    STILL WORKS IN 2024
    I bought a HP stream 14-cf2112wm yesterday. I needed something for work since I work online. this laptop was the only one available that was within my limited budget.
    glad for this video cos the memory is trash. I'm good to go now.

    My brother gave me his late 2019/early 2020 Stream 14 CB164. Had to replace the battery and while I had it apart I upgraded the BIOS to F.23 then swapped in a GSKill 16Gb DDR4 SODIMM I had hanging around. Works just fine.

      Also, you’re being argumentative and trying to explain something to me that I obviously already knew (considering I did my research and replaced my own ram). If you wanted to share that info with others, you should have done it on a separate comment. Again, you somehow misinterpreted and generalized my comment.

    Just a little more research could have really improved your HP Stream even more!! RAM is a good start, but removing the WIFI/BT Module for an Adapter that holds an SSD will improve things to take advantage of the added RAM. My 2017 HP Stream went from 32gb eMMC 4gb RAM to 480gb NVME SSD and 8gb RAM, the boost in performance is impressive as the eMMC is the bottleneck on the Stream. Add I went a little overboard and even swapped the display for a 1080p IPS Panel, following Tech Rodent's video . In any case knowing how to open a Stream is a good thing so Thank you for a good bit of info there!!!! Keep up the good work !!

      Now that is a hard question, you can replace the wifi card with (i think) and m.2 or NVME ssd, although you need to get an extension cable. Luckily the laptop has quite a bit of free space in its chasis so it should be fine. About the wifi though… Alternatively you can piggyback on the USB 3 bus with a hard drive or ssd for external boot mediums. But if you are hurting for storage on the tiny *emmc there are tricks in both Linux and Windows to move system folders to an external storage devices. Like /Home or My Documents to an SD card for example.

    • @sillystev0n

      No, your model doesn’t support the upgrade. It came from an older generation. However, if you have the correct memory specification you might be able to. The Celeron n4000 supports a maximum of 8GB of RAM, but the chipset may not. I recommend using a Linux distro like Manjaro or standard Arch Linux as they both are easier on a systems resources, and will help with your storage situation. Another possible solution is using Google’s new Chrome OS Flex or Brunch it for a chrome book experience. This laptop is very similar to many chrome books of today and is very performant under Chrome OS.

      PC3L does mean DDR3 and the L means Low-voltage - Also: The HP Stream 14 has DDR3 and DDR4 models
      starting in 2014 to 2016 and later I believe and an example would be 14-cb120ca 4JC83UA 4JC83UA#ABL and are small numbers on the bottom shell as model/series/part number to search specs and upgrade-ability.
      “4GB 1Rx8 PC3L 12800S” is DDR3 Low-voltage 1600Mhz 1Rx8 1R is a single-rank module -x8 is the number of banks in the module. For the example model above it uses 4 or 8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM as HP states it can.
      Hope this helps someone as Windows 11 needs ram for advertising, though most of that is tamable anyways.

      Sorry for the late response, but heres what you have to do in order to use an external drive (your SD card in this case) for Windows Update. This should apply to both Windows 10 and 11 but if it doesn't try to apply these steps in your scenario.
      Step 1: Go to Settings and select Windows Update (Update and Security for Windows 10)
      Step 2: Select "Fix Issues" under the Windows Update panel (Both 10 and 11 are the same!)
      Step 3: Back up any files that may be important on the SD card, then insert the card into the reader and select it from the drop down menu that should appear.
      Step 4: Click "Next" and let Windows Update do its thing. Just follow any prompts as usual!
      Once it finishes, you can remove the SD card, or use it normally. Hope I could help!

      For gaming, really depends on what you play since the cpu is quite limiting in terms of gaming. I can play old school RuneScape, some Roblox, and a few of my steam games like Changed, Half Life, and portal. In layman’s terms, the CPU holds back what you can do on a machine like this. If you get creative you can do quite a bit on these netbooks and the memory really helps with sandbox usage!

      In theory, yes you could. However, you would have to swap the wifi card for a suitable SSD thus rendering your laptop with no wireless connectivity. Luckily there is ample room for added components inside the 14" chassis such as the SSD. You can use a USB WiFi dongle to restore wireless connectivity. Since the 64 Gigabyte eMMC drive never bothered me, I haven't attempted the upgrade but I have run Fedora linux from a SATA SSD over USB 3 without a hitch which gave me plenty of extra space to leave my main linux install intact.

    • @sillystev0n
      @sillystev0n  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To answer your question, the processor is non-upgradeable (Sad, Wish I could do that lol) as its soldered directly onto the main board and would require extensive rework. Using an external ssd may vary on a case by case basis as you have to take into account the bus speed (How fast the port can go), the adapter used (meaning if it can keep up with the demand), and the external drive used (if you use an ssd it still should be heaps fast!). You can set up an external drive with Windows-To-Go on a USB 3.0 SSD for some extra space and possibly even speed, which I have been meaning to try but haven’t gotten around to it. Although in my testing the internal eMMC drive has been pretty speedy and I haven’t had any problems with it!

      You can swap the WiFi card with a larger SSD, or even upgrade the WiFi itself too. But other than that, there’s not much else you can do. If you need WiFi and don’t want to do the swap, SD cards work really well especially in this machine with a full size SD Card reader.

    • @sillystev0n
      @sillystev0n  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@BB-fj5yeNo worries, we all gotta start somewhere! Now heres a crash course: Depending on what you are using for animation, the requirements for RAM and storage differs. Depending on the size of your animation projects, you'll need more ram and storage. RAM is temporary memory your streambook uses to store temporary program data, like your animations, and then can save them to your internal storage, the final product. The resolution of your animation greatly impacts these values so its safe to say the more the better. You can easily get by using a USB flash drive to store your projects or simply manage your internal storage well as its limited, especially when you use it for more than one thing. RAM will fluctuate as you use your device or have more programs running at once (Animation Program, Web Browser, etc.) but it clears out once you close some programs. If you have any more questions I'll be here. Good luck!

    • @sillystev0n
      @sillystev0n  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, this laptops chipset is quite underpowered for your desired task. Not to mention the storage situation but, it does leave room for desire in terms of games. However, that won’t stop you for tweaking your games for possibly playable performance! Instead there are, in fact, plenty of fun and FOSS games that work great on this laptop and computers with a similar chipset!

    Hey i just got this exact laptop about a month ago I have no complaints except my storage already being low lol. So I was wonder what card can I use in the SD slot on this laptop any suggestions on a certain brand? Or it doesn’t matter?

      Personally, I recommend the full size SanDisk Ultra SD cards. They make faster ones if needed. Here is a non affiliate link to an Amazon listing, but you can find em’ almost anywhere.
      Here is a 128 GB SD card which has good value and a good price:

    • @sillystev0n

      The maximum amount of RAM this machine supports is 8GB. There really isn’t anything else that is upgradable in there unless you do some extensive rework.

    Bought this same laptop from Wal Mart earlier today. Does anyone think it could run programs for creating/minting NFTs if I upgrade to 8gb of RAM or should I opt for something more powerful? I can agree with the guy in video..this laptop stock 4gb ram can hardly handle web browsing.

      Get more horsepower. I use GIMP, Kdenlive, and Krita all the time for my assorted art and video editing needs. However the CPU is quite limiting.
