  • I TURN A 5-WOOD INTO A MONSTER! Can You Turn Your 5-Wood into a 3-Wood? its lovely to hit 300 yard long drives down the fairway and impress your mates, theres no feeling like smashing long drives... but sometimes you gotta tone it down, you have to hit more fairways. is this the best way to hit more fairways off the tee for low handicap golfers, mid handicap golfers and even high handicap golfers... in this video I take a Callaway epic flash 5-wood and use its adjustability to change it into a more powerful longer 3-wood... will this work? do adjustable golf clubs make any difference at all? or is it just a sales gimmick? potentially this could be a new club in my golf bag if things go well! lets find out... and lets do It now!

I play the epic flash 5 wood lofted down to 17 degrees. I was using the 3 wood lofted up to 17 degrees, which was good off the t, but harder to hit off the deck because of its bigger head size and longer shaft. I was also kind conscious about the added spin from lofting up as opposed to down. Im a high handicapper and love the 5 wood lofted to 17 degrees. Its more like a 4 wood. I like the slightly lower flight than the 18 degrees, and added roll out. I will adjust to 18 degrees depending on weather conditions and course

I know it's an old post James but I just picked up the flash 5 and 7. The 5 came with a 3 wood length shaft. I'm trying it tomorrow at 17 and 18 and against my three wood then decide whether to cut it down and where it fits. Love the 7. Your old content is still helping us retired or financially challenged golfers find quality players gear at a fair price.
    Cheers
Also love the next 100 and looking forward to more

Bought an old Sonartec ladies flex LS 99 17 degree 3 wood, put on new +1/8 inch grip. The shaft is 41.75 inches in length about the same as most 5 woods. As a slow swinging senior with a 12 GHIN, this experiment has worked well for me. I have never been able to consistently hit a conventional 3 wood, this club is very consistent and long enough for my game.

I purchased this club after watching this review. The first round I used it, I only hit it as my second shot on par 5's. Hit it long and straight!!! Was hitting the driver poorly so just started using this as my driver the rest of the round. I was hitting it over 240 every time and finished well. Decided I would order the 3+ version and dial it down to 12.5 degrees and use as my driver!!!👍 Thanks James!!!

I have this exact 5 wood and have also lofted it down one degree. A cool 235 fly for me and quite consistent. Absolutely love the setup for when I need to hit a fairway

I like the idea of a “fairway finder swing”
I have found that if I dial the speed back just a touch my golf is way better than just going out and trying to smash every shot as hard as I can! Great video James!

I play Taylormade M2 (2017) 3 and 5 woods... both High Launch. More consistent and straight. What’s nice about the 21* 5 wood is I took the hybrid out of the bag and it’s perfect with my 5I. My driver is set to 11* so 17* 3 wood fits better. Plus my shafts are progressively weighted. Driver is 55g, 3 wood 65g and 5 wood 75g. 5-6 Irons are 95g; 7-GW are 105g. SW, LW are 113g. UST graphite for woods. Nippon NS Pro for the Irons/wedges

Man your videos are gold. So after 15 years of not playing, I’m back! I never liked my 5 wood because it was 10 yards more than my 3 iron at 210 yards and difficult to hit off the turf. Club design, mainly shape, has improved so much. That Callaway 5 wood is a beast!!!

I just picked up this 5 wood to fill a spot in the bag. I was looking for a sub Zero, but found this at a great price. Thanks for a lot of great info for a fellow tinkerer. I'm looking forward to getting out and swinging it.

Ping G410 5 wood, lofted up to 18 degrees most of the time. Got a 3 wood length shaft in it through so between changing the loft up / down and gripping down I can get it from 180 sky high or 240 flatter. One of my favourite clubs and the adjustability and options it gave me was the key to the purchase!

I bought a 5W (PING G400, 17.5 standard loft) as I was having MAJOR issues hitting a fairway wood. Tuned it to 16.5 to get it traveling further and to get that shorter shaft helping to hit a little better. It has me swinging confidently and I’m now ready to get a 3W, tune the 5 to 18 or 18.5, and get my old 19 degree 3 hybrid out of the bag.

Did this earlier this spring. With my Fly-z 5 wood set to 17 degrees there was little perceived benefit to keeping the 3-wood in the bag. I replaced the 3-wood with a Cleveland RTX 3 58 degree wedge to expand my options at the other end of the bag. This has worked out very nicely!

I'm a low launch/low spin fairway wood player. Have a TS2 at 15.75 at 1* flat. Seems to work pretty well. Have an old Callaway 5W that I hit more often off the deck as it goes 210 and my 3W only goes 225-235 max and I can hit moonballs (for me) with it. Use the 3W most often for bombing off the tee on short Par 4's.

Hey all! First time commenting on this channel. Love the content James, keep it up! I still play my Cobra SZ fairway woods 2003, steel stiff flex - 3+ 13*, 5 18*, 7 21*. 5 wood is my go to off the tee for short par 4s & 2nd shot on par 5s. Have bought many since, hit them well, keep going back. Just started playing again after 10 years, thanks to you, Rick Shiels, Peter Finch, Liam Harrison OMP & The Dick from Golf Vlogs Uk! Cheers

That’s another point. As a gamer I’ve been more of a range rat than a player. I’ve always had trouble bringing my range swing to the course and make it work. Your fairway finder swing is gonna become part of my swing thought. My coach told me the same thing. Dial the speed down. My “your swing “ not the other guys. Thanks again!!

I literally just went thru this. Was trying an Epic 3 wood. Ball was coming out quite low. The fitter suggested I go a 5 wood delofted to 17*, but in a 3 wood length shaft. Gave me more confidence seeing more of the face without losing distance. I’m trying out a few more but am leaning this way.

I have actually done the opposite. My three wood is at 14.5 and purchased this year but I have cranked my old three wood from 14 up to 17 and use it as a 5 wood now. Love tinkering but these have stayed like that since I first did it!!

Got fitted for this wood too, but we totally tinkered around with it. We put a shorter 7 wood shaft in, since couldn’t get through it with the 5 wood shaft. We then lofted it down to 17. My friends call it ‘The Beast’!

Titleist Ts2 16.5 set at c1 ,opened up and lofted down to I think 15.75 with even flow white 6.5 shaft ,use this off the tee quite a bit .No 5 wood but an old Wilson 21 degree Deep red 7 wood with a Voodoo xvr7 5 wood shaft in it ,this is my rescue type club ( I don't like normal rescue clubs , I'm no good with them ) then in to 4 iron .This combo is nice gapping in the high end .

I play my G410 LST 3-wood that I loft up to 16 degrees. For me seeing a little more face helps with confidence. The distance between 16 degrees and 14.5 degrees is minimal. I love the way the club performs and it's a bomber.

I picked up a 17* Tour Edge 3 Wood (standard loft is 17* and 3 Wood shaft length ). Liked it so much I got a 45 gram Grafaloy Blue (Higher Launch) shaft for my TS2 3 Wood and cranked the loft up as high as I can with that club, 16.5*. I like that setup as well, but the Tour Edge feels softer. Much better ball flight with both clubs than a standard 15* 3 Wood, and at age 60, only looking for 190-200 yards from it.

  • @aaronhughes1169

I use a Cobra 5 wood that’s cranked down to 17.5 degrees. It’s my only fairway wood after driver. It’s my fairway finder for tight par 4s and second shots on long par 5s. I’m a beginner so it’s easier for me to get carry out of this club than my old 3 wood at 15 degrees. Plus the shaft is shorter so it’s easier for me to hit the sweet spot.

I use a 16° 3-wood and a 19° 5-wood in various iterations for about 10 years. The combination seems to work best for me and especially my 5-wood (I often use it on par fives). I have found this setup works well for me insofar as distance consistency, trajectory, and reliability in a variety of situations. Keep in mind that I've tried all sorts of combinations of fairway woods for the last 50 or so years that I've playing the game and at various times I used a 3-wood and 2 iron or even a 1 iron but I can't muster the kinds of club head speed to make that kind of set up work in my 70s. I'm playing simple golf now.

I just brought in my 5 wood. It’s a cobra composite. At least 15 years old. I abandoned my 3 and 4 iron and added a 21 degree hybrid and brought back the 5 wood. I’ve lost distance with my driver, only hitting 270’s now, so needed that extra distance to score on the par 5’s

    Hi James,
Great vid. Can you adjust your current 3 wood and adjust this 5 wood, to be the same loft, so we can see the difference in distance between the two, which would mostly be the length of club difference.
Personally I up my 3w to be a 4 wood after watching a pro do a comparison video between 3/4/5 woods. Last few years I used a Big Bertha Alpha 815 14 degree, with a +2 setting to have a little more consistency. Just got an epic flash 3w, 15 degree, set to +1 and liking it so far.

I am one of those flat (baseball) swingers that adjusts up my 5-wood and get the distances down consistency I need. Which is an odd bag set up that fits my gaps (Driver 250-265, 5-wood 225-235, 3-hybrid 210-220, 5 iron - 60*)

I have 3 Titleist 913 Fairways, 13.5* Strong 3 wood (2 wood or mini driver if you like), 17* 4 wood and 21* 7 wood (a bit more of a spread than typical 3, 5, 7 at 15*, 19*, 21*). All have Aldila RipA 70 3 wood shafts but +1/2" length on the 3, original length on the 4, and -1/2" length on the 7. All set on factory A1, never been touched. They work well.

I'm playing a 2nd gen M2 5 wood instead of a 3 wood. When I bought it, I replaced my RBZ 3 wood with it. Since doing so, my game has definitely improved. I'm able to hit it well off a tee and off the fairway. I'm even able to hit it out of the rough with confidence. I think a lot of golfers would benefit from the shorter shaft and little more loft as it's much easier to hit consistently.

I use a Ping G400 5 wood lofted down to 16.5*. I am really confident from the deck, off the tee, and in the light rough. I only hit it about 225 yards but it is my go to club when I need to hit a shot over a pond the needs to cover 220 yards. I feel like it goes high but doesn’t balloon. That gives me confidence. Great club! Plus it opens for a 4th wedge in the bottom of the bag. Which is more important to me as most of my tee shots leave me 130 yards in. Which leads to better scores for me. Anybody else do it this way? Love all your video content!!

I have rogue strong 3 wood, 13.5, that I bought to replace an epic 3 wood. I decided to experiment with the epic and lofted it up to a 16 degree. Only about a 10 yard difference in distance but the flight is completely different. I use the rogue for a lower flight with more run and the epic higher flight to hit par 5 greens with very little run.

I have been using a similar set up recently, a Cobra F9 5 wood set at 17 degrees loft. I needed an increase in club head speed , so I added a 44 inch fairway shaft . I probably choke down 1/2 inch or so. It feels a bit heavier, but that encourages a more rhythmic swing and better strike, with 10 m longer carry.

I play a 5 wood. Callaway Great Big Bertha. Looks like a very similar club as the Epic. I play it down to 17 degrees so it's more like a 3 wood. Never tinker with it. But may now haha.

I use a 917 5 wood and have it set at 19.5 which leaves a 15-20 yard gap between my 4 iron and my 3 wood. I love the 5 wood because of how easy it is to hit of the deck it’s become my go to when I can’t reach the green but want a wedge in. Also very accurate off the tee for me.

First.... I love your videos and always watch and like them. Huge fan of yours mate.
I would consider myself a decent golfer as i play off a + handicap and would maybe consider you to talk about the face a little when suggesting followers to add/remove loft. Believe it or not, not a lot of people understand how much the face opens when you de-loft the club and closes when you add loft. As much as 2 degrees for every degree of loft. That can make a massive negative impact for say someone who struggle with the right side of fairway/rough (right handed golfer) and decides they want to take loft away thinking it will go further, reduce spin (spin is your friend) and go straighter. Just my 2 cents pal. Keep up the great work and videos, one of the best out there!!!

This one was a good one James. Never thought about tinkering with my woods. Usually just the driver. Makes a lot of since 👍

In winter I play 1/3/5W at standard lofts and sacrifice a wedge, in summer I loft the 5W down, ditch the 3W and put the extra wedge back in

I hava a callaway gbb alpha 5wood that is lofted down to 17 and the shaft is bit shorter. Super easy to hit, way easier off the deck than 3wood. Also i like the little bit smaller and shallower head size. I dont even carry a 3wood anymore.

I must be getting old. Cleveland driver at 12 degrees, then Cleveland 5 & 7 woods. I just find they give me the right height and a reasonable carry. I don't hit them far, but normally straight.

I play a 5 wood at 18.5 degrees and it's one of my most favorite clubs in my bag. It's my go-to if I need to hit a fairway.

  • @philhazel4810
    @philhazel4810 5 ปีที่แล้ว

Depends on your gapping. I guess you hit the low lofted version better because, correct me if I'm wrong, lofting up usually closes the face slightly, lofting down opens slightly. A slight open face was easier for you to control and caused you to make better contact, raising you ball speed. Sometimes it's good to tinker.

I was struggling with my 3 wood so I went for a fitting to maybe try a different brand but instead I was fitted into a Ping G410 5 wood and lofted it down. The slightly shorter shaft has helped a lot. Lost a few yards but at least I can use it more confidently now

I have a 5 wood at 17* and a 7 wood at 21* . Nice thing is I tend to draw fairway woods so by setting them at their lowest settings it opens up the face a bit. If I set my 3 wood at 16* it closes down the face a bit promoting a hook.

Of note - A 5w lofted down to 17 should have less spin than a 3w lofted up to 17. Changing the lofts changes the strike location, the 5w strike will be higher on the face while lofting up the 3w will move the strike lower on the face.

I use a 2 hybrid and 3 hybrid and find the 2 hybrid has the distance of a 4W, is more forgiving and more versatile. Would love to see you do a video comparing hybrids and fairway woods of similar lofts. I am betting the hybrid only loses about 10-15 yards to the same loft, and that would be mostly due to shaft length being shorter by about 1”. With same length, would be slightly less different.

I have a 3 wood lofted to 13.5 degrees, off the tee its around 285-290. I dont carry a driver. for my "3 wood" distance I use the GAPR LO. It goes around 250-265.

James, compare the loft down 5w with your 3w. That should be interesting and meaningful. Thks for all your honest opinions.

I just watched this again and love what you did tinkering with the lofts using the shorter shafted 5W...I think I'll try this out as well. Like your brother, I don't hit the 3W consistently good off the deck, but I'm smashing my 5W, which is an older Callaway Razr Fit...guess it's time for an upgrade!!

I use my Wilson Deep Red 5 wood. Can’t adjust it but at 18 degrees it’s a fairway finder for me. ......... I do ‘tinker’ with my driver & 3 wood.

Food for thought. I could get a 5 wood and loft down to a 3 and take the driving iron out and when I wanted the iron back in I could loft back up to a 5 wood.

Put the 3 wood shaft in the 5 wood lofted down and see if the consistancy is still there . THAT would be a test !

Interesting one this. I recently gap tested my old 15 degrees 3-wood against my 19-degree 5-wood and found there was little difference, except I cannot hit 3-wood off the fairway if my life depended on it. Traded them both in for a TM M2 5-wood set at 18 degrees. Works for me. I can hit it off tee and fairway. Also makes room for an extra club. Most golfers with an average-slow swing speed (imho) would be better off using a 5-wood instead of a 3-wood.

I don't use a driver too and I have replaced my Titliest 915 13.5 with the 917 and replaced the 4 wood with a 917 5. wood. Its a great combination and the 5 wood is just great of the deck. All standard loft, I've stopped tinkering nowadays!!!

My fairway woods are not adjustable. 3W is 16°, 5W is 19°, and 7W is 22°. They blend into my single length irons. Manufactured by One Iron Golf. (Driver is 12°).
