Hey Jordie, great video, but you might want to edit out the kid "they come from overseas" comment at 12:18. The kid is talking about foreign property investor-owners but it might look like he's talking about fair dinkum immigrants. He's a kid and you don't want something like that to stick with him for the rest of his life (as happens in the digital age). You saw what happened to Michael Daley 4.5 years ago.
Bloody hughezy! 😡 He's a 50 year old, millionaire, vegan dating a 25 year old model! He should be arrested for cultural misappropriation of bogan culture! 😆
As a lifelong Wollongong man, I feel like you missed a crucial aspect by not setting up hunting show-type motion cameras at Bellambi train station to monitor Wollongong's natural fauna of Eshays and Crackies interacting in ritualistic tribal warfare.
Lifelong Wollongong Junkie biologist here. Bellambi junkies are typically tame, shy creatures who stick to the shadows and only attack if provoked or encountered on the 24 hrs before pay day. They may shout at you, but this is a defence mechanism or they may possible want to induldge in your Parker and Simpsons. What you speak of is the Berkeley-Warrawong-Port Kembla, a much larger and fiercer junkie, the Uruk to the Orc you could say.
Fun Fact, Damo and Darren was shown to us in Uni by our very hesitant animation teacher for the sole purpose of how recognisable the station platform was as a setting
@@HOTD108_ we were talking about settings that feel like their own character and like he said in the video, lots of people say the station in Damo and Darren feels like every station and that’s what our teacher was talking about

We can't even get our own shit on time. I swear Australia is the precedent case for black market downloading being acceptable. We're always the uncool kid that couldn't watch the cool show cause we can't get Foxtel. 😭
After moving away from one of the worst places in New South Wales, Mt Druitt, i'm happy to say that my experience living near Wollongong train station and Piccadilly mall continues to enable my nostalgia, captivating my memories of drug addicts shooting up on a platform and Eshays rolling kids below their age for their Nike TN's, Wollongong is truly a lovely place.
Mum and I play a game called 'Hospital Bingo' whenever we drive past Wollongong Hospital. There's always several patients smoking out the front, and you get bonus points if they're 1) Still wearing a hospital gown 2) In a wheelchair or 3) On a drip. The holy grail is to spot a smoker with all 3 at once.
Honestly glad you did this. Feels like between the ABC and Murdoch press lately so much of Australian culture gets left out to dry, and is largely ignored by media. We've got a really distinct thing going on, but we import so much foreign media that even representing Australian life feels alien. Like yeah we've got a few shows, but the only thing that really came close is Kath and Kim, most other stuff has 9 degrees of seperation and feel more like something written by someone who doesn't live here.
Yeah Australians culture has always been about laughing at ourselves through the good and bad. There is a real special feel to it that the media seem to think unimportant, they are almost afraid of showing how beautifully messy Australia can really be
@@TheRealFallingFist That's also the thing, like I swear to god, there is more australian media on the internet, compared to australian media on australian media.

As a lifelong Wollongong local - the rough, depressed side of the city definitely exists as depicted here, but the junkies/eshays represent a very small (but highly visible) part of the Wollongong experience. Like any city there are a few areas that are best to avoid (Piccadilly/Wollongong station etc) but I’ve managed to go the better part of 4 decades without being punched, glassed or mugged. It should be noted however that I don’t use public transport so your experience may vary.
I lived in wollongong for a few years for Uni and made extensive use of public transport (the train stations are a bit scary). Gotta say the Damo and Darren sketch the most Wollongong thing I've ever seen. The lady at the end is just a bonus.
Worked at the gongs BWS for many yrs. It had such a bad reputation that getting any other employee from the surrounding suburbs to cover a shift there was impossible. The guy called "Wazza" would hold up the store every 3 years or so, just whenever he got out of prison. One day I wasn't told I was rostered on one of my days off and he held up the store with a box cutter while a fresh 18 year old girl was covering someones shift, alone. I was at the gym while it happened and got a call from my manager asking if I was okay as they assumed wazza attacked me outside of work and that's why I didn't show up or call in, I came in asap afterwards. On my very first shift, the very first customer I served as a youngin was a lanky 40 or so year old that looked like he slept in a dumptser his whole life. I couldn't help myself but laugh really hard, my senior coworker came over to ask if she could assist and they got into a screaming contest resulting in him banned for life. During peak covid we had the automatic hand sanitisers at the entrance. We had ran out of the gel sanitiser and filled it with 70% medical alcohol. One bloke kept getting it to spray out sanitiser on the pad below until it was pooling up, then lit it on fire with his lighter and ran off. When everyone was panic buying sanitiser one lady came in and asked me for our highest percentage alcohol to use as sanitiser, I said we got 60% Absithne. She bought all of our stock. One bloke came in shirtless (normal here) and stared at the spirits for 10 minutes straight (normal here). I asked if he needed any help but he said 'nah mate good ere'. He then grabbed as many as he could and just walked out. I asked him to please not walk out but he didn't stop. Atleast he said "Sorry man". After reporting it, getting the evidence and handing it to the police, he then came later than night (I didn't recognise him because he had on a shirt and sunnies) mumbled under his breath "fuck i gotta stop this" then proceeded to grabb 300 dollars worth of spirits and run out. I work at one of these stores currently in VIC. It’s good to know these kinds of customers exist interstate. We had a regular that would come in and thieve $3 bottles of wine. When they got banned, the customer started coming in wearing disguises, one was one of those shitty costume wigs from the $2 shop. We didn’t see them at first but as soon as we recognised them we told them to get out. They then proceeded to kick over all the display boxes of wine sending shit flying everywhere. We had another one who would come in and steal the most expensive bottles of champagne from the fridges. We watched the footage, and they were kissing each bottle before placing them inside their jacket. What for, not entirely sure.
Actually, have an alcoholic ex who got locked in a Dan Murphys after closing time. Whether this was an accident on their behalf or not is open to speculation.

The first psychedelic mushroom strain I ever tried was called Wollongong. They were massive - one mushroom was nearly 2 grams - and they were crazy potent. Best high of my life.
Damo and Darren was a real polariser. My mate and I loved it because we could so-relate. His wife was extremely uncomfortable watching it because “I don’t get the joke”. 😂
Finally! I've had a mate trying to convince me that the Damo and Darren video was set in some backwater melbourne station, and I've been telling them for years it's dapto. Confirmation and proff, can't wait to send this to em
This takes me back to my uni days, sticky floors and all. I was never brave enough to go to any of the train stations though - probably why I am still alive today
My favourite thing about Wollongong is just that it has a quidditch team(Wollongong Warriors), along with Thundelarra, and have a famous move called the Wollongong Shimmy.
@@esmeraldagreengate4354 Its not a real thing. Its JK writing weird stuff. Basically they started zig-zagging so no-one could hit them, just a good ole serpentine maneuver.
Ive lived in Hastings, Armidale, Kiama, Albion Park, Berry, Cairns, Canberra, Sydney and often visited Frankston. Ive studied in Nowra, UoW and UNE. As far as I can say for my experiences in Wollongong ... its not that bad, you can certainly do worse. 100% stay away from Piccadilly Centre though.
2:05 I worked security for a convention center and I often couldn’t tell the difference between the homeless and the union workers just trying to make it day by day. I didn’t want to try and kick out an actual worker since it’d obviously be saying “You look like shit, dude,” so I used a trick. I’d ask, “Hey, aren’t you with the AFN guys on the other side of the building?” If they say yes, I kick them out since AFN stands for Absolutely Fucking No one.
So that's what you were doing at dapto train station! I hope you enjoyed your brief trip into this part of the state, and I hope it didn't scare you away from coming back
Oh yeah, I went to uni down there. But I wasn't bougie enough to finish my Arts Degree, even hung out at the good games...Maybe I should have the VTMB game I'm running (set in campbeltown) take a sojourn down there.
As a Canadian from a town that used to attract inept (and disappointed) tourists who were trying to get to Australia (we have a Sydney too!), the reenactment in this video and the opening skit of 12 Foot Ninja - One Hand Killing are the 2 things that I immediately associate with Oz.
I lived here as a kid in the early 2000s so I have rose tinted glasses for the place, haven't been back since that time too. Fond memories of mum driving down Bulli Pass with Outkast Roses playing on the radio
What a pleasant video to come across! Wollongong to Sydney is what Geelong is to Melbourne. Close enough to the big smoke, big enough to have everything you need but far enough to feel completely different And that ciggy-butt brain re-enactment was classic. So good.
My perspective of Wollongong was like a western sydney suburb dropped on the coast. Its similar to Newcastle but way more Sydney like. Beautiful surrounding area with great hiking.
I stayed at the Piccadilly apartments years ago through some housing accommodation thing, I remember the view out the window over looking the eve’s and the gutters were 10000 used syringes
Absolutely your best work to date. Would not surprise me if this is like when Mel Gibson made Braveheart, the peak of your career and from here it's all awkward racism and various addictions
Amigos had a real set of golden years I reckon between 2013 and 2019. Having moved away, this whole video felt so weird. Last time I was in the Gong was literally a Jordies show at the Diggers too.
If this is a weird, dodgy, scary town, Australia is a very successful country! I live in South Africa and this looks super safe and chilled compared to a lot of places here lol. Absolutely loved the reenactment of Ciggy Butt Brain!
@@jayl5032 I love where I am here. The crime is very concentrated in specific areas and that makes the average crime rate look terrible everywhere. @@Stratocaster42 it’s all taken in good fun too, I lived in Canberra from 1995 to 2008 then to Wollongong ever since and I promise you Wollongong is waaaay more laid back and friendly.
Creepy historical fact about Wollongong is that a female cleaner was murdered in that Piccadilly shopping centre back in the 70’s-80’s. She was attacked while cleaning the place overnight & murdered. What makes it worse is the person who murdered her chopped up her body & put the pieces of her body all over the centre which they found the next day… also, they have never found the attacker… And, a creepy historical fact about Dapto is the first Station Master at the train station murdered his wife & crippled his son with an Axe in their house which is still there, the one right next to the station, that now has a family living there
There was a children's program where kids had to write their favourite things about Wollongong. Someone simply wrote "I can get to Sydney" and then scribbled an ugly butterfly in crayon.
I moved here from Sydney last year. It’s an interesting change of socio-cultural dynamics that perpetually keep my PTSD hyper-vigilance heightened. I’m here for a cheaper cost of living, being immersed nature and near the beaches.
Australia sure is fucked up politically, but being a German, every vid I've seen now with conversations with other australians they seem chill as hell. It's either a cold hearted f*ck off, with nothing afterwards or they're nice and tell you their life story. Love it.
Haha, it's neither really. As an Aussie with German background - we just realise there's a bunch of Muppets in "power" and we'd rather enjoy the food 🤪 We are pretty chill though, & probably, definitely will tell you our life story...after we take you to see the drop bears of course.

The first psychedelic mushroom strain I ever tried was called Wollongong. They were massive - one mushroom was nearly 2 grams - and they were crazy potent. Best high of my life.
I had forgotten what an absolute masterpiece Damo and Darren was.
Damo and Darren was a real polariser.
My mate and I loved it because we could so-relate.
His wife was extremely uncomfortable watching it because “I don’t get the joke”.
😂
that darren and daimo renactment genuinely warmed my heart, so much love for Micheal, hes been absolutely killing it consistently for so long.
Honestly impressed with the boys live action Damo & Darren. Put it on future tours Jordy
it was epic
Finally! I've had a mate trying to convince me that the Damo and Darren video was set in some backwater melbourne station, and I've been telling them for years it's dapto. Confirmation and proff, can't wait to send this to em
Incredible, he's like an Australian less depressed Dan Harmon.
That re-enactment was a fine piece of Australian art and should be nationally archived for all to enjoy
Did not expect to see these two roast where I live for 25 minutes but I am 1000% into it
This takes me back to my uni days, sticky floors and all. I was never brave enough to go to any of the train stations though - probably why I am still alive today
Jordan I was at your show at City Diggers and I gotta say, you handled that heckler like a pro. Thanks for coming to our little town.
“…When they come from overseas.”
Good lord, I was not expecting that 😅 (12:25)
Ah good ole Aussie racism
@@haruhisuzumiya6650 We’ve only got a couple of hundred years of history and most of it can be summed up as drinking and racism. Onya Australia.

For those who don't know, jordies is the old man in the opening episodes of koala man, great show!!!
He was also Chippy the Tradie & a bunch of randos.
Oooooooh now this video makes sense.
That show is creepy.
Hes also in the snuff film at the end of one of the eps too *spoilers*
My favourite thing about Wollongong is just that it has a quidditch team(Wollongong Warriors), along with Thundelarra, and have a famous move called the Wollongong Shimmy.
I grew up in Wollongong and have never heard of the Wollongong shuffle. What is it?
@@esmeraldagreengate4354 Its not a real thing. Its JK writing weird stuff. Basically they started zig-zagging so no-one could hit them, just a good ole serpentine maneuver.

Wollongong gives me flashbacks of my home town Bega. Beautiful countryside, but filled with depressing locals and the occasional stabbing...
21:00 hands down your best work to date.
CCTV footage of that re-enactment would have been fucken classic.
Great one! Michael seems like a damn genuine bloke. LOVE the live action re-enactment. I'd watch the show.
Still got my poster from the Parkway Drive myspace secret show at the youthie in 2007. Thanks for coming down lads.
Your Darren sounds an awful lot like your Hughesy impression. Pretty spot on.
The average Aussie pub has more screens than NASA mission control
Well yeah. And?
So that's what you were doing at dapto train station! I hope you enjoyed your brief trip into this part of the state, and I hope it didn't scare you away from coming back
i live in wollongong and seeing the re-enactment of damo and darren at the original spot made me incredibly happy
I live in the Gong and gotta say, Dicey sums up how the Gong is
Oh yeah, I went to uni down there. But I wasn't bougie enough to finish my Arts Degree, even hung out at the good games...Maybe I should have the VTMB game I'm running (set in campbeltown) take a sojourn down there.
Was not ready for Jordies' "Damo" outfit! 😂
He slips back into male modelling just like Michael slips back into making sandwiches
As a Canadian from a town that used to attract inept (and disappointed) tourists who were trying to get to Australia (we have a Sydney too!), the reenactment in this video and the opening skit of 12 Foot Ninja - One Hand Killing are the 2 things that I immediately associate with Oz.
This is the best episode yet. Gong represent. Its wild seeing you just walking down crown street and having a bev at diceys.
So sad to see that Michael's shows didn't kick off and he's back to working at a Subway. 😢
JORDIES! Jordan Shanks! This has gone on long enough! You MUST get a Warhammer 40k tattoo! You promised at 1 million subs! I demand it!
I've been waiting a decade for this moment
Oh shit I just realised that too!
As someone who's just getting into 40k I can imagine some badass tattoos and I probably don't know the most bad ass stuff yet
I lived here as a kid in the early 2000s so I have rose tinted glasses for the place, haven't been back since that time too. Fond memories of mum driving down Bulli Pass with Outkast Roses playing on the radio
Michael just being a chef how could you not absolutely love this
I think you'll find they are called sandwich arrrrrrteeeests
Chef is a hell of a stretch
Unanderra Station is my local. we're all excited it finally has a lift.
As an American, the Ciggy Butt Brain bit at the end somehow makes absolutely no sense at all, but also perfect sense.
That's kinda exactly how we all communicate to each other. It doesn't really make sense, but we all understand each other implicitly.
@@Tt-qm2xg Australian is an interpretive language
We think the same when we see videos of people from Alabama or Texas.
Omg so random. I worked with Todor at Luna Park in Melbourne so many years ago in the Circus Of Screams. Small world.
What a pleasant video to come across!
Wollongong to Sydney is what Geelong is to Melbourne. Close enough to the big smoke, big enough to have everything you need but far enough to feel completely different
And that ciggy-butt brain re-enactment was classic. So good.
Yea, but you are a Victorian, weird crazy people. The Gong or Wong isn't quite as crazy or strange as anything from Victoria.

Dapto station looks exactly like Nunnawadding station did before the make over.
I saw this earlier and liked it and then the deeper I got into the video it was like yep I can see it lmao
Mel Gibson? How about Mark Latham? It was all down hill after "ease the squeeze".

Amigos had a real set of golden years I reckon between 2013 and 2019. Having moved away, this whole video felt so weird. Last time I was in the Gong was literally a Jordies show at the Diggers too.
Packed a fair bit of advertising into that one! nice
If this is a weird, dodgy, scary town, Australia is a very successful country! I live in South Africa and this looks super safe and chilled compared to a lot of places here lol. Absolutely loved the reenactment of Ciggy Butt Brain!

Creepy historical fact about Wollongong is that a female cleaner was murdered in that Piccadilly shopping centre back in the 70’s-80’s. She was attacked while cleaning the place overnight & murdered.
What makes it worse is the person who murdered her chopped up her body & put the pieces of her body all over the centre which they found the next day… also, they have never found the attacker…
And, a creepy historical fact about Dapto is the first Station Master at the train station murdered his wife & crippled his son with an Axe in their house which is still there, the one right next to the station, that now has a family living there
There was a children's program where kids had to write their favourite things about Wollongong. Someone simply wrote "I can get to Sydney" and then scribbled an ugly butterfly in crayon.
"Trees _in_ the air?"
Absolutely killed me
Gotta support the trees mate.
Up a street light's a bit different but she does the job
You don't know how much I love Damo and Darren 😍

I moved here from Sydney last year.
It’s an interesting change of socio-cultural dynamics that perpetually keep my PTSD hyper-vigilance heightened.
I’m here for a cheaper cost of living, being immersed nature and near the beaches.
I would imagine making a wrong turn not taking 40 minutes of your life away would be a plus too.
I’m Wollongong and this is classic, was non stop laughter the whole time. I grew up in Derra back in the early 90’s.
