Back in the mid 1960s, Chuck Norris trained under Hidetaka Nishiyama (Shotokan), Tsutomu Oshima (Shotokan) and Fumio Demura (Shito-ryu) among other martial arts greats. They helped improved his hand techniques and how to blend them with his kicks to become more well rounded. Today training with people from other systems is common, but back then it wasn't.
Everybody has his own personal style of Shotokan or whatever. (I do Shotokan). It depends on one's body type, flexibility, etc. In oi zuki , one of our senior instructors likes to start the movement of his fist as the trailing foot is sliding past the lead foot, plus he pushes off with the trailing foot in the very beginning. Though he isn't the Sensei, he can be extremely destructive in a fight with little effort. As a matter of fact, he along with our Sensei, trained under Okazaki himself at 45th St. Phila.
I am a 4th-degree black belt in Shotokan, 5 years in Shito Ryu (Kofukan). New Zealand National Gold and New Zealand Open Silver medalist. The truth is the 'style' does not matter. It's all about the instructor. There is good karate dojo and bad karate dojo regardless of style. The way you pick the club is to go look at the students. Good sensei have good students. For example, If you like to compete, jump online to sports data or similar and see which club wins most of the medals.
@@FightEquipt Thanks a million. I was in need to know about this as I will start my class very soon. Now I have got the point. Thanks for your kind reply. Wish you all the best.💝💝💝
Hey guys! I like your video and your thougts that we all can learn from each other wich is really cool. Im a first degree black belt in Kofukan Shitoryu and i have some pointers if thats ok. Plus i practiced shotokan very briefly in my youth and they have a lot in common. The info i would like to pass on is the following: 1) Your stance , its VERY wide and open and very Shotokan i presume :D Turn your body forward into shomen, with your bellybutton pointing forward. This puts your hips in a good starting position without any unnecessery movments when your going forward. 2) Your rear foot when you land in the execution position. Both feet has to be grounded when you land the technique to give you the most balance and power with the body behind the punch. 3) Kaeshi (Shuto uke) - Is both offensive and defensive technique. When you use it as an attack, use the ridge of your hand to strike. It can be used as an backup attack in case your first technique fails or reinforcement of the first. And more of a stopping or pushing technique if you use it more as defensive block. 4) Combination 5: Its not a slide backwards, its a change in stance from moto-dachi to neko ashi dachi, from a standing to a sitting position, more known as cast stance. Hope my pointers are ok and that you keep practicing Shitoryu as long as you like and keep upp the good work with spreading the good word that we all can learn each other! Ouz! Sincerly // Cristian
misconceptions of shito ryu . everyone has their own way. gung fu. DO. in Karate-DO of shito ryu the dachis will be used in all styles in various situations. and kakushi waza..
Punch in a straight line, not elbows out. Hips and shoulders should be in a straight line, power comes from speed and movement forward not from the hips. Many Regards Danny - 1DAN Shito-Ryu Kofukan
Thanks Dan. Elbows out is my bad habit. Shotokan ask for the same. In my old Shotokan training all movements are driven from hips so it's my old habit from previous training. I am enjoying learning all Shito ryu kihon and combos very much.
Yes. I am not into competition too much and I do a lot of hook punches on the bags which is why my kihon is slightly out and shows when I am not consciously correcting it. Original kata have NO mawashi geri. I asked Abe sensei, the former chief JKA technical instructor and he said it was because there was NO mawashi geri in karate originally. Today we learnt how much more mawashi geri is compared to yoko, ushiro and mae geri. Hook punches, upper cuts are are still missing in our kihon. Look at MMA and UFC, you cannot fight properly without them. It's useful to learn them all.
@@FightEquipt I've been training in motobu ha kuniba Kai shito ryu for only a month but my question is what is so great about the style?I don't dislike it but I think that shukokai which I originally started had better punches.Maybe I'm missing something.

Wow, thank you so much.
I appreciate how you realize we can all learn from each other regardless of style. OSU!
Yes, there are so much we can learn from others if we keep an open mind. I am loving all the Shito Ryu training at the moment.
I am about to test for my brown belt and I can't wait to spend he rest of my life teaching and studying Shito-Ryu Karate! Osu!
I got to click like for what you said.

Exactly, that why it's an art. Thanks for your comment.
The Kai-Shi is basically the center line concept apllied
Thank you Al.
Keishi is an attack it is not a block or a push.
It is part of the whole giakutsuki motion of shitoryu.
This type training is already in the SKIF Shotokan of Sensei Hirokazu Kanazawa, from their beginnings.
We will miss him dearly. My shodan certificate was signed by Shihan Kanazawa.
Someone to help me please. I am a beginner of karate. Which one should I select for an awesome fighting??...Shito-Ryu or Shotokan?

Thank you . Things you said are similar to Shihan Tomiyama said to me when he came over. Osu
This."Kaishi" is it the same as teisho in shotokan??
I believe the Kaishi is more for defense purpose after the strike. Teisho is often used for attack.
Hello I love the vids I do shito ryu My katas are sechien
Thanks. I like Sechien.
