Most of the songs on the list I wouldn't have put in this video bit hey it's your opinion like car radio isn't my favourite but I still appreciate that it helped people and no matter what u aldaid there was gonna be bad comments
in heavydirtysoul the “joke” is that the zombies (undead, died then lived again) were saying you only live once.. even though they technically lived twice. yknow
I used to dismiss doubt but tbh, I love it now ?? I can't be bothered to explain, but things like "don't forget about me" is how I don't even want my demons to forget about me; otherwise what would I be? I know to some that sounds so messed up but eh
The bridge is one of my favourites on the record; "Gnawing on the bishops, Claw my way up their system. Repeating simple phrases, Someone holy insisted. Want the markings made on my skin To mean something to me again Hope you haven't left without me. Hope you haven't left without me, Please."
In “doubt” he doesn’t mean his actual “ceiling”. I think he’s talking about his “skill ceiling” how high he can go and how high before before he becomes irrelevant.
The only reason I disagree with you picking doubt is because it completely ties in with their new album "trench". The song can be traced back to Clancy's story and running away from Dema. The one part of the song that really exemplifies this is verse three "Gnawing on the bishops Claw away at the system Repeating simple phrases Someone holy insisted Want the mark he's made on my skin To mean something to me again Hope you haven't left without me Hope you haven't left without me, please" So I think even though it seems uninspired, it was meant for something bigger and eluding at the time to the bigger story which of course is "trench".
This is a really long comment, but I think it is interesting. I'm binge watching you channel right now, particularly TØP videos since Trench was released a few days ago. I think you are an awesome person and I really like how you are careful not to say something too upsetting, especially since your target audience seems to mostly consist of fangirls. ( Myself included. )I respect your opinion, especially since you have a good amount of evidence to support your thoughts. However, I disagree with some things you mentioned. -In Message Man, "These lyrics aren't for everyone, only few understand" means that only some people can truly relate, or understand what Tyler was going through. They can understand the lyrics because they have lived them. Bear with me here. You're only reading this, so you can't tell which syllables the emphasis is on, so stick with me. Anyone can understand lyrics, but not everyone can UNDERSTAND lyrics. Anyone can decipher what they mean, but only few can relate on a personal level. As for the comments, I think Tyler is trying to say that life is here, but you are too busy with the internet. "Life is up here, but you comment below. The comments will always become common motivation to promote your show's next episode." This means other people dictate what you will or won't do based on their opinions, beliefs, etc. -Polarize is repetitive. However, 'polarize' means "to restrict the vibrations of (a transverse wave, especially light) wholly or partially to one direction." Maybe Tyler needs to make a really tough decision and he doesn't know what to do, so he's asking for help. -I believe March to the Sea to be about the millions of suicidal people. They accept their fate. They have gone into such a dark place that death is the only way they see themselves escaping. Tyler following the spaceship is him breaking away from that mindset. When he wakes up, he realizes that there is another way out. However, there are some things in this song that don't make sense. -Doubt REALLY seems to be about dema and the lore that came with Trench. The drama is what makes the song good. (In my opinion) I have struggled with my self image and self esteem. I doubt everything. My image, my immaturity, etc. The ceiling may be like Tyler is trapped with his thoughts. He lays awake at night, looking at his ceiling, and thinks about the things he hates about himself. 'Don't know what's inside of me.' This ties in with another song, and I am too tired to find it. But he talks about the fear that he may hurt someone, or something along those lines. I know I skipped a few songs, and it is because I either didn't know the song well enough to have an opinion about it or I agreed with what was said. Also, why do you need to be 'warmed up'? Some songs are intense, and you can't sugarcoat things like anxiety and depression. There is no reason you should be eased into a song about such a sensitive topic. And if you ABSOLUTELY need to be warmed up, then that would take up 50% of the song. Then you only have 50% to get across a deep and meaningful message, which frankly doesn't''t make a lot of sense. Rant over. If you read this far, thanks, it really does mean a lot. (That's for anybody)
Emily Eager your grammar is better than most Americans (I’m not American but I lived there most of my childhood) and you literally put my thoughts into words. It’s also very comforting to see someone else can relate on such a personal level to his lyrics since all the TØP fans I personally know listen to their songs only because they’re really good so thank you😊 ||-//
GottaKeepItReal I'm just saying that he has grown a lot as an artist. His writing has gotten sooooo much better and I think that's what you want in an artist. :)
Clifford, my man, you know I respect you. And Iknow you respect an opinion. So here we go. In defense of Message Man: "Please use discretion when you're messing with the message man, These lyrics aren't for everyone, only few understand." I feel as though this brilliantly places the complexity of the meaning of Kitchen Sink into an easily digestable chorus. It is a reflecion of all of Blurryface- TOP for the masses, deeper music reaching out into popular music. Use discretion- some people think his songs are depressing. If you're not careful and you misunderstand, you won't be able to realize how uplifting they are. Good lyrics imo. "Gangsters don't cry, therefore I'm mister misty-eyed" is in reference to the beginning of the song when he states "this is not rap, this is not hip-hop". Even though the song sound kind of like trap-rap, he is reminding us that he is an emotional artist, not a rapper/gangster. *End Scene*
let me explain these songs for you. 1. Clear, this was the early years for Tyler, his depression was severe at this point of his life, so he wrote songs and released them to see if people could relate, if you are gonna sass him because of his thoughts of killing himself, which its not his fault, leave. 2. Be Concerned. Nobody lets him speak for himself and he doesn't like that. sometimes Tyler tries and he can't, don't judge him for what he can and can't do, the poor guy has anxiety and is fighting to live. he struggles with his doubt and that is what he describes. 3. Message Man. Tyler says he's wanted and on the run because Blurryface (his insecurities) wants to take him over and he's trying to run from himself. "these lyrics aren't for everyone only few understand" only few people understand what Tyler feels emotionally. "life is up here but you comment below", he means that life is hard sometimes, and hes saying not to pay attention to what people say about us on social media. 4. Polarize (My favorite song, I really don't like you now) The song is repetitive so Tyler can get his words out there. He wants to be happy, and he's asking us for help. It's a simple question, that you didn't understand. 5. Heavydirtysoul, AGAIN you don't understand what Tyler has been through. 6. March to the Sea, OVERLY DRAMATIC??! are you fricking kidding me? Tyler sings about what he dreams/thinks, he paints a beautiful picture of what his mind projects all of the time. 7. Before you start your day, He sees his fans as better people than he is. Which i think he shouldn't . 8. Johnny Boy. Tyler is relying on somebody to make the world better. ( I think) 9. Doubt. (you just hurt my heart) un-inspired? HELL NO, Tyler AND JOSH, took their time on this song. Josh also does the backing vocals. technically this song was for Josh, saying he is best friends with his doubt. "Don't for get about me" Josh is in the back and he thinks ppl forget about him, again this is Josh's song. He believes these things, Josh gets panic attacks, hes not actually scared of his own ceiling, he just feels like he's getting caved in. He isn't jumping into it, the whole song is about the same topic. FIGHT ME BRO ||-//
It's Sarah Wow! It’s almost like people can have different opinions and it’s ok!!! I am a big fan of Twenty One pilots but really don’t like the clique because of this problem. Songs are subjective. Just because someone doesn’t enjoy every TOP song doesn’t mean that they don’t understand the lyrics or don’t understand good music. Please calm down
I respect your opinions, but boi, message man and March to the sea are some of my favorite songs. Bit other than those, I completely understand and agree your list.
L❤️VE March to the sea also. Like they say lyrics mean something different to everyone 😀 BUT constructive criticism is sometimes a good thing. (And still ALL of THEIR SONGS ARE GOLDEN, Every. Single. One. I can tell that was a hard list to come up with lol
2:25 - 7 Message Man 3:00 - 6 Polarize 3:29 - 5 Heavydirtysoul 4:08 - 4 March To The Sea 5:25 - 3 Before You Start Your Day 6:16 - 2 Johnny Boy 6:58 - 1 Doubt
Doubt is my favorite song :( it’s about anxiety, and it’s very accurate. It sounds like a panic attack. When you have panic attacks sometimes you literally think you’re going to die, so talking about death in the song makes sense 😔
March to the sea is about following a crowd and basically like jumping off the cliff with them. The space ship is the new, alien "leader" that he starts to follow and yet again follows the crowd
GottaKeepItReal excuse me if you can't take a joke XD Don't call people kids just because they act like one, I'm an ENFP, so that's why I act this way 😂
I think the lyrics behind Johnny boy were written in the same sense as Tyler wrote Ruby. Johnny might be an actual person Tyler knows and the song is a poem of metaphors and parallels to Johnny’s life. Like how Ruby is about a little girl Tyler knew who was diagnosed with cancer. Both songs were not written for us to understand, but as a self-indulgent way for Tyler to talk about someone important to him going through a rough time.
yes i agree completely, along with seconding the comment by Steph. It's like Kitchen Sink, where we will never know what he's talking about because he wants to keep it for himself. Some things are for us to understand, but Tyler is more sentimental than we think and also has some songs that we aren't meant to rip apart like that.
As a TOP fan, I felt triggered when I saw the thumbnail - but in the end, you made very good points (especially with "Doubt"). HOWEVER, I do want to defend "Before You Start Your Day" by providing my interpretation of the "la da, la da," bit of the song. I believe there is actually a meaning behind the phrase, not just lyrical filler to set the atmosphere. The first line of the chorus is slightly changed each time, and "la da" is sung differently each time. This led me to believe that "la da" was representative of hope and each person's mental perspective. "I'm in your mind, I'm singing" - "La da" is sung normally. Obviously, Tyler is a voice of hope to this person. "You're in my mind, I'm singing" - "La da" is sung more loudly, emphasizing the emotion behind Tyler's perspective. Whoever the subject is (the fans, a specific person, etc), obviously gives Tyler a great amount of hope or determination while he battles his own demons. "And in your mind, you're singing" - "La da" is sung quieter, almost broken. If this person was battleing depression or suicide (arguably established by the "slits" analogy earlier in the song), finding hope would start off small - Tyler's music might be affecting their perspective and a change is beginning. Just wanted to share my theory behind the song. Overall, I actually enjoyed the video and agreed with many of your critiques. I've watched a few videos from your channel so far and you always provide an interesting perspective. Keep up the great work! :)
GENTLE ROAST ALERT 1. La da di da da is from Ruby, not Before You Start Your Day. It's La da, la da, la da, la da da 2. Lots of the songs you put on here (Mostly from Blurryface) I find have amazing music. Again, I'm a music nerd. I'm pretty sure you don't want a list of all the best Twenty One Pilots songs musically. 3. I really love the story behind March to the Sea, and sometimes, there really is no good place to start a story. Though I do agree with you on the line "Then the wages of war will start" 4. Yes, Doubt makes no sense. But, I believe Tyler had the music before the lyrics, because I really like the music for that song.
Message Man - amazing Polarize - amazing Heavydirtysoul - amazing March to the Sea - amazing Before You Start Your Day - amazing Johnny Boy - amazing Doubt - amazing Sorry, just had to throw my opinion on the 7 he listed out
Had a heart attack when I saw Trapdoor in the initial list tbh... It has some of my favourite lyrics, like "Nothing kills a man faster than his own head". It's also grappling with Kitchen Sink for the spot of my favourite Twenty One Pilots song.. But I also had a heart attack when I saw Slowtown there too. The song makes me feel something more than a lot of the other songs.
The only ones I disagreed with were March to The Sea and Johnny Boy. I personally identify with them in my own way. 1. I find March to The Sea to be a perfect metaphor for us all being tools in society, doing whatever is expected of us, "falling in line". 2. For some reason I've always believed Johnny Boy is about a seemingly mediocre man who's living a boring life, when really he's capable of great things. Almost as if he's meant to be a hero of some sort. I imagine Tyler/the narrator as being the only person who recognizes his potential.
I always thought that Johnny boy is about this one guy in a friend group who always doubts himself and feels like a burden to his friends. I think thats the case because of the line "we all need you now" like Tyler is trying to show Johnny that he is not a burden but pride and joy to his friends.
Honestly, only because YOU can't understand the lyrics, it doesn't mean that the songs are bad. Those songs helped a lot of people (including myself). The lyrics are much more then just simple words, they have a huge meaning, that "only few understand".
Lívia Søuza he's just giving his opinion. It's not a scientifically proven list that's been made the official order. They've helped me, but he has a right to say his opinion
I feel personally attacked by having Doubt on the list (since y'all can't read sarcasm, I don't actually feel attacked). But, Doubt is my favorite song of theirs because I can 100% relate with the entire song.
NOBODY DARE TO TOUCH "BEFORE YOU START YOUR DAY"!!!! DON'T! DO NOT! THIS IS SONG IS MINE! THIS SONG IS B E A U T I F U L!!! PS. no hate i like your videos so much. i'm just so IN LOVE with this song.
I completely agree, However I feel like Before You Start Your Day is less of a song rather than an outro to the album, like Goner was to Blurryface. Don't get me wrong, they're both some of my favourites on each album, but I think what Tyler might have been going for was a kind of "ending" to the story, and that story was the respective albums, so I can still appreciate what each song is trying to represent. Maybe that's why I hold them in such high regard.
Vanessa Spiker it’s true, every song sounds the same with him. Closed hi-hats the whole damn song and near the end they open. He never tries anything new and he brings the word “overrated” to a whole new level
I love twenty one pilots. I love Doubt. But I get your critics. In some cases I agree with them, in other cases I don't. (I dislike Clear, to be honest) Criticising is important, especially with a band like twenty one pilots that has a lot of overobsessive fans who actually think that everything Tyler and Josh do is perfect.
I respect your opinion and even see where you’re coming from on Heavydirtysoul, despite that being my favorite song by them, but some of the criticisms in this video just seem a bit petty, especially with March to the Sea I agree that we can’t hold the band to an impossible standard but at the same time nitpicks like “the wages of war” vs “waging war” just seem like a stretch to me
tyler uses a lot of puns/double meanings of words/phrases in his songs. he could easily be making a play on words of waging war/and wages of war. Wages can mean the price or a payment, so maybe he's refering to the price of war not just the fact that a war is happening
I felt personally attacked that on your original list of non-super songs there was friend please, oh ms believer, before you start your day, trapdoor, isle of flightless birds, fake you out, house of gold, truce, the run and go, doubt, hometown, slowtown, lovely, be concerned, clear and polarize. Most of the songs i dislike are off blurryface. Also if you can't tell, I very much disagree with that first list
ThatOneEmo I disagree with your list because I don't think for example that isle of flightless birds is poor lyrically, I don't think slowtown doesn't make sense or anything (I don't assume you meant that), Trapdoor is actually one of my favorites cause I do think the lyrics are well written .. anyway, nothing agressive, just my point of view, have a nice day
same Trapdoor is also like my 2nd or 3rd fave song.. and also most of the songs i dislike are more off blurryface, and i think all the songs from self titled, regional at best and vessel are all flawless
Hortense Mailhos If I understood you correctly, I think you thought my list was negative. It's actually just the songs that in my opinion shouldn't have been on his list of imperfect songs
ThatOneEmo oh yeah sorry I misunderstood your list I'm very sorry but anyway there it is (for other people maybe so my comment won't be totally useless)
At first I was hurt by this title but then you explained and you're right. But I love "these lyrics aren't for everyone only few understand" my grandmother and other people I've met don't like their songs and don't get what their talking about and don't care to. It's because they don't understand WHAT IT FEELS LIKE to live this way constantly, and they don't care to understand because it's a really dark world. Sometimes even if they try to understand, they can't because it's a whole different world. I try to talk to people about what I wonder and think about every night and every day and they say they just don't think like that so they don't understand how it feels to think that way or what I'm talking about. So I don't agree on that one. But it's my opinion
ok. you may be depressed, you may be having hard times, you may be even having suicidal thoughts. but don't ignore your relatives as being unable to understand you. they have had hard times too. they just, don't like the music because it's not from their generation, or they aren't into more alternative, complex music. p.s. stay alive fren
Polarize? That’s a great song, heavydirtysoul? And message man?! Doubt?!! They are all great songs!! (And I did see tear in my heart in your first list)
As A TØP Fan-man, I love this list. I can just point the haters to this list. That way they can understand that even the "worst" songs still are pretty good.
For March to the Sea, the metaphor of “length is time” is used to suggest that you have a long time to reach any end, hence the lyrics, “there’s miles of land in front of us”. Then for “we’re dying with every step/breath we take/make” can be interpreted by saying that every day is just one day closer to death. That lyric can also be interpreted as the writer (Tyler’s) personal life by showing how he gets more and more tired with every passing day, almost as if he were a soldier... “dying with every step he takes”, in addition to the war inside his head (if that makes more sense with the war perspective). When Tyler says “Follow me instead”, it comes from Matthew 4:19 in which states “‘Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people”’. This suggests the voice that refers to his urge to be different, even if he won’t be accepted. Tyler won’t conform to the motifs of the world, but will look upon Gods plan. As for the lyrics “the wages of war will start inside my head with the counterpart”, Tyler starts to have a spiritual battle, he knew he was in line to die, and God tells him to follow him. His demons don’t want God to take him away from them. I hope that can help :))))
@@BuriedDimension i dont exactly give a shit, if youre going to complain do it somewhere else. I dont even like TOP anymore because of how toxic there fanbase can be and metal is better for me now
I love Johnny boy and songs in general that don't really have a meaning that needs to be explained cause you make that meaning for yourself and it becomes something personal to you.
Johnny boy is one of my favs so im gonna try to explain it. Its about a person named Johnny who has depression and he is in love with his wife and he thinks its enough to make him happy but its not seen by him skipping work, and the small jesters of people saying 'good-bye' and nice things makes him still want to keep living, and tyler singing 'get up johnny boy' is like god saying keep on going and you got this. and the part saying 'we all need you know' means that all him friends will feel sad and him being there makes them happy.
Holy guacamole did I feel very strongly about this. Point one message man: it is not talking literally about understanding his lyrics it is talking about the people who suffer with these thoughts. It is mental illness related. Point two heavydirtysoul: it is not supposed to mean actual gangsters crying, it is talking about how he holds it in and doesn’t cry because all of society is telling him he can’t. Point three start your day: the glitter is supposed to be a mask you hide behind, then when he is in your mind he is trying to calm the listener and stop the harmful thoughts. Point four doubt: he is doubting his existence, these are suicidal thoughts. And everything in the verses are real thoughts people with anxiety and depression have. I HATE to be THAT person but to me this sounds like a neurotypical trying to talk about mental illness. I am glad you can be objective but I think some of your points were not valid from the point of mental illnesses. So sorry, I hate being critical but those are my thought. Thanks.
I'm just sad that you even considered Truce to be put in the list. You should see the comment section it can be so touching. Other wise I entirely agree with your list except for the songs on blurryface that they sound good :P
Yeah exactly! People say least favorite meaning they don't like it, but for me it just means there may be things I think are better. If it was something I didn't like I would probably say that I just don't particularly like it.

it's an amazing line, and i wish that he had squeezed it into a song of the same principles! i feel that in a way, it has been used in the wrong track
I want the marking on my skin, to mean something to me again.

In “doubt” he doesn’t mean his actual “ceiling”. I think he’s talking about his “skill ceiling” how high he can go and how high before before he becomes irrelevant.
He also criticized the fact that doubt doesn't have any meaning behind although the song is about a fear of being forgotten
To me... I think scared of his ceiling means. Fear about the suicidal thoughts. Because you know its the ceilings...

The only reason I disagree with you picking doubt is because it completely ties in with their new album "trench". The song can be traced back to Clancy's story and running away from Dema. The one part of the song that really exemplifies this is verse three "Gnawing on the bishops
Claw away at the system
Repeating simple phrases
Someone holy insisted
Want the mark he's made on my skin
To mean something to me again
Hope you haven't left without me
Hope you haven't left without me, please"
So I think even though it seems uninspired, it was meant for something bigger and eluding at the time to the bigger story which of course is "trench".
brennan inc. this video was uploaded in March, deep into the hiatus. There were barely any if not then no teasers for their next album.
yeah thats why im not giving him shit for it

BTW I'm in Germany so my grammar may not be the best
Follow me instead.... He's being show another path. And he sings that line so powerfully in the last chorus.

Very true.

It was definitely hard.
How about "Twenty Øne Piløts is not the worst band."?
AlvaBro well that's an obvious thing
Charlie M good for you
But you just made a sentence with both of those words
let me explain these songs for you.
( I think)

Both songs were not written for us to understand, but as a self-indulgent way for Tyler to talk about someone important to him going through a rough time.
iced coffee Ruby was about his neighbor with Down Syndrome, not cancer but I agree with everything else.
yes i agree completely, along with seconding the comment by Steph. It's like Kitchen Sink, where we will never know what he's talking about because he wants to keep it for himself. Some things are for us to understand, but Tyler is more sentimental than we think and also has some songs that we aren't meant to rip apart like that.
Steph Cruz oh my bad, thanks for correcting me.

Wow I really like that
thats awesome...holy shit...my view has changed and i love the song even more
GENTLE ROAST ALERT
1. La da di da da is from Ruby, not Before You Start Your Day. It's La da, la da, la da, la da da
Though I do agree with you on the line "Then the wages of war will start"
4. Yes, Doubt makes no sense. But, I believe Tyler had the music before the lyrics, because I really like the music for that song.
He could be talking about both, I mean, it's his video.
Also, I liked Doubt. It's lyrically simple, but I love it for how atmospheric it is...

Sorry, just had to throw my opinion on the 7 he listed out
Had a heart attack when I saw Trapdoor in the initial list tbh...
I feel personally attacked... But thanks for getting me through the hiatus

Jamil Hneini 😂😂😭😭 yup
twentyonefans 218 yep sad times been watching a lot of conspiracy videos on tøp recently so hope it ends soon
I agree completely. Those are the exact 2 songs I thought shouldn’t have been on the list.
He didn't touch Goner. Im taking the win.
Goner is awesome!
I was so close. For some reason I like doubt a lot
It's cuz Goner earned its emotionality by being the closer lol
Honestly, only because YOU can't understand the lyrics, it doesn't mean that the songs are bad. Those songs helped a lot of people (including myself). The lyrics are much more then just simple words, they have a huge meaning, that "only few understand".
he is just saying his opinion, calm down.
Lívia Søuza he's just giving his opinion. It's not a scientifically proven list that's been made the official order. They've helped me, but he has a right to say his opinion

I respect your opinion and even see where you’re coming from on Heavydirtysoul, despite that being my favorite song by them, but some of the criticisms in this video just seem a bit petty, especially with March to the Sea
I agree that we can’t hold the band to an impossible standard but at the same time nitpicks like “the wages of war” vs “waging war” just seem like a stretch to me
agreed but he had to nitpick at the songs to make this video cause all tøp songs are good
tyler uses a lot of puns/double meanings of words/phrases in his songs. he could easily be making a play on words of waging war/and wages of war. Wages can mean the price or a payment, so maybe he's refering to the price of war not just the fact that a war is happening
Amen
@rachel exactly like the consequences of war
He kind of had to make some forced criticism bc tøp don't have worse songs I guess😂

ThatOneEmo I disagree with your list because I don't think for example that isle of flightless birds is poor lyrically, I don't think slowtown doesn't make sense or anything (I don't assume you meant that), Trapdoor is actually one of my favorites cause I do think the lyrics are well written .. anyway, nothing agressive, just my point of view, have a nice day
ThatOneEmo can you be any truer? I freaking agree
same Trapdoor is also like my 2nd or 3rd fave song.. and also most of the songs i dislike are more off blurryface, and i think all the songs from self titled, regional at best and vessel are all flawless

*BUT THE WAY YOU MADE FUN OF IT WAS HILARIOUS NOW MAKE FUN OF TACO BELL SAGA*
I admire ur bravery to share unpopular yet objective opinions on top's songs. Though i disagree with quite a few of ur choices, i do see your point.
Thanks.
"I listed all the twenty one pilots songs that didn't seem super"
*Lists almost every single top song that I love*
I'm just sad that you even considered Truce to be put in the list. You should see the comment section it can be so touching.
Other wise I entirely agree with your list except for the songs on blurryface that they sound good :P
Excuse me.. *could you please leave*
////milky.peachJenu //// YES YES YES. That interview was so good
I heard polarize! Then I read the title, FITE MEH!
////milky.peachJenu //// HAHAHA YES OMFGG
so threatening
Just bc he says it's the worst doesn't mean he doesn't like them just means they could be better
Exactly! Blurryface is my least favorite TOP album _compared to the others_ but it's still in my top 40 albums of all time.
Yeah exactly! People say least favorite meaning they don't like it, but for me it just means there may be things I think are better. If it was something I didn't like I would probably say that I just don't particularly like it.
I agree. Even though I love all these songs, I can still see some of their faults. (Except BYSYD, which he was way too harsh on.)
Oh boy wait till he hears the new album
