This generation of 'remasters' is never anything more than just a resolution upgrade with imperceptible tweaks to the renderer. No-one ever goes in in and actually re-writes the engine enough to squeeze better graphics or even frame rates.
To be fair Mafia Definitive Edition is likely the best 'Remake' of this year most notably in the actual visiually department in comparison to it's original counterpart.
The original was such high quality that you have to stop and stare at most things to notice the remaster. But I do love the actual sand looking beach. Don't have 4-8k stuff to fully appreciate.
We're watching through TH-cam filtering. Also, standards have gone up since then; it used to be 1080p 60 was the highest setting, but nowadays 1440p 144 is the standard for high-end PCs, and 4k isn't uncommon.

Crysis 1 is the best first-person shooter ever made. Especially having been made in a time where every FPS was a very linear experience, Crysis 1 was ahead of its time in having large maps that contained several objectives which could be approached in a variety of different ways. There are so many cool things you can do, like attaching explosives to cars and then driving them into enemy positions, then bailing out and detonating them as the car sails into the enemy. Unfortunately, the game falls flat on its face in the home stretch, as the awakening of the alien squid things necessitates a frantic - but entirely linear - evacuation of the island. The multiplayer was also fantastic and ahead of its time. Enormous maps which contained objectives which, when captured, actually had functional utility - you could only build the more powerful vehicles, like tanks, at captured factories, using points you had earned that round as currency to build a variety of vehicles and other equipment. Then Crysis 2 came along and decided it wanted to be COD.
Crysis 2 had some graphics enhancements, but was far inferior to the first Crysis. It was just a shooter on rails, which killed the whole immersion of the first game. Oh, by the way, the first Far Cry game felt very open too, and was definitely way ahead of other shooters of it's time. I hope one they it will get remastered too. Imagine the original Far Cry, but with Crysis graphics. That would be awesome.
Watching this made me look up this Menander fellow he kept mentioning. I have to say he's pretty hilarious, good choice of complete-works-worth-saving.
and everything feels hollow. I played the original pc version like 6 months ago and the game didn't feel lived in at all. really is just a big shooting gallery with mostly brain dead A.I. the 2nd and 3rd game are great tho.
They basically just cranked things like view distance (or how far away details like trees are rendered) to 11. Add some raytracing (which actually looks good) and voila. But yeah, for the performance requirements (even the new 3080/90 cards can't really run it well at 4k. Even at 1080 this looked sluggish with, I think, a 2080ti if I remember correctly what Jon uses) it looks quite bad
Every time I see footage of the remastered I am trying to find things which genuinely look better than the original but I can't. It looks almost identical because all the models and textures still seem to be the same from 2007.
I think they really messed up with color saturation. The original had realistic colors, this has everything cranked up to cartoon neon levels which doesn't help with realism.
I wish they'd just do a fourth game or reboot the series, it's so damn cool feeling like a powerful badass but the plot in these games isn't the best and honestly I think the least exciting thing about it is the alien stuff. They're never fun to fight or interesting in the slightest, wish they'd do something to make them so. The Ceph should feel way harder to deal with than anything else but they're just slightly tankier soldiers really. The nanosuit is where it's at though, Crysis is the best Predator game to ever be made. If they rebooted it with more interactive environments it'd be awesome and additionally less focus on maximum graphics more on fun. Imagine you could use the strength mode to punch or pull out the support beams on the side of a building and make it collapse on enemies? Awesome.
It's a crying shame they changed the way the powers work. They were amazing how fluid they were in the original, but this feels clunky and like the suit powers aren't as unique or interesting, much like Crysis 2. Ah well. At least the original still exists and is still playable.
IIRC, "armor mode" was just "the default condition when you weren't in strength, speed, or stealth mode" in the original Crysis 1, and didn't drain any suit energy. Which, while great for the player, was maybe not so great conceptually.

But it wasn't nearly as strong as armor mode in this version, so you were still quite vulnerable, and had to utilize your other abilities significantly more in order to be more effective. Though I'm not super positive, since it's been a fair few years since I've played it.

Also, guess I’ll watch this. Just an FYI, when you were walking on the beach in the beginning in stealth mode, they saw your footprints on the sand. They guy actually follows them with his flashlight right to you.
The thing i really dont like is they change the default suit mode to strength instead armor, and armor deplete your energy eventhough theres nothing hit you. I always like the suit work in the original crysis. never like the rest like 2 or 3
Never played the 3rd one, but I liked the stealth mode in the second game. Instead of automatically depleting all the energy after firing any gun, it was using up some of the energy, depending on the suppressor installed or not, and the size of the gun. So with smaller, silenced weapons, you could fire off several shots before decloaking. Unfortunately, that's about the only thing I liked in the second game. It just wasn't any fun to play, like the first one.
This version actually uses baked in Ray Tracing like Cryteks own Neon Noir RT demo. Except it doesn't require any RT cores to run it efficiently. CRYSIS has Global Illumination with somewhat better and worse looking shadows. The lighting looks much better, along with the water and basic graphics textures. That's basically the only differences in graphics.

I think you will find that was a wader not a duck, and they don’t swim, that’s why they have those long legs so they can get food as the tide comes in and out. So in actual fact Crysis did that correctly
this doesn't look that much better than the original. though they seem to have added that opening, I believe the last one started you off in the air like at around 1:20. the only thing that is improved is the flashlight, it looks very good.

Also, Strength Mode and scoping-in "solidifies" you and removes gun-sway. So, from Cloak: line up shot, Strength, Fire, Cloak, Prophet!

For such 'pc crippling graphics" the roads, buildings, rocks and trees look pretty flat and everything seems to blend together and washed out.

Looking bad and being technically demanding are not mutually exclusive. Even the blandest scenes can take half an hour to render with a pathtracer.

The original Crysis came out 13 years ago. There's an entire new generation of gamers that never played it who this remaster can introduce it to.
