YHM R9 - A Budget Universal Suppressor

- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 15 มิ.ย. 2024
- Full Disclosure: I purchased and transferred this suppressor out of my own pocket, nothing was provided by YHM for this review, and the contents within are of my own thoughts and considerations.
The Yankee Hill Machine Co. R9 has become one of my favorite suppressors for daily use. Whether it's on a pistol, SBR PCC, or even Rifle, its small size and powerful suppression capabilities ensure I stick with it. There is no other can on the market that offers this much value and capability with little sacrifice.

Looks familiar eh?
Very impressive sound reduction across all of those various platforms. Excellent demonstration of the R9. 👍
I’m very happy with the performance from a universal perspective. It’s such a viable option for any end user.
I just got my R9 out of ATF purgatory a month ago and I'm loving it. Its flexibility is exactly what drew me to it, I use it freely on both my AR15 and AR9.
How long was purgatory? My paperwork was just sent and I ordered the same silencer.

Just got my R9 and I can’t wait to run it in my CMMG Banshee and MPX. This vid helped solidify my decision to purchase. Thank you
Best value around for what it offers!
In most instances when I sell a suppressor the combination/formula I follow pretty often is a AB Warthog (7.62) and a YHM R9. It just covers so many bases/platforms as no one really wants to be switching suppressors back and forth if they don't have to. If you simply understand that suppressed doesn't mean no hearing protection you will love all of your suppressors.
Powerful combo running those two. Great recommendations.
I actually saved this video for future reference, good job, subscribed
Thanks for checking it out!
This was good. Obviously would be nice with some db data to compare, but still delivered a decent subjective comparison. Obviously all these would be magnified many fold indoors. Which would be a really nice video for some of those big youtubers to do one day.
That said, you earned a subscription with this video! Thanks man!
Cheers. Next time I have a shoot house scheduled somewhere I’ll try and get a suppressor review in the mix. We usually run those with muzzle breaks tho 😂
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Well done review! Just subscribed to your channel because of this one!
Glad you checked it out!
Wow! I was considering purchasing the Huxwrx in 7.62 for my 308 and another can to run on my 5.56 AR's, but if I can purchase just one can and cover both calibers, I would be thrilled without having to spend two thousand bucks on two separate cans.
Most - but not all - 308 cans will be 556 rated. Just need to check restrictions against your use case.

Got the YHM r9 for over a year and it’s awesome for versatility and price to performance ratio. The problem is finding free time and enough ammo to go plinking on a consistent basis !
A problem we all relate to!
Awesome video on the R9, keep it up and do some more suppressor vids.
great vid thank you love my r9,turbo k,and my t2 yhm is good stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for this. I am leaning towards this reasonably priced suppressor
You’ll love it. Especially if it’s your first.
New Subscriber today I really love this video and I love yhm cans, best bang for your buck.
YHM has been making good suppressors for decades. It was one of the brands i looked at when I was getting my first cans. But i didn't have any local dealers with them then. AAC was my other choice. I wish there had been the multi use ones available then.... it would have saved me quite some $$$$.
In the end one per gun is the goal ;) so probably wouldn't have saved you money. My r9 to this day still just lives on my mp5
Great review! I feel like this would work great on my 20" Marlin 30-30
Could! Wasn’t able to try that caliber. May do a short review of the obsidian 45 soon on 45-70
@@gatcattill I have the silencerco hybrid 46 on my new Marlin 45/70 😍. I'll be looking forward to that review!
Those first shots with the .300 blk out were absolutely sick. All you could hear was the bolt . More quiet then my Crossman 760 bb gun lol.
It’s insane and I love it
Not raining on your parade but no no its not that quiet, I hate it when people say you just hear the bolt smh, ya if your bolt is making a 125+ dB sound then ya, I don't disagree it's much more quiet but it's still loud loud enough to do permanent hearing damage
Enjoyed the vid. I run a R9 on my 7” AR9. Using tri lug mount. It also spends time on a 9” 300BLK SBR. Xeno mount. Eventually I’d like another can just for the 300BLK. Still hunting for the perfect can for it……. That’s reasonably priced.
exactly, it is perfect for those who have limited can needs - and better if they use them for hunting!
I agree. It was my 1st can. I got a Sierra 5 next. Just purchased a Otter Creek OCM5 for a SPR. Stamp collecting is addictive. No such thing as just 1 NFA item.
Dead air wolfman with keymicro brake for .300blk
@@webuser1284I’ve looked at the Wolfman. very strong contender. Another versatile option.
Love the versatility of the R9. The cycling failures and weapons manipulation foibles were tough to watch.
Doing it under 100 degree temps in one take, it’ll be OK. The walther malfunction I knew would happen - it’s a good demonstration to what you’ll see when you start suppressing so I left it in intentionally.
Sounds real good. I like it.
Great can
This is why I bought the SilencerCo Hybrid 46. One can to rule them All! Mostly.. all!
Great for if you’re suppressing 45 / 458 / 45-70, but if you’re not then you really want a 36 cal can to help keep it slightly quieter!
Hard pass. One of the heaviest cans on market gets even more expensive when you have to buy all the end cap kits.
@@jifffy agreed on weight and size for that option.

I looked at the R9 for a while but went with a Rex Silentium MG7k in 0.358. Big enough bore to clear my 357 Mag lever gun, no barrel length restrictions so I can use it with my 16" 358 Winchester, no caliber restrictions so I can use it with my 300WSM, and a better warranty than YHM.
While I’ll agree that it’s a great option, it’s still more expensive than the r9 ;) although the r9 had a price increase a couple months back it seems. . . About the warranty stuff though, YHM warranty is still excellent. They just won’t honor another vendors mistake. That’s important to understand. And Rex? They are trying to sell their company so if successful where does this leave all their customers?
To be fair, they've had that "for sale" listing for as long as I've known about the company, since around 2018. Most people take it to be a pie-in-the-sky price, not a serious listing. I'm sure that if someone came along and offered the owners of YHM more cash than the company was worth they'd be willing to take the early retirement and bounce too.
@@benjaminpurcell1438 no doubts on that - but the fact they are listing it has been a "discomfort" to some folks on purchasing from them, much like the YHM third party warranty stuff has been a discomfort for others.
very informative and couldn't agree more.

Your homemade can is insanely quiet. Great job.
Thanks! A lot of work went into that one. I love it
@@gatcattill you are extremely skilled. You have a new sub here.
I have an R9 and it works great, but I do find that I still use earpro with 9mm subsonics if I'm shooting more than a couple of shots; The mechanical cycling of the firearm itself, not the shot, is what I find starts to irritate my ears if I don't. it does mean i can wear lighter earpro though. And when shooting 5.56 I definitely still need earpro but the r9 sure helps to make it overall more pleasant for me and those around me.
100% the mp5 action is quiet which is one of its draws. So I feel extremely comfortable without earpro in that configuration. 300 subsonic as well especially from a rifle. Hunting 308? Single shot should be no worries. Range plinking - better ear up.
@@gatcattill, you had me at "mp5" lol. My main 9mm platform is a 5" CMMG Banshee which has a similar mechanical feel as the mp5. Not identical, but I get definite mp5 vibes from it and love it so much, the R9 just makes the experience even better.
Oh no doubt. I run my cmmg banshee with it as well with a forced reset trigger! But action is louder. Have a GHM SD in route for comparison so we will see!
@@gatcattillindeed, the MP5 is a legend for a reason... a few reasons actually, lol. Alas, no MP5 for me (yet?) but we do also have an APC9K which is super sweet to shoot suppressed too. B&T is a whole lot of goodness, just added a KH9 Covert to the mix as well but haven't been out to shoot it... yet.
I'd love to see a side by side comparison with the Liberty Mystic X.
If I secure access to one, I'll reflect back!
Dude great video! It would have been killer if you had a db meter! Question... looks like a park... where are you shooting?!?! 👍
Db ranges that are effective for the needs for gun shots are expensive :( usually why I do it without ear pro for testing to at least give better indication. This is at a private range secluded in over 200 acres
Great suppressors

Thanks for the video. I was born with mild hearing loss and now have severe/profound loss even though I have always worn hearing protection. Some friendly advice, wear hearing protection. It will probably take time for you to notice the damage, but it will happen.
After filming the desert eagle 50 last night and forgetting to put my ears down I feel this.
Totally agree, once it is damage (and it only takes one shot), you can't get your hearing back.
Have you ever used a suppressor?

I just got mine out of jail two weeks ago. Solely for my sub gun.
Best on sub guns. Just use subsonic ammo
I'm looking out buying this for my strip bog as well, already installed the short barrel on it
For someone putting together a "home defense" 300BLK & wanting to go with a shorter barrel what would be your can recommendation if dedicated to simply that firearm itself? Thank you! Great video 👍
If you haven’t started your build yet, and 9” is short. Enough, get the new integral from YHM that has a pin and welded resonator 30 on it. This way you can sbr without actually sbr-ing.
@@gatcattill I simply have one more lower here to "use" up & then plan to be done as I have 4 AR's from 8-18" which with everything else here in the safes is enough. I will check that out👍 Thank you!

@@chrissewell1608 Nope........looking to add a can & be somewhat quiet to not blow anyone's ears out.
Checkout the Omega 9k that's what I have on my 300blk small and light, rated for supers and hearing safe with subs
Is this can rated for 300 win mag? If not, what would you recommend? I also have a 300 blkout pistol with a 10.5" barrel.
Doesn’t show compatibility for 300wm. For bolt guns my go to and favorite cans have been the AB Raptor series with reflex. Get the longest and biggest reflex you can for your setup and you’ll smile every shot. Full review on this coming soon.
I like YHM, I asked my local gun shop about selling me one...dude was like why??? I replied "because they make a good affordable can" ..)
YHM got a bad wrap with folks two separate times. Once when they priced them so affordable and shops were hesitant to recommend them, the second when they changed their warranty terms to void if you use third party mounts. They've clarified on this that it "may" void if they determine that the mount caused the strike or failure.
As long as you don’t need to warranty it your probably good
I think that folks blew that out of proportion to be fair to YHM. They did a cya since they were seeing bad mounts destroying cans and that’s not their fault. As long as you send the mount in and they rule it out as the culprit your warranty is still going to be OK. It’s only voided if the mount was deemed the reason.
Have you anyone else had any experience with both the R9 and the Odin works enduro? I love the fact that the enduro has a titanium body and you can customize the baffle length but i don't want to spend 200 more (cause i need a DT mount in 5/8x24 for my 350 legend which ups the cost of the R9) if the benefits are minimal at best. Also brand longevity. I don't want to buy a suppressor from a company who may not be here in ten years. I don't have that worry about YHM.
No experience with Odin works enduro - but yes YHM meets your needs it does sound like and a dt 5/8x24 will only add about 45 bucks to the cost if you shop around or 65 if you get the YHM branded
The YHM website lists this can at $580, not $400. Does the listed price for cans usually include the $200 tax stamp fee?
Since this video came out demand has shot wayyyyy up with short approval times so pricing is up as a result.
@@gatcattill - That makes sense. Thanks. Yea, I spent a good long while learning how to setup a trust and documenting all my firearms. Then, my local gun shop tells me the wait time for trusts is far more than individual filings 😒 lol. I think i'm going to pass on the YHM R9 anyway because it lacks a flash suppressor tip. I'll be submitting paperwork tomorrow for a .22 suppressor (Asteroid Precision RimFire). Any suggestions on what I should buy for a 9mm pistol and a 5.56 rifle?
@@__-pl3jg if flash suppression is your main purpose, stay away from titanium cans as they give you a decent amount of spark. Rugged obsidian 9mm is a great option for 9 but won’t do 556, if you want to be more universal rugged offers their Alaskan which is a great offer but higher cost. Silencerco 36m is another and I believe you can get the flash cap for that model but haven’t confirmed. Personally if you want to be concerned with flash and 556, Ab Suppressor warthog a10 may be a good option to look into as its duty build and has a nice flash hider end cap. But this would only be usable for 556
How would it be on 6mm creedmore? Point of impact shift?
Probably similar to 308 which is fine for hunting. Poi is always a thing when shooting suppressed, just have to deal with it and leave the can on
My destination is the R9 is like the Wolfman in short configuration am I about right on point or no
Wolf man is better sounding in the slightest way, but not worth the additional coin and length.
@@gatcattillplus you can't shoot 308 out of the wolfman.
Except for the sbr 300 blackout… that sounded like an actual suppressed gun.
300 subsonic is always going to preform well
Its only a value if you are running direct thread, if you want to put it on a pistol or tilting barrel platform, you have to purchase the booster and piston separate which puts you over $600, and there is plenty of $600 pistol suppressors that come with a booster and piston.
That’s covered in the video too.

You can! But it’s expensive. B&T just released their universal hub for surefire but it’s around $500! You can have a fabrication shop turn a surefire warden into a hub that works, but that will cost you a good bit as well (200-300 for the warden and another 250 for the fabrication work). It’s a hard sell
This is the boat im in right now. Trying to figure out what to do with this pin and welded sf muzzle brake. Im sure a bunch of us would appreciate a quick as to what our options are and if you have any examples to show. Thabks brother for the response. Im leaning towards b&t. @gatcattill
@@RickAmey-wc3dx yep you can just get a surefire compatible bt can for cheaper but alternatively you can find a muzzle device that is equal length and get a smith to replace the pin and welded for a different device pin and welded that is better compatibility with your desired can.
