FIFA doesn't care about countries' atrocities when considering World Cup hosts. If it was clear that they would make the most money by hosting the tournament in North Korea, then we would have a World Cup final in Pyongyang.

I dont get the argument people made after the copa America that America simply isn’t equipped to handle certain events this big. I feel like it’s very obvious that the US is constantly hosting massive sporting events and even tho our terrorism is horrible, there r almost never any issues inside stadiums. Yet the time that we allow another federation (that honestly may not respect us bc fair enough) to host here it goes haywire. It’s like baking a cake, When u substitute ingredients u should know what goes wrong. We swapped the sports, the people running it, and the fans who r going, yet the ones being blamed r the one who simply followed what conmebol told. There’s definitely other issues with us hosting, but stadium security genuinely isn’t one of them if we r allowed to use our security for them
@ no the security was setup by conmebol completely meaning that the fault is at conmebol. The stadium that it was at has their own big security plan that conmebol rejected for a smaller “budget friendly” one
American approach to Security really isn't fit for Football crowds though. Controlling Football Fan crowds is always about de-escalation, even if some crimes go through, rather than strict enforcement. You can search through football history to see what happens if you don't take that approach.z
@ the 2016 copa America and 1994 World Cup had literally NO issues at all. The issues arose when conmebol took control and conmebol has no IDEA of security to the point that they’ve had to play a Copa Liberatadores (fuck the spelling) in Europe in the last half decade

Are you American? We teach it in our history classes here. 95% of Americans have learned about the My Lai massacre by the time they graduate. RIP to those who were murdered and to Hugh Thompson Jr.
the biggest issue in the us is accessibility to stadiums; some of the biggest american football stadiums for universities often have capacities of over 100,000 people and would culminate in an insane footballing atmosphere, but these are located in college towns with no real public transport to stadiums or enough hotel space for travelers.
We said that about Qatar, yeah it’s terrible what happened to the migrant workers but, most people saw it as the greatest World Cup ever. It should never have gone there but, that’s probably a minority viewpoint
the dig at US transit is so real 😭 fortunately, some of the stadiums are fairly well connected, but many aren't, and are nowhere near what you'd expect in europe and asia.
@@tomo-tawa-linja yup. This is the only valid criticism imo. But tbh, if you can afford to fly to a foreign country for the World Cup then you can afford a couple uber rides. Definitely not as convenient as other countries though but America is massive and too spread out for public transportation

The fact is, this is the second time in 26 years that the USA will be Hosting the World cup. Since England hosted the World cup in 1966,Mexico has hosted the World cup twice ( 1970 and 1986 ) as has Germany ( 1974 and 2006 ).
17:59 Mate you fudged the law here. The United States was never a party to the Rome Statute (the US did sign the Rome Statute, but like many other treaties the state must ratify it to become a party), let alone withdrew from it before the Iraq War. The US (like all UN member states) is a party to the ICJ Statute (in fact a party to cases currently pending before the Court), but the ICJ’s jurisdiction in a particular case requires an additional layer of consent, meaning the ICJ’s jurisdiction across the board is quite patchy. There’s also more to be said on how you portrayed the ICJ’s provisional measures orders.
Exactly. This video was pointless. Just another 40 mins of Alfie fluffing himself and his political views. His country is falling apart and he’s concerned with Americans “being mean” 😭 😂
You are completely brain dead, the argument is why does Russia face all this backlash for doing the exact same thing the americans are doing, in fact the americans did much worse and are not facing anything remotely close to the same amount of backlash
I think there will be affordable tickets for the group stage and not all games at this stage will sell out, because not a lot of people in the US will be interested in games like Saudi Arabia vs. South Korea. But certainly not for the final, FIFA already charges over 900$ for the cheapest tickets at the Club World Cup final, although this competition was never successful and it is uncertain if that will change with the new format.
@@rfvtgbzhn You chose two countries that have millions of their people living in my city alone. I literally am from Koreatown Los Angeles trust me Saudi vs south kroea would definitely sell out
@@jaredfranco10 ok, then maybe take Iran vs. North Korea. Or Trinidad and Tobago vs. Senegal. None of these nations in unlikely to qualify for a World Cup expanded to 48 teams.
I think any country should have the right to host a world cup. Unfortunately it's no longer about votes the world cup is sold off to the highest bidder hence Saudi Arabia being awarded a world cup with no challenge. The beautiful game has been sold & is now an ugly corporate game
You know, I think we should make this like Eurovision and just mandate that the winner of the World Cup host the next one. So like Argentina would have to host the 2026 World Cup now. If the winner cannot host for some reason, then the other finalist should host. If they also can't, then the 3rd placed team. If they can't do it as well, then the 4th placed team. If all 4 of them can't do it for some reason, then and only then should the vote be held. Things that must disqualify you from hosting a world cup: 1) You can't host in the summer. 2) You don't already posses all the necessary infrastructure. 3) You are banned by FIFA or your continental football association(Like UEFA, CONCACAF).
A great idea although I'd also add two rules to ensure variety - one where winners wouldn't be able to host the next five tournaments after winning their first one. Also , I'd say that no continent can host two consecutive tournaments. Applying this going back to 1982 : Since 1982 , we would have had Italy ' 86 ,Argentina 90, Germany 94 , Brazil 1998 , France 2002 , South Korea 2006 (both finalists unable to host , and Turkey being in UEFA rules them out) , Italy 2010 , Uruguay '14 (top 3 cannot host being UEFA) , Germany '18 (the first tournament they can host) , Brazil 2022 (Highest ranked non-UEFA team) and France '26 again ! If we made it 28 years between hosting the last three 2010 would be hosted by Portugal , also we'd have Netherlands 18' , Mexico 22' (highest ranked non-UEFA/non Brazil/non Uruguay) , Croatia '26 (3rd place). A really interesting set of hosts this would be! Thought a few of those countries would struggle)
@caseyf14483 well South Africa is in southern hemisphere and they hosted no problem. Also Argentina and Uruguay. A large part of Brazil is also in the southern hemisphere. So that's not the problem.
Teams would end up deliberately losing in the world up if their nations repeatedly had the burden of hosting tournaments. Look at ireland in the eurovision.
Funny when people say the US doesn’t get criticized, or doesn’t get criticized enough, because we might be the most criticized nation in the world. So much criticism that it’s weird to hear good things about us.
Wouldn't FIFA be better employed as a financial company on the stock- exchange, as it seems much more interested in making mountains of money than it is about football?
0:41 Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta is purpose built for football. It was constructed with the Falcons (NFL) and ATL United in mind, each having their own special lockers and such
@@Patrick61804 it was actually under construction before the mls granted Atlanta an expansion franchise, but you’re correct that it was built for both.
Given the US has a very large size and large population, it seems unsurprising why the US is allowed to host alongside Canada and Mexico. Though to be frank, these nations do have a large enough soccer fan bases, unlike Qatar.
Alfie you should check out John Oliver's Last Week Tonight's episode on Farmworkers. Literally worst than Qatar's migrant workers' human rights violations bc spoiler alert: it involves minors as well. I really don't know how people never go on about this and I feel like you missed out on highlighting this.
Another related point to our farm labor/human trafficking situation in this country is our prison population and prison labor. Not only do we have undocumented people in de facto slavery across much of our food system, but we also have legalized slavery for imprisoned people. This problem is especially pronounced in the south, but it’s a national problem, as evidenced by Californian voters recently upholding the practice in their state. Our whole economy is intertwined with slavery, it never really went away
Yes, very obviously. Frankly, the only annoying thing about this will be the travel. It'll be annoying for the teams if they go coast-to-coast between games, and it'll suck for fans trying to see multiple games without flying (depending on which games they're trying to catch). Otherwise, there really isn't a good reason not to have the US host it. Qatar, Russia, and Saudi Arabia ruin the "must have some sacred footballing culture" argument that some people make. And considering FIFA went into South Africa, so there's literally no leg to stand on regarding "stability" or "safety" or "rule of law".
A big point the video tries to make is, that only because you did something bad once, you have to do it again or that one bad thing invalidates other bad things
The press/media talk a lot about how terrible the government is. Just look at CNN now that Trump is elected, or Fox for the last years while Biden is in office.

It's all academic. The host is the nation(s) that deposit the largest sum in a Geneva bank account. Any nation that finds that morally repulsive is not hosting a FIFA tournament.
If American athletes had incentive to play football they’d absolutely have some world-class athletes, what with the material conditions of the average American compared to some other countries. You could say something similar for places like China, but in America the athletes are pulled toward more lucrative domestic sports whereas in a place like China there just hasn’t been football infrastructure for long enough. If either country seriously pushed their football capabilities they could both be very good
I'm an American, and especially going into 2025, if someone wants to make the case that the US shouldn't host the World Cup on moral grounds, I'm happy to hear the case.

I wouldn’t want anything to happen. 🦅 🧨. 🇺🇸 🤝 🇬🇧 special relationship this and that. Merry Christmas my guy.
I say let them host the thing. Even with the argument that they don't have to build anything they'll still have to spend money on minor reforms to accomodate World Cup matches(which became evident in the Copa América) and also other stuff unrelated to the stadiums themselves which will amount to billions of dollars and on top of that they aren't hosting the event on their own even if Canada and Mexico aren't hosting anywhere near as many matches. I think hosting a World Cup has reached a point of being absurd because of what's expected from the host(s) to the point you're now seeing World Cups being hosted by a multitude of countries or something that's fishy as hell as Saudi Arabia hosting in 2034. Somehow FIFA's greed has gone to such ridiculous levels it all became to this, the World Cup is the biggest sporting event and hosting it may have become just a far fetched dream but outright undesirable. Of course it hasn't gone as far as with IOC and cities outright campaining against bidding to host the Olympics but I wonder if it'll eventually reach that point.
One big thing the next WC has over Qatar or Saudi Arabia is that the stadiums already exist and are and will be used. You don’t need to build stadiums out of nowhere that won’t get used afterwards. Imo WCs and Euros should only go to countries who already have the required stadiums (with some renovations or replacement stadiums) that guarantee a use of the stadium after the tournament

I have to agree. People kept fucking bitching about "Oh X, Y and Z did this!" As if that's relevant to a country that's never done anything in the sport hosting a World Cup ala Qatar. Fucking insane every single time. That said, as an American, the United States not only should host the World Cup. With it being the only country where each participating country could get it's own dedicated state to train in without anyone else near by. So Yeah on those merits, Political stuff aside, the United States should be allowed to host multiple World Cups in the future. Alone. Without needing help from Canada or Mexico.
except that every stadium used for american football games would not be able to fit a actually football pitch inside without renovations. so that tommorow will be in a year, and the required infrastructuur demanded at every other nations will never be met in america (or atleast in the nexxt 50 to 100 years) that being said yes thats about the only viable reason to hold it in america that u dont need to build several new giantic stadiums (and ofcourse the reason for fifa earning more money than anywhere else over the faces off the local population). and than still its a crime mexico city isnt getting the final
The key element of America (and Canada and perhaps Mexico) is that they allow far more criticism of the government and accountability for its actions than has ever existed in Russia or Qatar and especially Saudi Arabia. It's far more free and fair than any of those places. I don't think it's very smart complaining about American media censorship on an American owned platform while not being censored...
Far more free, and yet it is still far from good. It is wise to criticize American media censorship as they are going worse on censorship in the future.
Worth noting that the travel ban is the likely reason Canada and Mexico are included in 2026 at all, given that at that time the Iranian team (who had qualified for the next World Cup) would have been banned from entering the US
That's crazy. Even Qatar allowed Israeli fans (and the Israeli players, if they had qualified) to visit during the duration of the world cup. Even though Qatar is literally financing Hamas.

One angle of this I haven’t seen many people talking about yet is the potential for this World Cup to get caught up in US political culture wars. Especially since we’ll have a conversative-majority government during the event (tho I’m sure it would happen even if that weren’t the case); I could see a really likely scenario where one of our national “enemies” qualifies (likely a team like Iran, Venezuela, etc) and some American grifters try to turn it into a controversy. Next thing you know, Fox News will be running stories about how they’ll be infiltrating our country or whatever, and the morons and grifters who run our country will happily take the culture war victory. There’s also a chance they could try to make a manufactured outrage out of Latin-American, African, and Middle Eastern travelling fans visiting the country. Idk but given the absolutely abysmal level that political rhetoric has reached in this country, I can’t help but feel that something like this will happen in the lead up to the tournament. There’s definitely other issues with us hosting, but stadium security genuinely isn’t one of them if we r allowed to use our security for them
Yeah, I think the US just underestimated football. I'm sure they will learn for the WC

Things that must disqualify you from hosting a world cup:
1) You can't host in the summer.
Applying this going back to 1982 :
Since 1982 , we would have had Italy ' 86 ,Argentina 90, Germany 94 , Brazil 1998 , France 2002 , South Korea 2006 (both finalists unable to host , and Turkey being in UEFA rules them out) , Italy 2010 , Uruguay '14 (top 3 cannot host being UEFA) , Germany '18 (the first tournament they can host) , Brazil 2022 (Highest ranked non-UEFA team) and France '26 again !
Thought a few of those countries would struggle)
so the entire southern hemisphere can't host? 😂
@caseyf14483 well South Africa is in southern hemisphere and they hosted no problem. Also Argentina and Uruguay. A large part of Brazil is also in the southern hemisphere. So that's not the problem.

Not only do we have undocumented people in de facto slavery across much of our food system, but we also have legalized slavery for imprisoned people.

And my country, the US, is hosting in 2026 despite our government’s vast crimes both at home and abroad. Idk I’m rambling but I just don’t see what the point of your comment was.

Every time I see a World Cup stadium, i feel like I should be there playing being well known like Pélé and Maradona.
So basically, every country is not allowed to host because of the past and present controversy right now huh?
The point is exactly that you should disregard distant past as a straw man argument, while acknowledging more recent event that can actually be attributed to the relevant country.

More concerning is the 2030 World Cup having a couple of games in South America but primarily being in Spain and Morocco
No
No it is not at all, it's ridiculous but not more concerning at all.
Ridiculous yes
How so??
I think we all know the reason why they did that - to prohibit a South American country from bidding for the 2034 WC
He makes America sound like a bad place to live. Do all European think this way about the US?
The only reason the US is sharing the competition is because FIFA wants it that way.
Was that a Backstreet Boys reference?
@@stevencooke6451 not intentionally, but FIFA allowing the next World Cup (2030) to remove 3 different confederations from bidding for 2034 probably wasn't a bug to the system. Canada and Mexico couldn't host the whole tournament on their own based on facilities, so the USA would have been involved. So why not let them share a 48 team tournament?
actually no Trump suggested this to to the usa wc bid that america is seen as racist and doesnt share, so we told our neighbors hey get some games too but only gave them 10 each so the usa gets 80 which is more than any other host ever but mexico can stay at azteca til the quarterfinals which is what it really wants anyway, even the liberal press that hates trump was surprised how good he was in negotiations compared to obama who couldnt get the olypics or the world cup while trump got both and will be president for both events.

Alfie forgetting the U.S is one of the countries England has never beaten in a competitive meeting. Jokes aside, as an American, I really do want the U.S to step up their game. The problem is the model for generating talent is so bad and the best players for the U.S come through teams abroad. The way we work with youth needs to change.
There are many instances of one bigger team never beating a smaller team. It doesnt mean anything as there is no US-England rivalry
@napolean_ragland yeah I'm aware of it, just making some banter since Alfie is English and he talked shit about the U.S 😅 but I do know the U.S has work to do with the national team and football in general

Good video Alfie. This is also whataboutary from me but a video on Turkey cohosting the Euros in 2032, despite their past and current discrepancies, would be interesting and informative for people.
This video was quite horrible and biased in favor of the americans, are you this mentally inept?

I never had much faith in FIFA, but the "Let's do Russia and Qatar in one single announcement so we can get ALL the money right now" announcement was when I realized that they no longer even had the shame to even pretend to hide the corruption.
I know that the US is the main host but they should really let Azteca hosts the final and also at least one of the semi-finals, giving it the prestige of being the first stadium to host three finals.
@@nd-mind for sure. I figured that was a shoe in for one of the Mexico locations. Are they not hosting games at Azteca?! If so, that’s whack af
