Bimini Island Travel Guide - Celebrity Cruise Port of Call
When stopping at Bimini Island, whether by private boat, flight or a cruise, there are a few places worth checking out. But be sure to bring cash as most shopping and area attractions do not accept credit cards. You may find some luck with Cash App or Zelle but cash is king.
Since we aren't big drinkers or gamblers, the two most popular things to do on Bimini, we set off solo, looking for our own adventure on a budget.
Bimini is best known for the fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving along with swimming in the picturesque, Caribbean, and year round, tropically warm water. Located only 54 miles west of the Florida peninsula, this tropical oasis is easy to get to.
Stepping off the Celebrity Reflection, we loaded up on the courtesy tram which transports you to the Hilton Hotel, Casino or Golf Cart Rental facility. Haggling with the locals, even during off season, wasn't happening so $120 later, we had our own 4 seater, gas powered golf cart to enjoy with a return time of 4:30pm. They didn't ask for a drivers license or to fill out any paperwork. In hindsight, since we only used the cart until about 1pm, we could have easily turned it over to a different family for them to enjoy the remainder of the time. If it didn't get returned, there was no paper trail (not that there is far for it to go anyways). While you can hoof it on foot or grab a taxi here and there, the overall experience was much more enjoyable with our own golf cart. Be sure to make sure your golf cart works right, has working breaks, forward and reverse etc, before leaving the lot. We didn't experience any issues other than shotty brakes but hearing from others, the carts aren't very well maintained. You may also try your hand at haggling but don't expect to win that battle.
Outside of beaching, gambling and drinking there really isn't too much to do on the island. The small island can be quickly seen by cart for a bit of sightseeing and there are several little vendor shops scattered about with the usual fanfare and some locally handmade items. We only purchased a Conch Shell but be forewarned, you need to ensure it's been properly processed for customs checks and you MUST get a receipt. Otherwise your purchase will be confiscated either upon return to the ship or upon arrival back to the states.
While shopping, we asked a local islander if any recommended places to visit. The islanders are a close knit group of people and exceptionally friendly and willing to recommend some places to check out. One such recommendation that I strongly encourage anyone to check out is the Dolphin House Museum. Builder Ashley Saunders is quite the amazing individual and admission is only $10(USD). Since this house turned tourist attraction has been worked on for over 30 years (and counting), this is a spot to visit time and time again as it will always be different. Check out my related video for an overview on that.
The other place I'd recommend is a little place on the water called Ebbie's for some amazingly fresh seafood. The staple item is conch and conch salad as the surrounding waters are bountiful with this replenishing food source. Prices are on the higher side as they are taking full advantage of vacationers and our conch salad cost $14(USD) each and a bottle of water was $6(USD). They do not accept any form of payment but cash so be prepared. We did not have any extra cash after renting a golf cart, buying a souvenir and visiting the Dolphin House but luckily they begrudgingly accepted a Zelle transfer and even more lucky, I had an international data plan to access the internet and my mobile banking app but don't expect the same results. This place isn't very well marked and sits back off the road behind another building, through a wood fence with a small sign.
It would be much better to carry a small backpack, or similar, with your own drinks on hand to save a bit of money. We only carried off 2 bottles each but with the heat of summer, we quickly exhausted our personal supply and didn't want to return to the ship to grab more, though that is always an option.
Outside of those two spots, we didn't see too much else the island had to offer. There are several local eateries but most seemed to be located inside houses that looked less than appealing and we were concerned about food quality and food safety so diecided to not to risk it.
We ran the island tip to tip (or as far as we legally could go) and ventured up and down the side streets on some neat sightseeing. The locals we encountered were friendly but we still kept our guard up. Crime rates are reportedly very low but we never saw law enforcement except at the port gate and don't take chances, keeping our situational awareness on high alert.
So pack a bag with some towels and goggles and take in the views underwater, definately check out the Dolphin House Museum and grab a refreshing conch salad at Ebbie's and Pats.

    • @SandhillCaptain
      @SandhillCaptain 11 วันที่ผ่านมา

I can't speak to shrinkage (as none has occurred with our clothes) but with wrinkles and the steam functions we have never had to pull out an iron if that tells you anything. If you accidently leave clothes inside after a cycle, naturally they will begin to wrinkle but a quick steam refresh cycle and good to go.

This is a restricted area just for planes on all harbor water maps Area Alpha is what it is called and boaters are told to stay out of it all together if they can at all help it- these guys thought they were so special that with full visibility they should not pay attention to the FUCKING PLANES boaters are legally permitted to go within the takeoff and landing zone, port authorities ask boaters to keep clear because of the heightened risk THATS GUNNA CHNAGE NOW. Knowing how to read charts is a required part of obtaining a boating license in Canada. Knowledge check! Boat vs Airplane! Who was in the wrong here? Bonus points to anyone that knows the boating Rules of the Road and can correctly identify who carries the majority of fault (each share some degree of fault) Hint: A seaplane in the water is treated just like a boat and is also the "give-way" vessel in the hierarchy. But, that doesn't necessarily mean they are or are not at fault here. Boat hierarchy is NRCFSPSW. If you know what this is referring to, double the bonus points!! New:_____________ Reels:____________ Catch:____________ Fish:___________ So:__________ Purchase:__________ Some:____________ Whenever:_____________ Now, if the seaplane was actually trying to land before the video started, and was and trying to take back off to avoid the collision when the collision happened, does this change your assessment? I don’t know how anyone could be in the right or wrong in this situation. I’d think the boater, if he was paying attention could have avoided the collision. I’m not sure what visibility the pilot has from inside the plane but I’d think the boater could see 360…. So if there’s got to be a fault I’d say the boater.

You cannot turn a plane easily like a personal boat can. I've been on water ways that pontoon planes land on and they always are given right of way to and no accidents have happened. The boater is at fault in this clip, because he could have or could have made an attempt to avoid the collision.

13 miles off the coast of West Palm Beach Florida and into the Gulf Stream currents at just over 1000 feet deep, I found this floating rope/ocean garbage. But was was contained below was astonishing. The shadow created below attracts all sorts of marine life from every side of the food chain. It was its own little ecosystem floating around out there and a cool sight to see. Unfortunately, they will have to find a new hangout spot because that rope poses a significant risk to other marine life species as well as to mariners.

Sorry I never responded to such a detailed comment. I haven't been doing too much with TH-cam recently and kinda got put on the back burner. I apologize. Here was my underlying dilema: I considered adding a bow switch as well. There is already an unused connector for a remote in the wiring harness. When this video was made, I was using the vessel recreationally but it was going to be put into commercial service shortly after filming. While adding a remote meant I could help feed the line down into the locker, that would mean though I would have to leave the helm. In a commercial, passenger boat operation, I needed a solution that didn't involve me needing to leave the helm. With a loaded boat full of passengers, primarily on the bow, just gaining timely access to the bow myself was going to be a huge issue. 99% of where I anchor is in 5ft or less but with strong currents and winds as well as being densely occupied by other boats. By adding 30ft of chain, I almost never pay out enough to get to where the chain meets the rope. Now two years later, probably 300 trips involving the use of the windlass to anchor, and I have never had one binding or bunching issue requiring my manual assistance or leaving of the helm. But also, I certainly didn't need the 200ft of 8 plait either because I've never been anywhere deep enough to need to get into it. I do however, run plenty of offshore trips and while I'm running twin engines as a redundancy, if I have a breakdown, I may be happy I have that 200ft. If I were to do it all over again, I would have loaded on 50ft of chain and 150ft of 8 plait. My word of caution in running more than 15ft of chain is that you want to use a snubber. Having all the load on the chain, and the chain going through the windlass while at anchor, puts a lot of recoil load on the windless and mount. If you have rope paying out, the rope itself acts as a shock absorber of sorts. But with all chain, the use of a snubber will prevent damage to the windless, the mounting and the hardware. Fair winds and following seas to ya! -Capt Matt

After mixing all those different kinds of fish and stuff I would definitely not use water from the hose. Chlorine is absolutely a fish repellent. So I'd use the water from the area I wanted to fish. Other than that it looks pretty good. I used to make chum with a sausage grinder and any fish we had available, plus menhaden oil and oats or cat food. It called up the bait and we got sharks under the boat a few times. That was a long time ago in Florida. Now I live by the Chesapeake Bay and I need to try making chum again. It might turn the pier into a good spot.

Agreed. The water is actually filtered using those in line RV filters. However, the fish love it and it had great results. Although, it's probably just as cost effective (not to mention the time savings) just just buy frozen chum
