The World Cup In Qatar Has Already Failed

- Qatar's winning bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup in 2010, ahead of Australia, Japan, South Korea, and the United States, shocked the entire world.
Qatar is a tiny country in the Persian Gulf which had no football pedigree, no football infrastructure, insufficient transport and accommodation facilities, a dreadful human rights record, and where it is far too hot in the summer to play a World Cup.
Twelve years on, the bad news is that Qatar have proven to be even more unsuitable and shameful World Cup hosts than even their biggest critics anticipated, but the good news is that their $220 billion project has failed on its own terms before the World Cup has even begun - as HITC Sevens explores in this half hour documentary.
Who would’ve thought a tiny desert country smaller than Northern Ireland with little to no football infrastructure being picked to host a World Cup was gonna be a bad idea ☠️
Everyone, but those taking that decision were corrupted. 🤷♀️

Concerning the topic that host nations don't make money by hosting the tournament: I actually think when Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup it made them as a nation money because of the good reputation. And also for the people itself it was a great time. Something that united them and gave them something to build an identity on
I think for the countries of Germany and Russia it would’ve made them some money. Germany wasn’t a country many were planning to visit or study in before 2006. Atleast not like France, america, Italy. Russia probably the same (at least for 2 or 3 years before the invasion turned the country to shit) as many fans or tourist probably assumed Russia was full of skinheads, hooligans and thugs. Wasn’t really the case even before 2018, but considering that most people from the west were too scared to visit russia, the World Cup in 2018 was probably the only way they were ever gonna break those stereotypes and invite tourists over.
I think that really had to do with the fact the infrastructure (stadiums, internal travel accomodations, hotels, etc.) where pretty much already in place. Places that already have a significant amount of infrastructure (like stadiums it other facilities) for things like the Olympics and WC have made money like when LA hosted the Olympics. Places like Brazil, Russia, and Qatar have had to create everything from whole cloth, therby just sticking the public with a huge tax bill.
I think you should leave Germany alone, may be you should buy them some charcoal and ship it that way this winter that’s more important I think than worries about the the United of their people and profits they did
America did make money for thr 1994 World Cup

besides the reasons stated by Alfie. Big vanity projects like planning for a world cup are also an easy way for corrupt officials to steal money from the funding
It's almost comical how badly this seems to have backfired on Qatar. Back in 2018 and before we knew what we know now about the Russian state, that World Cup did genuinely seem to improve public perceptions of Russia because of how well-run it was. China hosted the Winter Olympics earlier this year and also seemed to suppress widespread criticism of human rights abuses and restrictions of personal freedoms in that country.
The point I'm trying to make is that, sadly, sportswashing can work to improve the image of deeply problematic governments around the world. In Qatar, this just doesn't seem to have happened though. Criticism of the Qatari regime is still happening at full volume and will likely only intensify further when the tournament starts and fans/journalists get the chance to "enjoy" what Qatar has to offer.
Yes sportswashing worked fairly well for China and Russia, but for a variety of reasons (which I hope Alfie will dig further into in one more video) it might backfire badly for Qatar. (and I hope it will)

Imagine how much more money Quatar would have had to spend if they hadn't allegedly scammed hundreds of third world living workers into moving temporarily to Quatar to help build the needed infrastructure to host this? Many of the workers were given fake contracts and then got stuck because they based their budgets on what they were actually offered.. then they were told the real amount and that if they didn't like it they could quit and basically be stranded with nothing. So these workers were forced to stay and live in subhuman conditions until they made enough to get back home. Some workers even died in these dwellings that were given to them and were very muched critiqued as being unsafe and inhumane. This whole undertaking is a shameful thing.
Many of the worker deaths were directly caused by the WC bid. They worsened their reputation, not bettered.

Politicians and cynical people deride migrants, because they have no power, often no money and usually no vote. So why not bash them, they are the weakest? Something that never fails, is Alfie's insights and cynicism. 😊👍👏👏

6:50 West Germany hosted the World Cup in 1974. If you're going to count their trophies from before unification then I guess you need to count 1974 as a WC in 'Germany'.
What a breath of fresh air. Alcohol had destroyed many lives in west. Latin American Europe. Even bible calls it devils poison. Kudos to Qatar
Please keep making videos like this. Anyone who says “get over it Alfie, you’ve made so many videos on these issues already” are exactly the problem and are exactly what Qatar & FIFA want. We will not be silent about this!!!

As bad as the geopolitical issues that occurred during the WC’s of South Africa and Brazil were, they were “standard” issues that most developing and even developed countries face…I don’t think any ethical country on the planet can deem what Qatar has done with this WC as “commonplace”. Displacement caused by the construction of new areas/structures and lack of funding in key areas are unfortunately commonplace in the fair majority of nations, slave labour and poor treatment of migrant workers is downright evil practices of the past, a past that we as humanity had promised to utterly abolish…alas it’s being used to promote a tyrannical nation and is being funded through blood money🤦🏾♂️ .
I’m not disputing that the things that occurred in South Africa and Brazil aren’t bad, but rather they’re complex issues that are hard to manoeuvre around…you know what’s easy to manoeuvre around? Commuting acts that blatantly violate human rights, they may be cost effective but they’re ethically deplorable.
TLDR; As bad as it was for SA and Brazil, Qatar makes their “political issues” look like playground squabbles.
This was a supreme world cup, Messi won the World Cup with Argentina in one of the best finals ever, if not the best! Morocco's performance blew the world, and many fantastic games occurred, it didn't fail in the end, they won it.
That caption should read, "Qatar's winning BRIBE to host the 2022 . . . "
The German YT channel Sportschau (part of the German TV channel ARD) has an amazing documentary with multiple parts about the "world cup of disgrace". Apparently France played a big role in how Qatar got the world cup, which also included Qatar buying Sarkozy's favorite club PSG. It's absolutely crazy.
I love football and I love big events, but I have serious doubts about watching this one.

Don't blame you, just like the Saudi head choppers taking over Sportswashed United this is a disgrace.

Best World Cup final I've ever seen.
World Cup should've been held in Australia or the U.S
U.S. is next, in 2026, but then again the way things go there currently, they are on path to make it the third host country in a row that is not a functioning democracy ;)
Australia is a real struggle due to time difference.

You guys should see how arabs defend qatar in this context 😂😂
They think that the western world criticizes qatar hosting the world cup because of racism againt "islam" and "arabs", something like a conspiracy 😂
I see it in tons of comment sections. Its ridiculous. They either say that or say its "because the LGBT are mad" blatantly ignoring the elephant in the room
There is definitely hate no matter how much you try to make it look otherwise.. good luck to Qatar
Do you ever stop to think why that might be? Or do you think everything the Qatari state does is just peachy?
@@waseemrajab1658 there isn’t any hate, at least from this community here on TH-cam. The vast majority of us are happy to see a World Cup in an Arab country, we just wish a better Arab country was picked, and that it was achieved without human rights violations.
Stop trying to cry about racism when you know that’s not the case, you just blindly support everything that Qatar is doing whilst ignoring the obvious facts. There are many other countries in the region that would have been a better selection for a World Cup, both logistically and morally

What a presentation! Astounding clarity and detail.. supremely well researched.
the world cup in argentina in 1986 was a way to lie the world about the state of the country during the dictatorship
This is all rubbish. The world cup in Qatar is successful and wonderful let the people enjoy football.
Qatar is smaller than and has far less football tradition than the Republic of Ireland yet i highly doubt any WC is going to be held here anytime
Hey if Ireland is able to fork up billions to bribe FIFA officials then who knows 😂
I´d take a WC in Ireland!
Dude
Qatar won the last asian cup
They defeated japan and south korea
Your crying is more beautiful after the success of the World Cup in all respects😂😂
As a South African, I have to say almost everyone was supportive of our world cup domestically and throughout many other countries. It was considered nation building and in retrospect quite cheap to host ($3bn or 3% of our annual budget). The feedback was all positive both internally and externally. Also a lot of people displaced were staying in informal or unsafe housing. I know about the bribes but it was Fifa's m/o to expect favours for hosting. We used our own labour for the infrastructure and created lots of jobs in the process. I'd say it's the last great thing our govt has done before draining the kitty. It's unfair we get paired with such controversial hosts. e.g Brazil public was against the WC and they were full of disasters. Our preparation went as smooth as possible (except for UK tabloids clutching at straws) and some say it was one of the best WC ever
They were supportive of South Africa because they think they are you Savior and treat you like poor victims.
Here here!!!
And South Africa will have half emtpy stadiums that will become like ruins in a decade or so of a time they will never get again.
most underrated football youtuber
The world cup should've been hosted in Malta for sure 😂 only cause I live there
Another consideration is the cost of security measures. I’m sure there will be a heavy handed police/military presence to keep supporters in line, as well as any protesters, which has the possibility of making things worse. On a less serious note, with the WC being held in the middle of European seasons and with so little time for national teams to prepare, the football itself might be rubbish.
Thanks for your failed analysis. Best World Cup ever!! Best World Cup final ever. 🙌🏻🙌🏻💪🏼
I couldn't agree more..
@@susangenafer7110 Excellent final, but the rest of the tournament fas sterile, devoid of the genuine nature of football. Such a shame, but proof that these criminals may be able to bribe the FIFA halfwits they will never have what it takes to organise a decent World Cup. As for the charade regarding alcohol, I am dumbfounded that a) they think a lack of decent beer is not a problem for people from most sane countries, and b_ that the foul-tasting mouthwash called Budweiser is anywhere approaching being a 'beer'. What a load of fools these Middle Easterners are. I found the entire thing a fiasco of the sort rich people think they can create by hurling money around. It didn't work, just like your anti-women, anti-gay bigotry didn't work. We will not see another World Cup hosted by a mozlem dictatorship ever again.
220 bllions spent for one month with 10 percent return , and those stadiums will never be full again maybe only once in a blue moon and will be a constant reminder of how not to spend money , they are hoping to bank on tourism i highly doubt that , global warming in the future and oil and gas every passing day having more competition , electric vehicles and fusion energy now possible , but hey th football itself was great tho...
Ohh dear on what measurments was this the best World Cup ever ? Not even in the top 10.
and all it cost qatar was the lives of several hundred and several billion back handed payments
The last 10 minutes of the video were particularly interesting, the part before that was a repetition of your earlier video. I really hope you can squeeze in another update of this video before the world cup starts. It might indeed fail because of logistics, lukewarm reception, the criticism, and such. Probably all staff in hotel and stadiums will be from Bangladesh, Nepal and India as well. Let's see if we can ask them some questions during the world cup. Thanks bringing into memory 1978 as proof that world cups can fail as marketing campaigns.
And after that failed, the Junta in Argentina invaded the Falklands (Las Malvinas), that failed & the whole regime fell apart soon after.
It's a world cup Argentineans themselves speak very little of.
@@erikthehalfabee6234 Even the players don't talk about that very much. Especially Argentina ones.
Is it the one that had Maradona won the final with an illegal goal that he scored with his hand?
The Problems of The World Cup:
1. It is hosted in a single city with little to no adequate policing for such a large crowd. Hotels aren't even ready for the visitors going to see the World Cup
2. It is highly politicised. Kicked Russia out of the playoffs but still allowing Iran go to the World Cup is double standards.
3. Lots of workers died to build the stadium
4. Injuries of players mean that high quality players will miss the World Cup but imagine the mass number of injuries in the Competition Proper because of a congested schedule.
5. The human right situation (even though I am not too big on this cause everywhere has their own culture and stands on gay rights and they should be respected, but if you are hosting a global competition you should improve your stand on such even if it is for a month cause the world cup is about acceptance of cultures)
Overall I think this will be a great World Cup despite the problems especially the fact that you can see 2 matches in a day and this World Cup has brought awareness to the worker situation over there
This is probably gonna be the most controversial World Cup in the 21st century, I don’t see any other World Cup topping it for now.
Unless FIFA is bribed into letting North Korea or Somalia host, which honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if that happened

About the migrant workers, the number of them dead isn't that excessive considering the 10 year development period. There are many who die in your country as well due to accidents, how do you expect that to not happen in other countries?

Barney Ronay has written a lot of interesting things in the Guardian about how the sportswashing has already been done by this point and that even if the world cup is a failure in the ways Alfie mentions, what it really boils down to is putting Qatar on the map and global security so they can avoid the fate of other tiny oil states like Kuwait.
