  • In this documentary-style video we discuss driver education, training and safety along with the relevance to modern car and truck owners. We take a trip to Radford Racing School (FORMERLY Bondurant High-Performance Driving School) to talk with some of the most experienced teachers and instructors in the industry to find out the benefits of advanced driver education. With all of the talk of technology and upcoming autonomous cars do consumers need to learn all of the details? The cost of cars and trucks continually increase, Ford F150, Mustang, RAV4, BMW M3 etc, are far over $30k so the risks of costly damage and repair will continue to rise.

M156 Charles There’s plenty of room. I subscribe to 25 automotive channels. 😖 I made the following comment several months ago to one of savagegeese videos.
“I subscribe to more than a dozen auto channels, but I only click on new videos that look interesting, which may only be half of them. However I will watch anything from savagegeese. I would even watch a review of a riding lawnmower, or a skateboard.”

Steve Printy i might have more channels subscribed over the years but now I also only cared for a handful. Sense of humor, the genuine kind, combined with his decent amount of seat time on racetracks, time spent on research, makes him a convincing source for me. I’d like to see his channel grow.

Save 5-10% on your insurance premium. Most people don't apply what they learn with driver's education. These people should pay to autocross at least once in their life, really understand how cars drive under hard Acceleration, braking, etc. It'll grant them confidence, this way they won't freak out on the road in their day to day commute.

Since 2010-11 there is a law here in Austria which states that 3-6 months ( i can't remember exactly) after getting your drivers license it's mandatory to do 2 hour long classes in which they check if you are still applying the things you learned in driving school and from the tests etc. and in between those two classes you have another day in which you do all the things you mentioned especially evasive manouvers under hard braking, understeer and oversteer mid corner and especially on a wet surface and at the end you have like a hour long group chat with a psychiatrist and talk about stats and what how accidents occur etc.
But it's a different environment and so for someone that is not from around here it may look like someone is paying attention extremely well but to a local it may look like someone doesn't know what they're doing.
I'd say that American drivers pick up easier the negative forms of driving rather than what's right and what's possitive but It's just down to lack of information and what is deemed mandatory, if your laws said you have to learn only half of what is mandatory in Germany or Austria younger drivers would be far more focused whether because of fear of what could happen in certain situations or just by learning about the subject and understanding it. However to 95% of the people a drivers license and a car is just means of transportation and so they don't understand why some people are frustrated with what they're doing wrong.
      Sorry for my rant.

UK too, the driving lessons and test are so minimally adequate. The most dangerous and challenging roads are the B roads, you don't even get taken out on them.
Fortunately my driving instructor was an ex rally driver, so he was teaching me about chassis stability on B roads.
There is so much to learn and so little of it, even basic car control, is not covered in the lessons or the test.
I also believe if every driver had to ride mopeds/bikes first they would gain so much visual acuity, situational awareness and more, that would benefit them as car drivers too.

I JUST RECENTLY TOOK MY DEFENSIVE DRIVERS COURSE & I ALWAYS LEARN SO MUCH FROM IT. I HOPE THAT YOU MAKE MORE VIDEOS OF THIS KIND OF CONTENT BECAUSE DRIVER EDUCATION IS SO IMPORTANT ESPECIALLY FOR PEOPLE WHO DRIVE IN THE NORTHEAST LIKE P.A., N.J. OR N.Y.C. THE DRIVERS ON THE HIGHWAYS OR STREETS CAN BE VERY RECKLESS. I ASKED MY DRIVERS ED INSTRUCTOR IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET A COPY OF THEIR VIDEO, BUT THEY SAID NO. I GET IT. IT’S ULTIMATELY A BUSINESS, BUT I THINK THAT IT WOULD HELP NEWER DRIVERS SUCH AS MYSELF. THANKS FOR THIS GREAT VIDEO👍👍👍👍👍

As someone who is getting back into serious driving after a lot of years living in NYC where owning cars is basically a form of madness or extreme wealth (or both), I can't thank you enough for this video; there are great ideas within about how to help the kids in the family- including me! The last time I heel and toed was in a 124 Spyder, just to give you an idea... But the simplest point was about vision, which is great on any level.

I"m an old fart who first got my license in 1977 at 16. Back then California actually had enough money to have free driver's training classes for high school students. I'm really glad I had the opportunity to learn with a school provided car and teacher. I think it was worth it and gave me more confidence.

I was fortunate enough that my Dad recognised the importance of being a skilled driver and bought me professional driving instruction and advanced driving instruction for my 16th birthday. Definitely saved me from accidents several times in the intervening 30 years. I could probably do with a refresher though - when I did the skid pan training it was just a big puddle to slide around in!

I had the opportunity to do the SRT Experience at Bondurant, which was included with my 392 Charger. It was a lot of fun. Wish I could swing the multi day sessions but the one day event was still awesome. Great video! I know Bondurant just went through BK so hopefully they are able to find success and keep going for many more years.

    Thanks for your video !!
I grew up on a dairy farm and I was 13 or something and I would watch my dad how he was changing gears in the old Mazda b1600 column shift manual and when they were up milking the cows I would start it up reverse out for the shed and under the apple trees and put it in 1st gear and drive back into the shed and switch it off and run away before anyone seen me.. then a few years later I had like 5 mk5 cortinas and 2 mk4's so I was off up into the Forestry cutting lose drifting around the gravel roads even a heap of drunk driving, up fire breaks and river beds anywhere and that was mostly in a crashed mk5 1983 Cortina wagon 2.0L 4 speed my mate wrote off hitting a power pole.. I just loved driving hard and always pushing the limits then got into Ford escorts and anything that went wrong I'd just swap the parts as they are so easy to work on and you just look and learn.
My point is that most people on the road are lacking so much driving skills..

7 mins in, I did car limits in the UK and the first thing they taught us was the hand over hand. 20 minutes of going around a figure of 8. Sounds pointless but you've got to get that muscle memory for when they suddenly throw the car out of shape and you're trying to gather it back in haha. Best thing I did that course and wish I could afford to do another one to refresh. EDIT at the bit about looking, when the instructor got me to stop worrying about the apex once I turned in and told me to look for the exit before we had got through the apex it shaved like 0.25s per corner off. You naturally get on the gas earlier because you're ahead. It's all so true man. Just hard to learn and muscle memorise when most of the time you're on the street without your own personal track to practise on.

I always recommend autox to people that want to get into the grassroots motorsport of things like track so they can learn how to handle their junkbox around some cones and learn it at a lower speed. Because the worse that could happen is you smack a cone and DNF that run. There's also a lot of helpful people there that have more skill that can help you figure your car out and help you learn the importance of tire PSI. But of course, the first thing to do is get some actual 200TW tires and just send it. That's actually what I done and you learned quite quickly on how to drive your car fast.

Good stuff, though for parents who can't afford a more full-on racing program like this, it's worth mention that there are other local(ish) programs like SCCA Street Survival that can help cover the sorely under-represented car control aspect of driver's ed. It obviously won't be on par with something like Bondurant, but it's a much more accessible means of getting new drivers started on building the skills required for active accident avoidance, under/oversteer correction, etc. in a controlled environment with experienced instructors (usually SCCA, BMWCCA, PCA, et al. track/autox regulars).
