  • In this video I dicuss what goes into a charter boat trip, the pre-trip process, and what many people don't see.
Running a charter boat company, that specializes in customized trips and ash scatterings at sea, means there is no such thing as a standard trip or starting trip time. That's what makes Sandhill Charters unique and a step above the rest.
Client requested a 7am departure for an ash scattering service, but for me (the captain) that means my day starts several hours earlier at 3:30 in the morning. Actually, it starts the day before.
What I don't mention is the post trip wash down that also happens to remove all the dirt tacked in plus the salt deposits on every surface. Of course, all the stuff set up has to be torn back down.
This process is the same for any trip going out. Some require a lot more in the way of requested provisioning, equipment etc. This is why I want to take multiple trips a day. A 2.5hr trip is still a 6hr+ day on the water with prep, tear down, travel, post trip office work. But 3 trips on a single day is only 11hrs.
It's a labor of love for sure because if you look at the price a customer pays vs the overhead that goes into running a business (insurance, marina fees, licensing, fuel, gear, maintenance and the list goes) you can get a better understanding of why rates are what they are and that a lot of "working hours" is really unpaid time. But if I'm going to be sitting on the couch once done unpaid anyways, I can utilize my "free labor" to enhance the business.
And I do all this for one goal in mind, so the booking client can have the exact experience they are expecting and deserving. I'm in the business of creating lifelong memories and facilitating in helping families find peace and healing.
