Unless you track your car, or live in an area with pristine roads, Lowering Springs on OEM Struts is the way to go. I've tried KSports (with multiple spring rate setups) and BC Racing with Swift Springs, as well as custom lowering springs that ended up being the best of them all. The only reason you'd want coilovers over lowering springs is the ability to change dampener settings on the fly. Otherwise, for the street the harsh KSports turned on a dime, but bounced so much that I hit my head on the roof whenever there's a bump in the road. BC Racing is much more comfortable, but somehow doesn't initiate turns as aggressively as my lowering springs, and bigger bumps and dips still shook the car way too much. At +20%F/+25%R spring rate for my 4,100 lbs wagon, it turns a tame family wagon into a sporty family car that can handle just about everything you throw at it. It turns almost as good as the KSports with slightly slower turn initiation, holds the corners almost as well, and have none of the discomfort (a girl who knows nothing about cars gave the KSports a 3/10 for comfort and lowering springs a 7/10, IMO that much gain in comfort is worth the 0.2 second delay in turn initiation). I'm sure AIR is smoother than lowering springs, but I don't actually want something that smooth because of the way I drive. And because of the progressive nature of air, I'm sure it'll be slightly slower on turn initiation even if it holds the corner just as well.

This is literally my dilemma with my focus. I love the space from it being a hatch and just hate to ruin it with a perm tank. But I do love the functionality of bags. The struggle is real.
Air suspension still has a lot more potential to unlock. The nonlinear nature of air springs requires well tuned nonlinear dampers to really show what they can do.
People mismatched the air spring with the dampers and then say it's shit when it doesn't work well. You can definitely race on air suspension and some people actually do

I had a Honda with air suspension many years ago and I had a ton of fun with it, could take my car thru places others couldn't and my wheels were secured at night because my body kit would sit completely on the ground, wheels tucked. It was really fun... until it wasn't. Custom paintjob basically went to shit due to the ripples down the doorskins, quarterpanels and trunk and numerous parts broke from the crazy amount of flex that system had. It was a 10 switch system; front and rear, side to side, full car and individual wheels all had a pretty decent range of lift and drop, going higher than stock and flush with the ground. I went thru body kits A LOT. The final straw for me was when the rear end dropped on the freeway with my kids in the back seat. Nope. Never again.
@Jose Adame Hahaha yeah air suspension can be rough, however, when it's set up appropriately and specifically to the vehicle, it's badass and sometimes saves your ass!! I don't know much about Range Rovers and their setups but I'm assuming you're running an aftermarket setup?? Or do those things come stock with an air setup?? My Honda already had the air ride setup on it when I bought it (I was 19 lmao.... bought a project car from a car lot.... never do that!!!) and I loved it, but it wasn't done right so it would slam the body kit on the ground completely~got expensive really quickly!! Mine didn't have limiters tho because they were air shocks only, no bumpstops basically. Depending on your setup etc, you should be able to level those out to be flush.... Lower end setups tend to have issues in this area, same with coilovers. I'd have a professional look at and fix them if it were me. You may need to upgrade your system to a better setup but most of the work is already done at least!! Good luck with it tho. I've got coilovers on my car, however, I'm gonna upgrade to a higher quality setup as soon as possible. Raceland ultimos are chill for the drop but no adjustments & fine tuning options, no camber/caster plates available, troublesome, bouncier than I like and I can't adjust damping/compression/rebound etc.
@Jose Adame gotcha. Can I offer you some advice?? It's really nice that you have a dad that will help you out with this type of stuff (do something nice for him man...) but you're gettin ready to take on the world on your own ~when your dad's out there fixing your ride, get out there and learn. Help do the work and take the initiative to have him teach you all basic maintenance skills, plus everything else you can learn. You'll save money by doing your own work (like thousands, no joke) and if something inevitably happens with any one of your future vehicles and your dad can't get to you, you won't be stranded waiting for assistance. Plus you'll have confidence and reward of doing your own work, which is great!! I actually have my 10 year old son doing all my oil changes (since he was 8 years old lol,) rotating my wheels and helping me with anything I'm working on. I want him to be self-sufficient when he's an adult so I'm starting him young.
I want to get some air cups, an air/coilover hybrid for my 370Z. All I want to do is give my car a variable ride height suspension and damper kit. Tie this into an ECU and find a way to adjust steering wheel stiffness to create a "Driving Mode" selector. You know, Track, Sport, Comfort. It would be nice to cruise day to day without feeling like someone karate chopping my neck all the time, yet corner like a boss when I want to get serious.
You guys should really talk about the inbetween. Bag over coils air suspension. Using an air management system. And using universal air bags. And coilovers as a strut. Yes this goes against your sales pitch. But it by far the most probable way to go for someone who wants a it on air budget. Anyone that's interested in this look at blaine nojiri's videos on his Z's set up. Very informative. That's the super cheap way. If on a budget I would get the universal bags, ebay coils. And the 3H system. Hook it up and boom. Your good to go. Im trying to go silvers or zeal coils 9k front 7k rear, UAS bags, and a 3H management with an endo CVT. So if I ever want to hard drift. I can switch out the air bags for the springs. Disconnect the air wiring for the management. And go at it. And switch back when/if I want. Literally the best of both worlds.
So im thinking of running air suspension on my ride and here are the conditions: There is really only one track near where I live so that means that I wont get much time on it. the roads here are complete ass so It'd be cool to be able to bring my car up after showing it off so that I don't scrape anything and finally I think being able to lift and lower when ever you want is pretty cool.
I work at an air ride shop, and you would be amazed at the stuff air can do now. It's more reliable, and sophisticated than it used to be. That being said, it is expensive especially for imports, classic cars like impala's, Continental's are cheaper. But if your one of those guys that wants to drive it, and never work on it coilovers are definitely the way to go. Good video
Nice dude I don't blame ya I hate having to worry like that! Does your car have wheels or anything aftermarket to it done? If so you should upload your STI to our gallery man we would love to see it! 🤟 bit.ly/2Ma4oca
The problem of going bags or coils are those who only have 1 car as their daily.they wanted that slammed look while sacrificing drivability/function.so when the issue occur soon, then they start regreting things and end up spending more for fixes and rental car.
Air bags can be affordable if you know what your doing Specially if you use nonConstant switches A lot of times if the management that doesn’t work that well anyway that’s pricey part I have $1300 into a kit thats been in my car going on 5 years with no problems
What about speed humps and areas that would scrape the under of the car? Bags make it useful to drive low and rise to go over those things. Coilovers for the tracks🔥
I've *_ALWAYS_* wanted air. Especially hard dump jumpers so I can hop on gas. Yes they're not as powerful as Hydraulics but it's just so cool being different and still hopping, on bags more powerful than everybody else's.
static and reasonable height, you can drive everywhere no problem with a bit of caution on bumps and driveways, it handles amazing and you don't have to deal with all the additional weight, complexity, and compressor noise clusterfuck that air brings into your trunk. One occasion where I like to see air are land yacht vip builds, they aren't practical anyway and don't handle either so air could be a cool party trick on those
Air cups are a good option best of both worlds I would choose cup over bags in heartbeat my main reason for going statics is I do not want to be stranded I have seen it when an air line goes out or a bag and your air out and can't drive plus it takes balls to drive a static car
@@Kev27RS dont go too low for coilovers? Fcking common sense no shit and itd jst a scrapenit wont fcking kill the car, and air lifts r for looks no fuctions shits trash period
The biggest thing about air is having to winter proof the lines, gotta do like the truckers do, they gotta a gaseous antifreeze product to put in the lines during the winter to keep them from freezing the air
Basically one approach requires you too manually change the spring end stop location but this leaves ride height and spring rebound independent of one another. While the the second approach offers you automatic height adjustment but will cause an increase in spring rebound when raising ride height and vice versa. Beyond spring rebound and manual vs automatic ride height adjustment there is little too no difference in the two approaches as either air bag or metallic springs can be mounted to pretty much any strut you may want (ie. dampening adjustment). So the general view that show cars benefit from bags and track cars benefit from coils is objectively pretty accurate.
Didnt think about this till I had wrote the comment but on a hypothetical basis if one could produce air springs that only changed pressure independent of height and magnetic dampers you could make an extremely effective active suspension system that could dynamically respond too both road and driving conditions
Installing a fully-adjustable coilover on a car without properly setting it up is posing. It may look nice in your sigline, but you're actually hurting the car's handling. With an adjustable damper and adjustable perch heights you have just introduced new variables into the system of which you may have no understanding. If you don't understand them you are bound to under utilize them or worse: screw it up and actually take a step back in performance. "Aftermarket" does not mean "better", although you'd never know it from the signature envy on forums. Too many people purchase dampers without knowing WHY they want new ones in the first place. If you don't truly understand how the properties of a damper impact handling, how do you suppose you're going to adjust it properly? IMO you can't use it properly, but the kids at the local drive in will automatically think it's cooler and when you get down to it that is what most people are buying: coolness factor. Coilovers get really old in a daily driven car. They, are not meant for a daily driver, or even a casual enthusiast. They are for the track, and are adjustable for a reason.
One aspect of air suspension that I don't see discussed is from a handling perspective. Historically convention coils (springs or coilovers) have been the norm for performance applications. What I'm curious about is if air suspensions have evolved to the point where your average enthusiast can have the best of both worlds: super adjustable ride height *AND* a suspension that can handle the demands of a track car. I'm old school and have always associated air with cars that want to look cool, but are mostly cruisers. I love the look, but would never want to sacrifice the handling capabilities of a coilover or regular ol' coil sprung suspension. Do these air suspension companies offer options for those of us who daily drive a low car, but also hit the track on occasional weekends? That's something I'd really be interested in learning more about. Thanks, guys, and keep up the good work on the channel.
I have a McPherson type suspension meaning that an inch and a half is the lowest max for a great handling car due to its former design. This is my reasoning for this option. Personally would bag my wifes 2016 Corolla over my 1989 VW Fox. All about how it works.
Luis Vera what are they like? was told a few days ago it’s like riding a 3 wheel motorcycle 🤔not sure how that can be but saw a video on TH-cam and they looked ok
I got Coilover for my Honda Ridgeline 2019 on my 22s inches Rims low profile tire I had to change sway bar linkage... looks sexy and I can take corners at 60mph without any under or over steering...
Hoboe Mojo coilovers are just better period it’s new suspension components also u can lower it more than springs .... springs are if u just want your car to look nice with your wheel to fender ratio
I did that for nearly 4 years when I was a kid and while you can get used to it..it quickly gets old once you buy a brand new sports car and drive it. You're also forgetting about being limited on where you can drive your car . Depending on the roads you can completely tear up the bottom end of your car if you're not observing the road for minor dips. The way I see it..anyone who has a car strictly for track use has all the reason in the world to lobby for static. However those who hate on bags and ride coilovers on daily drivers are just unable or unwilling to spend the extra money on something more practical for daily use. Why drive that way and subject yourself to an uncomfortable bumpy ride ? Why limit yourself to one height vs 4 at a push of a button ? It has to be to save money.
@@blkeclipsel2400 of course its to save money but I also like the way static rides. And yeah you gotta pay extra attention. Ive never had an issue messing up my car, you just have to pay attention and be careful
For a guy that had both coilovers are far better for one on my bag setup feels like it dosen't have any suspension at lower pressures and higher pressures my new weals are now destroyed because the air suspension was not springing it works on small bumps around 1 inch bumps then it dosen't I tried everything to make them work but in the end and $5000 later I just went with coilovers with the bags lifters now its soft and it can be lifted and lowered wherever and the small helper cups also act like a helper spring on a coilover the mane reson bags are not smoth on cars is simple there is not enough air volume to be used as a good enough spring its eather to much or to little air to much to stiff to little you bottom out and right in the middle you get the performance of a race suspension system but no comfort at all if you have low profile tires get ready to spend thousands on rim's and tires constantly how my system worked was the tier was the suspension and the bag just dampened the blow then why do I have shocks for it just was a unpleasant experience eather stay stock or go coilovers unless you want a car that is extremly hard over the smallest bumps making you jump out of your seet from a small pot hole that regular suspension would have absorbed 85% of I prefer stock suspension on my car its already extremly good but I do like adjustable shocks and the customizability of coilovers and the ride quality isn't that bad

Is air no good for oof road then? I don’t need an off-road focused set up. I have at 06 forester xt. But it’d be cool to be able to go from a low street ride height to a higher one for some clearance when accessing trailheads or lakes/mountains
I live in NYC and there’s a lot of speed bumps and potholes. Like I’m on the bus and in the time it took me to type this out we hit like 7 potholes already..... make that 8. So what do you recommend? Bags or Anything else
I live in the UK so roads are quite bumpy so it's quite a difficult decision coil overs would be better for racing and drifting but I'll end up scrapping my car on the road all the time we're as on bags, I can raise when driving on roads the lower when at a show
The two 86's hurt my brain. No matter what you run for suspension please don't run camber like that. Ruin your wheels and takes away performance. I simply can't understand why people do that to their cars.
Great video.. 1 question.. Coilovers are not adjustable on the fly.. but can be adjusted.. How ? and im in Cols Ohio , tip for finding a good shop to install..
What about for offroad? Can you use air suspension to sightly lift a car and then lower it to stock or slightly lowered ride height? Looking to use it for when you get stuck you just lift it a bit and bam. No longer high centered.
Air compressors and tanks belong on 4x4’s/overlanding rigs, not in performance cars. Cars that serve no purpose other than to ‘look cool’ (being a completely subjective interpretation) are a waste.

There are 2 candy red wheels behind you. What are the models? We're looking for wheels right now. Thanks

coilovers all the way all I want in my car is simple look but absolutely reliable so when it comes to suspension coilovers is my bet.
All I want to know is what do I have to do to make my camry suspension as smooth as a new s class merc. Luxury

No tank. No compressor. No airlines. It probably is lighter.

Always been in love with Coils, bags dont fit my personality honestly lol
I love in Pennsylvania, which is like huge pot hole central, coils suck out here, but we make due. But love bags too lol
had Bilstein PSS9 coils on my E36 and loved them, once I move out of Denver will definitely get some K&Ws for the M3
So im thinking of running air suspension on my ride and here are the conditions:
There is really only one track near where I live so that means that I wont get much time on it.
the roads here are complete ass so It'd be cool to be able to bring my car up after showing it off so that I don't scrape anything
and finally I think being able to lift and lower when ever you want is pretty cool.
All pretty justifiable reasons to get air! LOL for real though based on your explanation air seems practical for you.😬bit.ly/2JYmf62
Good video
Been riding static for a minute and still contemplating if I want air ride or not
I needed this video. I wanted air suspension on my STI but I think I'll go with coilovers. Don't want the maintenance issues.
Nice dude I don't blame ya I hate having to worry like that! Does your car have wheels or anything aftermarket to it done? If so you should upload your STI to our gallery man we would love to see it! 🤟 bit.ly/2Ma4oca
Park it how you ride it, that’s my motto
I live with air ride in my semi truck. I will definitely be installing them on my car when I can.
That’s why I choice coil overs because I didn’t want to deal with maintenance.
Going with the air suspension for my G37xs🔥🤟🏾💫
What about speed humps and areas that would scrape the under of the car? Bags make it useful to drive low and rise to go over those things. Coilovers for the tracks🔥
True, but hypothetically what if a main air line breaks. Then you’ll be in big trouble because you’re lower than coilovers usually are
@@coloranalist5193 fair enough then you'll have to be careful and monitor it like most aftermarket car parts used on the daily.
One occasion where I like to see air are land yacht vip builds, they aren't practical anyway and don't handle either so air could be a cool party trick on those
So ur saying u rather do air on a ls400 vip build than coilovers
Air cups are a good option best of both worlds I would choose cup over bags in heartbeat my main reason for going statics is I do not want to be stranded I have seen it when an air line goes out or a bag and your air out and can't drive plus it takes balls to drive a static car
The respec from static guys is 100% more than bagged guys. Thats the main reason.
Nsthan Vue agreed! Bagged guys all have a attitude like their the greatest thing ever

I'm trying to learn and mod my car and i would like to put coilovers. Would you please make a comparison video of cheap vs expansive coilovers?
Great suggestion! I bet we could get a lot of views with something like that!
Didnt think about this till I had wrote the comment but on a hypothetical basis if one could produce air springs that only changed pressure independent of height and magnetic dampers you could make an extremely effective active suspension system that could dynamically respond too both road and driving conditions
me: *drives a muddy jy with leaf springs* "hmmm, what to choose, what to choose?"
Air ride started as just for looks but now can do what coil overs do and with better ride comfort can control rebound and compression too
you can easilly upgrade your air suspension by putting coilovers
AkumaYuki lmao
Yeah just going to go coilover. Great video!
I mean coilovers can still be nice for everyday driving. Sometimes stock suspension gets old and worn out over time plus weather effects these things.
Wheel Addiction check out Airlift
What if you do both?
I have a McPherson type suspension meaning that an inch and a half is the lowest max for a great handling car due to its former design. This is my reasoning for this option. Personally would bag my wifes 2016 Corolla over my 1989 VW Fox. All about how it works.
Do a video about jnc wheels
Yes!
Coil and air is like build for track or show. One is better for one thing and other for other stuff. You put what you need.
💯
What do supercars have then because some can lift to clear speed bumps and driveways
I want to buy a Brz and wanted to know if I should save up for the coil overs first or tires and wheels when starting from a stock set up.

Why do lowering springs over coilovers? Or vice versa?
Hoboe Mojo coilovers are just better period it’s new suspension components also u can lower it more than springs .... springs are if u just want your car to look nice with your wheel to fender ratio
The solution of going over speeds bumps and pulling into places is going in at a angle so if you have a static setup that is the solution
You should make the wheels on the wall spin like if they were spinners
I like to see rims moving fast cuz its the only time you get to see them in action and how they look when they spend
Static because, I personally don’t like the tucked lip to fender look anyways.
I like slight poke with tire to fender.
I run K w in my mk4 R32 An it handles like no other , been on bagged cars an just don’t appreciate the ride

Seems like the ones always talking crap is the static hype boyz. Deep down they want to be on air.
Yeah definitely a set of good coils is needed at that point! How is the bus in NYC is it pretty wild lol?

Fitment Industries just trying to get a good idea of what i want to do to my car before i get my car.... if that makes sense lol
I was waiting for someone to make a video about this.
Glad we could be here to help 😂👍
There should be a dial on of the coil to adjust the height, Sadly there is no on the fly adjustment!
Fitment Industries thx, great website
You forgot to mention that if you're taking your car for more of a performance setup, then coilovers will be MUCH better for that setup.
The road is too bad in my country to drive low on the ground. So bags are the best down here. Low when in the show and high when on the go
Finally you touched on this! I almost unsubscribed.
I'd love you guys to do a review of this review now we're in 2020.
who else jus here watching them rims behind
What about for offroad? Can you use air suspension to sightly lift a car and then lower it to stock or slightly lowered ride height? Looking to use it for when you get stuck you just lift it a bit and bam. No longer high centered.
4:02 anyone know the drivers info ?
Lets putt it this way spend 3K on bags to drive in the streets and not have issues or spend 1k on coils and 2k on a turbo set.... but love them both!
Air compressors and tanks belong on 4x4’s/overlanding rigs, not in performance cars.
Cars that serve no purpose other than to ‘look cool’ (being a completely subjective interpretation) are a waste.
IDK dude. Mustang vert on bags gets Cougars like no other and a S/C coyote can scoot-scoot when you need to Haha
