I hadn't really paid much attention to them outside of the hits and Ghost (the song on Slash's first solo record which Ian Astbury guested on) but I recently saw them open for Alice Cooper in Glasgow and my GOD they were good. Ian has such a cool stage presence, mannerisms very like Jay from Rival Sons and I was blown away. They definitely gained a fan!

Here in Hobart. My local supermarket is called Hill Street. It’s in Hill Street. It’s a good supermarket. Great fresh food and good ethical place. They play music. Often Tasmanian artists I think. I was in there this week and found myself tapping along to a song semi-consciously. It turned out to be I Believe in a Thing Called Love. I ignored that song when it came out because too many dickheads were listening to it. Turns out to be more than a big catchy chorus - and in fact a riff monster of a song. Folks in the supermarket were unaware how blissful they were feeling all grins and rock n roll for their shop. Nice one.

You have just highlighted something that I always thought was ‘wrong’ on Van Halen records when you talk about driving in USA v UK!
Eddie is always in the passenger’s speaker in the early VH records when in the UK and I’ve always thought it was strange and why didn’t they put Eddie in the drivers ear, but of course, they did! They have left hand drive cars so Eddie being the car fan he was, definitely thought to put his guitar through the left speaker! Bit of a duh, 🤦‍♂️ moment now I realise it!..

You mentioned Ilan Rubin from Nine Inch Nails. I would highly recommend checking out his work with Angels & Airwaves (with Tom Delonge from Blink). Their most recent album Lifeforms has some really interesting choices musically.

As a life-long super nerd of Queen (and Bowie, Prince, and music in general), "Hot Space" is one of my favorite albums...
I'll never forget bringing it home the day it dropped, and putting the needle on the record... It's a sonic adventure from a band at the top of their game. ; )

I have just listened to Permission to Land and I thought it was superb. It's taken me twenty years but I got there, I just dismissed it as 'file under comedy' back in the day but I was wrong, sorry Justin. I would put this in with Danzig1, The Cult 'Electric' and few others I can't remember.
You should have got Rick Rubin in but great album anyways 👍😎

A kinda follow up to the first question in this vid...
During The Darkness' commercial peak there was something of a perception that you were a novelty band, amplified no doubt by your voice, aesthetic and the general sense of fun around the music. Was this something that your label etc actively tried to market you as or was it more the result of media trying to pigeonhole you?
It seemed that by releasing a christmas song you were playing into and cashing in on the whole novelty image, do you think that impacted the sales of your sophomore album?
    XxX

Your observation about which part of the mix you hear more based on where you are driving was brills! LMFAO. It's true though.

Met you guys in Camden many years ago and still feel bad at how annoying I was(one too many alcohols)

Justin were there any bands you wished you had seen but regretted not going?
For me it was Queen. In my myopic sense of rock I had the chance in Germany on the Hot Space Tour but skipped it . An absolute life regret.
I wished I’d seen U2 in Hamburg on the Unforgettable Fire Tour but Germany is a strange beast for buying concert tickets and I missed out.
For me in England when I came back my first gig was The Cult at Brixton Academy With Gaye Bikers On Acid, Zodiac Mindwarp , in 85. Sweaty belter of a gig.
My love for The Cult knows no bounds.
