Leo Fender incorrectly called it a tremolo and most people have ever since called it that, but it really is a vibrato. Tremolo is a rhythmic oscillation of volume while a vibrato (a.k.a. whammy bar) oscillates the pitch. So it's basically a mechanical and arguably more controlled way of achieving the same thing you do when you bend a note using your finger.

It would have fit the mise-en-scene perfectly aswell, given uplift hope and fun before his defiant end. Perfect. 🍷😏🔥
Master of Puppets is... also very thematically relevant, as it is revealed Vecna has been pulling the strings all along, and how Eddie playing the song backdrops cuts to all of our characters facing the Upside Down in their own way. Plus it just hits harder from the get, Run to the Hills is a classic in its own right but the more interesting guitar parts take too long to get to for Eddie and Dustin to run away from the bats, and finally if you take note of the dates in the show, Master of Puppets would only have been out for less than a month in the universe of the show which makes it even more powerful and impressive on Eddie's part!

It was great to hear such an iconic song played in stranger things. To be fair the music throughout has been great, maybe its just because i grew up in the 80's hearing so much of it, I don't know. i love rock and metal through and through but other genres can transport you back to a time or place even if it isn't your preferred type of music. They have been spot on with the music choices I think. Oh and what are the chances that strat was built in 1975?? 😁

😶me too(...don't tell anyone though🙃🧟♀️🤫). (Is it wrong to be rather glad of randomly finding this delightful chap&channel? It seems I am definitely not alone on this either! 🙌🕺🎶)
That type of chord inversion is incredibly useful. It works perfectly for making standard "root as lowest note" power chords huge by mirroring the fifth down one octave, or by going full-on Blackmore doublestops a la Smoke On The Water or even better my favourite, "All Night Long" (that also has no rhyming lyrics which is super cool). Doublestops are equal parts power and death. Deather? Powerdeath?
All (most) of your vids are funny, but this was absolute gold. Bringing the subtleties of power chords to a new generation, or not. It's called a 'Trembelow' bar, in my house. As the folks underneath really don't know when it's going to happen. You're welcome.
No disrespect to Rick Beato, but he hasn't taught me anything about epic pick slides and death chords. Well done Justin. By the way, I was the guy wearing a The Darkness pedal board t-shirt when you played in Minneapolis this past spring (you know, your gig right after Winnipeg Canada). ☺☺☺
I love Justin so much for how he views things like this positively while others fuss and gatekeep. PLEASE let the masses understand just how sick my favorite music is. The artists deserve it!
Hi Justin, love your channel, always fun to watch. Here's one for your Q&A: what's the history of that beat up Strat you got there? Did you modify it or did Fender actually put Humbuckers into their guitars at some stage?
Given that the fictional town featured in Stranger Things shares your name, I think you should give it a go. I'm not much into horror and monsters, but the music, the kids, and the whole 80s vibe is really great.
Justin, thank you for the great content! I haven't watched ALL of your previous vids yet, but have you done an exploration in King's X yet? So heavy, so melodic, so drop D before most people I think... would love to hear your thoughts... Keep up the good work! Thanks man!
Funny enough that "death" chord I don't think is used in Master of Puppets, but is used in Song 2 that you did a breakdown of not too long ago. Enjoying the channel either way. Nice one Justin.
When you’re working on a solo, how much are you thinking about the technical aspects of how the notes relate, and how much is pure instinct as to what sounds awesome?
5:06 Justin, I'm pretty sure that's exactly how Hetfield does it (in the live clips where I've been able to see his hands, it looks like he's way up at fret 12). Makes some sense to cling to the E string when playing something so fast. Great video!
Holy shit, hearing Justin play the One Vision riff just suddenly made me realize where the inspiration for the I Believe in a Thing Called Love riff came from. How have I never noticed that?!?!
That’s a great example of two things sounding very similar yet feeling very different. People throw around quotes about how “great artists steal”, but the catch is that great artists also infuse their creations with new and exciting energy. Very different from the current trend of lazy auto-tuned scribbling over an entire backing track from a classic song. It’s one of the things that make Hawkins and The Darkness great - they really are carrying a tradition forward, not just exploiting it like others do.
@@RDB93 They are, actually. Where you may be missing that is not picking out the right parts of the songs to line up for comparison. Once you do, it’s clear.
Yes! Cool Showman(?)! Just a suggestion for a show sometime in the future. While you were jamming, the thought popped in my wee brain, 'I'd really enjoy a (stage) rig run down'. I've always suspected that it's the Les Paul (Supreme?) and a bunch of Marshalls on 11. Is there more to it? Love your sound!
Hey Justin, Would love to see you do a colab with Rick Beato for "What makes this song great" The band- The Darkness- The song " I believe in a thing called love". That would be awesome.
That is a absolutely beautiful strat. 2 humbuckers and a gargle lever sure what more could any guitar picker want, I will be referring to tremolo arms as gargle levers from now on.

@@ClinicalDecisionYikesYT or maybe it's because he can't play it all downstrokes.
Loving these videos. Really interesting insights. Have you done a video talking about your guitars? If you’re into that sort of thing?
I’ve done that on my Patreon!
Master was the first album I ever bought….I love Metallica…I’ve played guitar for 16 years but never learned the riff…and Justin Hawkins just taught me a way to play the riff…randomly…bless this man
This channel made me exited playing guitar again. Thanx!
Thanks Johnny! That's great!
Deather? Powerdeath?
I didn’t expect to hear France Gall mentioned in a video about Metallica and Stranger Things. As ever, your references are brilliant.
Nah get your wretched general population away from my death metal
Really, really liked your electrified episode. Crackin...........😎😎😎
Hilarious and educational. You should give guitar lessons . Great video!
Justin, thank you for the great content! I haven't watched ALL of your previous vids yet, but have you done an exploration in King's X yet? So heavy, so melodic, so drop D before most people I think... would love to hear your thoughts... Keep up the good work! Thanks man!
Thanks John!
Hit every nail on every head. Nothing but genius.
This channel is my new favourite thing on youtube. Fun fact: Justin Hawkins.... Hawkins is the name of the town in the series! spooky right!
Funny enough that "death" chord I don't think is used in Master of Puppets, but is used in Song 2 that you did a breakdown of not too long ago. Enjoying the channel either way. Nice one Justin.
Hey hey an electric opening!!! Hell yeah!! Great job!! Question- Do you have a large collection of guitars or just a few favorites?
They’re literally nothing alike 😂
@@RDB93 They are, actually. Where you may be missing that is not picking out the right parts of the songs to line up for comparison. Once you do, it’s clear.
@@kevgamble Different key, different chords, different strumming pattern.
LITERALLY nothing alike.
Hey Justin,
Would love to see you do a colab with Rick Beato for "What makes this song great" The band- The Darkness- The song " I believe in a thing called love".
That would be awesome.
I love those "death chords", I've been throwing them into all kinds of songs they don't belong in for years!
That is a absolutely beautiful strat. 2 humbuckers and a gargle lever sure what more could any guitar picker want, I will be referring to tremolo arms as gargle levers from now on.
I can imagine, after watching the show James was saying “ why didn’t we do this for the videos?”
Fantastic intro today 🤘
Awesome. I asked if you would play your intro on electric and you did. Thanks ! 🥰
Absolutely delightful.
Good day to you it is IIIIIIIIEEEEEEWWWWAAHYYYYWOOOOOIIIIEYEEEEE!!!
I don’t know why exactly but I love Justin Hawkins approachable brilliance. I’ve just watched 10 of these and just got lost in it. Incredibly approachable but yet so next level.
Love, love, love the electric theme song…
I'm here for the Justin Hawkins Lab puns. Also, kudos to all the guitarists who can down pick this whole song, including James and Kirk both pushing 60. I must have deficiency of fast twitch muscles lol that shit is hard.
I've always called the "death" chord a "Weezer" chord, simply because that's where I first heard/copied it from.
i played the death chord for the first 20 years of my guitar playing because i couldn't not hit or mute the low string.
@@cosmikrelic4815 Hahaha, that's fair enough, I spent a super long time using my thumb to fret the low e in a weird half-assed cowboy/power chord hybrid.
Well yeah Weezer is a death metal band afterall.
This was one of your best, loved it!
I love the channel and never miss a show. All I can say about thus episode is.......... Fuck yes Justin, fuck yes.
Would love to see the electric more.
Your guitar playing is on point my brother... As always.
Just stumbled across your channel and I gotta say that is one nice looking strat!
Not forgetting that Stranger Things also introduced a whole bunch of people to Kate Bush!!! Amazing what a tv show can do. I have never seen an episode. Maybe I should!! Loving the fact that the "old Stratocaster" has a very non factory whacking great big Humbucker on it. Strats do not usually sound like that. Made me shiver with pleasure!! Brilliant stuff :-)
Cool fact. Joseph Quinn, the actor with the guitar in this scene, played all but the solo himself.
What a lovely channel. Justin you bring me many laughs
