Whoever these Grand Canyon brand people are, they contracted a plant in China to make their product, so what you bought was from either the plant owner or some employees, if a design is at all popular anywhere they will after hours continue to run the plant producing the other person's product then sell them at prices way undercutting the rightful owner of the brand because they can sell it without all the overhead of marketing and shipping it to them and such, this is what happens every day in China.

Thanks Luke. I think this is another sign that the Chinese pricing cartel model is breaking down. This is just a realistic price for stock that wasn't selling at the inflated prices elsewhere. I've concluded that those online markets that look open and fully competitive really aren't. Everything that interests me was steadily climbing in cost well before Covid. Then this year I scored a Mongar 2 and Cloud Peak 2 via Amazon for half the price on Aliexpress. And the 20D versions too.

I'm a frugal car camper of many decades, and here's the thing about cheap tents: they've cut corners which often you, the tent's owner, can sometimes fix! Buying seam sealer and spending an hour or two going over 100% of the stitching goes a long way - some tents that appear to have their seams "taped" aren't really properly seam sealed. If you notice stress points that don't seem strong enough - get out needle and thread and nylon strap material and reinforce them! If the tent doesn't seem stable in the wind, identify two to four possible guylines you can add to make it more stable. I once bought a $90 three person tent whose rainfly at the side laid limp directly against the mesh of the inner tent. Five minutes with paracord and some safety pins, and I had it set up to pull the fly away from the mesh, providing fantastic ventilation. That $90 tent is now my mainstay, seven foot square so big enough for my 12" high cot (a necessity for this newly retired adventurer).

You can scrap the tent and keep the fly after you burn it. Replace the poles and make them aluminum for a floorless tent.😎👍
A couple coughlins heavy duty stakes with plastic green pole holders.
Personally don't like a completely sealed tent. Going floorless will prevent pooling if you have a leak. enable you to use a stove and trap heat more effectively.

I've a friend who is an industrial engineer in Hong Kong. If you are a big company, a chain and want to sell something like a lawnmower, but don't want to build it yourself, my friend will source the parts from China, have it assembled and then shipped to your warehouse. A few years a go, a large hardware chain hired him to put together a small push lawn mower which he did, it was done and labeled with the name of the chain and ready to ship. When the buyer came to inspect it, they found something they didn't like and canceled the order. My friend simply sold the mowers, labeled with the Ace Hardware logo, to someone else. So, 15,000 Ace Hardware mowers ended up who knows where. I'll bet something like that happened with these tents and Temu ended up with them instead of Grand Canyon.

I've bought some things from Temu, nothing for outdoors, just kitchen and personal stuff. The prices on a lot of their stuff are so low, I don't really care if it works "well" or not, and the quality can be surprisingly good.
One of my first purchases was a vacuum sealer for $15 - FIFTEEN USD!!! I figured going in that there was no way it would actually work, but it works pretty damn well. It doesn't have a lot of features, but for $15, I don't expect it to have all of the bells and whistles - just to vacuum seal a pouch. I've got a pouch I sealed when I first bought it (over a year ago now), and it's still sealed tight and no air has leaked in - I call that a success!
I'll be interested to find out how your "cheap" tent works in real life. One question you immediately brought to mind with your comment about, "It's a $50 tent, and the materials feel like a $50 tent" - if that's the case, how does the company justify charging 100 Euros for the same tent on its website?

An old friend of mine bought a junk tent with fiberglass poles several years ago. While trying to get one of the ends in the grommet the pole snapped and the recoil drove it into his forearm at the elbow and back out at his wrist on the other side of his arm. Ruined our trip, obviously, but it also ruined his arm and his construction career because even after a hell of a lot of surgeries and physical therapy he was never again able to twist his forearm or grip anything in his right hand tight enough to do anything with it. Left a really nasty scar, too.

One thing you have to realize is that in other countries, which is where Temu is stationed, just like Aliexpress, Alibaba, etc, the literal 100% same things we buy here for X amount of price, are super cheap in the rest of the world by comparison. Prices are literally jacked up in America because they know they can. It's entirely possible that either Grand Canyon is in on it, ooor, someone else is buying Grand Canyon stuff super cheap, still jacking the price up relative to their country, but at the same time, still being able to offer it to us at half what we would normally buy it for and still be able to make a profit.

I've purchased 3 camp chairs from Temu that weighted 2lbs or less and held 250lbs +. We did have a failure of one snapping when the a family member started rocking in it unadvisably. The issue with Temu, like this video, is that there is one manufacturer for a product that gets licensed under many different names. The chairs I purchased were the exact same as several different middle men-esque company names. There are some good buys there if you don't expect the highest of quality.

I have gotten a bunch of temu camping items, no tents. tarps and other camping gadgets are great and cheap. Picked up alien rings, drybags, camp storage, lights, and other items for way cheap. If your not trying to buy high end knock offs you should be good. Bonus is the money saved.

I am completely addicted to Temu. I order all kinds if items every week. I have only been disappointed twice. One time it was a knife that was very tiny. Some of the kitchen utensils are tiny too. As long as I read the fine print showing size dimensions, it's good. Live and learn. Quality is no different then Wally world, only you cut out the middle man.

I doubt you will see this. However I recently purchased a Eureka Mountain Pass 3. It’s a convertible 4th season tent that can be easily used year round. It’s price is mid ($420 for the 3 man) and I’m pretty well floored. For the price it’s giving a solid run at tents way above its price point.
I think your pack may be interesting if winter camping on a budget is something they like.

It’s possible Grand Canyon sells their tents with imperfections wholesale to minimize loss. These may be the ones that didn’t pass the quality checks. That’s why they are good quality but many imperfections. They just can use the name to void trademarking issues on exports. 😊

The crazy thing is, the wholesale cost of this tent is probably $20 or less. Temu is a Chinese company who has granted some exclusive rights to Grand Canyon in a specific region. The Chinese do this all the time. In other regions, they just sell the Grand Canyon marked product to keep from having to produce two versions. Hard to saw what GC will say, but that is the truth.

FYI ; TEMU says they have a 90 day return policy but they don't. If you wait 90 days TEMU will not except the return. The maximum allotted time to get in touch with TEMU is between 80 and 89 days and the TEMU as a company was setup to take out another online company. TEMU is a Chinese company as is ALIBABA. I can not remember the name of the online company TEMU was setup to take out though.

I have Grand Canyon Cordova, used it in Austria in Alps in a reaaaally nasty rain and wind, also in Slovenia on my way home to Croatia and I love it! I had seam seal ready in a case it's poor but all was good. I mean it was car camping and I tested it as a car tent to have on standby, not a self standing tent but really spacious, me and my dog had a lot of space! I don't like vestibule bot a single bit but as I said it's a tent to have in a car. I have cheap tarp in a car as well just to cover vestibule. All in all, 8/10, not including it was only 60€ on Amazon.

Hey Luke. You really have to be selective with items from Temu, as you can guess. Temu is a Chinese holding company, PPD, based in Boston. Their unique business model is buying directly from the manufacturers. I have actually bought items, gave them a poor rating and Temu has credited my account and instructed me to just "dispose of the item". In the middle of the garbage pile, you can stumble across a few diamonds! Lol
    Thanks for the info.

Luke, I saw this video and got the tent. It does have the same issues you described and I went ahead and seemed sealed it’s fly.
I just rewatched your evaluation again and realized I didn’t seal the tie down stitching the on the tub not being seen sealed. I’ve have used the tent for three adventures. No issues with the tent. However it didn’t rain , so I don’t know if there’s a leaking problem. The temperature at Sly Park got down to low 30’s with winds gusting to 20’s and and the tent was comfortable . I will be seen sealing the tent floor stitching for next outing. I was wondering if you had done a rain test on this tent.
    I enjoy your adventures!

I use Temu but NEVER for anything important. My D&D Dice are ok but that 2k mAh powerbank arrived broken and when I opened it to fix it, it contained a single rechargeable AA-battery. My cooking pot was OK but the glow-in-the-dark tent stake rings were useless. You get what you pay for with Temu.

Maybe Grand Canyon is selling tents that don’t pass there quality control or factory seconds.if so for a little of your own labor to seam seal the tent than maybe you have a good tent at a big saving’s. If you seam sealed the problem areas before the rain test I think we would have a better idea if it is worth buying. Might be an interesting video to show people that they can save money and get out and camp with out spending a lot of money. I love your videos. You can only use the price point as a defense for a failure to deliver once or twice. If you say it enough times you eventually justify why a piece of fecal matter is only a hundred dollars. I wouldn't buy that tent for fifty dollars. I actually did find a fifty dollar tent that has all my boxes checked for what I consider desirable features all the way down to the toggles used to tension the guylines. The floor is about the size of a queen size bed, the aluminum poles practically put themselves together, the main tent clips to the poles without having to feed poles through sleeves and there are doors on both sides with vestibules at each. The sides are very vertical so you can sit upright almost all the way to one side and the whole thing weighs around six pounds. It was fully taped but I still applied waterproofing like you always should. If you half zipped the rainfly doors you would still be protected from the average rain storm and have spectacular ventilation. There are still openable vents near the top that you can open or close without going outside. I bought another tent that still has sleeves for the poles but it's like what was left in stock of an older design which was quite high end when it was new. It's tall enough to stand up and has a vestibule you can almost stand up inside giving enough room to change clothes or put your boots on or off. It's bigger and heavier but still reasonable to take with me on my adventure bike and it only cost me sixty dollars. Growing up I had a two man pup tent that was about fifteen dollars at the time and you can still get them but they're about fourty dollars now. You always had to treat them with waterproofing and it said so in the literature but if you did, they performed surprisingly well. Some tents have to be treated before use to be fair. I think if it says so in the manual, you have to treat them before testing and if it doesn't, you don't.

Otherwise great content, keep sharing, and I'll keep watching/liking!

  • @marthagaluszka8888

My guess why the company didn't respond is 2 fold... 1. They don't want to admit they sell their tents to Temu, which then sells them at half the price. 2. The quality issues you mention ( no waterproofed seams, and slightly damaged screen) and overall cheapness of some components, means they're selling the ones that don't pass the $100+ inspection to Temu, instead of to a Job Lot or Big Lots or other off price store.
The answer is always "follow the money". Some pencil pusher found a good deal with Temu and the company still makes money which covers the manufacturing costs without warehousing the rejects.

All seams are sealed, tub floor made out of this plastic coated canvas material. Ive lived in this thing off an on for 3 years and its the best 60$ I've ever spent.
Its a 1 man bp tent, weighs close to 3 lbs and has enough room for me at 6 foot 200 lbs, my 105l keltie pack, a uswe bag i use as a day bag and a dog. Been some serious weather in this thing and its held up, ive had to re spray weather proofing once.

River Country gear is made in China, my man. If it was US made "Made in the USA" would be splattered all over their website and product descriptions and it would cost 2-3x more than it does. I'd guess either: some seller got a cheap bulk wholesale deal on a bunch of Grand Canyon tents and is selling them below their MAP price OR the Chinese company that makes GC's tents during the day ran an extra run of them some evening (maybe with cheaper materials) & TEMU is selling these counterfeit tents. I suspect the latter is where a lot of TEMU crap comes from and this is the main reason I don't buy from them.
