  • Should You Use a Hybrid? Or a 5-Wood? one of the big questions in golf now is which golf club should you use? which golf clubs should you buy? should you use a hybrid? should you use a 5-wood? should you use a driver? which golf clubs should mid handicap golfers use? what about high handicap golfers? and which are the best clubs for beginners? in this video I put a hybrid against a 5-wood hybrid vs 5-wood to see exactly what the difference is? I use a Callaway epic flash hybrid and a callaway epic flash fairway wood... which should I use? which should you use? lets find out... and lets do It now!

Great I catch myself saying “let’s do it and let’s do it now” all the time!
I can’t hit lower than 20 lofted hybrids far at all. So I carry the 5 wood you convinced me to buy from your other video. That thing is a MONSTER and my new favorite club.

I have an ancient TM R5 7 wood and love it out of the rough or on the fairway. Flies high and lands very soft.

I went to a 19 degree hybrid several years ago and was happy with the resluts. Have seen similar videos recently comparing the hybrid to the 5 wood and decided to put the 5 wood back in the bag. Pleased with the change. It feels easier to hit, especially when I need just a bit more distance. With the hybrid, when I try to jump on it a bit I tend to hook, not so with the 5 wood.

Great video again James and enjoyed the head to head, I’m trying a driving iron on Tuesday but I won’t rule out the hybrid, I’ve struggled with hybrids in the past but that is probably because I have never been fitted for one. I’m looking forward to seeing what I end up with

I carry both a 5 wood and 3 hybrid. I usually switch depending on the course. On long par 3's I prefer the 5 wood. On long approach shots it's the 3 hybrid.

Great videos! I'm a new subscriber and have been binging a whole lot of content lately. I've been completely rebuilding my entire bag and your reviews have been amazing help. I would love to see a video of you breaking down your own swing. From address to follow through. It's clear you have a great swing but there are a few things you do that I'd love to know more about. For example the angle of your back swing.. Or how your wrists move forward a bit before your back swing on chip shots. I'm just a person that finds it interesting how and why a person developed the swing that they have. Because let's face it, many swings are similar but none are exactly the same. Anyway great job and keep knocking out the quality content.

Great review James! Would have really enjoyed if you took those two out on the course and actually try them out of the rough.
Anyways I agree that it‘s much easier to hit a Hybrid out of the rough. Glides much better.
The thing is that the courses I play at the greens are in good shape, but really soft. Therefore it doesn’t really make a difference whether spin and descend angle is a little lower and flatter with the hybrid. I would think this is the case for most golf courses. The places the likes of Rory plays at, greens are just superfirm. That‘s why they play 5 woods to get that extra spin and higher apex. Also worth mentioning here is that pros that carry 5 woods often switch it in favor of a utility irons once they play links, softer greens or wind is a bigger factor. Most amateur golfers don‘t do that.
Therefore I still believe to the very most golfers hybrids are by far the best fit. And while many argue that pros don‘t use hybrids I can only partially agree to that.
If you look at the pros on Tours with lower club head speeds you will figure, that a lot of them are actually playing hybrids. Matt Kuchar, Webb Simpson to mention two of them. Only maybe 3-4% of male golfers have faster swing speeds compared to them.
anyways. Can‘t be too wrong using hybrids then...

Love my 5 wood, it’s a great fairway finder for me and is a great option of the fairway or even the rough. I have a 3 wood as well but don’t hit it as high so it’s great of the tee or trying to run one up to a green that’s 240 out

Hybrid is the happy medium for me between a driving iron and 5wood. Hits the right height window and and goes the right distance as well is much more consistent than the other two options. First year having one in the bag and I love it. Use it all over the course and confident everytime it comes out of the bag.

I replaced the 5 wood this year with a 19 degree hybrid. The 5 wood would turn into a very high weak slice sometimes. I took the 4 and 5 iron out the bag as well and added a 22 degree H4 and a 25 degree H5. They are so easy to hit.

I recently got rid of my 3 and 4 hybrids. I replaced them with a 5 wood and a 7 wood. The main reason is because I would get an errant shot from my hybrids when I really wasn't expecting it. After getting the 5 and 7 woods those errant shots just don't happen. I did get the Callaway Flash 5 and 7 wood. And I did have Callaway Steelhead hybrids. The extra distance from the 5 and 7 wood is welcomed as well. Where I play there isn't a lot of thick ruff. A hybrid is better than other clubs out of thick ruff.

I play the Rogue 3 wood and hybrid and absolutely love them... Don't get to use them a ton but love them regardless... This was a very interesting video as I used to have a 5 wood in my bag but decided to work in another wedge for gapping and the 5 wood wasn't even getting used... That said I never put much thought into the difference between the 5 wood and 3 hybrid... My hybrid is so easy for me to hit I couldn't imagine using a 5 wood instead. I've considered going to hybrids for the 4 and 5 irons as well as I hit my hybrid so well... Great video James!

Have to admit that I gave up on both 3 woods & 5 woods years ago as the longer shafts (42" - 43") just seemed too cumbersome for me. I am currently playing an Epic Flash 3H set at 17* loft and an Epic Flash 4H set at 20* loft (both are 41" long), before transitioning into my 4 iron at 22*. loft. The 3H is my 3-wood replacement for second shots into par 5's, and although I sacrifice some distance, I'm usually in the fairway. My 4H is my 3-iron replacement and is used for long par 3's (200'ish yards). Thanks for the informative videos - I enjoy them a lot!

This is a question I've been asking myself lately. I play a 5-wood (~215 yd club), and I love it... but not out of the rough. My 4 iron is also not reliable from thick grass. So, if I mishit my tee shot on a long par 4 or par 5, I normally have to lay up w a 6 or 7 Iron. Not ideal. I may have to consider replacing the 4 iron (~205 yd club), with a Hybrid, but I don't think it'll replace the 5-wood. Love the content James and appreciate all the work I'm sure it takes to put out daily videos.

Had a gapping issue from 3 wood to 3 iron never got on with a 5 wood so tried a hybrid this week and was amazed how easy they are to hit fron tee and the deck. Went in to buy the epic flash but ended up striking the g410 much better with more confidence. Came away with 17* and also 19* adjusted up to 20* to replace my 3 iron. • @ww-oo7ic
    @ww-oo7ic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Great comparison. I think the only thing missing was comparing the descent angle. Tour pros use the 5 wood because the height and and descent allows them to access and hold areas of firm greens. Also, gapping has to come into play. sometimes the hybrid is just too low and doesn't spin enough and doesn't separate enough particularly if someone also uses a 4 hybrid. Would love to see you hit your longest iron and 3 wood first then fill in one of the two.

I’m just old enough to have played competitive golf before there were hybrids. I loved them at the time and have gone back to it from time to time ever since.
That said, there is no question that from a standpoint of versatility and possibly even forgiveness, the hybrid is hard to beat!
I’ve had at least one hybrid in my bag for years ....and at times more.
Currently, I have one hybrid in my bag, a Titleist 818h2 in 19* which is sandwiched between my 3wd and my 4i T-MB.
It would hard for me to give up the ability to muscle out a hybrid from deep rough or, for that matter, a bad lie for the sake of a 5wd.

Great Video, it's a question that i've struggled with for this last year.
Started with a 3 wood, 17 & 22 deg hyb hitting them really well at the start of the season, then went for a lesson to improve my iron striking and after practising the new movements couldn't hit the hybrids at all.
Therefore switched in a 5 wood which seemed to work but only for a couple of rounds. Now I cant hit that and have went back to the two hybrids.
With this in mind I have kept all the clubs in the bag and before my rounds now I hit a few shots to see how i'm feeling and which set up to take for the course i'm playing. If its thick rough I use the two hybrids, if its thinnish rough and more links I use the 5 wood as I can use it of the tees on the shorter par 4 to get a lot more roll than my hybrid as I hit a lower ball flight with the wood.

I use both, and also have a driving iron. Epic flash 5wood, sub 70 4 hybrid, sub 70 5 hybrid, sub 70 3 utility iron. Plus a 5 iron. Took out my 60 as I have a low bounce 56 that can be opened up for extra space at the top of my bag. I've found having more ball flight options from 200-240 had really helped lower my scores and gives me way more confidence on long par 3s and reachable in two par 5s.

I have the 3h and 5h, also, which are also excellent, but I had that 4h specially shafted, while the other 2 have manufacturer shafts. Instead of buying a new hybrid, I'm going to sell my most recent hybrids and buy new shafts for the 3h and 5h Xhots. It's crazy, right? But these clubs inspire confidence. The ball flies off the face (imo), the ball flight is great, and I can work the ball both ways.

I carry a driver 3and 5 wood and a 4 hybrid then my irons start at the 5 they all serve a purpose n find the hybrid better from the rough and the 5wood for tees and fairways but it wouldnt do us all to be the same would it

I must be old school I have the matching Epic flash Driver, 3 wood and 5 wood. I love them personally my 3 wood is my go to if I’m struggling with the driver. I’m interested to possibly adding a hybrid instead of my long iron.

Good video James I used to use a rescue but struggled out the rough so I now use a ping 400 crossover 3iron which I hit a lot better out of rough and fairway still struggle to hit it off a tee strangely enough

Play a F8 3 & 5 woods, which are so easy to hit; have great feel, complimenting my F9 driver. Have tried various hybrids over the years, but I got better results from the fairways, accuracy included...

Love hitting the 3H from the fairway on long par 4s or for 2nd shots on par 5s. For me it’s just more consistent than a 5W.

Recently purchased a G410 5 wood (currently set at 16.5). Goes about the same as my Mizuno 19 degree hybrid. Even the good shots with the 5 wood....just don't seem to travel as far.....and it should. I also have another Mizuno hybrid set at 15 degrees. I get more distance with the lower hybrid than with the 5 wood. My plan is if the ball is rolling out at all....go with the hybrid. Winter time I'll probably drop the low hybrid and hit the 5 wood more when the ground softens up.

I'm 1 of those Dummy's that uses 3 hybrid & a #5 Wood, as i seen approx 15 yards difference, which works for my game !
After see ur video, i'm thinking of trimming my 5 wood shaft to 3 hybrid length + 1" & then Swing Weight it to D-3, & hack-on

I have the Callaway Epic collection the 3 and 5 wood I also just recently purchased the 5 hybrid I enjoy hitting the hybrid more than the wood for sure honestly I can’t get rid of my 3 wood but I can do without the 5 wood now. The club has an extra gear it just fly’s off the club. Nice review

I have binned the driver as I didn't know what result I would get from one hole to the next. I picked up a 16 deg Cobra hybrid off ebay some months ago and what a difference it has made to my all round game. I generally hit it 230 off the tee or off the fairway and more importantly I rarely miss a fairway.

I think the 5 wood versus hybrid is less of a question than replacing long irons with the hybrids. I used to love my long irons but as I have got older I have swapped out my 3, 4 and 5 irons for hybrids and get much more consistent results. I swapped out my 5 wood for a gap wedge.

Awesome video. I currently use a 3 wood and a hybrid. I would consider a 5 wood if I hit it as well as my 3 wood. Haven’t tried one yet but should. Maybe today.

I have recently taking a new approach. I have used a driver, 3 wood, 5 wood and 3,4 and 5 hybrid. I am a 12 handicap and am 65 years old. Switching to Driver, 13.5 degree 3 wood, 16 degree 4 wood, 3 hybrid at 18 degrees, 4, 5, hybrid. Closing the gap between clubs and allowing me to play longer holes better. If it continues, I will be happier and lowering my handicap.

Just replaced my old 5 wood with a hybrid. I’m a little worried just started hitting the 5 wood well as an alternative to my driver, but I needed some more versatility out of the rough. Hopefully I can drive consistently with it

I play a ping g410 2 hybrid set at 17 degrees and hit it more accurately than my fairway woods. And since my average drive is 320 total distance I can get buy with no fairway woods and a extra wedge. Its helped me tremendously

I have both, ‘07-ish burner 4-hybrid, and an equivalent year cobra 5 wood 19 degree. Hit both very well so haven’t replaced them. Can’t hit my 4 iron at all so took it out of the bag in favor of another wedge. Looking to replace my driver this week, going for a fitting to see what works best

Enjoyed the video!! What do you think of a bag layout of Driver 10.5 M6 (lofted to 11.5) 3 wood fixed at 15, 5 wood fixed at 19, hybrid that’s adjustable but at 21 currently. I hit the 5w about 200y and the 4h about 180y. 5i is longest iron in bag. Have a PW in 43, GW at 48, SW at 54, LW at 60. I’d appreciate the help and insight. Trying to set up bag for the season!!

Hey James, I came upon the video on fairway vs hybrid. Also a much younger and a bit leaner Mr Robinson. This would be a good topic with the current clubs like Callaway Rouge, Taylormade Stealth, or even the Cobra Radspeed or LTDx.

My hybrid is lofted a little higher to put it between a 4 &5 iron. I found it easier to hit than the 4 iron so it replaced that. The 3 & 5 wood are still in the bag...but I honestly barely use the 5 wood.

I have a cobra composite 5 wood. It’s 15 years old. I still hit it 235 and it stops on a dime. I love that club. I have a Titleist 910 21 degree hybrid (between a 3 and 4 iron), I hit it 225 and love it. I put the 3 and 4 iron away.

I'm a 11 and carry an Epic Flash Driver, Epic Flash 5 Wood and a Callaway X2 Hot 5 Wood then into my Mizuno irons, starting at the 4 iron (love Mizuno Irons). I actually hit the EF 5W 25 yds farther than my X2 5W. Tried to hit myself into the EF 3W on a simulator, but could not hit the EF 3W as far as the EF 5W? My bag is kind of all over the place with 4 wedges (all different brands).
Thanks for the video, looks like I can do without a Hybrid for a little bit longer.

Results about where I thought they would be. I pulled my 3 wood a while back, I sill have a 5 wood in the bag.
I have recently gotten a full set of hybrids. I am finding I can hit 1 with the driver and 1 with the hybrid, and I am usually making stroke 3 with a wedge.

Yeah, I have 3W, 5W G400 I got as a set with my 1W G400 this spring for Father’s Day. Got an 4H Epic flash. Liked it enough to get 3H Epic Flash, but was using to replace 3-4 irons from my older set. Now I got a full NEW set 3irons-PW, so now with my wedges 52, 56 and 60 I plan to play irons 3-PW irons. Will need to decide if I want to swap out a wood with a hybrid or just stay the course with woods. Think woods at start since I have played them well and hybrids were originally just to replace long irons I want to now play with my new set. Eh, at least I have a lot of options now. 😂
