- I bought the OEX Bobcat 1 tent, with the OEX Expedition tarp.
In this video I set them up in the garden, have a good look over them, and share my first impressions.
I was particularly keen to see how much head room there is inside, and get a sense of whether there's enough room in it for filming vlogs. And generally I wanted to see how it feels as I'd like to wild camp in it.

LOL, lots of people have said that about my bobcat. But truth is mine is quite easy. The one I struggle with is the bandicoot, particularly in the rain. It's nearly impossible on that tent! Btw, love your channel name! 😊

Really good review ! Just what I wanted. I've been looking at compact tents for months ready for next year and this review has finally made my mind up. I agree it's so important to be able to sit up inside. I had a "coffin tent" once and it had to go. At Go Outdoors, they have the Bobcat 1 on display and the moment I tightened a guy line it fell apart as you mentioned. So I worked out, as you did, to use a double knot. Much better to have this sorted before camping on a dark wet night ! So thanks again.

I used to work at GO outdoors Manchester, I bought one of the first editions of the bobcat's predecessors, the North ridge col, I've camped in the winter in it and can say in all honesty that it's a very warm tent for winter camping. I butchered mine and modified it, getting it down from 1.9kg to 1.6kg......which became the col lite. (I got no acknowledgement for its design) there are still improvements to be made but for the price it's a great tent.
That's cool. Sorry you didn't get any acknowledgment for your creativity. My dad was an engineer back in the day and he too developed a couple of widgets that weren't credited to him. So I know what that's like. Thanks for your comment 👍
I was working my way to this one Jonathan. A super review - you made it kind of gripping. Happy to hear that it gives you what you were seeking. I look forward to the proper test when all things are clear. I've used Six Moons Design and Nordisk for some years and so it has to be light for me but this was great. The weight was fair I think for what you get and get a lot. Well, all the best out there. Mark

I do like those high end brands but could never justify it. I 'hike' from the car to the beach/woods. So OEX is a good fit for me. But who knows where this hobby will take me... 😀👍

Thank you! I just would recommend that if possible try to view it in a showroom, as I think my enthusiasm overstated the spaciousness. There's just about enough room. But as I said, it's a great tent!

I've been so on the fence with this tent but this is the most informative review I've seen so far, no one else has measured it! I'm 185cm (but skinny) so this might be the slightest bit too tight, might have to chance going to one of the outdoors shops to see if they have it on display.
Oh, at 185 you'll definitely benefit from seeing it from the inside. I would guess that it's a bit too small for you. Go Outdoors usually have them on display. Good luck mate 👍and thanks for the kind feedback.

This is the best demo and review of the bobcat 1 I've seen so far, I'm in the market for another tent and have been thinking about this, although every man and his dog has one now 🤣😂 Good tent for the money, I struggle with my Terra Nova Zephyros 1 , zero space inside although there's enough room for kit in the vestibule... I purchased it on impulse because it only weighs 1. 5KG but another 500g won't make much difference I suppose. Cheers Lee
Thanks! Yes space is an issue. I've used this tent now a handful of times and invariably in the middle of the night when I need an item (torch, water, etc) I can never find things. This is because any movement when sleeping, pushes your belongings around so they're never where you left them. And the side pockets are very slack so everything falls out. But the tent does have charm and I really like it!

It's now a couple of months and 5 or 6 wild camps since I got this tent so I can give a bit more of a review: the tent has a lot of charm. I like it a lot. It's my go-to tent for sure. But, and this needs to be emphasised, it's much smaller than I originally perceived it to be. So that's the only drawback. Otherwise a great little tent! If you decide to go for it I do recommend seeing all set up at a showroom first. I'll got and check out your channel now... Atb Jonathan

It's interesting that you bought it partially on the basis of the olive colour in the ads, too! I was thoroughly disappointed, maybe even annoyed that they had intentionally made it a more attractive colour in the ads.
I've just bought the Onetigris Tangram which looks to be a take/design off the 3f UL 2 man lanshan. I'm keen to go ultra light with natural colour, so I'm hoping Onetigris end up doing a version of the Lanshan 1 in coyote brown.

Enjoyed that. Good review. I’m looking for a smaller 1/2 man tent at the moment and was concerned that as a 1 man there wouldn’t be much room, but the porch/vestibule is a good size. Subscribed. 👍🏼

Good buy there buddy... I like the tarp over tent , there’s a few ways to put it .. I’ve got phoxx 11 v2 & 3x 3 DD Camo tarp .. I camped at weekends during lockdown down .. it was Awesome with the tarp up .. as weather was not good .. had tons of frost one night but was super warm in the tent thanks to the tarp .. next year I’m getting a vango banshee 300 .. for camping with Sam .. plus thinking of a DD tarp tent tipi ..or the Hex peak v4a tipi ... cheers Chris & Sam

Thanks for your review. I think the OEX tents are proper gems. I have a Rakoon, it is well made, feature rich and versatile. On the downside there are a couple of points (but what do you expect for an £80 tent?) Firstly is it is heavy, but Im not paying megabucks to save weight so I can cope with that. The second didnt become apparent until I was pitched on Mam Tor and went for a walk. From 100 metres away, my headtorch caught the tent - it shines like a light house adn probably explained why Id been asked to move on from a quite stealthy location on a previous camp. The guylines reflect light and there is a strip along the base of the tent that does the same. Ive actually spray painted over the white markings and replaced the guylines with 2mm black paracord - its not super neat but is way more stealthy.

I bought this tent after your review and also English woodsmans videos.. I really like the small profile of it, the height so I can sit up and the porch is perfect to stash my bag and have my dog with me but on in the same sleep area.. will be perfect for wild camping as long as the one pole system can handle some reasonable winds, not extreme obviously but some unexpected gusts will be a bonus.. thanks for the review 👍

I normally get a 2 person tent but looking to be a bit lighter and more mobile. I saw the OEX in Go Outdoors today and it looks like a nice little tent for the price.

This popped up & have subscribed...👍 Great video review & showed it off well... Having recently bought the OEX Rakoon, which is GREEN... Not Light brownish, but all Ads for the Bobcat, Rakoon, Jackal & Coyote I've seen still show them in a beige colour & not green...!😄 It also says Durable ripstop fabric, but I don't believe it is as I have a ripstop fly tent, but the Rakoon etc just have an embossed/printed patten on the fly as if to mimic ripstop fabric...? Correct me if I'm wrong...!🤔 Oh & lantern point(s), but there's only one above one door, other than that it's pretty good, but would have to use with tarp if raining, as be wet inside if doors open...
Thank you! I haven’t used it in a while to be fair. Shortly after making this vid I upgraded to an MSR Elixir. But the bobcat is a tough little tent. Had it in all weathers and it never let me down 👍
I'm going stir crazy at home so thought I'd set up my two man tent in the garden. A pole broke :( Just prior to setup I ordered a Thermarest Z sleeping mat on your recommendation, arriving Wednesday. I'm going to try and resist ordering one of these! I know what you mean about the colour, a matt finish would be better. I'm thinking Willy's Jeep olive drab would be good. Nice review 👍

Very good review mate 👍 Well described and you showed all important in your video, incl. some useful details and also your experience and feeling about the tent. I bought the same tent just @ two weeks ago and finally tested in our garden last week - used the good weather for a wee garden camping to make my daughter happy ( used this new Bobcat and my older OEX Jackall II ). My experience with the tent is similar to yours. Before bought this Bobcat I was considering the new Phoxx I, which had a bit better reviews, but I felt that it would be maybe a bit wider inside, but too low and also very small storage area without any ground sheet next to the tent so for my needs I would prefer the Bobcat where I can sit and have all my stuff in the bigger storage area kept clean and protected on the extra ground sheet there. Like you, I wanted one man tent for some solo adventures because of the less weight and better colour as my older OEX Jackal is red and weight @ 3kgs, so will use it when camping two people, but the lighter and nature more friendly Bobcat ( by the colour ), for solo wild camping. I was also happy to see the nice and more natural green colour on the web site, then a little disappointed by the difference, but still a good colour, nice green and looks fresh, just less camouflage...I'm happy with the tent, really good to sit there and be able to cook and eat comfortable, also keep my gear dry and clean, the only minus is that the sleeping area is narrow ( at least for me so this is individual and depends on everyone's body size ). Happy overall and looking forward to test in in the wilderness when we will finally use the outdoors fully ;-) All the Best and keep posting, good channel. Petr

As far as the phoxx goes, my thoughts are that it's literally just for sleeping in. Not relaxing in. And I believe the jackal is very much like the bandicoot which I have too. I've heard that some regular campsites are looking at 4 july as a date for re-opening their doors again, and therefore some wildcampers are taking that as their cue. Hi, yes it's a shame they used this images, it's so misleading. That said, I took the tent out for a wild camp last friday night (just to the woods down the road from where I live) and the tent is good. I think I'll use it a lot over the next few months. Video of it coming soon 😄👍. Atb Jonathan

The more I get into this it feels that as long as you can be discreet, and low profile most locations are do-able. I think it boils down to nerves more than anything else. Nice to meet another Herts camper 😊👍
Just ordered one of these. Probably take the outer and not the inner for day walks and cosy lunch and brew up.....lots of food cooking. Should make a decent shelter. What area are you based? Thank you! Good choice on the Bobcat. You'll get a lot out of it. I've been particularly impressed with its ability to withstand heavy rain. I'm also in Hertfordshire 👍 but I mostly explore the coast (Norfolk, Dorset). And recently started with Wales. I'm hoping to see a lot of Wales now 😊

Ive seen other vids with the Bobcat pitched in the wilds, and that colour, surprisingly, really blends very very well ???
The colour is ok after all. Once I got it out in a woodland for a wildcamp it was fine. But, very different to the colour advertised. Thanks for watching 😊👍

Great video, and I could probably say I’m definitely going to buy this tent now that I’ve seen a good, in depth and very clear review of the bobcat and the space it has! Have you managed to take it out yet?
Hi Ben, thanks for that! Yes I've taken it out loads so now I have a really good sense of what it's like. It's best feature is that it's compact and quick to set up. But it is small, that needs to be emphasised. There's no way getting around that. I'm 5'10 and it's just about ok but a bit frustrating. But everything is subjective so do have a look at it in a showroom if you can. Cheers Jonathan

Hi, I have two. The thermarest z lite, and the thermarest neoair. I use them together in the winter but the z lite is fine on its own in warmer weather 👍

Thanks! My filming rig is a Canon M50 with a Sigma 16 1.4 lens. And I just wack it on a tripod, or hand held.

@@alittlemoreoutdoor lol, well.......a couple of years ago some of my mates suggested going camping altogether with the kids. The whole experience drove me bonkers (tears, tantrums, toilets etc) but regardless, we did it all over again the following year anyway. But while shopping in Go Outdoors it occurred to me that I could do a camp solo; how amazing would that be! Then I went online and discovered that it's a thing: "solo wild camping". The rest is history! 😄👍

At first it was just a random impulse buy, which I immediately regretted. Since lockdown I've found that I'm quite the sucker for a good pop-up ad (worst purchase so far is a hand-held vegetable spiralizer). But now that I've slept in the new tent 4 or 5 times I'm actually quite excited about it.
I've heard rumours that camping will start again on 4 July - have you had any thoughts about when to start again?

Hi, thank you! As far as I know the main stockists are Go Outdoors, Blacks, and Millets. But it seems they're out of stock. If you've really got your heart set on this tarp maybe consider 2nd hand. Perhaps someone on one of the Facebook wild camping groups is selling.

O the colour on adds I loved didn't realise wasn't that quite misleading but spose not the end of the world Im torn between the phoxx 2 man or vango banshee 200 n was the oex shade of green I liked o Well il have to re decide now
At the end of the day it's very subjective, what does your heart tell you? Either way you'll have some great adventures👍
The brown color is called Khaki, I think this one is stated as green on listings.

Any idea how much the pegs weigh? 1.9kg is a bit heavy for me but, with 15 pegs, reasoned I may be able to lose a couple of 100 grams but switching to fewer and lighter pega.
On my electronic kitchen scales it's 16g per peg, and for sure I don't use all the tie out points. I think I use only 6 or 8. Good luck 👍
Would you recommend for multiday hike? Thinking of doing C2c next year but on a tight budget
Oh, having never done multi day trips I'm probably not the best person to offer advice. But what I've found is that it packs away and compresses quite small, if you keep the poles separate, and it's quick to set up. Hope that helps 👍. Thanks for watching.

What happened to the tarp mentioned??
It looks like this can be stowed away as one tent (without dismantling the inner and outer)... is that the case? if so thats a big positive if setting up in the rain or a bit of wind.
Yes it can. Definitely a positive. By the end of this vid I really liked the tent. Now I've slept in it 5 times and it's only grown on me even more - with the tarp too!
@@My24hradventure is there a specific tarp for this? We've just bought the tent, son spent two nights in the lakes in it. Thinking having a tarp would just give further summer options

Purchased this tent last night without tarp £64 waiting for it to arrive in a day or two.
Currently have a two man tent but bigger footprint and unable to sit up properly.

No, I’d say the tent vestibule is too small for much more than than boots, backpack and small bits and pieces.
