    I may be wrong but having just purchased a Maverik 3 wood with 15 degrees of loft I believe the 5 wood you are using may have18 degrees of loft. Always look forward to watching your videos always helpful and informative.

    I got rid of my 3 wood and added a 5 wood, best decision I ever made. Now, I have both a 5 wood and 3 hybrid which some might say is a waste of space because the yardages are almost the same but I love it. My 5 wood is great off the tee and fairway. The 3 hybrid is going about the same distance but it launches great out of the rough. Basically I use my 5 wood when I have a clean lie and my 3 hybrid is the rough “get out of jail” card. Also, my 5 wood is great for high launch but if I need to keep the ball down for a punch or out of the wind I grab the 3 hybrid.

      I have taken my 14 degree three wood and adjusted it up by two degrees so it effectively bridges half way to a 5 wood. Then a hybrid around 20 degrees and 5 iron and 4 wedges. Hybrid from the rough and downwind.

    Matt, Love your videos. Had this dilemma a while back. A friend and I were playing the same 5Ws. He bought a new set and gave me his 5W. I love the profile of my 5W and struggled with the hybrid setup. So, I decided to cut down the other 5W to hybrid length and weight it to suit my specs with a bit of lead tape. I have been loving it ever since. My buddy calls it the "frankenwood". I wouldn't leave home without it. Keep up the good work.

      Buying a hybrid because "everyone else loves them" was the worst decision I ever made. Replacing it wit a 7 wood was the best decision. I agree, it's much easier to hit, and it is great to hit at greens. I love when I have 170 to the green.

      @@kirkmichael5468 Just goes to show that we are all different. Using ShotScope data from 2023, I just compared my average distance to my "performance" distance (i.e. average of shots excluding horrible ones). A club that I hit inconsistently would have an average well under the performance distance as there would be a lot of horrible shots. For me, at the top it is Driver 88%, 7W 87%, 9i 86%, and 3W 85%. At the bottom is it 21 Hybrid 76%, 5i 79%, 3i 82%.
      Another stat, % of time hitting the green from 150-175 yards, at the top is 7W at 28%, 5 iron 27%, 3W 20%, 5W 19%, 3 iron 13%, and 21 Hybrid at 12%. So, I hit the green over twice as often with the 7W compared to the hybrid.

    I carry a 5 wood for the consistent 215-225 I get but it can be tough to hit for me when the grass is thick. My 3 hybrid is good for 200 and I can hit it out of the rough much better and it just feels safer when I’m squeezing a few extra yards out of it. Plus when I punch out of trees I use the hybrid again. I carry 4 wedges as well but no 4 iron in my bag.

  • @snookman9920
    @snookman9920 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I have gone with Driver, 4W and Hybrid. I can hit the 4W consistently and accurately off the tee when needed, as well as off the deck. If you think about it, for most amateur players par 5s are three shot holes so the loss in not carrying a 3W is made up with extra wedges. Something to think about and try. The money ball of gapping your set.

      100% bigger and heavier than an iron so doesn't get caught/twisted by the rough. Smaller than a wood so easier to get a more downward attack angle and get it in and out of the rough. Love it for that!

    Great video. Thank you. I’m a 48 year old male, currently with a handicap of 6 ( it blew out due to Covid and courses being closed in Australia). Recently, I’ve changed clubs as an update and to swap out my 4 and 5 irons with 4 and 5 Hybrids.
    Have driver, 3 and 5 wood. The 5 wood is used for me in slightly different areas than the Hybrids. The main area is when the ball is basically in the middle of the fairway, the Hybrids when off. Much easier to hit consistently than a 4 or 5 iron. As they are different clubs.

  • @stevenl.halesr.6894
    @stevenl.halesr.6894 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I use them both! Of course, that depends on the course(s) you play, and the Tees you play from.
    My bag contains a Driver (10.5*), 3W (15*), 5W (18*), 3H (20*), 4H (23*), 5-I (27*), 6-I (31*), 7-I (35*), 8-I (39*), 9-I (43*), PW (48*), AW (50*), SW (58* - Tommy Armour Over and Out Dual Purpose), and putter.
    My Fairway Clubs (3W and 5W) are my primary clubs for the par 5's. My Hybrids come in handy for narrower fairways, and when a long or driving iron is a better choice of club to use. Plus, they are easier for me to hit in certain rough and fairway sand situations.
    IMHO, the three wedges I have are more than enough for me...I'm NOT Phil Mickelson, so hitting flop shots are NOT my game...I use my 8 Iron (LOST ART), almost as much as I use my Approach Wedge...That depends on my lie and if I need to go over an obstacle or not.
    It's NOT for everyone, but that's how I play my game! I've even taken out my AW on occasions and have used a Chipper...And TRUST me, they come in pretty handy in certain situations!!!

    5 woods seem to be making a comeback. What's really ironic is i recently replaced my hybrids for Srixon driving irons. I love those clubs; they have so much distance and miss hits still give you a tight dispersion with the gearing affect being minimized. I am considering replacing my 3 wood with a 5. I just have not hit it well the last few years.

    I'm a high handicapper that are on the way to break 90. I needed to fill the gap between my driver and my utility club I never use. I went to a fitting, I tried a Taylor Made Sim 2 #3 hybrid and a 7w Srixon. The 7w was very consistent and my bad shots were totally acceptable misses. The hybrid did not give me any confidence and a lot of tops for some reason. I completed the top of my bag with a Srixon FZ85 5w. It goes like a rocket. I also use the 5w to get out of tough lies or punch out under trees. Great video!

    @lindseybalser3009 ปีที่แล้ว

    I just put back in my bag an old 5w.
    I love it. High soft landers from 240/250.
    I play D,3w,5w,4h,5i….
    I also ditched my 4 iron for a 4H for high density rough, punch shots, low rollers and when I don’t care the yardage after it lands.
    Love both of them even though the 4h can roll out to the same yardage as the 5w or even more.
    My 5i is my 210-220 club, so there is a gap, but if I choke down on the 5w with a smooth swing it is easier to play and stop a ball on 230-240 than I ever was with my 4i and 3i.

    Good choice MRSG, I love the 5 wood for high and low shots and I use it instead of my 3 wood when down wind, plus the fact that you can choke up on it to add 3 more distance changes with a nice soft landing ability. I would dump my 3 wood except for the fact that I use the penetrating flight of it for narrow holes when I must find the fairway and let it run. PS - I've already removed my 3 & 4 irons, as I've gone with a 4 & 5 hybrids in their place, because they are much better out of the rough.

    The 5 wood has 18* loft.
    I usually find two big differences between hybrid and fairway wood if loft is the same. Fwy usually has a little longer shaft so it generates a bit more clubhead speed. It's capable of higher ball speeds, but can be a bit harder to strike consistently. Fwy also has a bigger head with a lower and deeper COG, so the launch is higher and the ball lands softer onto a green.
    I found I had better launch conditions and accuracy with the Hybrid. I play in the midwest with a fair bit of wind, so the more penetrating hybrid flight was the winner for me.

It truly splits the difference between these two options. 18º of loft, same as a 5-wood, but a large head that feels more fairway-wood like and suits my eye nicely at address. Launches high (as you would expect from the name), very easy to hit, and doesn't have the extreme hook miss that I get with most hybrids. The larger size of the head is just very stable. Not as long as 5-wood due to the shorter shaft, but more accurate.

That's a big jump from whatever club you are have slotted in your bag before the hybrid or 5 wood. Also, how fast does the ball stop when it lands on the green?

    The lower my handicap the more I am preferring metal woods to hybrids. It is not that the hybrid is bad, it is just more versatile to have a 5 wood imo. If I try to crank a hyrid it is pretty much a big draw/hook, where as a 5w I can fade or draw. Also, I used to punch out with my 3H, now I actually use a 3W and it is amazing, gif it a try, super low shot that runs for miles. I am actually thinking of getting a driving iron and ditching the 3W now though.

    If you need a 220 to 250 yard club, the 5 wood makes sense for you.
    I don’t play as long, so chose a 3 hybrid for my 195 club, as my 4 iron is 185. I play middle tees, so rarely play beyond 195 on par 3 holes. My driver and 3 wood are for par 4 and 5 distances beyond 200 yards.

    mid 6 handi, 5 wood only good if you can strike it properly. I have a 21* hybrid up adjusted to 23* to replace my 4 iron and hit it high and straight. Just ordered a 18* hybrid to replace my 5 wood as my miss with the 5 wood was all over the place, no confidence with it at all which is weird because I have a 4 wood that I hit just fine. I just feel like hybrids are easier to "get under the ball" with...perhaps the shorter length promotes more of an iron swing so it's easier to hit down as opposed to the longer wood.

    Great input there Matt.
    I have an adjustable 4 hybrid Taylormade M1 and a good old Nickent 3f/w which is like a lower lofted 7 wood basically. The 4 replaced my 3 hybrid and 4 iron as I can get the same distances as both from one club with softer landings, anywhere from 200 to 220 if I need it! The Nickent goes 225 to 240 for me depending on shot type and is very workable. This all allowed an extra wdge in the bag.

    I use a 5 wood over a 3 wood just because it’s so hard to get a 3 wood off the ground and I hit my 5 wood 200yds off the deck which is more then enough for an extension club.
    What I do use that different though is my 14th club is a 7 hybrid. There are two shots it fantastic for 150 yd green attacks the ball goes so high it just drops like a meteor. And over the tree shots, again the ball launch angle is like 60 degrees makes getting over trees almost effortless. The last consideration is the head weight makes ideal for heavy rough more so then an a iron but that probably varies by brand.

    About 10 or so years ago a was rocking a 7 wood and I absolutely LOVED it. However now these hybrid clubs are coming into play more and more. I have a 3 and 4 Iron which I can def hit however the percentage is not as great as say a 5 wood off the fairway. However I do like hitting the 3 Iron off the tee.
    I have a 3 wood too that I hit well off the tee when the driver is not doing so well but I'm considering a 5w to potentially replace the 3i just to have a little best of both worlds. I can hit the 5w off the tee and or off the fairway and maybe be more consistent with the 5w.

    I have a 4/5H in my set now, as well as a 3w/5w. I use all of them frequently, but after adding several wedges, I'm up to 14 clubs. When I get new irons, they'll probably come with a 43 degree PW (I currently have a CBX Zipcore 46 degree), as well as a 5 Iron. I agree that having the versatility in the wedges and shorter Irons is super important, but in this case, something will have to go. Ultimately what I plan on going with is a D/5w/7w/5i or 5H /6/7/8/9/PW/46/52/56/60/P. Hybrids are almost like cheating.

    I think hybrids are a better fit for “most” beginner/non-progressed players. And Woods are better for the upper level intermediate to advanced players. Just my opinion. I think you can pull off a wider variety of shots with Woods once your swing is highly consistent and you understand the principles of working the ball into different flight paths.

    I used a 3 hybrid (18*) for a couple of years. Hit it 200 yards (up to 210) but the miss was a big ugly hook and playing out of heavy rough often caused it to shut down. Recently put a 5-wood in the bag (also 18*). I'm finding it easier to hit, goes higher and a bit farther, my base line shot is about 210. There's no big miss yet and it's better out of the rough and better from dodgy lies than my 3-wood.

    Actually I keep a 4h and a 7w in the bag. No 4i, because I feel I don't have enough club speed for it. It screwed down both by 1.5° to adapt to my gapping. So I have the ability to play out of the rough yet get my 2nd shot far enough for my wedge and the 7w from good lies to directly aim for the green. That really works well, they're the Ping G425 max, very forgiving and performing.

    I've removed my 3W from the bag and now play a 5W (19°) and 4H (22°) instead. I can hit the 5W WAY easier than the 3W and it's more accurate off the tee. And if accuracy isn't the goal, then it's just going to be driver. My 3W was having a bit of an identity crisis and I'm not really sure what its point is (at least at my current skill level).
