The shotokan karate is the most diferent Style from the original Okinawa te, Ginshin Funakoshi change It a lot, while mabuni just try to make shito ryu more "stylist" from the original Okinawa te (sorry for my english)

This is such a great idea. Many moons ago our Shotokan dojo had the opportunity to practice with Goju Kai karate members and we learned a lot about how & why they move in certain ways. As also mentioned here, the Goju Kai has moves that could also be used as blocks, strikes and releases from grips. After training we went out together to dinner & discuss karate over food & refreshments. That lesson was more than 40 years ago and I often think back to it when considering Bunkai etc.
I see that in Shito Ryu, the starting stance in Pinan Nidan is front facing cat stance (Shomen Neko Ashi dachi), while in Shotokan, it is back stance (Kokutsu dachi). I practice Wado Ryu and we do Mahanmi Neko Ashi dachi. We also share the same name with Shito Ryu with the kata name.
The name of Heian kata in okinawan karate is Piñan. The shorin ryu karate was the base of shotokan karate, because great master Gichin Funakoshi learned shorin ryu karate. Shito ryu karate is a mixed invention of great master Mabuni kenwa since goju ryu and shorin ryu
Thank you for the video. To avoid any discussion it should be good to precise which organization (Hayashi-ha Shito-Ryu, ShotoKan JKA, Shotokan SKI, Mabuni-ha Shito-Ryu). For sure, this is not ShitoKai (Mabuni-ha) which is the standard one
Nice video, Shito Ryu looks veeery strong! I'd noticed it in Gakuji's videos, and when he said that they use blocks as attacks too, that showed up even more. Yūsuke-sensei, I know that katas are a bit long, but if you could upload videos of the full performances before the break downs, that'd be cool, since not all of us are karatekas
In the Shito Ryu organization I'd been in, we've never shortened the stances for the punches. I'm in the 90/10 camp for cat stances. I see it as a solid conditioning stance.
Some comments from me about this Heian/Pinan: 1. All Pinan starts with cat stance including this. In Shotokan, all other Heian starts with kokutsu dachi except Heian Shodan. Do you know the reason? The reason could be related with 2nd comment: 2. All kata, or at least all Heian starts with defensive moves. This is where katas apply "No first attack in karate". Since originally it was kenshi uchi / uke, Gichin Funakoshi sensei changed it to Gedan Barai, a more apparent move where it is a block rather than an attack (even thoughin kenshi uchi it is block first then strike). If yoave time, read 2 books: Shotokan Myths and Shotokan Misteries by Kousaku Yokota sensei. Really eye opening views from him.
Over your knee will over time affect your knee as The pressure is placed on The knee cartilege and as you age it wears out fatter than If rebuilds. 45 years of a mix of shito and goju
Length of Zenkutsu in Shitoryu is 2×shoulder length and knee presset forward so that you can not see the toes if you look down with your eyeys (not dropping the head). In this demo it seems like the Shitoryu guy is doing it too lobg and deep, but Shitoryu is known for high stances. As for weight distribution in the old days we were taught 70-30. But for kumite and practical karate it is wrong and also according to the teachings of Motobu Choki and now adays we teach a 50-50 distribution for over 20 years now.
My first martial art was Shito Ryu up until my instructor closed his Dojo down and moved away. I later did Shotokan, but for only a year and a half. I love that you're comparing the two.
There are no Heian kata in Shitoryu. They are called Pinnan. So thi kata is pinnan Shodan. Funakoshi changed the original name into Heian and the order of first and second katas of pinnan into second and first in Heian.
In Wado-ryu we start Pinan Nidan similarly to Shito-ryu. We start with a Tetsui uke and not a Gedan Barai. Our hand hammer movement is bigger then Shito-ryu, but ends in more or less the same place. But ours is coming from around the hight of the jaw and then striking diagonally down and a little bit out. But our cat stance is more similar to a Shotokan stance. Our back knee is facing outward. Weight maybe 85% on the back leg. The stance is quite deep (though not close to as deep as a modern shotokan stance) and our upper body is more turned to the side than Shito Ryu style.
My sensei told us long time ago if you training kata, you can improve your skill of kumite in the same time, but if you training kumite only, you cannot improve your kata skill.. i am 1st dan of black belt shotokan but i've stop after tournament SKIF at Australia 2012.
I don't agree with this. I would kumite above everything. Ultimately that is what we want - practicing kata just means you learn a few moves in sequence.
I am the Texas Shito-Ryu guy! Shito-Ryu appears tighter in form and more centered with a stronger core.. Shotokan appears looser and longer like Tang Soo Do.
I was not able to watch the complete video, seems youtube was having a aneurism or something I did see some of the video and have question. in Heian 1 the 4th. move I have always learned as a hammer fist, not a UKE like inside forearm block. I am a JKA member as well 日本 空手 協会. In other words a hammer fist rather than a block, thanks for any input.
North Americans right, more physical. But I actually changed, against my Shidoshi, I think He might like, I took initiative to learn, he knows I'm a trapped , need a walk, I'll be back. Hopefully he won't want me to teach. lol. I'm Brown.

These cross over series are awesome!!!! The analysis and the side by side comparison is very clear to understand
Thanks so much for your compliment!
You can see the Okinawa root in Shito ryu a lot more.
The shotokan karate is the most diferent Style from the original Okinawa te, Ginshin Funakoshi change It a lot, while mabuni just try to make shito ryu more "stylist" from the original Okinawa te (sorry for my english)
Didnt it all come from okinowa so how can 1 be more than other???
And Shorin two have roots of shuri te Shorin and shito ryu shuri te Pidan shodan nidan Sandan yondan godan etc..
I love both of your martial arts. The reason I stop due to my financial situation. I used to practice both GoJu Ryu and Shotokan.
Thank you for checking it out!

Very fascinating, I believe the contemporary kyokushin kata would be Pinan Sono Ich - I love seeing these differences and the development.
Kyokushin is fighting karate all the others are defence karate in my opinion

I was a Shito Ryu practitioner for a good three years 18 years ago. Damn this really brings back sweet memories.
Nice to see you two sense(先生), The world is strange from this year, Hope everybody will be safe and peaceful. From Republic of Korea.
Yeah hopefully I can travel to your country and enjoy the amazing food soon
Yusuke this video has a huge kata knowledge for me i loved this can't wait for tomorrow
Such detail!! This is awesome.
I much prefer more videos like this so you can see the difference in related Katas in different styles

Yeah that's true! Wado comparison will be interesting too...

I also noticed the difference in hand position and shoulder difference
That's true too!
Very interesting video!
Les mouvements du Shito Ryu sont fluides et efficaces. Le Neko Ashi Dashi est parfait.
In shito Ryu we have longer stances for blocks and lil bit shorter for punches.
Nice video, Shito Ryu looks veeery strong! I'd noticed it in Gakuji's videos, and when he said that they use blocks as attacks too, that showed up even more.

Both performances are top notch
As far as the neko dachi.... circumstance dictates weight distribution.
Hai
Good explanation
I always found Shito Ryu more attractive to the eyes if you know what I mean, not to disrespect the other style just my humble opinion.
Excelente! 👍👍👍
3:45 As the saying goes: A block is a lock, is a blow, is a throw :)
I just saw, the second flow, Shito a more aggressive style. Both turned to block, then a fist ready for shito.
Over your knee will over time affect your knee as The pressure is placed on The knee cartilege and as you age it wears out fatter than If rebuilds. 45 years of a mix of shito and goju
I learn Shotokan Karate for 2 year now I am learning shitoriyu
In Canada it's 50/50, like a sideways horse stance.
Good call, I didn't see that, Shoto more open, Shito closer to Uechi ryu style.
My beginning Kata is more Shito, but Fist a little higher. Up to almost shoulder.

I have personally learned that as a hammer fist strike
Tetsui uchi right? Im from WSKF
One is a defensive offensive. Other more Offensive movement.
Actually that is true, I blocked a punch and hit the underarm, ++ for me, easy disabled foe.
I'm very interested, I'm a brown belt in Karate,( Normal).
Good job!

base of shotokan is traditional shorin ryu
Yep
Compare to Wado, we call it Pinan Nidan but still practice it as first Karate Kata. Lol
Wado comparison will be interesting too! I agree
This is sports karate kuokushin is fighting karate
Anyone familiar with Shidōkan style?
Who is Shoto, and who's Shito?

Weird, Shoto is leg block, shito is more offence style, I was taught shito block, more arm pit hit block. Always 2 for one .
