30 Years Later, The Life of a Driving Instructor

  • We interview Mike McGovern the Chief Driving Instructor at Bondurant School in Arizona. After a life of cars and driving experience, he talks about teaching kids, race car drivers, and people like us. Cars and trucks are everywhere, some people care about it while others don't but there is one common thread, we have to share the roads. Often times you get back what you put in and we talk to Mike about just that.

"This is my guitar" speaks to my core. I am the quintessential self-taught (sims, autocross, snowy parking lots, track days, mountain roads, etc) driver who has had some interest in these driving schools for a long time, but never gone to one. Because I've been self taught for so long, and have not had great instructors in the past (and I have an ego), I've been hesitant to do these. It would take the right instructor and the right exercises, for me to spend the $$$ and time. You're doing a great job highlighting the guys that do this. Maybe you'll find me out there in the next year. Thanks.

In my younger days, I did a handful of track days at Gingerman in SW Michigan. It's a ton of fun, but it's not easy, and there are few better ways to just beat the life out of a car. I'd love to go to Bondurant or otherwise invest in professional instruction, but it's cost-prohibitive for me. It's great to hear an instructor's perspective, and if you really want to commit to being a driver, this is probably the way to go. But for the average person on the street, enthusiast or not, it's a tall ask.

I was fortunate to spend a day with Mike at the SRT experience in Sept 2019. What a blast that was, and Mike definitely made it fun and was Excellent as an instructor. I got to ride a couple of hot laps with Mike at the EOD, and saw what those cars can really do. This school made me a better everyday driver in my Challenger, and if I can convince my wife to let me go for an extended day package, I'll be back! Thanks for everything.

Thanks for this as always Monsieur Goose, hello from French Canada, ie the other end of the Great Lakes watershed we share with Chicagoland. I’m wondering if you’re planning a series on electric performance options and whatever electric ‘racing’ options we’ll have one day soonish. I ask because I recently made the mistake of test driving the Model 3 AWD long-range, and found it intriguing enough to seriously consider. At the moment I drive a chipped Porsche 944turbo which, while epic in a 1980s way, is not a four-season multi-use car the way the Three seems to be. Many questions.
    Thank you.

I’m glad driving mods are being emphasized here, I’ve made a few videos on my channel talking about how spec racing is the best type of racing to start out with and I am making a video called “Mods are stupid” coming soon which talks about how most modifications are a waste of money and that should you invest in your own driving performance instead

If you take a look at any premium auto wreckers website, you'll see the the lack of driver education abound with high end performance cars with crazy horsepower and torque figures smashed foolishly!!!
I totally agree with Mark that it should be mandatory that factory built high performance cars above a certain horsepower and torque require mandatory driver training before taking ownership. It can save lives, reduce insurance premiums and make roads safer with these types of vehicles on them.
Being a better driver and car owner starts and ends with continuous education!!!
