1963 Chevrolet C10 Abandoned for 37 years in a field! Will it run?!?

- I picked up this 1963 Chevrolet C10 longbed 2WD pickup from a pasture where it had been sitting for many years. It was last tagged in 1984. Let's see if this 230 cubic inch inline 6 cylinder engine and 3 speed manual transmission will live on again! If you're interested in purchasing the pickup I do have a clear ND title in my name. I remember my uncle had a dog piss on his trash cans every week. He hooked 120 volts hot to the can and a metal plate with neutral wire next to it. Around midnight I heard a dog blood curling cry and my uncle chuckle. Ouch

@@pookysdad4884 I seen an old chevy dump, no clue what year it was but it had a V-6 in it but it had "hemi" heads on it!? Any idea what that was? I mean plug wires going in the valve covers, "hemi" style? Never seen one before or after but looked like a V-6 hemi to me in an old chevy dump. Would really like to know if anyone knows what I seen!

I’m tuning in from Australia and love to see these old trucks come back from the dead. We never got these old C10’s over here so I’d be the envy of all my mates if I was rolling around in that - yep, even with all those whiskey dents. Sad that you were beat with this one but good on ya for giving it a red hot go!

I was starting to worry. I've gotten spoiled to your vids premiering in the morning.
Put a tow bar on it, remove the plugs and pull it in 3rd gear for several miles. Build up some heat and seat the rings. Be sure you have good oil in it.
Now that would work along with getting sll the water out of the oil with a complete oil change.
I always thought remove the fan and everything and the sparkplugs, put oil in the cylinders and use a huge air impact on the crank to spin it for a good while. Is that possible?

There's a guy on you tube named Jonathan W who started an old studebaker with bad compression by towing it 30 miles an hour behind another car. It was a hopeless cause when he started but he got it running.
The tires would just skid this one was still so stiff.
I got a bunch of old school tools I inherited from my grandfather he use to own a garage before I was born in the late 60's and all through the 70's so I got some good old stuff and it wooks better then most of the new crap that's out today
A little trick an old British mechanic taught me years ago to get engines with low compression started is to heat up the intake manifold. Just shoot the torch into the carb and let it suck in the hot air. Of course not so close it ignites the fuel in the carb but it more times than not will work. I've used that technique several time and it does work.
That, or if it's coughing over on a few but just won't "catch" you can give the (unlit) torch a little "pssssssst psst" down the throathole, just give the ones that are firing a little extra incentive to spin it faster.

My dad had a 1964 chevy pick up,we used it for dump runs in our home town, ketchikan AK. When they are running correctly,& taken care of..they will last your lifetime!!
I love this truck. I'm on disability and live in missouri. If I had money and it was running with a title I would buy it in a heartbeat. Because I know if mortske got it running it would be good to go.
Just Love the "Valve Adjustor" and we all laugh no matter how many times we heard it.
You should make a sticker that says Duff Approves with the sticker being an outline of duff standing up and have some little motion marks around his tail like it's wagging. Cheers!

When I was a young boy my dad’s friend had a really nice c10 short bed with a mean 409. That truck was so freaking scary for a kid but my dad loved riding in with me and I can tell you I didn’t care much for it. Boy I wonder what one of those trucks are worth today.

"Gotta start, it's a Chevy." At least you can sell the glass out of it. That 230 was a solid motor for GM for years. We had that motor in a 2o ft. inboard outboard boat as a Mercury Mercruiser for 42 years. I was going to rebuild the motor but I couldn't get seals for the sterndrive from Mercury so the boat got donated to Goodwill. It was a solid motor in its day with a ton of torque and frugal on the gas. It could pull 2 slalom skiers easily in its day.

Mortske, you can start this thing. First, to raise compression, don’t pour Marvel in the cylinders- it’s too much, and too light. Use a heavy oil, like 50 weight, and just use maybe an ounce. That’ll stick around the rings and it won’t coat your plugs. Use some ether, it has a lower flash point. If the starter won’t make it kick, tow-start it! Once you get it running, those rings will wake up from their sleep and start to seal, and once the engine runs for a while it’ll start every time. C’mon, be a hero! Show us that you can do it!

Pull starting definitely will help. It'll get it moving fast enough to make compression. That old starter was moving it awful slow.
I love that you show the pain and frustration of working on cars! So many people think you just get your hands in there and wave them around and voila it all fix(said with Arabic accent)!

I learned to drive 3 on the tree in my Dads 1970 C/10. Southern truck brought to central NY. She was cherry after the Turquoise paint job. Glad to see guys saving these old machines for posterity!

Hey Mortske and Duffer's!!! This is the exact same kind of truck and year that I learned how to drive a stick when I was 13!! Got to drive down fire Lanes,, bow hunting season,,ect. Good memories of my late Dad.

Good Video--Thank You for the Tenacity You put in this. Too good of shape for somebody not to Love & Want this with an easy title. Condenser is the old term for capacitor. If I were doin' "Will it starts" I'd would want a set of Cap, rotor & points on the shelf. Saves Time & swear words & aspirin. lol
Having a Good HOT spark, Helps Save the starter, lol & the condenser has a lot to do with it.
Once you'd get it fired off, you can always throw the old parts back in & new parts back on the shelf. Even Puddin had troubles with *thee capacitor* not too long ago.

Yeah I had one as a kid that I saved from the dog pound someone left him tied up to a pole I guess and I got him named him king and he was my shadow use to follow me everywhere and loved to swim I lived on lake Erie one of the great lakes and he use to jump off the dock with us he was a great dog

Kroil is amazing stuff, a machinist friend of mine introduced me to it some years ago and I've been using it ever since. Best penetrating oil I've ever used.👍 Marvel Mystery oil is great stuff too.

That thing was soooooooo close to starting. I was hoping there was one last Hail Mary , oil the cylinders , starting fluid and a battery charger on engine start. Great effort , Better luck on the next one. Can’t wait to see what’s next
Yeah I shoulda kept after it but I was a whole week deep into this thing!
So waste a week instead of spending another day on it and see it running and starting every time. After a week you should know it will start and then stay with it and start it. Your reason for quitting doesn't make any sense to me. It was a reason to get busy and finish it. Repeat after me. If it breathes it will run. That is all you need to focus on.

One of the reasons I like manual transmissions is that you can pop them in a high gear and rock the vehicle to check the engine's not seized!

C10 it would not quit
The only problem was after 375 thousand I had to keep tighting the damper pulley to much play but never flew off

My 66 C-10 was my class project when i took auto mechanics at the jr college . We went thru every system on that old truck even put headman split headers on that 235 6 banger and dual bowl master cyl. With new brake lines . Ended up with a nice short box step side truck , love the body lines on those trucks !!

Could have done a rebuild in that amount of time. Pull it and freshen it up. Who needs to see another 350 drop in (I’ve got nothing against 350’s). An old 230 is at least a little more fun. My first set of wheels was a 61 step side that my father bought for me. It was radio delete and heater delete. I drove it until November when the snow started.
Agreed,alot of work to reuse gaskets and stuff. Could have freshened her up in the time and money waisted.
If you have to valves adjusted in correctly it will be hard to turn plus it not opening the valves enough. Zero lash , just tighten until the slack is gone and you can still spin the push rod.

I’m a welder in a shop that builds annealing Furnaces and we have these massive fixture tables that we use to build the roofs. Whenever a guys boots start to wear and the steel toe shows through you sneak up while he’s on that table with his toes down and tack the toes of his boots down to the table real quick. We’ve also welded some tool boxes shut before (not nice boxes, just cheap carry boxes).
Love the videos , Duff is truly an awesome dog 🐕. I'd like to make a suggestion, in the video it sounded like it was cranking to slow to start, wouldn't hurt to put a jumper pack or charger with boost on it.. an I'd bet it would fire right up ..
It was just so stiff it wouldn't spin fast plus it didn't have much compression.

I learned this 40 years ago. Standard transmission fluid will ignite in a cylinder. Pour it in the carb as you crank the engine it will bring the compression up and start and run on it. When you stop pouring the trans fluid if it stops after the fluid is all you have a fuel delivery problem or it needs timing chain.
If its a stick shift I will pull the plugs and soak the cyls for a time. Might even pull the valve cover and check for stuck valves, Then before attempting to start it. Hook it to the wrecker and drag it down the highway with it in high gear. I go about a mile and turn around . Usually that limbers them up enough that they fire right up. Im like that Old Farm Junk 101 guy. I like to piddle around and get something running without spending money. once I hear it run and drive it a little. I just park it and let it be part of the hoard. Ive got stuff that Ran when parked . Drove to the spot where they are setting And havent been started in decades.

Pull it down the road with it in gear. That's how we started our '54 Chevy truck most of the time.
The engine was too stiff, tires would just slide.
Did you try it or just give up because because of what you thought about it. I think you still should try it. I would bet a dollar I could do it and I never bet. If it skids the tires you just grab a higher gear.
try some oil in the cylinder instead of the penetrating oil.
Like 40 or 50 weight. Builds the compression longer. Put a new Schrader valve in your compression tester and open the throttle when compression testing. Keep the battery booster on to spin over faster. Lastly, if you had brakes tow it to start it in gear.
Thats one of the reasons MORTSKE IS LOVED he always has a battery at avail

After watching this over again I'm tempted to bring it it and try 24 volts, adjust some timing, maybe tow it around like all the experts recommend! Maybe that will boost compression!

I use to push start vehicles that had low compression and get it running and usually with the engine hot the compression would go up as the rings start loosening up
Puddin doesn't use no stinkin torch ... he just lights the whole engine bay on fire.
Hi Mortske : I don't want to read all these comments to find out , but has anyone told how to use a compression gauge yet. You take your finger off of the button.
You put the gauge into a plug hole (it's best to have all the plugs out & the carb wide open) then hit the starter go three compression strokes , write it down. Then press the button . Do the whole engine like that , that way it's all consistent. There's ways to read this stuff (you can find this online) from what I understand , if your readings are decent and within 10% of each other you have a decent engine.

You are very thourough when breaking down the vehicles, nitty gritty of the issues..puddin would never ,even if he could. The best video ,we think..eould be if you put your camera onto a tri pod ,then do some brodies in the 1959 grain truck!! That eould be a sweet video,that we would share repeatedly with everyone we know!! I do br odies in me car regularly,especially when mud puddles are involved!! Such a stress reducer!! Put dry ice on top of the pistons. Cold schrinks the pistons and loosens them from the cylinder, heat expands them and locks them up.
Around the 53min mark when it finally turns over and makes that old timey cartoon squeaky sound, I laughed out loud so hard. Keep up the good work!
I'm to lazy to read through the comments, but you take the wire from the condenser stuff it in a spark plug wire ground the body of condenser and crank engine over and she'll get full of the spark... We used to charge em and throw em to people they usually end up touching the wire and the body of condenser and boom...
