I hear San Diego is, or at least was, a gorgeous city. I hear it's changing much like many California big cities are now. I have a friend who lives there and she tells me it's quite dangerous in some areas now, where it didn't used to be just a few years ago. She also mentioned there are all kinds of tent cities set up and the city leadership does nothing to alleviate the problem. Do you find that to be the case as well?

Native Clevelander, now living in Wisconsin, not as much snow, but the cold is much worse. Rust, roads, and the constant below freezing make it just as bad in winter.

I grew up in Chardon, OH. I have lived in MI where the International Ice Scupture is held. New Mexico, Alubquerque, Hobbs, and Loa Alamos, snow, Oklahoma City it rained ice. Jacksonville, FL, now. Thunderstorms almost every day and hot with high humidity. I forgot 7 years in Omaha where it snowed a lot. Everywhere has good points and bad points. I intend to head north where I will earn a much better pay check.

Toledo does not get much lake effect snow because it is west of the lakes. The prevailing winds in the area are from the west. Winds from the west/northwest go across Lake Erie and pick up moisture. Areas that are on the east/southeast shore of all the Great Lakes tend to pick up the lake effect snow. Pretty simple really. The lakes also moderate the temperatures in the lake effect areas. Cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. Although sometimes the wind will make it "feel" colder.

Spot on explanation as to why north eastern Ohio gets lake effect snow. Saturated clouds move inland, compress with the sky over higher elevations, and squeeze the clouds out like a sponge. It’s truly an awesome natural phenomena. Very unpredictable!. There are only a few places in the world that this happens and the Great Lakes region is one of them.

Cleveland has more than pot holes and cold winters. Best medical in the world, top 5 orchestra, play house square is top 2 in country, metro park system award winning, home of Rock and Roll, university circle has one of best in the country arts center. Have I mentioned the colleges? All easily accessible with a few minutes drive. Let’s talk sports, Cavs, Browns Guardians. Mostly what Cleveland has are the people! Did you see the support of this town when the Cavs won championship? Historical. You mentioned rust belt. Home to the Christmas Story movie. The back drop to that movie is the steel mills. So I agree we get snow and pot holes but we also have great seasonal changes. The magic of Cleveland is ,if you look hard enough you will find it here. Just saying!

The cavaliers did not win that basketball championship ship....LeBron james won it....just look what happened to then after he left. .the mayo clinic in Minnesota and John Hopkins University hospital are both considered better than the Cleveland clinic. The rock and roll hall of fame isn't that awesome since the inductions to it now take place in New York city and Los Angeles. ..so what's Cleveland's problem ? Of course the people are " nicer". That's because Cleveland is continuing to lose population every year. Columbus is now the most populous city and friendliest city in ohio while Cincinnati is going to surpass Cleveland in population soon. Your sports teams aren't much outside Cleveland. Outside of Cleveland ohio; very few people consider themselves to be fans of any of those teams not like the fans from any team in Pittsburgh. Or even Cincinnati in baseball. Your universities aren't considered to be nationally ranked very high unlike ohio state, university of Cincinnati and the university of toledo. And every city has nice restaurants places to shop and interesting things to do especially Columbus and Cincinnati. ......so what's the deal with Cleveland. ...oh and your national park, the Cuyahoga valley national park is often rated as one if the least attractive national parks to visit. The only things to do there are hiking; camping, bicycling and oh yeah...a train ride. Both hocking hills state park south of Columbus and the Wayne national forest near marietta offer more opportunities for enjoyment and rate higher nationally than that national park and tge people are not as nearly as friendly as you claim them to be becauae Cleveland ohio never ranks on any national list of the friendliest cities to live in but Cincinnati does and you have some of the worst weather in the continental USA with snowfall from October to mid may and gray overcast skies all year long.
Cleveland may have been something a hundred years ago but today it's just another boring dying city nobody wants to be in....since average home values in Cleveland are some of the lowest in the United States.
So you can try to brag about Cleveland as much as you want but the reality of Cleveland is that it's just another dying city that nobody outside of northeastern ohio cares about
      .

I was born and raised in Buffalo, but took a job here in Cleveland twenty seven years ago. I must say, I do like it. Other than the usual type of stuff mentioned here, it is pretty similar to my home town, BUT, I will say I have noticed that Cleveland has MANY more clear, cloudless days than Buffalo does, even if we do have less than the average amount of sunny days. I also was conversing with an old co worker who was also from Buffalo and he mentioned it too. Sure, the weather is very similar (only two hundred miles separate the cities and they are both on Lake Erie) but I have noticed Cleveland seems to get a bit warmer in the summer and again, the sheer amount of clear blue skies we get here is noticeable, at least to me. Buffalo gets nice warm days too of course, but it's very unusual to not see a cloud here or there in the sky, even on the hottest days, and I believe it's due to the proximity of the city on the lake in addition to the winds out of the NW which cause that. Cleveland is a bit west of Buffalo so that's probably it. All in all, I must say I do enjoy Cleveland and will be here for the duration of my life.

Sounds like you live in the Cleveland area and not Cleveland itself. As a native Clevelander, it’s not that bad, winters are relatively mild especially on the west side. People are fairly friendly but beware of sketchy areas. Political “leadership “ is not good. Housing prices are good, taxes are ridiculous. You totally left out the Cuyahoga county metro parks. The lake itself is amazing. Great museums, sports. Son, you barely scratched the surface.

Iuse to carry a 32 to school regularly cuz of all the roving gang bangers from my neighborhood and others. I was shot at twice in my life there and stabbed once!!! The best thing about it. Made me streetwise and taught me how to survive!! . Your definition of the rust belt is totally wrong. Simple Google search produced:
The term “Rust Belt” is often used in a derogatory sense to describe parts of the country that have seen a typically drastic economic decline. The Rust Belt region represents the deindustrialization of an area, which is often accompanied by fewer high-paying jobs and high poverty rates. The result has been a change in the urban landscape as the local population moves to other areas of the country in search of work.1
Although there is no definitive boundary, the states that are considered in the Rust Belt-at least partly-are:
    Illinois
    Indiana
    Michigan
    Missouri
    New York-upstate and western regions
    Ohio
    Pennsylvania
    West Virginia
    Wisconsin
There are other states in the U.S. that have also experienced declines in manufacturing, such as in the Deep South, but they are not usually considered part of the Rust Belt. It often refers to specific, formerly prosperous manufacturing centers in Midwestern and Northeastern cities like Detroit; Toledo, Ohio; Pittsburgh; and Buffalo, N.Y.
The region was home to some of America’s most prominent industries, such as steel production and automobile manufacturing. During its boom time, these Rust Belt cities produced heavy industrial materials and consumer products and developed storage and transportation systems to distribute them to the rest of the country. The region has experienced a sharp downturn in industrial activity from the increased cost of domestic labor, competition from overseas, technology advancements replacing workers, and the capital-intensive nature of manufacturing.
