published author, poet and so much more, Mr Saunders shares a harrowing tale of his inspiration to build the Dolphin House during one of his personally narrated tours of his home.
Using upcycled materials collected from around the island, this amazing and beautiful masterpiece showcasing great skill, amazing talent and creative resourcefulness, contains old bottles, shells, trinkets, discarded building material, recovered shipwreck items, just to name a few.
Contained in every square inch, inside and out of this hurricane proof, 3 story home, are thousands of interesting items and an even more captivating stories of their discoveries, use and inspirations used during the ongoing construction. It's a perfect example of turning one man's trash into another man's treasure.
Looking at photos, or even this video, do the home and the man behind it no justice. It's not until you are within inches of every possible surface that you can appreciate the raw talent and artistic use of materials. No two views are ever the same and if you pan your eyes to quickly, you will certainly miss the smallest of details.
Located on Bimini North side, admission (at time of posting 7/2024)is only $10 per person but we'll worth 10 times that amount. One could personally visit Bimini's most artistic structure a thousand times over and still find new items hidden throughout. It's still a work in progress never likely to end, so it will always be different each and every return visit.
The captivating story telling by Ashley Saunders himself, will leave you in wonder and amazement but learning about this multi talanted individual, is another adventure in and of itself. He's more than just an islander, a poet or an author, his titles seemingly endless. Searching online, there is certainly plenty to read and learn about Ashley with his accomplishment astounding.
If you plan to visit or even if you have been to Bimini a hundred times, the Dolphin House Museum is a stop you have to make each and every time you are there. Listening to the story, there is no doubt in my mind that Mr Saunders lives and breathes the very definition of what Get Aft'er It is all about!
